PUBLISHER Hello Friends! One of the things March is known for is Spiritual Wellness Month. I know it is mostly recognized as religion and I completely believe in God as our creator. I do think there are other ways to think about our spiritual health. Are you taking care of yourself in that way? I am not in any way saying I am doing all that I should do. 11 kids, many farm animals and multiple kids certainly makes “me time” almost impossible. I am going to make an effort to find a few moments a day of time for my spiritually and I suggest we all do the same. I am not sure who said it first but we certainly can’t pour from an empty cup. Is your cup empty? Have a great week friends and find some “me time.”

Ron Short Named Tennessee Songwriters Week Finalist at Down Home in JC The fifth of seven Tennessee Songwriters Week finalists wowed the crowd on stage at The Down Home in Johnson City last night, The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development announced today. Ron Short competed against 17 other songwriters to win the showcase with his song “France”. Six other showcase events are scheduled this week, including at Lafayette’s Music Room in Memphis, Songbirds Foundation in Chattanooga, Ole Red in Gatlinburg, The Bijou Theatre in Knoxville, The Franklin Theatre in Franklin and The Palace Theatre in Gallatin. Each of the seven finalists across the state earn the opportunity to perform at The Bluebird Cafe during a private event in March with music industry professionals, a branded commemorative Taylor guitar, two-night stay in Nashville, $100 gift card for travel and one-year membership to Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI). Songwriters performed at qualifying rounds in February at more than 50 venues, museums, attractions and cafes to advance to the showcase events. The event was emceed by Ed Snodderly. Snodderly is co-owner of The Down Home, which has been bringing live
music to the people of Johnson City since 1976. He is an accomplished songwriter, musician, and supporter of live music. Judges included radio personality and host of “Women On Air” Susan Lachman, university instructor Brandon Story, and songwriter/musician Seth Thomas. Judges considered lyric originality, performance and connection with the audience. Short is a singer, musician, songwriter, playwright, and actor, who has carried on his family’s singing tradition that dates back to the 1800s. He joined Roadside Theater in 1979, has had 12 major recordings of his music, and has served as the producer of four collections of Appalachian music for PBS. “Thanks to Ed and thanks to Tennessee Songwriters Week, you’re never too old to follow your dreams,” said Short. Previous Johnson City finalists Seth Thomas and Chancellor Lawson performed as special guests. With a wide variety of genres present in Northeast Tennessee including country, rock, jazz, metal and more, music and songwriting run deep into the roots of the region. As Bristol, TN holds the title of “The Birthplace of Country Music” the
region has a long history within the genre and was the setting for some of the earliest country records including those of the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. Helmed by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, Tennessee Songwriters Week was established in 2019 to support music venues, celebrate songwriters with live performances in all genres of music, drive visitation and inspire travelers to experience the state’s music stories, history, attractions and venues. Since its inception, more than 3,500 songwriters have shared their original
music across Tennessee stages during the annual celebration. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development partners with The Bluebird Cafe, NSAI, Taylor Guitars, music venues and local convention and visitors’ bureaus, chambers and partners across the state, all committed to make sure songwriters can share their original work onstage with other writers. Follow the journey of these songwriters and join the fun by following @tnvacation on social media and #tnsongwritersweek.

I did not write this one. I asked Mistress Marilyn to write it. Hope all of you enjoy this true story. The Right Man for the Job: Doug Krockow Have you ever experienced a dependable and knowledgeable technician/ mechanic who is so trusted that you would follow him to the ends of the earth, just to keep him? I have, and just the thought of him disappearing into the night will cause panic attacks in me. I ride

motorcycles. I own 2. One is considered a “classic” as it is now 30 years old. The other is a newer bike... 2018. Both are Harley-Davidson. Both are my mechanical babies. My children, so to speak. My tech is Doug Krockow. Doug started his journey into the realm of motorcycle maintenance in 1993. His basic studies began at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute Phoenix. He procured his certificate in Basic Motorcycle Maintenance Program Harley-Davidson Technician Program HarleyDavidson Late Model Program Harley-Davidson Early Model Program. Doug was employed through various HD dealerships, attending new certification classes which include technician, expert technician, motor chassis, master electrical, and Master of service technologies. Doug knows Harley Davidson motorcycles. And continues to learn more of his craft by volunteering his weekends to assist Matt Walksler at the world-famous Wheels Through Time. Doug’s expertise is constantly expanding. He can be counted on to work on any model year throughout the history of the Harley Davidson line up. At present you can find Doug at Biker Wear, 116 Buffalo Street in Johnson City, TN. Doug’s expertise is a huge asset to our area. Doug does not carry the prima Donna complex. He loves his work and is not afraid of the mundane or the nasty jobs that most Prima Donna’s will not work on. I grew up in an era when the technician's work areas were in a generalized state of disarray. Their tools rarely saw a good wipe down after a greasy or oily job. Most tools were thrown haphazardly into the toolbox and the tech simply knew the general location of all his tools. This ain’t how Doug
rolls, he understands the value of a well-organized and clean shop. Ya gotta love a man who has old school knowledge served up with today’s values of organization and cleanliness. Another interesting fact about Doug: he has another workspace off the premises of Biker Wear. It is packed full of bikes he is building for himself. He has built two bikes for his wife Kim, one is a beautiful custom build that made me want it for myself, and the other is a go-fast HD, built to impress! He is in the process of building an old Iron Head Sportster chopper for resale, as he wants to gain a base of money to rebuild the Panhead engine he inherited from his father. His idea is to build a
custom Panhead chopper for himself, memorializing his father. Oh, did I say Doug is a 2nd generation biker? Yeah, he comes by his talent through his father’s tutelage. I’d like to sum up this article by telling y’all this: good motorcycle mechanics are not a dime a dozen. The good ones are the guys and gals with imagination and true love of their craft. Doug has the knowledge, the experience, and the true pride of workmanship to sell his efforts. I will follow this man to Alaska if he decides to pack up and ride there. He is my go-to for HD maintenance.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical on the idea of AsianMexican fusion by way of Johnson City Tennessee. While hearing this kooky concept was being spearheaded by the successful Stir Fry Group was a bit of a comfort, I had my initial reservations; especially when they began construction which involved obstructing the historic Coca-Cola mural that had been lovingly restored at the end of Tipton Street. While I was busy admiring the architecture, I can’t forget to mention the food. For starters we enjoyed the Thai Chicken Wings and Fresh Oysters. I’m not the greatest reference in terms of heat, as I only consider something hot if it results in tears the next day, but I don’t think these would be offensive to someone more sensitive to spicy food. The standard wine drinker would have no complaints, but of course I would enjoy seeing a few more interesting whites on the list. A budget friendly Vouvray, Picpoul de Pinet, or Albarino would be an excellent pairing for the cuisine here. I do think the focus of their menu is on their beautiful cocktails and that’s really where they shine, which is something I will never complain about. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Juan Siao and I’m actually excited to return. I’m sure their warm weather menu changes will aim to please, and it seems like the perfect place to beat the summer heat with spicy plates and icy glasses.

Your Place or Mine I have always loved Reese Witherspoon. My favorite film from the Nashville raised actress is "Legally Blonde", and to a lesser extent its sequel. Reese is back in the new film "Your Place or Mine" with costar Ashton Kutcher ("That 70's Show") now showing on Netflix. Reece stars as Debbie Dunn, who 20 years ago hooked up with Peter Coleman (Kutcher), and even though the two never went on to pursue a romantic relationship, have remained best friends since that one night together. Debbie currently lives in L.A. and is a single mom raising her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel) while trying to pursue a career that will help with finances even though she would rather be part of the book publishing world. Meanwhile, Peter is a highly successful consultant living in New York City. The two communicate daily much to the dismay of Peter's girlfriend Minka (Zoe Chao), who begins to wonder just how serious Peter is about their relationship. When Minka discovers Debbie is coming to New York to complete an

accountancy course to secure a pay raise, she decides to dump Peter after the news and his refusal to make a commitment to her. Meanwhile, back in L.A., Debbie is hit with the news her sitter for Jack has an unexpected job opportunity leaving her without a sitter. Upon hearing the news, Peter tells Debbe he would be happy to fly out to care for Jack while she takes her class in New York. Debbie, a very "smothering" parent, agrees to the arrangement and heads to New York after Peter arrives in L.A. Jack has always lived under the uber strict rules of his mom, and while he finds Jack strange at first, beings to love how his replacement sitter gives him the most freedom he has ever experienced. Jack, who has been rejected by two of his best friends, is receiving help from Peter to win them back. While she is in New York, Debbie begins her class and meets Minka who wants to see what Peters sees in his best friend. Minka actually takes Debbie under her wing, and one night while the two are out they see famous book publisher Theo Martin (Jesse Williams), strike up a conservation, and soon Theo and Debbie are crushing on each other. In a roundabout way, Peter discovers the budding romance between Theo and Debbie, and begins to realize he has feelings for Debbie and should have never let her go. As for Debbie, while she may be falling for Theo, she discovers something hidden in Peter's apartment that awakens feelings in her as well. From this point forward, one awaits
the eventual reunion between Peter and Debbie. The film has plenty of "cute" moments as one would expect from this type of film, and even provides some laughs. Reese is her usual peppy self, and this role is perfect for her. Kutcher is a fine co-star for bubbly Reese, and the two have great screen chemistry. The supporting cast is also great, with Chao perfectly cast as the ditzy "I don't read"
Minka. Steve Zahn is also on hand as Zen, Debbie's rich neighbor who is always tending to her garden while harboring a crush on his neighbor. All of the aforementioned results in an enjoyable romcom romp. If you enjoy this genre of film, and are a fan of Reese, "Your Place of Mine" is the film for you. Now playing on Netflix. (Rated PG-13)

It’s a piece of music that induces terror and dread far better than any other in my mind. It’s the music cue from the Sonic The Hedgehog game that plays during an underwater level when Sonic is about to run out of air and drown. Look the sound cue up online if you’ve never heard it, but it’s perfect for the passing moment of terror I felt. Then you relax and realized that you have survived every time you’ve had a full calendar and it hasn’t sent you into a state of madness— yet. It’s the yet that worries me.
