NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

Hello Friends!

Guess what is coming to town???? The Appalachian Fair! The time that all kids and some adults dream about! Rides, games, shows, corn dogs and cotton candy!

I know my family is most excited about the Demolition Derby. My father in law looks forward to going with us every year to see the cars mangle each other while snacking on popcorn with the kids. Such great times! What is your favorite thing about the fair?

Please notice we have some information in The Loafer about Durham Hensley Nursing Home. Great folks there! They are having a ball for their residents soon and could use some formal clothing donations. Rose and Remington in the Johnson Mall will give you a 20% discount if you bring your donation to them. This is a great way to put a smile on the faces of some local mature folks!

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Hello everyone, hope your summer is all you hoped for. It’s hard to believe that it is already August and summer is almost over, but there is still a lot to do. August was originally the eighth month of the year when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar in 46 BC, giving it its modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC, it was renamed in honor of Emperor Augustus. The name Augustus is Latin and means “the venerable one” or “the great one”. August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, and the fifth of seven months to have a length of 31 days. Its zodiac sign is Leo and was originally named Sextilis in Latin because it was the

Beanz Biker Corner

6th month in the original tenmonth Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, with March being the first month of the year. About 700 BC, it became the eighth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar in 46 BC (AUC 708), giving it its modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC, it was renamed in honor of Emperor Augustus. According to a Senatus consultum quoted by Macrobius, he chose this month because it was the time of several of his great triumphs, including the conquest of Egypt. Commonly repeated lore has it that August has 31 days because Augustus wanted his month to match the length of Julius Caesar's July, but this is an invention of the 13th century scholar Johannes de Sacrobosco. Sextilis in fact had 31 days before it was renamed, and it was not chosen for its length. The month of August is often a calm and quiet time of year and the light list of celebrations reflects that stillness. It's a time to relax before the school year starts. But, there are plenty of days to celebrate time with your pets or summertime cuisine. In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, August falls in the season of summer. In the Southern Hemisphere,

the month falls during the season of winter. In many European countries, August is the holiday month for most workers. Numerous religious holidays occurred during August in ancient Rome. Certain meteor showers take place in August. The Kappa Cygnids take place in August, with the dates varying each year. The Alpha Capricornids meteor shower takes place as early as July 10 and ends at around August 10, and the Southern Delta Aquariids take place from mid-July to mid-August, with the peak usually around July 28–29. The Perseids, a major meteor shower, typically takes place between July 17 and August 24, with the days of the peak varying yearly. The star

cluster of Messier 30 is best observed around August. Among the aborigines of the Canary Islands, especially among the Guanches of Tenerife, the month of August received in the name of Beñesmer or Beñesmen, which was also the harvest festival held this month. August's birthstones are the peridot, sardonyx, and spinel. Its birth flower is the gladiolus or poppy, meaning beauty, strength of character, love, marriage and family

August is the Hottest month of the year so stay in the shade and drank a lot of water.

A Few Things To Remember When You Start Your Business

When you open a new business there are a lot of ways to spread the word. Social media is the easiest, cheapest, and fastest way to grow. A few minor details can help your social media accounts shine a light on your business.

A complete profile allows potential customers to find out what they need to know about your business. Can they shop through your online store at 5:00 am? What time does your physical location open? How can customers contact you if they have a question or concern? All of those questions can be answered through your profile and will let your customers know you are focused on service.

Double check your usernames to make sure they are spelled appropriately, are relevant to your business, and consistent. Usernames can be changed, however updating your information after spreading the word will be rough. Clarity in your branding in the early stages will save you time and embarrassment.

Your profile photo shows the world who you are. What image are you projecting? Does it portray the essence of your brand? Your profile photo can make or break your brand and should be chosen with caution. Your community wants to see you succeed and grow. Becoming an active part of your community will create partnerships that can expand

your customer base. Seek out your local businesses and organizations and follow their pages. Sharing their content forms a bond and shows your followers that you are driven by a love of community, not money.

Keeping up to date in your industry helps you stay relevant. Follow pages that are in line with your industry and share relevant content on your pages. Allow your followers to educate themselves on your industry alongside you. Learning together helps you grow together.

Social media is the best way to grow a new business. Taking the time to craft a robust profile will help you connect with the community you serve.

It’s true what they say: with age comes wisdom.

Regarding being wiser within relationships, I believe it to be a combination of age, experience and self-respect. It might seem outlandish that a person who has remained romantically single for over 5 years and has whittled her friend group down to less than a handful would be proud of those numbers, but for me it’s a sign of growth and raising my standards. In looking back over the years at the things I tolerated and accepted that ultimately stunted my personal growth for the sake of companionship, a small circle of friends and being self-sufficient is far better than the alternative.

Single Standards

The idea for this article came to me as I was paying my monthly expenses. Each pay period, I go ahead and pay up all my bills that fall within that cycle, that way I can budget what is leftover accordingly and know I’ve covered the must have’s before spending on something frivolous. As I sat here watching my bank account dwindle, I strangely felt a sense of pride. While it doesn’t feel great to hand out my hardearned money to property managers, Verizon and Citi Bank month after month, it does feel good to know I alone am able to handle my business. I’ve built a lifestyle I enjoy and don’t have to rely on anyone else to expense it, which comes with the luxury of not having to tolerate anything that brings aggravation to my life. Becoming self-sufficient has empowered me because now I know my worth and treat my relationships like any other investment; is it going to add value to what I currently have or is it going to drive my stock down?

In my potential romantic relationships, I’ve created a mental list of questions that I tick off as I get to know someone. I live an amazing, fulfilling and busy life. For me to allow someone to disrupt that, they are going to have to be able to offer an enhancement, something better than what I’m currently giving myself. If they can’tor worse - they subtract from my current joy, why would I bother?

For example, I love my home space. I love the location, the neighborhood, the city. Within my home, nothing brings me greater joy than keeping it tidy and smelling good, furnished with whites and pastels, and free from clutter. I revel in the fact I get to watch unlimited Golden Girls any time I want, I can eat cold pasta in front of the fridge in my underwear with abandon, and I get 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep with my little dog like a starfish in the middle of my all-white bed. If I become involved with someone, they are going to disrupt this thing

that brings me so much happiness. It might be a positive disruption, like they could be someone to snuggle with or turn me on to a new favorite show, or teach me to cook something new. But it also could be a negative disruption; they might snore all night, leave water and toothpaste all over the bathroom sink, or eat all my groceries. That devalues my life, brings me more work and headache, so why would I bother? As I get to know someone I must ask, if I already love my home this much why should I let you in if you’re not going to give me something I don’t already have? Are you going to be neat and respectful of my space or even clean? Down the road, can you offer me a nicer or larger home than I can offer myself? Are you going to help me sleep better at night or are you going to keep me awake with tossing and turning or worse, with anxiety? If you’re not adding value to my home, you have to go because you’re driving down the market average.

I also have enough experience under my belt to know I’ve endured the most painful moments of my life alone and survived. I don’t need a shoulder to cry on; sure it would be nice, but its not necessary. So looking down the road to things that I might face – aging parents, inflation, unexpected job loss, illness, an alien invasion - are you going to alleviate stress during these hardships, or are you going to add to them? Will you stand by me at my lowest point or are you going to dip out and save yourself? If you’re not going to be of assistance when the going gets tough, you’ve got to get going.

Even with friendships, I no longer have the energy to invest into dead end situations that are holding me back. Sadly, people grow at different rates, down different paths, and sometimes those paths come to a fork and you must go separate ways. If your goals don’t align with mine, if our futures don’t look similar, if you’re not working as hard or harder than me for big

things, it is only going to hold me back. I’ve had to learn the hard way that you can’t want health and happiness for someone more than they want it for themselves, so you have to release it, or it will consume your life too. You’re the sum total of the 5 people you spend the most time with; look around and if they aren’t living the life you want, why are you immersing yourself in it?

I suggest that every single woman I know curate the same list for herself, even write it down to remind yourself that YOU are an asset. YOU are your biggest and best investment. Stop devaluing yourself by tolerating things that subtract joy from your life just to have companionship. Build a life all on your own that makes you so happy, you don’t even notice if someone is there to enjoy it with you. It will make you very selective in who you grant access to and serve for higher quality partners and friends in the future.

Indiana Jones and the DIal of Destiny

The character of Indiana Jones has been a part of pop culture since 1981 when he first appeared in the film "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Here we are in 2023 with a new film once again starring Harrison Ford in the lead role. Considering Ford's age, perhaps the film should be titled "Indiana Jones on a Senior Citizen's Adventure", but instead we have "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny". All kidding aside, it's nice to see Ford back in a role he is best known for, aside from Han Solo in the "Star Wars" franchise. This Indiana Jones adventure is the first in the series that is neither directed by Steven Spielberg or conceived by George Lucas. However, both men served as executive producers. The film flashes back to 1945 where Indiana is captured by the Nazis after he and Basil Shaw (Toby Jones) have attempted to retrieve an item called the Lance of Longinus (the spear that is alleged to have pierced the side of Jesus) from a castle in the French Alps. Indiana and Basil discover the Lance is fack, but half of Archimedes Dial (an ancient device created by Archimedes which reveals time fissures which could allow time travel) has been found. Jones manages to escape the castle and the Nazis with Basil and the Dial in tow. The film then flashes forward to 1969 where an

Pop Life

elderly Jones is living in New York City, where he is about to retire from Hunter College. His wife Marion (Karen Allen), who aided him in two previous archaeological adventures has filed for separation because Indiana has become so depressed after the death of their son in the Vietnam War. As if the separation isn't enough of a shock, Jones' archaeologist goddaughter Helana Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) shows up claiming she wants to research the Dial. Jones tells Helana her father was obsessed with the Dail and gave it to Jones to destroy, which he neglected to do. When Jones and Helena go to Hunter College to retrieve the dial they are attacked by accomplices of the film's bad guy scientist and astrophysicist Jurgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), a "former" Nazi, who has been hired by NASA to help run the Apollo moon landing program. Voller has designs on the Dial in order to use it for personal gains. Meanwhile, Jones has no idea Helena wants to sell the Dial on the black market. Jones and Helena manage to escape Voller's men, with Helena leaving with the Dial on her own. Helena takes off for Tangier where she plans on auctioning off the Dial, and with the help of old friend Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), Jones is able to flee the U.S. after being framed for murders he did not commit, and head to Tangier in search of Helena and the Dial. Jones manages to find Helena and her teenage sidekick Teddy (Ethann Isidore) in Tangier at the auction. After disrupting the auction, Jones, Helena and Teddy find themselves in pursuit of Voller's henchmen after they steal the Dial from the auction. The trio eventually wind up in Greece where Voller and his men have taken the Dial. While in Greece, the trio team up with Renaldo (Antonio Banderas), an old friend of Jones who is an expert frogman. Renaldo will help Jones and crew dive to an ancient shipwreck to discover a tablet

containing directions to the Dial's other half. Will Jones and crew find the other half of the Dial? Will they be captured, chased and survive? Will they time travel? Will the film have a happy ending? I refuse to answer any of those questions to avoid spoiling the fun of the film. Overall, the film is fun despite some flaws of which in my opinion, are the time travel sequence, and teen Teddy suddenly "discovering" he can fly a plane. While the time travel sequence was fun, it caused the film to go a bit over-the-top. Those

opinions aside, I did enjoy the film, as feelings of nostalgia were present throughout the film, with Ford fitting back into the role of Jones like he was sliding back into a pair of comfortable shoes. In "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" we get a young Jones, an old Jones, and plenty of action and adventure making this a good summer "popcorn" flick. Now playing in theaters. (Rated PG-13)

Being Driven to Madness by Speakers

There’s been a strange sort of going on happening with my home theater for the past two years. Last year, I had to replace a speaker in the setup, the 20-year-old “surround sound in a kit” speakers that I’ve had since I was in High School are starting to show their age. The center speaker went out last year, it began to get a weird “buzzing” sound around the dialogue. I replaced the speaker and went on with my life. I now fear what the summer will bring when it comes to my home theater. I had been away for a week and when I returned home and had unpacked I decided to settle in and play the new Zelda game. As I began the play the game, which is in surround sound if you have the right equipment, I couldn’t help but notice something didn’t sound quite right. I picked up the remote to my A/V receiver, which everything is routed through, and ran the sound test mode.

The sound test sends a series of white noise, that sounds like a soft static, to each of the six speakers in the system. It sends them in order, and on the receiver’s display panel it shows you which speakers it’s sending the sound to. I could hear the sound coming from the Center, Right, Right Surround, and Left Surround

speakers. Then the song moved to my front Left speaker and it was far quieter than it should be.

I figured I must have knocked loose a wire when I was behind my home theater the other week trying to adjust some things. I picked up the speaker and the positive part of the write came sliding right out, then the entire spring clip for the positive terminal fell right out. I don’t know why, but I guess maybe 20 years of pressure caused the plastic to snap. Resigned to the fact it was time to replace speakers again, off I went to the store.

After a quick look at what was in the shop, along with a lazy Google search to see what the reviews were, I picked out a nice part of lower-higher-endgrade speakers. They appeared to be very well-regarded, the lowest review I could find was a four-star review. I bought them, took them home, and set them up. They were much larger than the older speakers, so it took some time to get them placed just right.

I very excited grabbed my audiophile grade, high-resolution, copy of Marshall Crenshaw’s first album—a favorite of mine—and put it on. I hit play ready to be blown away, and…I wasn’t impressed. The music sounded kinda flat and muddy. I was

super confused. I looked back at all the reviews I read and all of them talked about how sharp and clear the sound was.

I felt like I was going crazy, was I being gaslit? All the reviews raved, but everything I played just sounded flat and muddy. I spent the entire Monday evening just running over this in my mind. I am both an overthinker and a perfectionist, so as you can well imagine this made for a really fun (sarcasm) and sleepless night for me that Monday. I was more dreading that I was going to have to go return the speakers, then try to find something else, all with the fear that the next speakers I’d get I’d have the same issues with.

In my restlessness that night, it hit me “You know, those are significantly different speakers than the old ones. Maybe I should run the calibration mode on my receiver and see if it makes a difference?”

Most, if not all, modern surround sound A/V receivers come with a little microphone you place at your listening position. You plug it in and turn on the calibration mode and the receiver will run a series of tones, sounds, and signals out of each speaker to calibrate itself for the room space.

That made all the difference in

the world. Suddenly my new speakers sounded amazing, just like all those glowing reviews said. What changed? Turns out the old speakers, which were smaller, didn’t have a lot of bass or low-end, so to make up for that, my receiver was taking all the low-end out and routing it to the subwoofer. The new ones have plenty of bass, so the lowend doesn’t need to go to the sub anymore. That was why it sounded flat and muddy, it was missing the low end.

I’m now super happy with how things sound, it’s added a lot more dimension and dynamics to the ole Andyplex (which is the cute name I call my home theater). I must admit, however, that I do fear that since there have been two summers in a row where I’ve had to replace speakers, next summer I will be doing this all over again with the surround speakers—which are still the 20-year-old ones I’ve had since I was in high school. We shall keep our fingers crossed but also start doing some research into what may be a good replacement for them. I’ll just know to recalibrate everything when that time comes. See you next week.
