SUMMER 2024

WHO WE ARE

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

FELLOW MEMBERS

I hope that you have all had a safe and prosperous off season. I trust that you are all as excited about the upcoming season as I am. There is nothing like watching the seasonal revitalization of LBI as businesses and restaurants continue to reopen. (Of course, I’m sure we’d all be just as happy if we “revitalize” the traffic lights a little later (maybe just before Labor Day?)).

Last year, our 75th anniversary year, capped a successful post-pandemic return to normal. There were no shutdowns, no mask mandates, no occupancy restrictions and no resurgences of COVID. Instead, we had wonderful weather, a full slate of art and cultural activities, bustling tennis and pickleball courts, sold out children’s camps, the most successful House Tour ever, and so much more.

While we had our challenges, our staff—especially our Executive Director, Daniella Kerner— kept the Foundation’s operations functioning efficiently and without disruption to member services. To them I express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

As we prepare for the 2024 season, I wanted to update you on year two of the aggressive capital improvement programs we undertook during the winter of 2022-23. Since Labor Day last year, we have:

✔Installed a new HVAC system for the main building;

✔Installed new lighting for the gallery;

✔Completed a new roof on the main building;

✔Replaced aging playground equipment for our camp;

✔Upgraded tennis grounds and amenities, including the donation of a golf cart for court maintenance (courtesy of Lee and Joy Luedtke);

✔Replaced all three roofs on the camp building;

✔Completed miscellaneous capital improvements with monies received from NJSCA Grant of $100K;

✔Augmented the staffing in our ceramics studio;

✔Added two additional pickleball courts, bringing the number of courts to four; and

✔Renovated the office in the main building.

These projects were financed through funds dedicated to capital improvements, various grants, and the extreme generosity and support of the members who contributed to our Annual Appeal.

As of the date of this letter, we project that we will continue to build on the successes of 2023, which saw:

Growing membership, including our Blai and tennis memberships; Thriving summer camp enrollment because of expanded offerings and contemporary curricula; Expanded business and community relationships; A record number of art exhibitions, films, concerts and social events. For those of you who play tennis and pickleball, I think you will agree that Brent, Tom, and Kristen brought a real passion to the courts last year. Their focus on the member experience was a breath of fresh air and they continue to be desirous of doing everything they can to making the LBIF the premier tennis operation on the Island.

I have previously described our ceramics studio as a “hidden gem,” with its state-of-the-art kilns and facilities for experienced and beginner potters alike. My goal is to lose the word “hidden,” by providing programming designed to introduce the ceramics arts to members of all ages. We have increased our staffing in the ceramics studio and I expect to ramp up programing for beginners and more seasoned ceramics devotees alike. I encourage you to stop by and speak to Jeff, Christina and some of our ceramics members about this fascinating art form.

My main priority for 2024 is quite simple: we need to continue to maintain our focus on growing our membership and enhancing the member experience. Like any community-based organization, our members are the lifeblood of the Foundation. And it’s not enough to simply bring in new members. We need to retain those new members by providing them with a welcoming community, quality services and enjoyable programming. A member that joins for a year and then fails to renew because they had a bad experience is more detrimental than never having signed up the new member in the first place. So I would ask each of you to encourage your friends and neighbors to become Foundation members—especially young families that can become generational contributors to our LBIF community. Educate them about all the Foundation has to offer for people of all ages. Bring them to the Foundation to visit. Invite them to attend a concert, visit an art show, play tennis or pickleball, or try their hand at ceramics. Direct them to our website so that they can see for themselves all that we have to offer. I know that if we can engage with them at some level, we can persuade them to join us as members.

In addition, thanks to the extreme generosity of Ken Stein and Sandy Strine, the Foundation is the beneficiary of an endowment trust that will generate funds that are specifically dedicated to capital improvements to our property and equipment. This should enable us to continue our capital improvement journey. While we have a list of projects still to be undertaken, I welcome your thoughts in this regard.

Finally, fundraising is critical to the sustainability of the Foundation. Membership dues, tennis and camp revenue contribute to our operating budget, but capital improvements are only possible through the generosity of our members. We sincerely thank those families who have made gifts to the Foundation in addition to their yearly dues and we hope you will continue to keep us in mind during our next Annual Appeal.

As I look forward to the 2024 summer season, I would encourage and challenge you do something, whether large or small, to ensure an even brighter future for the Foundation. Everyone can contribute in some way, whether financially or in less tangible ways.

I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the past few years. We have returned the Foundation to a stable fiscal footing and I remain confident that we are well positioned to flourish for years to come. Here’s wishing you all a safe and healthy 2024 and another wonderful LBI summer.

In closing, I encourage all of you to take a few seconds to thank our staff when you are visiting the Foundation. It is their hard work and dedication that keeps the Foundation the vibrant cultural center that it is today.

Sincerely,

THE STAFF

ABOUT

LBIF HISTORY

Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural center. Blai, a student of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the founding Dean of Tyler School of Art, Temple University, envisioned a unique facility that would foster individuals, and their talents, while enjoying summertime at the Jersey shore.

Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Rivne, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 Blai arrived in Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor, Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich. After coming to America, in 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. In 1935 he founded The Tyler School of Art, Temple University’s degree granting art school located in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania where he remained Dean until his retirement in 1960.

The LBIF has continued Blai’s vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences. Though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a year-round organization providing a place for learning, free expression, new experiences, and the exchange of ideas and understanding.

Celebrating LBIF’s 75th anniversary in 2023, we recognized our past Presidents, who along with their board of trustees, staff, members, volunteers, and supporters have enabled the LBIF to remain the cultural anchor of this region. To mark this milestone, we recognized these Presidents who gave of their time, vision and wisdom to sustain LBIF and its priceless 22-acre campus.

Conaty will emphasize how the artist’s inquisitive approach to artmaking guided many of the curatorial decisions and thematic considerations put forth in the show in an effort to honor Asawa’s belief that “art is not a series of techniques, but an approach to learning, to questioning, and to sharing.”

The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement

Presented By Anna O. Marley, Chief of Curatorial Affairs of Historical American Art, at PAFA, and Juror of the Plein Air Plus Exhibition

Date Sunday, September 15; 2:00pm

FREE Admission

Inspired by European impressionist paintings of open countryside, private gardens, and urban parks, American artists working in the years between 1887 and 1920 turned their attentions to the new landscapes being created in the fast-changing cities and rapidly emerging suburbs of their own country.

The Artist’s Garden tells the intertwined stories of American art and the new American garden movement in the years on either side of the turn of the twentieth century. In this lecture Marley will discuss artists alongside the books, journals, and ephemeral artifacts that both shaped and were products of the garden movement. Employing the interdisciplinary perspectives of horticultural and art history, The Artist’s Garden places special emphasis on the mid-Atlantic region as the epicenter of a national garden movement and considers the impact of impressionism not on American painting alone, but on the nation’s culture at large.

Join Suze for this 5 day hands on workshop focusing on bowls that change in size and utility, from small finger bowls, to larger serving bowls, to nesting bowls. Some strategies for making bowls will include investigating what foods and festivities influence their form. You will take pots out of the round, exploring bowl forms on and off the wheel, using altering techniques and hand built slabs.

You will explore how to finish surfaces with texture and slip application techniques that will enhance each piece. Sketching and writing exercises, historical source materials, and images will be shared as we explore ideas about mark making on 3D form, and will guide exploration and play.

ABOUT Suze Lindsay

Suze’s formal ceramic studies started with a 2 year CORE fellowship at Penland School of Craft, followed by earning an MFA at Louisiana State University. She returned to Penland School of Craft as a long term artist in residence. After completing those 3 years in residence, her goals focused on creating life as a full time studio potter, setting up her studio in Penland’s rich craft community with her husband, and fellow potter, Kent McLaughlin. Working with stoneware clay, Lindsay subtly suggests figure and character by manipulating forms after they are thrown. An integral part of her work includes surface decoration to enhance her pottery forms by patterning and painting slips and glazes for salt firing. Her mark making is strongly influenced by studying historical ceramics from cultures in Japan, Crete, Chile, China, and Native North American.

Driving down the Boulevard on a typical April weekday, I saw a group of bulldozers taking down another large tract of indigenous vegetation, clearing it to make room for a new home for a fortunate family. First, I grimaced…it made me very sad to witness, once again. On the other hand, LBI attracts like-minded people who appreciate how special and different LBI is as compared to other seaside coastal areas in New Jersey. It is said that the Foundation is the last largest tract of the “original parcels”- 22+ acres from the Boulevard to the Bay, acquired in 1948 - which remains intact along with its natural landscape. It is irreplaceable. I am proud to say that to this day LBIF continues to be a vibrant cultural center, offering exceptional programs within a welcoming community for all to enjoy.

We are the stewards of Boris Blai’s vision and keepers of his legacy. I am eternally grateful for his foresight and grand accomplishment to build a unique building and create a campus dedicated to the arts and the sciences on a barrier island! I am also grateful to the people of his generation who supported this vision to make it happen. I thank the seven decades of Board members, volunteers, members, artists, scientists, teachers and members who championed the mission of the LBIF as a cultural anchor of LBI and as a center for creativity and education for all age groups.

I wish to thank our current Board members whose commitment and talents contribute to our stability and direction. Thanks to our wonderful, creative, dedicated staff - all of whom wear many hats in order to keep the million things we do go smoothly. Our youth camp staff and the team for our many social events are amazing. The fantastic work of the many Chairs and Committee members; the Art Committee, Science Committee, Performing Arts Committee, House Tour Committee, to name a few cannot be overlooked. The hundreds of volunteers, and in particular our House Tour volunteers, make all these events and programs found in these pages possible. Thanks to the business community who we value and partner with. Thank you to our non-profit partners in the sciences and the arts who help us build a stronger community with our shared interests. Thanks to our visitors who come through our doors, year-round; I hope you return again and again. And finally, a sincere thank you to all our Members and their families, both our longtime members and our new members, who keep LBIF alive and thriving each year because of their commitment, involvement, support and love of the LBIF.

Please consider being a member if you have not yet joined, and please remember to renew if you have not yet done so. Membership is what keeps our doors open, both in the summer and year-round. As a non-profit, our members provide the ongoing support; donations allow the LBIF to flourish; our community keeps us vital. It is this continued support that sustains the Foundation now and enables us to expand our mission for the future. And it is up to us to protect and maintain this special place, now and for future generations. As beneficiaries of this trust, please join me in building a bright, exciting, innovative and inspired future.

My very best wishes for all,

Through the birthdate, we will explore how these numerical vibrations can reveal one’s life path, personal year, inner strengths and future tendencies. We will also work with your name and find the Soul Urge, The Secret Self and the Expression. Sound is the result of vibration – which is only another way of saying that every sound has a number behind it.

This workshop is designed as an entry-level opportunity, perfect for those new to the subject, however all levels welcome! Please bring a notebook and pen/pencil.

THE NATURE TRAIL

The Nature Trail at the LBIF was created to provide a unique and peaceful experience for visitors of the last wild Bayfront property on Long Beach Island. As the largest (privately owned) preserved saltmarsh on the island, it is home to a diverse array of wildlife and provides critical ecosystem services to our coastal community. From a barrier island perspective, the saltmarsh is our Foundation.

Estuaries and their surrounding wetlands help stabilize shorelines, protect inland habitats, and defend human property from coastal flooding and sea level rise. They also play an important role in reducing climate change, as they act as a carbon sink. Although when coastal wetlands are damaged, their ability to sequester carbon can be lost. In the coming years and decades, our salt marshes will be on the front line of a rising sea. Every action to reduce our environmental impact today, will increase the chance that places like this will be around for future generations to visit and admire. - Ben Wurst, Conserve Wildlife

Activities include migratory and nesting bird surveys, northern diamondback terrapin monitoring, and wildlife habitat enhancement. CWF will also provide two weeks of wildlife-focused summer camp led by the biologists who carry out the organization’s mission to preserve rare and at-risk wildlife in New Jersey. We will work together to ensure that LBI is a sustainable home for vulnerable wildlife species, and a place whose residents and visitors are engaged in the natural world around them.

Under the guidance of our experts, campers will explore different methods to study at-risk species. From observation techniques to the use of modern technologies, such as GPS tracking, campers will gain firsthand knowledge and hands-on experience in wildlife research. Campers will participate in a range of activities, including monitoring diamondback terrapin nests, enhancing habitat for wildlife species, exploring the marsh ecosystem to identify fauna and flora, and contributing to important pollinator populations. This week will culminate in a special opportunity to explore insects from around the world, providing campers with a fascinating glimpse into the diversity of insect life and their ecological importance.

$410

From collecting nesting data of osprey and oystercatchers to the thrill of getting “up close and personal” with raptors during a live wildlife show, campers will gain insights into bird behavior and conservation efforts. On the final day, campers will visit a special nesting site near Barnegat Light. Here, they will spend an afternoon exploring the beach and engaging in activities such as using spotting scopes for a chance to observe endangered species of beach nesting birds in their natural habitat.
