Season 1 Episode 4 The Pinelands
The Pinelands, A National Reserve A tribute to the beauty of one of New Jersey’s most important regions. Cover photo Keeping a Vigil Sara Ascalon
We are delighted to host The Pinelands, a group exhibition of 24 artists whose artwork focuses on the area known as the Pinelands in New Jersey – a UNESCO World Biosphere Preserve. This exhibition of Photography, Drawings, Paintings and Mixed Media showcases the beauty of nature, rich landscapes, wildlife habitats, changing weather and unique architectural structures. Through the eyes of these artists we discover the real and often hidden treasures of the Pinelands and its mystical beauty. Their individual mediums depict changes in seasons, the variety of light, and the observation of the special creatures and plant life cohabitating the land. Newly designated as the Pine Barrens Scenic Byway, this 130-mile byway route takes the traveler through six southern counties. The National Scenic Byway designation provides prestige, national and international recognition to the area, while enhancing efforts to preserve the Pinelands by increasing awareness and encouraging the stewardship of the region’s resources. The Pinelands exhibition offers an exceptional example of the intersection of the arts with the sciences at the LBIF, both visually as well as ecologically forming a unique accessible relationship.

The Pinelands Exhibition March 23May 31, 2021
Interestingly, The Pinelands National Reserve is the first Reserve in the nation. It is not a National Park or National Monument. It is comprised of 1.1 million acres of land in Southern New Jersey and it encompasses 22% of NJ’s land mass, making it the largest forested area between New Hampshire and Virginia. Also known as the Pine Barrens, this name was carried over from the 1700’s when it was discovered normal farming crops would not grow there due to its acidity. In reality, it is far from barren! It is the third largest producer of both cranberries and blueberries in the nation. Its estuaries are some of the cleanest on the East Coast because the water of the Pine Barrens is acidic but pure. It holds one of the largest aquifers on the East Coast at 17 trillion gallons of water. Most everyone in and around the Pinelands gets their water from it. The Pinelands are New Jersey’s quiet, undiscovered gems. In addition to this exhibition in May, the LBIF plans to host a series of Science Saturdays devoted to the discussion of the Pinelands and a Gallery walk through the exhibition by one of the artists. Please check our website for more information. This Sneak Peek offers a glimpse of the artwork created by the twenty four invited artists on display in the gallery. Support the Foundation with your purchase of the artwork created by these talented artists!
