NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

Hello Friends!

Back to School time is here for most everyone! I think the college kids still have the month of August. That means it is still not too late to look at some of those schools. We are happy to have Tusculum College in The Loafer this week! If you are looking to stay close to home while getting a wonderful education, I would give them a look.

Are you dreading the shopping as much as I am??? At least we have the tax free weekend coming up. That will help some on the wallet. Do you enjoy walking those aisles at the store with your list from the teachers? Do you let the kids pick out their own supplies or do you sneak away on your own to make it quicker and easier?? I know there are some back to school events in the area so if you need some financial help on those supplies I would most certainly attend one of those events.

I hope all of you enjoy your last days

10 Tips For Back-to-School Success!

Almost all of us dread the end of summer. Kids are reluctant to get back into the routine of early mornings, structured days and the homework that school brings. And many parents are also reluctant to get back into the routine of early mornings, structured days and homework!

Whether your child is returning to pre-school, elementary school or middle school, here are 10 tips to help make the transition back to school a success.

1) Scale Back the Bedtime HourIt’s easy in the summer to let bedtime slide a little later. About 3 weeks before school begins start scaling back bedtime so that by the end of the third week your child is rising at the same time s/he will have to get up for school. (It takes about 3 weeks for the body to adapt to a new sleep schedule.) If you’ve been putting your child to bed at 9

p.m., the first week put him/her to bed about 15 minutes earlier at 8:45. The next week, make it 8:30 and then the next week 8:15. Also start waking your child up a little earlier each week so that one week before schools starts, you’re mimicking the school schedule.

2) Shop early for school supplies with your child. Your child will gain a sense of ownership by picking his/her own supplies.

3) Create a Homework BasketWhile you’re shopping for school supplies, have your child pick a homework basket. This basket should contain all of the supplies that will be necessary to complete homework i.e. lots of pencils and erasers, a ruler, scissors, paper, markers, etc. These supplies should be used exclusively for homework to prevent dawdling/excuses when it comes time to do homework

4) Find kid-friendly breakfast and lunch ideas. Shop for easy, nutritious foods that pack a lot of protein into your child’s

diet. Protein enhances neural connections in the brain.

5) Get Yourself OrganizedDevelop a filing system for all of the paperwork that comes home.

5) Review bus safety rules.

6) Shop for a first-day of school outfit. If you can afford it, let your child start school in a fun new outfit that will feel special.

7) Develop Morning StrategiesDo as much as you can the night before each school day. Check the weather forecast with your child and pre-select an outfit with your child that’s weather-appropriate. Make sure his/her homework/ supplies are in the back pack at night. Have lunches or snacks pre-packed. Have a picture chart with your child’s morning duties outlined and have your child check them off at they are completed. Time out how long the morning routine should take and add 10 minutes.

8) Meet the Teacher- If your school hosts a meet-the-teacher event or open house, be sure to go. Ask the teacher for an outline of the day’s activities so you can prepare your child. Also ask the teacher’s xpectations for homework. Take a picture of your child with his/her teacher and post it on the fridge.

Make sure your child knows his/ her way around the school. Set up a play date if your child knows even one other child in the class.

9) End-of Summer Ritual- It can be helpful to create a ritual with your kids that signals the end of summer. It might be creating a scrapbook of the summer’s events. It might be going to an amusement park for one last hurrah.

10) Duplicate School Rules- Once school has started, ask your child what the rules are in his/ her classroom? i.e. No Putdowns. Try to mimic the language that’s being used in the classroom at home to reinforce the lessons in both places.

By taking these steps, you’ll be preparing your child to start the school year prepared for success.

Bestselling Author Imani Perry to Headline ETSU Conference

Critically acclaimed author Dr. Imani Perry will serve as the keynote speaker for East Tennessee State University’s fifth annual Equity and Inclusion Conference. The conference, open to the public, will take place Sept. 28-30 and will be held entirely in-person for the first time since the pandemic.

Perry is renowned for her work that explores the intersections of history, race, law and culture. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in the aftermath of the horrific 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, Perry’s life and work have been deeply imbued with a commitment to justice and progressive change.

Perry’s academic and literary contributions, including her National Book Award-winning work “South to America: A Journey Below the MasonDixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation,” explores how the South shapes American history and culture. Her numerous accolades, including awards for her exploration of the life of underrecognized Black artist Lorraine Hansberry, firmly position her as a significant figure in contemporary literature and academia.

ETSU’s Equity and Inclusion Conference features keynote speakers and presenters

from across the country, focusing on topics such as Appalachian identity, culture, race, ethnicity and accessibility. This year’s conference theme is “Beyond ‘Checking a Box’: Building and Sustaining Campus-Wide Engagement for Belonging,” underscoring the institution’s

commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all people.

Perry, known for her insightful works like “Breathe: A Letter to My Sons” and “Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry,” was selected to inspire and provoke thoughtful discussion in line with this theme.

“If there were one impact I’d like my work to have, it would be that people would cease talking about African American history and culture in terms of deprivation or inadequacy and actually acknowledge its depth and complexity and beauty,” Perry said.

Registration for the conference is open; visit etsu.edu/equity/conference for details. For disability accommodations, contact the ETSU Office of Disability Services at (423) 439-8346.

Further details about additional speakers and a comprehensive schedule for the conference will be announced in the coming weeks.

ETSU Chief of Police Recognized Nationally

At a conference in Las Vegas this month, East Tennessee State University’s Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety

Cesar Gracia earned a special recognition as a finalist for Campus Safety Director of the Year, hosted by Campus Safety Magazine.

It’s a prestigious, national honor. But Gracia doesn’t want the credit. “Our officers work 12-hour shifts and not only respond to calls of service, but they also provide foot patrols and engage our campus community in an effort to maintain a safe living and learning environment,” he said. “Our dispatchers are also dedicated to our campus community by providing assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.”

Gracia arrived at ETSU in late 2020. Prior to that, he served for five years as dean of campus safety and chief of police at Lincoln Memorial University. He provided leadership, direction and management for the police and security department and its

programs, services and activities at LMU.

A graduate of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Training Academy, he holds a B.A. in criminal justice and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with a concentration in criminal justice, both from ETSU. His career also includes four years with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and seven years with the Kingsport Police Department.

“Our officers have really been dedicated to our community policing concepts; they are truly dedicated to assuring everyone’s safety while on campus. They provide battery boosts, assist with changing tires and assist when students, faculty and staff lock themselves out of their vehicles,” he said. “In an effort to build community trust, there are many duties that are not directly related to law enforcement that our officers willingly do so that the campus community feels safe and appreciated.”

Hello everyone, hope you had a fun and safe July 4th Holiday. July is the month in which we celebrate our country’s independence. Our founding fathers sealed the declaration on July 4th, 1776. Our country is 245 years old. Now let’s take a short trip through history.

On July 2, 1776, Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, the final wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved, and the document was published. the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. In 1870, Independence Day was made an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1941, it became a paid holiday for them. The first description of how Independence Day would be celebrated was in a letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776. He described "pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations" throughout the United States. However, the term "Independence Day" was not used until 1791. Interestingly, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both signers of the Declaration of Independence and presidents of the United States, died on July 4, 1826 - exactly 50 years after the adoption of the declaration. It is also important to note that Native Americans lived in the country and each tribe had its own nation and government prior to the European settlers. Independence Day is a federal holiday. If July 4 is a Saturday, it is observed on Friday, July 3. If July 4 is a Sunday, it is observed on Monday, July 5. Government offices and schools are closed. Some businesses may be closed as well. In some years, many employees use a proportion of their vacation days to create a long weekend. This can cause congestion in some places, particularly towards popular holiday destinations. There are many public events, parades, shows and fireworks displays. This may cause local disruption to traffic. Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom. Activities associated with the day include watermelon

or hotdog eating competitions and sporting events, such as baseball games, three-legged races, swimming activities and tug-of-war games. Many people display the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Many communities arrange fireworks that are often accompanied by patriotic music. The most impressive fireworks are shown on television. Some employees use one or more of their vacation days to create a long weekend so that they can escape the heat at their favorite beach or vacation

spot. Independence Day is a patriotic holiday for celebrating the positive aspects of the United States. Many politicians appear at public events to show their support for the history, heritage and people of their country. Above all, people in the United States express and give thanks for the freedom and liberties fought by the first generation of many of today's Americans. The Statue of Liberty is a national monument that is associated with Independence Day.

Back to School - For Parents Too!

Now that the summer is coming to an end, for those parents with children it is time to start thinking about the next school year! School supplies, uniforms, teachers, homework, tests, clubs, sports, birthday parties, play-dates, and so much more! Yikes, how do parents juggle it all? This article is designed to give you a few tips to ease the Back- to- School blues.

First, please know that you as parents deserve an applause for being the great parents you are! Your children will benefit greatly from your time, patience and diligence with them. During the school year you will need all of those traits. It is not just back to school time for kids, it is that time for parents too! After all, parents are the ones helping with the homework, driving the carpools, meeting with the teachers, hosting the play-dates and so much more!

Begin the back-to-school preparation by looking in the newspaper or online for the sales on school supplies. Many deals are out there and are necessary with the amount of supplies required

in most schools today. Bring those supplies the first day of school, unless otherwise told. There will be many things to keep track of during the first week of school, so it is good to get these supplies dropped off and out of the way.

After you meet your child’s teacher, take note of his/her email address. This is a great way to communicate with teachers. Many times at open house or school functions, there isn’t time to talk personally with the teacher. Email is a great way to get your questions answered quickly. If you have concerns or something pressing at the beginning of the year, set up a conference.

The best way to know what is going on in your child’s classroom is to volunteer. There are many ways to volunteer at schools today. If you don’t feel comfortable being in the classroom, many times the front office or library will have volunteer opportunities. This will still give you a way to keep up to date with what is happening at school. If you work and don’t have the time to go into the classroom, ask your child’s teacher if there are things you can do with your child at home to still help with classroom

needs. (Ex. Cutting things out, etc.) This is something you can do with your child and they feel pride that you have contributed to their classroom.

Get a routine down sooner than later. The faster you get an after school routine down, the better. Children thrive when there is structure. If they have set times for homework and playtime, it will keep the household less chaotic. Having an afterschool checklist is a great way to have your child see what to do before they can play. For example, when they get home, there is time for a snack, then homework, chores and then they know the remainder of the night is theirs before bed. Keep the checklist somewhere where your child can access it easily. This strategy tends to cut down on argument and leads to a happier household!

As the new school year approaches, keep these few points in mind. The school year can be a crazy time, but the hope is that these few tips will help you out a little.

Advocate for Your Advocates!

Customers and employees play a crucial role in telling your brand story. Relatable and memorable stories starring people that your audience can interact with establishes a rapport with current and potential customers and could lead to an increase in sales.

Customer success stories are great ways to showcase your problem solving skills. Show your audience how you can help them achieve their goals and overcome their challenges through real life stories. Success stories reflect a value driven experience throughout their purchasing journey, which places them at ease.g

Tutorials from people who have previously purchased your products help potential customers visualize how they would use or assemble your product. Think back to the last time you ran an internet search on how to assemble or use a product. Your customers could be in the same position and tutorials from customers who

have been through the process can establish a rapport that could lead to customer loyalty.

Customer feedback is extremely important in a world where product reviews can easily be searched from the palm of our hands. Showcase real customer feedback from customers outside of your company who have objectively reviewed your product or service to give a potential customer a sense of what to expect from your product or service. Customer feedback is the backbone of any company and should be treated as an avenue to highlight your strengths and correct your weaknesses. Showing your audience that you are willing to improve based on their reviews creates a welcoming environment that will encourage return business.

Advocates for your brand can boost feedback by sharing their stories. They have tested your products and services to a higher degree than new customers and can guide them through usage, answer questions,

and provide helpful feedback while shining a positive light on your brand. Your landing page and social media stories are great places to share advocate stories.

Employee journeys are an amazing way to connect with your audience. Show off the benefits of working for your brand. Happy employees create happy customers. When customers know the employees are being treated well, they are more likely to spend money knowing it's helping to maintain a well managed business.

Every single person who comes into contact with your brand creates an emotional impact. Sharing that impact across your social media channels can bring you and your customers together to solve problems and share experiences. A social media strategy including advocacy stories will lead to long term business relationships that promote growth.

Veterans Encouraged to Apply for ETSU STRIVE Program

STRIVE, a free entrepreneurship training program for veterans, reserve and National Guard members, is taking applications for a course that begins September 14.

East Tennessee State University is the second institution in the nation to host a STRIVE program thanks to a partnership with Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families, also known as IVMF.

“Helping those who have or are currently serving our country is an incredible honor,” said ETSU’s Mark Bays, director of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center.

“Nationwide, IVMF has assisted more than 70,000 veteran entrepreneurs, and we are proud

to help that same group here in the Appalachian Highlands.”

The program teaches participants how to launch a business. Following completion of STRIVE, graduates receive post-program support from the national IVMF network.

Consisting of online coursework and evening meetings, the class takes place on the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center at Mountain Home. The program is free and lasts eight weeks.

The university has a long and established history of helping veterans, and has secured the respected Military Friendly designation for more than a decade. For additional information and to apply, visit etsu.edu/strive.

Delayed Gratification

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my 37 years on this planet, it’s that nothing good comes quickly or easily. Whether it’s with regards to health, wealth, or relationships, the best things in life might be free but they definitely don’t come without hard work and the slow hands of Father Time. There are about a million tropes about delayed gratification, and for good reason; when it comes to winning the marathon of life, slow and steady ALWAYS wins the race.

We live in an instant gratification world of privilege with quite literally access to the entire planet at our fingertips. Whatever you could possibly need or want is ready to be delivered with the tap of a button and a credit card, be it basic necessities like food, clothing or shelter or frivolous whimsies of the hearts fleeting desires. Our internet is so fast we can access live streaming information from anywhere in the world at any time of day, and any time we get a single free moment we can open an app to see a rolling feed of what every friend, foe or celebrity is up to on multiple social media platforms. This mindset of “now takes too long” is warped and dangerous. It gives us a false sense of reality that every aspect of our lives should come with the same quickness and ease, when it’s in fact the opposite that is true.

Who you are is built on your daily habits, simple as that. Those miniscule things we do without even noticing add up to the sum total of our core being and the results we’re achieving. The slow, small efforts put in over time are the ones that produce the biggest outcomes; they’re an undeniable reflection of what kind of life we’re living. And there is no injection, pill, online course, or app that can replace that.

The most obvious example of this

theory is of course weight loss. Ozempric is the newest fad in a long line of diet solutions from Slim Fast to PhenPhen to Adkins and South Beach, and what all of these passing fads have in common is that they do. not. work. There is no replacement for consistent healthy habits, and if you’re not going to alter your mindset and day-to-day actions nothing is going to change, regardless of how much you lose quickly. That’s the thing about weight – in the same way it takes years of unnoticeable bad behaviors to pack on the pounds, it takes just as long for it to come off. Anything that speeds that process up isn’t sustainable.

Romantic relationships have also become a casualty of instant gratification. Dating apps have been designed to mimic gambling games and they’re just as addictive. We have the opportunity to chat with hundreds of thousands of people all looking to match at our fingertips any time of day or night. One would think this would INCREASE the odds of finding a partner, when in fact it’s doing just the opposite. This gives the illusion that the “next best thing” might be just around the corner on the next swipe, leading to people never truly willing to settle down. It lessens the effort put in, which decreases the quality of relationships because there’s no true connection being made; for god’s sake the entire premise of dating apps is based on photos alone! And with the recent advances in technology with regards to filters and AI, you don’t even know if something as superficial as looks are as advertised. People are trading meaningful connections with long term, fulfilling satisfaction for constant, tiny microdoses of dopamine from strangers because its quicker and easier than putting in the work of finding a partner.

A couple of months ago, after years of setting grandiose, end-game focused goals and failing each time, I decided to focus only on hitting a few small changes and tracking it every day. These were things I was already doing

a little but was very inconsistent with: getting 8 hours of sleep every night, walking 8k-10k steps every day, getting in 3 strength training sessions and 1 full body workout weekly, weighing in daily, and limiting my alcohol to 4 drinks per week. I didn’t and still don’t hit these goals each and every week, but tracking them has held me accountable and made me much more consistent. It also keeps me focused even when I’m traveling, which is always a huge trigger for me and when I tend to fall off the wagon. Keeping my fitness activity reasonable with simple walking and moderate strength conditioning has been much easier to maintain than my previous mistakes of shooting for daily HIIT cardio followed by 5 days of heavy lifting. And the results are paying off; even though daily I have up and down fluctuations, my average weight each week has dropped and resulted in 8lbs lost in a month, while my strength and endurance during training has went up. My mental health is thriving, I’m sleeping better and when I do flub up, it’s much more noticeable and makes me want to get back on track immediately.

Practicing patience and coming to the realization that long term gratification comes from long term, consistent effort brings me a great deal of comfort. We all want solutions to our problems right now and it can be easy to give up when you don’t see immediate results. Within my own career trajectory I have moments of wanting to scream because I’m still struggling financially following the chaos of the last few years with Covid and inflation. But just yesterday I received word I was accepted into the Nashville Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, a very elite women’s food, beverage and hospitality society. While this doesn’t mean anything for my paygrade, it is a reflection of years of hard work and dedication to my continuing education and networking, which will ultimately open doors and opportunities for me money-

wise. When I was starting my career at 23 I wanted it all right then; almost 15 years later I still don’t have it all, but I do have an impressive resume that includes senior market territory management and titles of Nashville Dame, Executive Bourbon Steward, Certified Cicerone, and being awarded WSET Level 2 in Wine with Distinction, which is beyond the wildest dreams of 23 year old Kathie.

If you want something, delayed gratification is key. Nothing good or sustainable ever just falls into our laps. This doesn’t mean you can only have a good life if you’re out here grinding and sweating and killing yourself; the secret’s in the small steps. Have faith that a combination of consistency and patience is the key to success, then apply it. And remember that perfection is impossible, so accept your missteps, learn the lesson, and get back on track and can’t go wrong!

XO - Kathie

Fast X

It's hard to believe the first ""Fast and Furious" movie was released in 2001(!), and has been spinning off sequel after sequel since then. The first film concentrated on illegal street racing and followed this pattern through the 2009 film "Fast and Furious", until changing the film series into heists and spying plots with the 2011 release "Fast Five". The "Fast" films are Universal Studios largest franchise and there appears to be no stopping the films as they continue to experience box office success. The latest film in the franchise, "Fast X" is currently in theaters and is the first in a planned two part finale. In this effort Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his team: Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), Tej Parker (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Han Lue (Sung Kang), and Ramsey (Natalie Emmanuel), are ordered by the Agency to steal a computer chip in Rome, Italy, that is coveted by the the bad guys of the film. While Dom and Letty sit this mission out, they are told by criminal mastermind Cipher (Charlize Theron) there is someone far worse than her who is out to harm Dom and his family. That person would be Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the son of a drug lord who is seeking revenge against Dom and his crew for the death of his father and the loss of his family's fortune during the events of the 2011 film "Fast Five". After

Pop Life

she reveals this to Dom at his home, she is taken into custody by Little Nobody (Scott Eastwood) who tells Dom there is no Agency mission in Rome, and realizes they have been set up by Dante. Dom and Letty head to Rome to rescue his team from the clutches of Dante. When they arrive in Rome, the duo discover the team has been locked in a truck containing a bomb that if set off, could devastate a large part of the city. After the exciting pursuit to stop the bomb and save his team, Dom is eventually able to guide the bomb into the Tiber River, but the resulting explosion still results in some major damage. As a result of the explosion, Dom and his team are blamed for the bombing, and a multi-million dollar bounty is set for their capture. Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Dom's son Brian "Little B" Marcos is being cared for Dom's sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), and the duo are soon under attack by an armed team out to capture Little B. Dom's brother Jakob (John Cena) arrives in time to save the duo, and takes Little B to a secret location in Portugal, where they will wait of Dom to arrive. Meanwhile, Dom is informed Dante is in Rio de Janeiro, and heads off to confront his new nemesis. When he arrives in Rio, he agrees to race Dante, and the race does not end well for two of the four participating. While this is happening Letty is being held in a prison in Antarctica with Cipher, and the two agreed to work together to form an escape plan. Whew, there is a lot going on in this movie! There are a lot of other happenings that lead to the eventual major showdown between Dom and Dante, which is exciting and overthe-top, as is most of the action in this film. Over the years, fans of the series have expected over-the-top stunts and witty banter between the actors and there is plenty of go around in the latest film. With all the actors making appearances in this film, including Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, and Jason Statham, you would

think it would be hard to stand out in this crowded film, but Momoa does, It's as if the "Aquaman" star has decided to play the Joker in a fancy wardrobe and chew the scenery in every scene he is in. His performance is a sight to behold, and leaves him as one of the best villains of the franchise. The film also features surprise appearances from two other stars featured in past films, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot. There is a mid-credits scene, so don't leave the theater too

soon. The ending leaves you wanting more, and we will get more as "Fast X: Part 2" is scheduled for release in 2025. Despite all the bombast, and amazing special effects, the heart of these films is always family, both related and chosen. "Fast X" is an epic summer film containing all the ingredients for a fun time at the theater. Now playing in theaters.

Director Martin Scorsese is without a doubt one of the alltime great American directors, not to mention film's biggest champion through work he’s done with his group The Film Foundation, which has saved and rescued many movies from the dustbin of history. Of all the films Scorsese has directed,

After Hours

1985’s dark comedy “After Hours” is something of a cult classic. After years of rumors, the movie has finally been added to The Criterion Edition in a wonderful, directorapproved, 4K and standard HD blu-ray edition.

“After Hours” centers around office worker Paul Hackett, played by Griffin Dunne, who heads to downtown New York City to meet up with a woman for a romantic rendezvous. What follows poor Paul is a series of increasing mishaps and anxiety-inducing problems that feel like the makings of a nightmare. Our lowly word processor just wanted some romance in his life, but before dawn comes he’ll be accused of being a burglar and hunted down by Catherine O’Hara driving an ice cream truck.

magnetic masters it sounds clear, shop, and well-defined. Very good bonus features from the old Warner Brothers DVD of the film are carried over here, including a documentary on the film plus a commentary by Scorsese, Schoonmaker, the director of photography, Michael Ballhaus, plus actor Duane and procure Amy Robinson. New features include a wonderful chat between Scorsese and Fran Lebowitz, and a feature on the look of the film with the costume

designer and production designer. Deleted scenes and a trailer round out the extras. Look, you know it’s gonna be a good release if it comes from Criterion, and this time they’ve easily delivered the defining home video edition of one of the true gems of the Scorsese catalog. This new 4K disc is well worth adding to your collection, but don’t try to pick up a bagel and cream cheese paperweight at the same time. See you next week.

It was funny to me that as I watched these awful things happen to our hero, I found myself worked up to a fit of near anxiety myself. I found it all funny, but I also just couldn’t help but think “Oh, you poor man” as I felt my The film looks absolutely fantastic, with dark, inky black images and the bright Neo signs of the street coming through with rich color. It’s really downright amazing how good these Dolby Vision 4K discs can look, with a layer of fine film grain, they truly remind you of being very close to watching a pristine 35mm print in your own home.
