THE LONG BEACH ISLAND FOUNDATION
OF THE ARTS & SCIENCES SUMMER 2018
WHO WE ARE WHO WE ARE
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
LBIF STAFF
Dear LBIF Community,
Christine Mesagna Office Manager cmesagna@lbifoundation.org
Welcome to the 70th anniversary summer catalog for the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences. What an accomplishment, in these times, to have kept an arts organization alive and thriving for 70 years!
Alison Bozoski Programs & Camp Coordinator abozoski@lbifoundation.org
The 70th anniversary of the LBIF is a significant milestone in our mission to bring excellence in the arts and sciences to the region. This is the right time to lay the groundwork to successfully sustain it for the next 70 years.
Jillian Schratz Membership & Community Coordinator jschratz@lbifoundation.org
As President, with tremendous help from the Board and the many dedicated members, I have begun a “re-imagine” campaign to address both the major and minor needed improvements. Phase 1 included many emergency repairs! But being an art organization, visually refreshing our image was equally important. Transforming our logo to communicate who and where we are, our talented marketing team decided to use our iconic roofline to symbolize the diversity of programs offered under the LBIF “roof”. To increase our visual presence, new signage plans and banners will highlight the new and varied programs, events and classes that we offer. Thanks to our dedicated ceramics team, our Ceramics Studio has been upgraded to accommodate our growing ceramics community.

Phase 2 of our plan for next year will include addressing the building to give it a modern fresh new look as well as the much needed repairs to parts of the building. As part of our “re-imagining” of the LBIF, in July, our exhibition program will feature a landscape architecture design show. It will be the impetus to explore the possibilities of improving and making better use of the LBIF campus grounds in Phase 2. We hope to turn our grounds into a magical yet natural “garden” for all to enjoy. We kick off our “back to summer party” with the 70th Birthday Bash on July 7th with live music, dancing and a special dinner created by several local restaurants. Our new Arts and Crafts Festival in mid-July is sure to please the entire family. The Seashore House Tour in August promises to inspire all homeowners. Later in August, our annual member BBQ will coincide with the Member-Student-Faculty art exhibit opening to make two special events even better together. We hope you will join us for these refreshed old favorites as well as all of the new ones! Our membership model has been improved this year by introducing the Blai Society membership level, which enables the highest level of members’ support. In addition, we hope to succeed in our goal to expand membership and welcome newcomers with a new category of “Friends” membership; to “friend” more new members and introduce our programs to a new audience. The LBIF is an exceptional place that brings together family and friends for memorable summer times. A sincere thank you to the loyal LBIF members who have supported the Foundation over its long 70 year history, and especially to the active volunteers who so generously give of their time, energy, and resources to help make all of its potential a reality. Happy birthday LBIF! Best wishes for another wonderful 70 years! Sincerely, DeBorah Brill, LBIF Board President

LBIF HISTORY Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural facility. Dr. Blai, a student of sculptor August Rodin and founding dean of the Tyler School of Art , Temple University, envisioned a facility that would foster individuals and their talents. The LBIF has continued this vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences, and though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a year-round organization providing a place for learning, free expression, and the exchange of ideas and understanding. Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Ravono, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 he arrived in Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich...In 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. ‘Uncle Boris’ turned his studio into a workshop for the students, with classes in woodworking, clay models for casting and ceramic pieces. The teacher and students even created a fountain and a boat together.

WHO WAS BORIS BLAI? Blai’s motto was ‘We do not want any hacking from the children.’ He inspired his students with confidence, and his philosophy became ‘No one can fail.’” The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences A History: 1947 - 2014, by Julie Berkowitz

LBIF 70 YEARS AND GOING In 1948, the country was just recovering from WWII, and Dr. Boris Blai, the founding dean of the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, purchased the land in Loveladies on Long Beach Island and began construction of his vision of an artist facility. Dr. Blai brought many interesting artists to LBI to work in his studios during the hot summers until he could begin construction of the building he envisioned; a building that offered a creative space, and attract a community of individual artists bringing with them their diverse talents. Blai wished to grow a community of artists, scientists, and families who appreciated and valued cultural experiences. Marvin Levitt, one of Boris Blai’s students, an active LBIF member and artist, had this to say about Boris Blai and the early years of the LBIF:
“Artists who came to work with Dr. Blai stayed in garages or lived in Loveladies Harbor. It was as much a musicians’ retreat as an artist colony. Members of the Philadelphia orchestra and symphony would escape the city to come and stay at the beach. Since it was such a small community, everyone knew one another. Potluck dinners included the bounty of the ocean, great conversations, children running around, and occasionally a string quartet or brass quintet… they made their own entertainment back then…. LBI provided all artists an escape—a place to recharge and create.” Boris Blai passed away in 1985, leaving the LBIF as his legacy, a place to recharge, create, and to dream.

The LBIF fell on some challenging financial times during the 80’s, as it was difficult to maintain a financially viable, self-sustaining artist facility in a summer beach community. It was at this time that Ken Stein, Sandy Strine and others came to the LBIF’s aid and raised almost $1 million dollars to rebuild the dilapidated facilities. They added the tennis courts, which brought in much needed recurring revenue to support the artists community. With improved facilities, and new offerings, the LBIF had a new lease on life.
Critique in the Painters Loft
The LBIF has a rich history of artists and community. It has touched the lives of so many and continues in its mission to bring a richness of culture to the island and region. We are proud and celebrate this 70th year of the LBIF’s long and unique history. Our work is not done as we begin its next chapter of excellence, to build new dreams and imagine what is possible.

BLAI SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP
WHY IS MEMBERSHIP SO IMPORTANT?
Dear LBIF Community, This year we launched the Blai Society to commemorate the LBIF’s 70th anniversary. The Blai Society carries forward the artistic legacy and vision of the LBIF’s founder, Boris Blai, through providing financial support that ensures the Foundation’s mission will continue to impact new generations of families. The Blai Society is the highest level of annual membership we offer. It brings together a core group of likeminded supporters who share the belief that the Foundation adds unique value as the vital cultural center in the region. Each $2,500 Blai Society individual membership and business sponsorship provides critical support for the LBIF’s annual operating budget. Building a stable fiscal base to support the programs and amenities we all enjoy at the LBIF is an important first step. Looking to the future, stable finances and responsible financial stewardship will underpin the launch of a multiyear capital campaign, culminating at our 75th anniversary, that will focus on the expansion of our amenities and the permanent preservation of our grounds. Please consider joining the charter membership of the Blai Society this summer. It is my pleasure to acknowledge and personally thank each member and participating business sponsor as of this writing (mid-April, 2018): Sincerely, Todd Strine, LBIF Board President-Elect

Born in Kensington, Philadelphia to Puerto Rican parents, Lugo began his career as a graffiti artist before discovering ceramics. Lugo holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Penn State, and is an Assistant Professor in Ceramics at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. Valerie Craig has drawn and painted nearly all of her life. Known for her impressionist approach to color and light, Craig’s subject matter includes urban and rural landscapes as well as intimate still life paintings, and figures within a landscape. The man was carrying nothing; his hands clasped to a fresh bullet wound leaking blood from his belly. This was Vincent van Gogh, then a little known artist; now the most famous artist in the world. Life is fragile, especially on a barrier island. As we all know, Long Beach Island is a dynamic system, which is always changing. It is shaped by water - from ocean waves and the ebb and flow of the tidal estuary. As residents of the island, we are its guardians. In such a human-dominated landscape it is important for us to teach our children, or future, about how we impact our environment. At the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences, our work is focused on providing the tools, resources, and information for those who are interested in preserving this delicate ecosystem. To help highlight the fragility of our island and to build a deep appreciation to protect it, we created the Nature Trail. The Nature Trail allows visitors to get up close and personal encounters with our saltmarsh, Barnegat Bay, and its inhabitants.

A short walk down the Nature Trail gives visitors a glimpse into the life of ribbed mussels, mummichog, and nesting ospreys.
