Letchworth & Baldock District Scout Council

Co-ordinator 10 and 11 June 2017 at Boyd Field, Henlow

Over four hundred young people and Leaders enjoyed the activities laid on by the District at Boyd Field in Henlow over a weekend in June. On the Saturday the campsite was over run by Beavers and Scouts. On Sunday it was the turn of the Cubs and Explorer Scouts.

Activities included: - Climbing wall, rafting, shooting, inflatables, go-karting, rocket launching, crafts and toasting marshmallows and dampers.

Codicote Reptiles - Matt and Jade brought along some of their reptile friends to meet the young people. This included snakes and lizards. They are available for educational visits.

I really liked the fun day, particularly holding the snakes. They were called Boris, King Geoff the First and Poppy.

My favourite was Boris who I got to hold a lot.

I quite liked the rifle shooting but I didn't hit the target once!

The Kaitlin Anderson Award At the District AGM, Daniel Money was presented with the Kaitlin Anderson award which recognises young people in Scouting who face extra challenges but do not allow their problems to stop them taking part.

Daniel has hearing problems but does not let them stop him doing anything. He is keen and very active in Explorers and a great member of Oak Eagle Unit.

Well done Daniel.

“In 1952 I started an apprenticeship in the printing trade. Later Shirley began working at the same place, and it was there that we first met. Our first date was when I asked if I could go to church with her.

We became engaged to be married on her birthday 22 February 1957. We were married in Hitchin on 13 July 1957. Between those dates I was conscripted for National Service on June 13.

Our “honeymoon” was a visit to the Broadway cinema, Letchworth. Next day I travelled back to Portsmouth to continue basic army training.

How to stay in a long marriage? We have both kept to the promises we made to each other.

We have done many things together, but have also followed separate interests with encouragement from each of us. We have a strong faith, good family and many good friends.”

Mick is a member of the Wymondley Wood Executive Committee and was a Cub Scout Leader and Shirley was a Brownie Leader.

Bath Time at Oak Eagle

On a Monday evening in June, Oak Eagle Explorer Scout Unit went to St Paul’s Warden to help out in the walled garden at Down in the Woods forest school. We went along to help with some jobs and had a great time.

We put a roof on the log store, cleared some ground to extend a play area, put down wood chips, did some weeding in the raised beds and along the hedge line. We were treated to marshmallow and drink but no one wanted to stop work.

This was a great place to go, beautiful area and so much fun to be had. It would be suitable for all ages and easy to do some badge work or out side learning. Take a look at their website and fit it into your programme.

On Saturday 3rd June, seven Colonies gathered at 8th Letchworth Headquarters for this year’s annual District Beaver Challenge.

Ashwell won last year and were hosting.

The first challenge was to build a Lego model and then see whose went the furthest across the floor.

Then it was outside for some navigation and other team games.

The favourite seems to have been the poo game.

The Beavers had to carry a ball between their legs and then make their way to a bucket that they had to squat over and drop the ball into !

Another challenge of getting a ball from one side to the other using only 6 pieces of guttering proved a bit too tricky for some Beavers, with balls flying everywhere !

A quick drink and biscuit break after the tug of war and then all back inside for some mental challenges.

Once the scores were added up it was very very close, with 1 point separating 2 nd and 3rd places, The overall winners were Ashwell, so their turn to host again next year. I think the moral of the story is not to choose activities that you have previously done at your own meetings, that your Beavers are good at !

Thanks to all the Leaders, helpers and Beavers for another very entertaining District Beaver Challenge.

After much consideration, Darren Greener has decided to step down from his District Role as ADC Cubs. I'm sure we would all like to thank Darren for his great efforts during his time in the role. It is much appreciated. Thank you Darren.
