Co-ordinator The Rotary Club of Letchworth Garden City The Garden City Charity Walk

The Rotary Club Garden City Charity walk took place on Sunday 21 May. It is one of the main fund raising events for the Scouts. Six Groups from the District took part either walking or providing refreshments at Norton Bury and Wymondley Wood.

For every ÂŁ1 of sponsorship the Group keeps 75p with the rest going to the Rotary to support their charities.

The date for next year’s walk is Sunday 20 May 2018.

I wanted to add a slight change to things and assumed teams would cope, I was proven wrong. So next year I'll revert to the previous year’s team competition, as the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Peter Elmer 1935 - 2017

Peter and his sister were born in Letchworth and went to school there too.

When he left school Peter took an apprenticeship as an engineering draughtsman.

He joined the RAF for National Service.

Peter and Rose met through Scouting and they were married in 1990. Peter has been a much loved step dad to Jon and Richard and step grandad to Dan, Holly and Megan.

Peter always lived locally to Letchworth and Hitchin and consequently built up a tremendous group of friends and this is reflected in the large number of condolence cards received by Rose and the family – these cards highlight the generous way Peter and Rose shared their time and skills with others.

Peter has been very involved in various organisations for many years, including Christchurch in Hitchin fulfilling many roles including the Lunch Club - Cardiac Friends (both the art group and the walking group) - Letchworth Art Society. Peter has painted and exhibited many lovely pieces and has also sold a good number including commissions. Peter also helped at the Queen Mother theatre as part of the sound and lighting technical team.

Many people have enjoyed being fed by Rose and Peter – they loved cooking and took great pleasure sharing food for so many different occasions – Cub Camp, Lochearnhead expeditions, weddings, birthdays, family occasions – they were always happy to cater whether they were feeding 4 people or 104 – great menus efficiently produced with minimum fuss !

Scouting featured regularly in Peter and Rose’s life – Cubs / Scouts – in Hitchin District Peter was ADC Cubs, Group Scout Leader, Cub leader – grey wolf - more recently he has been very involved on the committee of the Letchworth and Baldock Active Support Unit, the Scout Gang Show in Hitchin and also in Letchworth and Baldock District.

The Hertfordshire Scout Station in Scotland Lochearnhead was a very special place - last visited in 2012 Rose and Peter were particularly delighted that grandson Dan was a member of the expedition. Rose and Peter were usually to be found in the kitchen keeping the expeditions well fed - there are fond memories of Scouts waiting at the kitchen door for Pete’s bread pudding to be ready !

As was highlighted in the last edition of Co-ordinator Peter was presented with the Commissioner’s Commendation by Hartley just the week before he sadly died.

Peter – you shared your life with us in so many ways but most of all we have enjoyed friendship from a true gentleman.

8th Letchworth Scout Troop Water Sports Camp Gilwell We went camping at Gilwell from Friday to Monday, which was my first camp away as a Scout so I was a little nervous.

On Friday night when we arrived we put up our tents and had hot chocolate and cake.

rules. We then gathered by one of the rafts to invest my friend Hannah. We all had to jump in at the start and go to the end and it was freezing. We then got on the raft and went down the course.

On Saturday morning we were put into groups for kayaking or crate stacking. I did kayaking first and this was fun because we also got to play games whilst on the water and no one fell in.

White water rafting was my favourite activity and I can't wait to do it again.

We then went back for lunch where we swapped with the other group to go and do crate stacking. The crate stacking was really good fun but my partner was a boy yuk! Someone managed to get the highest score and beat their brother at the same time.

In the morning we went to build rafts it was really fun even though our raft was not very sturdy so I didn't get on it. Millie, Josh and Lewis all fell in the water. We then went back to pack up our tents and get ready to go home.

On Sunday we had to get up early because we had to be at white water rafting .Once we arrived at the centre we got told the safety

We went on our water sports camp at Gilwell Park. We had a lot of fun there! To get there we went on the mini bus and it took around 50 minutes. When we got there we unpacked our tents and got them sorted out, then once we had put the tents up we put the dining shelters up.

Kayaking: When we did our kayaking we all went out on the lake and we played some games on the water in our kayaks. The best game was when we had to walk across the kayaks on the water and try not to fall in – it was REALLY hard to keep your balance! The kayaks had holes in the bottom too and we all got absolutely soaked!

Crate Stacking: When we did crate stacking we got into pairs, had two crates to stand on and the higher you No: 648

In the evening we played rounders, had a talent show and then we played man hunt before going to bed.

I really enjoyed my first Scout camp and don't know why I was worried. Thanks to all the Leaders and helpers for a fab weekend.

Maddi 8th Letchworth Scout got, the more wobbly it became … the winner got 14 crates which was the maximum possible!

In the evenings we had the usual delicious food which we made ourselves (with a bit of help from the leaders) and then had free time to explore the woods where we played Manhunt and 50-50 which was great!

White Water Rafting was definitely my favourite activity of the weekend – we did it on the 2012 Olympic course – the water filled up the raft and we tilted on our side, nearly tipping us in! Luckily the raft recovered so we carried on to the end and then did it all again – about 10 times!

Overall the weekend was one of my favourite camps so far – thank you Leaders for such a great camp - can’t wait until the next one!

I have really enjoyed my first Scout camp. We had an amazing time camping at Gilwell, we slept there from Friday to Monday and did loads of fun activities. In crate stacking Eva and Millie got the highest amount of crates. On Sunday we had to get up early because we had to be at white water rafting by 8:00am. Once we arrived at the white water rafting we got told the safety rules. We then gathered by one of the rafts to invest Hannah. Once we were on the rafts and in the rapids Millie fell in and our boat almost capsized. White water rafting was my favourite activity. Over the recent months I have had to question a number of First Aid qualifications that have been submitted to me for entering and validating onto the Compass Database so I thought I should send out this note with the following extract from the Scout’s website for your information and guidance.

The important and vital thing to remember is that First Response – Module 10, has a very specific syllabus set out by the Scout Association and unless the course you are attending covers EVERY element, it cannot be signed off as fulfilling the requirements of the Scout Association.

The following is an extract from scouts.org.uk/members website May 2017 Module 10 - First Response Leaders, managers and supporters in Scouting must hold a current first aid qualification at the time of gaining their Wood Badge and at the appointment renewal. However, they are encouraged to keep their qualification up to date at all times. The minimum standard for this qualification is First Response, but higher levels of qualification are needed if delivering first aid training or leading certain kinds of adventurous activities. This provision will ensure a minimum standard of first aid knowledge and training across the Movement.

Criteria for course All courses must cover the below criteria. The level of detail and time spent on each subject will vary, depending on whether it is a First Response or Full First Aid course. ·

Management of an unconscious casualty (child or adult)

CPR, including technique for children and an explanation of what AED is and how to use it

Causes and treatment of unconsciousness

Fractures (ambulance imminent and non-imminent) and soft tissue injuries
