FALL FASHION

trends By Jeweliana Register

Fall is upon us and we couldn’t be happier to break out our comfy sweaters and treasured boots. With the cool air surrounding us we have rounded up five fall must-try trends for your street style this season. Check out these crazes that we’re loving and discover your newest can’t-live-without items for fall and winter.

{} Dainty, Stacked Jewelry Who said layering was just for sweaters? Stack your favorite dainty necklaces in varying lengths to instantly add a cool factor to your classic denim and sweater combo. Stack simple rings on each hand and a few fun bangles to complete the layered look. You can never go wrong with a little bit of sparkle! Photo: La Soula {} Double Denim Denim on denim is back! This trend may seem a bit daunting at first, but you’ll be a master in no time. Grab your favorite jeans and fun graphic tee, pair it with booties of your choosing, and thrift an awesome distressed denim jacket. Your denims do not have to be an exact color match—in fact, you may love the look of mixed washes. The best part about this trend? No matter your age, gender or personal style, you can find a way to rock denim on denim! Photo: HM.com {} Flat Mules The return of cool weather means breaking out the beloved fall footwear. Put a twist on your classic boot and bootie line up with a pair of neutral mules that are as cool as they are comfortable. Their slip-on fit makes them the perfect match for the girl on the go, and their breezy design make them the best transitional shoe from summer to fall. Photo: neimanmarcus.com

{} Bold Plaid While plaid may not seem like a groundbreaking pattern to add to your fall wardrobe, there are unique plaid pieces that can elevate your fall fashion in the best way. Rock the Clueless look with a plaid skirt and simple sweater, or look for a fun plaid shirtdress to pair with over-the-knee boots for an effortlessly chic weekend outfit.

Get this and other fun fall graphic tees at SouthernMadeTees.com

{} Cozy Cardigans You can never go wrong with a few fall layers, and cardigans add the perfect amount of warmth to any outfit. Choose a fluffy, blanketlike cardigan for that evening bonfire or grab a lightweight, long cardigan to pair with jeans and a simple tee for an afternoon shopping. With so many styles, colors and fabrics to choose from, these are sure to make your fall wardrobe anything but boring! Photo: cabionline.com

v e i t s fefall activities f or l al Ocala Drive-In

It’s fall y’all! School’s back in session, the leaves are starting to change, and so begins the season of us Floridians clinging to whichever elements of fall we can while temperatures remain in the 80s. So, grab your favorite flannel from the back of your closet and check out one of these super fun activities to ‘pumpkin spice’ up your southern fall experience. By Isaac Myers

First United Methodist Church

Pumpkin Patch

Yes, drive-ins still exist! When these theaters hit their peak in 1958, there were 4,063 spread across the United States. Though only around 400 of them remain, the Ocala Drive-In still thrives, providing a fantastic and unique way to spend a fall evening. They offer newly release films on two large screens, and a single ticket (adults $6, children ages 6-12 $3, children ages 5 and under free) gets you into two movies, one right after the other. And don’t worry, you won’t go hungry during the double feature. The on-site snack bar is stocked with kid-friendly foods like pizza, burgers, fries, hot dogs, and of course, popcorn! Showtimes and more info can be found at ocaladrivein.info.

Everyone knows that the best fall activities are the most Instagram worthy, and no other backdrop is quite as perfect for a fall photo op than a festive pumpkin patch! The yearly pumpkin patch at the First United Methodist Church has been a signature event in the community for years and is the perfect place to grab your own plump and perfect pumpkin for carving or painting. The patch is open the entire month of October, and the daily hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. til dusk and Sunday 12 p.m. to dusk. This is a must-do fall activity!

RUN

YOUR OWN

RACE Joy H. Coleman

A half marathon is a road-running event of 13.1 miles— half the distance of a marathon. Participation in half marathons has grown steadily since 2003. With training, half marathons are achievable, and one can work up to running a full marathon. The key is preparing your body for the distance without overdoing it and causing injury. Jackie Knox, local health coach, affirms, “A lot of beginners end up falling on two ends of the training spectrum: They either commit to their half-marathon training plan too much—ignoring their bodies and escalating an injury that could have been avoided—or they don’t commit enough. When you find that sweet spot, the finish line will be in sight before you know it.”

Certified Health Coach Jackie Knox recommends, “Once you get the bug to run, there is no ceiling. When you hit one goal, it’s time to hit the next.”

Kim Delaney

Kim Delaney, registered nurse at Lake City VA Hospital, with parents James and Bonnie Palleschi. Kim knows that at 75, both parents can still run circles around her any day.

20 |

FamilyMagazine

Kim Delaney, registered nurse at the Lake City VA Hospital, has been running for over 20 years, but became serious about it roughly 10 years ago. The daughter of James and Bonnie Palleschi (now in Macclenny), she grew up watching her parents jog. Their special family Thanksgiving tradition has been to participate in the Outback Thanksgiving Run. They participate in the 6K run, get cleaned up, and head out to a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner! Kim’s approach to half marathons is that she doesn’t necessarily want to finish first—her challenge is to simply finish. Her competition is with herself. Today, her training schedule is a gym workout at least three times a week or more, if possible. She uses a home treadmill and finds training indoors helps her running performance: the treadmill forces her to go at a certain pace; while on the road, running speed and conditions vary.

“The biggest misunderstanding is when people see the word ‘race’...”

“Keep going! One foot in front of the other.”

—Jackie Knox

— LACRECIA BARBER AND HEATHER GRAY

Lacrecia and Heather have been running partners for 20 years, completing over 25 runs together.

Jackie, health coach, has also been running for over 20 years. She’d always been athletic in school, but at 13, following knee surgery, she quit for seven years. Later, while in New York City, a coworker helped her start running again. She began with 2-mile runs, then 5Ks, and gradually increased race length in a natural progression. “Training and running a half marathon is a very doable personal challenge. The training is not as intense as a marathon—it’s a completely different beast. The goal in training is to be realistic, patient, and consistent.”

“With self-discipline, all things are possible.” —Theodore Roosevelt

Jackie encourages runners, “The biggest misunderstanding is when people see the word ‘race’; there’s a disconnect, thinking ‘racing against others.’ They don’t realize there are a lot of walk-run intervals in a half marathon with the majority walking. As long as you finish within the given time—most half marathons give three and a half hours to finish—you realize you enter to compete with yourself. It’s a very personal journey for you, not anyone else. And if you do it with friends or family, then it’s extra fun, provides fellowship, and is a good way to set goals.”

22 |

FamilyMagazine

Heather Gray, vice president at TD Bank, and Lacrecia Barber, regional senior commercial loan officer at First Federal Bank, share the enthusiasm. Heather notes, “I ran in college as a way to decompress, allowing me to eat what I wanted, and it gave me time to enjoy my friends. It became my daily routine. After marrying and moving to Lake City, I met one of my best friends who’s my running and accountability partner, Lacrecia Barber.” These two best friends have been completing runs together for over 20 years, successfully participating in over 25 runs together from half marathons to community 5Ks to a full marathon. Motivation and accountability are key when it comes to training for these runs, so Heather and Lacrecia find it best to encourage each other when facing a new race challenge. Both busy professionals and mothers, they express that their training time also doubles as their quality time with each other. Their friendship pushes them to excel and enjoy the process, and these two have never finished a race without each other! Whether you are searching for a way to decompress after a long work day or you are ready for a new challenge, a half marathon may be just what you are looking for. There are so many physical health benefits to running, like strengthening your lungs, preventing high blood pressure and encouraging a healthy weight. The act of consistent exercise can also help relieve stress and encourage an overall healthier mental state. With so many benefits, what do you have to lose?

Each month, we’re bringing you and your family a festive, outdoor movie throughout the holiday season. Come capture the night within the themed photo booth, and get a chance to snap a picture with Santa when he stops by in December! We’ll have face painting, clowns, popcorn, cotton candy and more!

Let’s Get Technical

We know a movie night may seem a little daunting when you think of all the technology needed to make it a success, but have no fear—it is much simpler than you think! For a stress-free experience, simply clip a white sheet to a clothesline or strand of string lights and use a weighted object at the base to prevent the screen from blowing in the wind. If you are looking to kick it up a notch, build a wooden frame and use white fabric to create the canvas for the movie. Connect your projector to a DVD player or a laptop and play the movie from there, making sure there is not direct sunlight on the screen that could prevent your viewers from seeing the film.

Legacy of a lifetime By Jeweliana Register Holly Frazier Photography

From the founding of Morrell’s, Inc., to travelling across the U.S. in a motorhome, to capturing beautiful images of North Florida, Wayne Morrell has built an amazing legacy in his 94 years, and he is nowhere near finished dreaming yet! While many in the community know Wayne from his successful business, there is so much more to his story. Complete with a motorcycle obsession in the ‘70s and flipping homes at age 92, Wayne’s life has been anything but boring.

After retiring, Wayne and Emma Jean, “A lot of life’s lessons that I learned from his wife of 62 years, my dad were not verbally spoken but decided to purchase a lived out before me in the way he treated motorhome and spend employees, family and those that were some time touring and less fortunate. He always puts others photographing the U.S. The couple enjoyed ahead of himself.” experiencing all this —David Morrell, son nation has to offer, like beautiful New York falls and breathtaking canyons in Colorado. He joked about never being able to travel for more than two weeks at a time, because that is the longest his wife could be away from their children and grandchildren.

ayne Morrell is pictured ith his children and their spouses. e to right J.B. and Gwen Parrish, David and Vicki Morrell, Wayne Morrell, Vonada Barwick, Rhonda and Paul Mabile.

In 1964, at the age of 40, Wayne Morrell founded Morrell Salvage, Inc., a business that bought surplus, overstocked, discontinued and irregular goods and sold them at warehouse prices. As the years progressed, the business expanded its reach to sell current, first-line products for every room in the home. When Wayne retired from the business at 65 years old, his family took over and expanded the range to include textile products, furniture, flooring, cabinets, and building supplies. At this point, the company was rebranded as Morrell’s, Inc., and while the entire family has been involved with the store, Wayne’s son-in-law, Paul Mabile, is the current owner.

“We attribute a lot of his health to how active he is. He’s very projectoriented and doesn’t like to be inside. He likes to be outside. His outside projects, even at 94, often involve hard work and innovative thinking, as well as enjoyment through his hobbies like photography and fishing.” —Rhonda Mabile, daughter

All four of the girls were given these necklaces as gifts from Gwen’s daughter, Caley Porter. The necklaces feature a photo of their mother from her engagement to Wayne, a special moment the Morrell girls cherish.

Wayne’s retirement has consisted of far more than travelling the country. He has spent much of his time exploring new hobbies and developing new skills. One of the most noteworthy is his love of photography and editing for the last 37 years. At 75 years old, Wayne wanted to take his photography skills to a new level, so early one Black Friday morning, he stood in line at Walmart to purchase his very first computer. At 92, he met Trey Ratcliff, a world-famous photographer from New Zealand. He learned even more about HDR editing from Trey’s tutorials. His family jokes that he is possibly Ratcliff ’s oldest student. Beyond taking photos of his loved ones and friends, Wayne enjoys getting out into nature and capturing the beauty of North Florida. You may recognize his photos of Falling Creek, Ichetucknee Springs, and other local landmarks proudly displayed in local businesses like Peoples State Bank. It’s no secret the community loves these beautiful images that capture the essence of home. A few of the most remarkable traits Wayne possesses include his incredible work ethic, his dedicated drive to make a difference, and his innovative thinking. His family and friends gush about his giving heart and go-getter attitude, and as active and healthy as he is at almost 95 years old, we definitely want to know his secret! Though he attributes it to being blessed, Wayne has always prioritized his health and ate lots of

vegetables. He explains he loves sweet potatoes and greens, and he starts each day by enjoying a banana and almonds with his coffee. His love for gardening and fresh vegetables has coincided with his generosity, as he has planted many large gardens over the years. The past few seasons, he has planted crops and given away most of his harvest. Staying active on a daily basis is part of his secret. Wayne makes a conscious effort to walk the family property several times each week. He has been an active member at Parkview Baptist Church for over 60 years. One of his weekly routines is serving on Wednesday nights for Parkview’s family suppers. Another active part of his life is saltwater fishing from the town of Suwannee. Completely wearing out three fishing boats over the last 60 years, he has taken hundreds of family members and friends on fishing excursions. In case you’ve never spent the day with Wayne on the Gulf, waking up at 5 a.m., pursuing your limit of fish, and then cleaning them is a full day of hard work.

“I’ve really been blessed in a lot of ways to come this far with the health I’ve got. It’s just something that I give thanks for every day, and for the family that I’ve got. I’ve been blessed very much.”

Oh, and did we mention that at the age of 92, Wayne was flipping homes and turning a profit? Always looking for a project that interests him, he stumbled across a home renovation opportunity. With the help of real estate broker and family friend Teresa Brannon, he purchased, renovated, and sold four homes in one year. He was involved in the entire process from labor and updates to budget control. Turning trashed homes into treasures for his buyers was very rewarding. Each home would sell within a couple of months, and that always motivated him to buy another home. After four projects, he decided to retire from flipping homes due to market changes and missed fishing opportunities. With so many amazing accolades, it is no secret Wayne Morrell has built a life that he loves. His passion shines through in all he does, whether that is taking spectacular photos of local landmarks, making an old home like new again, or simply spending quality time fishing with his family. This man has left his mark in the hearts of many over the years through his faith, character, hardworking spirit and entrepreneurial thinking.

—Wayne Morrell Have we said yet that Wayne is incredibly tech-savvy? Not only does he take photographs on his Sony camera and edit them himself on his computer, but he is also a master of the iPhone. His family gifted him with his first smartphone about five years ago, and they joke about a precious memory from a recent church service. When the pastor began to preach and asked for the congregation to turn to scripture, Wayne pulled out his iPhone and opened up the YouVersion Bible app! He not only uses his phone for the verse of the day to supplement his other devotionals, but also to check the weather forecast for fishing. A fan of metal detecting, his grandchildren taught him to look up his antique finds on the internet to determine their value. Needless to say, he has seen the world change drastically from his World War II days, from plowing with horses and mules to mastering digital cameras, marine GPSs, and iPhones.

“I believe my dad’s temperament and emotional state has a lot to do with his good health. He has a quiet and gentle spirit and is always gracious toward people and life. In fact, in all my years, I can only remember his raising his voice a couple of times, and that was when Vonada and I were teenagers in the 70s and wanted to wear bikinis and short skirts like our friends. That issue caused his temper to flare, but overall, he handles life with wisdom and grace. Very little ruffles him.” —Gwen Parrish, daughter

MODERN-DAY A common

misconception is that art is limited to paint brushes and sketch pads, but in actuality it encompasses so much more. Artisans—those who create jewelry, furniture, metal sculptures, ironwork or glasswork—could, and should, be seen as artists who design extraordinary works that don’t necessarily fall under the cookiecutter perception of what art is. Though everyone has their own interpretation of what defines art, there

is an art in craft. From twisting iron into hooks, bending copper into detailed images, turning wood into furniture or blowing glass into a show-stopping centerpiece, here is a look at some local artisans who excel in their craft and generate one-of-a-kind works of art.

FROM IRONWORK TO ARTWORK Standing over a blazing fire inside what’s called a forge, John Lacefield uses the smoldering embers to heat up a rod of iron—a mandatory step in the art of blacksmithing. After several seconds submerged in the flames, the rod turns from jet black to red, yellow and orange—lighting up the darkness of the room like a red-hot flashlight. In order to transform the rod, Lacefield strikes the glowing surface with a hammer, sending sparks into the air. After a few seconds, the piece of iron starts losing its bright color, which means it’s back to the forge for reheating until the rod is hot enough to bend and shape again with applied force. A constant pattern of reheating and using tools to reshape the iron is repeated until the desired outcome is achieved. It’s a long process that yields beautiful results. Though blacksmiths like Lacefield usually create things that are functional, the line between function and art seem to meld closer together with each piece he designs. “I like to do functional things that can be used, and traditionally that’s what blacksmiths did... Traditionally they were functional kind of artists or craftspeople. Now there is a lot of artistry in blacksmithing. I do some artwork, but I’m not an artist, so it makes it harder,” he says. Lacefield became interested in blacksmithing and ironwork back in 2000, and over the years he’s made items like hooks, rain gauges, hinges, key rings, and even jewelry—He has shaped recycled bed springs into hearts and tied on leather straps to make necklaces. You can find a lot of his work inside the gift shop of the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park, where he also performs demonstrations of his craft. Of course, blacksmithing is more of a hobby for him, especially since he broke his elbow four years ago, which makes it far more difficult to hit and bend the iron. Despite the injury, he continues learning new techniques; teaching aspiring blacksmiths, which is easy since he previously taught industrial education; and honing in on his craft, even if it doesn’t always turn out how he planned. “You can take a mistake and make it into something beautiful because nobody knows what you were doing to begin with,” he says. “The beauty of metal working or blacksmithing is you can heat it up and change it again.” For any inquiries regarding Lacefield’s work, send him a message at lacefieldfarms@aol.com.

STITCH OR STEEL: CREATING ART IN UNUSUAL WAYS Some artists flourish in a specific field while others branch out and experiment to add more tools and techniques to their repertoire. Then there are those who take it even farther and delve into multiple forms or styles of art from sculpting with copper to portraying a lifelike scene with fabric. Their interests are scattered throughout the artistry spectrum. This is the category that Ann Opgenorth thrives in—creating works of art through welding, painting, and sewing. After earning her bachelor’s degree, Opgenorth received her Master of Fine Arts at Notre Dame, where she was versed in multiple art styles and developed a love for welding, which for her is the easiest way to turn her ideas into a reality because she sees her designs in a three-dimensional way. In 1964, she and her business partner, Donna Marihart, opened

34 |

FamilyMagazine

Ivy Ridge Studio in Iowa. After 25 years, the talented duo moved their business to Florida, where they would showcase their artwork for another 15 years until Marihart passed away. Of course, their partnership would always be memorialized through their work that’s featured around town. One of their biggest commissions is the towering copper statue of Jesus Christ hanging from a cross inside Epiphany Catholic Church. A sculpture with a similar style is the three howling wolves at Florida Gateway College, completed after Opgenorth became the sole proprietor of Ivy Ridge. Both pieces are finished with patina, which is a thin layer that forms on top of copper and other metals either naturally or by adding various chemicals to create a blue-green tarnish.

Over the years, welding has become more of a challenge for Opgenorth due to her arthritic hands, but at 76, she can still design pieces that people half her age wouldn’t even attempt. Her most recent piece is a copper angel measuring an impressive 6 feet, 8 inches, including its wings. When she isn’t mixing chemicals, bending steel, or painting birds, which are her favorite subject, Opgenorth transfers her talent into quilting. Each quilt she makes measures 8 feet by 9 feet and takes approximately one year to complete. She starts the process on the ground by using paper and the floor tiles as her guide. After sketching the layout, she cuts out hundreds of fabric shapes to create a scene that looks as seamless as a photograph. Her past work includes images of horses, birds and deer, but her most recent project features panthers splashing in a puddle inside a jungle. Though it’s a time-consuming venture, Opgenorth and other artists have to eventually part with their work to create space for a new endeavor. “The joy of it is making it, and once it’s made, it needs to move along so that you’ve got space to do something else,” she says. COMBINING FUNCTION WITH ART With a background in operations management, Paul Boartfield wasn’t initially equipped with the skills of a woodworker. However, like with any hobby, through the combination of various techniques, practice and imagination, he has become an experienced artisan, whittling lumber for the past 12 years. After joining a woodworking club, Boartfield made a few furniture items to enter in a contest. Although it was his first time showcasing his work, he won first place on a wooden stool and second place on a desk and chair combination he had built. Some of the other furniture he’s made over the years includes TV stands, tables, baker’s racks and a chest of drawers. Though making furniture is his favorite woodworking activity (so much that he has no more room in his house to fit his creations), each piece of furniture takes him roughly 50 hours to complete. With a full-time job, making furniture isn’t always at the top of his to-do list. Instead, he mostly uses his skills to design cutting boards to sell through Fifth Generation Farms. During the holiday season, he typically sells a couple hundred cutting boards. Despite making so many, each one is unique. Developing his craft as a hobby rather than a business, Boartfield has the creative freedom to design pieces any way he wants, beginning each project with a rough plan, but having the flexibility to change the style as he goes along, balancing both function and art. While he still considers woodworking a hobby, he imagines one day it will become a full-time endeavor after he retires.

Joshua Dennard Ann’s Arbor located on the grounds of the Lake City Woman’s Club

Jesse Cullum and Joshua Dennard

MULTIPLE TECHNIQUES: INFINITE POSSIBILITIES Hanging from the ceiling of Halpatter Brewing Company is a spherical chandelier profuse with hand-blown yellow and green speckled glass thorns, embellished with fire-enginered swirls, finished off with welded iron leaves stretching out from the sides, leaving all who encounter it in complete awe. Designed by Joshua Dennard, the founder of Dennard Craftworks, this particular piece encompasses just a fraction of the different types of materials Dennard uses to create unique and functional craftwork for his customers. Dennard became interested in glassblowing in his early 20s, with a particular admiration for the work of Dale Chihuly, a famous glassblower revered for creating a style that arranges glass-blown rods, swirls and other shapes in a clustered, yet intricate way. “It’s like a dance when you’re blowing glass because your whole body has to be in tune with your movements and where you’re going, and you have to pay attention to gravity...and heat and expansion and all of these different variables that you have to deal with in glass blowing,” Dennard says. The process of glassblowing involves taking long, hollow blow rods and heating them to around 2,100 degrees, dipping them into chunks of glass while continuously turning the rod, and reheating the glass in order to stretch it and work it until the desired look and shape is achieved. Dennard compares it to using an old-school honey dipper (like the ones shown in Cheerios commercials). He dips and swirls the rod in the glass with the intent of keeping the glasswork on the rod instead of allowing it to fall on the

floor. Glassblowers can buy pre-colored glass chunks to work with or, like Dennard, they can start with a clear base, heat it, and then roll it onto tiny bits of colored glass until the two fuse together. Glassblowing, though the most difficult, exciting, and certainly colorful, is only just one of the techniques Dennard uses in his creations. In fact, right down the hall from the chandelier in Halpatter is another of Dennard’s designs: an 80- to 120-pound steel tree suspended from the ceiling, which captures onlookers with its contorted, textured branches wrapped inside twinkling lights. Down the street by the Woman’s Club of Lake City is Ann’s Arbor, an archway dedicated in memory of Ann Darby. The memorial combines Dennard’s masonry work at the base and intricate ironwork featuring vines and dozens of small leaves weaving their way from one side to the other. From steel, aluminum and iron, to bricks, stonework and glass, there aren’t many materials Dennard does not use in order to create something that’s one of a kind and showstopping. “I know that painters can paint beautiful pictures with details using just paint, and that I will never be able to achieve that level of creativity, but for a simple guy like me who’s good with his hands to be able to make a living in the art world from doing something like glassblowing, or glassmaking, or even really artistic masonry work... It’s not just metalwork and ironwork and glasswork, it’s all craft,” Dennard expresses. To see more of Dennard’s work, be sure to check out his website at dennardcraftworks.com.

Revitalizing Downtown By Jeweliana Register

With a passion for seeing the area updated and upgraded, James Buchanan and his family have been making strides to revitalize our beloved downtown Lake City. Starting a few years ago with the purchase of a space for his first business in town, Treasures, James began his journey to restore this historic area. With the help of his family, this team has been able to “bring back the block” and completely remodel each piece of property they have purchased.

A restoration project is no easy feat, but James and his family gladly took on the challenge and continue to take on new challenges as they see opportunities downtown. The most recent venture is the purchase of Keaton Locksmith’s building, a project James is very excited to begin working on. The building features about 5,000 square feet of space, complete with a residential area upstairs, so it will be perfect for the next commercial business venture—though we will have to wait and see what exactly it will be. Don’t worry, Keaton will only be moving a few doors down to one of James’s previously renovated spaces, so they will not be leaving downtown. James attributes his revitalization journey to simply being at the right place at the right time, but his family was undoubtedly right for the job. Not only do they have a passion for making the old like new again, but they also have the experience to get the job done. “It was almost a happy accident, but we were the right

people to come in because every single one of us has some sort of contracting background,” James explains. “I’m a retired electrical contractor; my son-in-law has an AC background; my employee Marcus is a dry wall expert and painter; my other sons came in and laid the flooring. We do all the work ourselves; everything has been done by the family. That’s probably how we have been able to afford to do it, by doing all the work ourselves.” With their incredible work ethic and clear vision for each project, this family is striving to bring a modern touch to downtown while still preserving its historic character. The spaces are receiving a facelift, but the integrity is remaining intact.

Restoration of this North Marion block is progressing beautifully. Keaton Locksmith will soon be the fifth building to be renovated by James Buchanan. When fully completed, the upstairs will house two apartments. The downstairs will continue to be commercial space.

“Our goal is to modernize. We try to keep the traditional look and feel of downtown, but it is time to modernize. It’s time to upgrade the buildings… I’m an Orlando transplant; I watched the city go from pea-sized to gigantic in the seventies,” James says. “So, I watched that grow, and I see the potential here as well. It needs exactly what is happening.” James has been a catalyst who advocates for the modernization of downtown, and he expresses how much he loves the spaces that are popping up. With businesses like Marion Street, Halpatter and Sal’s choosing to plant roots downtown, the area is beginning to draw locals and out-of-town visitors.

We have a feeling this will not be the last of new businesses popping up downtown.

Alexa Johns caught the travel bug early in life, taking her first trek abroad with her grandmother to Paris when she was 9 years old. When she was 15, Alexa joined a mission trip with her church to Honduras, and since then has enlisted her time in El Salvador, Guatemala and soon Uganda. In her professional life, Alexa paired her affection for sightseeing with the desire to help those in need and became a traveling nurse, so far practicing in Panama City and Seattle. Despite traveling for work and through volunteering efforts, Alexa has a wanderlust personality that never rests. Her latest overseas adventure involved setting aside five weeks to backpack across Europe—seeking out British royalty in England, devouring sweet pastries in France, taking in the local culture in Belgium, admiring the colorful buildings in Spain, and uncovering ancient ruins beneath Italy were just another set of checkmarks on her ever-expanding travel bucket list.

Alexa and her friend-turned-travel-companion, Kayla, began their journey in England. “We had lists of things that we wanted to do in every place, but not in a certain order because we wanted to be flexible; we wanted to be able to kind of go with the flow,” Alexa says. Finding the Royal family’s schedule online, they spent their first day in England getting a glimpse of Prince William, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Westminster Abbey before the widelypublicized Royal Wedding. They followed the excitement with a stroll through the British Museum and the National Gallery. Over the next few days, their itinerary consisted of enjoying an authentic formal tea with clotted cream-covered scones, watching the changing of the guards, stopping to smell the flowers at Kensington Gardens, discovering Boxpark—a shopping center made entirely out of repurposed shipping

containers, traveling to the top of The Shard, and riding a train to Windsor Castle. Taking a short break from the usual tourist destinations, Alexa fastened on her oven mitts and took a donut-making course at Bread Ahead Bakery to get a taste of the local cuisine. Well, the powdery, custard-filled part. As far as sleeping arrangements were concerned, the duo spent each night how most backpackers on a budget do: by staying in hostels. They stayed at St. Christopher’s, a chain of hostels that provide separate sleeping pods and the ability to have an all-girls room.

France Eventually it was time to leave London behind and head to Paris, which would be used as a central hub for the rest of their destinations. Over the course of their stay, the pair took

in the lush scenery with walks along Luxembourg Gardens, Jardin des plantes de Nantes, and the glistening water leading toward the Eiffel Tower. Other must-see spots included the renowned Moulin Rouge, the Arc de Triomphe, seeing the Mona Lisa and Napoleon III Apartments at the Louvre, and exploring Fontainebleau. Alexa encourages anyone taking a trip to France to follow in her footsteps and board a train to Versailles to see the palace that Marie Antoinette called home, which combines architectural beauty with French history. Amalfi Coast, Italy The Colosseum, Rome, Italy

Of course, no trip to France is complete without trying some mouthwatering French delicacies like vibrant macarons or sweet crêpes. One of Alexa’s Instagramworthy foodie stops was the bright pink restaurant La Maison Rose where Alexa and her friend sipped on peach spritzers and overlooked Montmartre, home of the basilica Sacré-Cœur.

Belgium Park Güell, Barcelona, Spain

Venice, Italy

After a few days in France, Alexa took a bus to Antwerp where she met up with another friend who would double as her local tour guide. She took Alexa and Kayla to a decadent chocolate shop, a market, and a summer concert.

Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, Belgium

After Belgium, it was back to France for a few more days before heading to Barcelona. Although limited planning worked for the first half of their voyage, the attractions in Barcelona filled up far in advance, which meant they would miss out on popular places like the Sagrada Família. Luckily, they were able to secure tickets for the gingerbread wonderland and colorful mosaic structures that reside within Park Güell, which, like the Sagrada Família, was designed by the imaginative architect Antoni Gaudí. They spent the rest of their Barcelona excursion sampling tapas along the Mediterranean Sea before heading back once again to France.

Italy

Venice, Italy

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France Kensington Palace, London, England

The final stop on their five-week globe trot was Italy. During their Italian getaway, they got lost in Venice, enjoyed music on the streets of Florence, smelt the salty water off the Amalfi Coast, and stepped along the ruins of Pompeii. To cool off from the hot summer days, they took a dip in the crystal clear blue lagoon in Capri. Italy was rounded off with a stop in Rome, which was both tourist-friendly and easily walkable. The city’s highlights included a visit to the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica inside Vatican City, and snacking on a scoop or two of gelato.

While this trip allowed Alexa to cross off several locations from her bucket list, for every item she scratches out, she finds another handful of places to add, which, for Alexa, means the adventure will never end. Fall 2018 | 45

ORTHODONTICS & MARTIN KIDS DENTAL’S NEW OFFICE Where Healthy, Happy Smiles are a Priority!

You know it has gone from ‘great to outstanding’ when the welcoming signage outside is a 20-foot sculpture of underwater eel grass—the kind of grass that lines the bottom of the Ichetucknee River. Playing in this grass is a friendly manatee, alligator and their friends. Welcome to the new home of Martin Orthodontics and Martin Kids Dental. Walking into this 6,000-square-foot building is astonishing! Nothing short of extraordinary can be said. Celia S. Martin, D.M.D., and her team left no detail to chance when, after 25 years of practicing at the same location, it was time for a larger building. The planning ensued, and 46 |

after almost three years, the dream became reality. When entering the front office, it is akin to entering a Disney vignette, except this one is filled with critters at home here in North Florida. These life-sized figures are on the

walls, hanging from the ceiling, and—most importantly—at eyelevel for children. Vibrant color is everywhere, attracting children’s eyes to the motion being displayed: an otter and raccoon mischievously work together; manatees lazily float about, looking so sweet; and turtles,

Look closely, and you will find Dr. Celia’s four-legged fur babies, Zippa and Zhoe, amongst this menagerie. Six themed wall-mounted games change regularly, clearly making this an upscale playhouse! Stunning artwork continues into the patient’s dental section where Matt Walker, D.M.D., practices dentistry for infants, children and adolescents. The brush-up area, quiet area, and technical state-of-the-art exam rooms are themed with bees, bears, manatees, owls, and alligators. The spectacular, lively themed environment fascinates and comforts patients while Dr. Walker gently meets their dental needs.

Preparing for Medicare Annual Open Enrollment October 15th – December 7th By Gwen Parrish

Get to know Gwen Parrish Local to Lake City, Gwen Parrish has a passion for helping Medicare members in her community with all their healthcare needs. Gwen is a licensed insurance agent for the State of Florida, specializing in Medicare plans. She began her new career in 2012 and works as an independent agent

representing multiple carriers for her local and surrounding counties. “Medicare is complicated and confusing with all the moving parts, plans, enrollment periods and penalties. What sets me apart from other agents is offering a brief tutorial in understanding basic Medicare before going into plan options. With this knowledge, members can make more informed decisions.” “It’s very rewarding helping seniors. Many times we can help get their Part B premium paid, which puts another $1608 in their pocket each year. Also, helping them reduce their prescription drugs cost and reduce co-pays, is a game changer. It’s very rewarding when we can win together.”

As a Medicare specialist, Gwen helps to inform, teach, compare products, and shop for the best plan for each individual. Her consultations are free, and she is compensated by the insurance carriers she represents. She stays updated on all the local doctor networks and preferences, and she is available to church groups or senior groups for educational seminars. When she is not serving seniors, she enjoys spending time with her best friend and husband of 42 years, J.B. She also treasures her Gigi duties with her four “perfect” grandchildren who belong to their “almost-perfect” parents, Caley and Jay, Clay, Mandy and Colton.

Cancer By Susan K. Lamb

“God graciously answered prayers and saved my life.” —Sue Lamb Cancer. The mere word makes most people shudder. But—like life as an adult—if you are diagnosed with it, you soon begin to understand it’s just another word. It’s all about how you deal with it when you are its victim that really makes the word change from CANCER! to cancer. Cancer is mean and ugly. It’s debilitating, taking away your freedom sometimes, your hair, your strength and, in some cases, your life. With modern medicine, there are volumes of treatments to save lives and get you back on the road of life quickly. But in the 10 years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer, there have been almost unbelievable ways found to treat and cure cancer. I almost lost my life to cancer. When it was found, I was not notified. But God kept tapping me on the shoulder in my busy life saying call and check on that mammogram, over and over. Three months after the test, I called and heard a gasp from the person on the phone. I knew instantly my life had just changed. Thanks to Mayo Clinic, which accepted me almost instantly, I was cared for by excellent physicians after I told them my situation. That is when my life as I knew it changed forever.

The

Voice By Ruth Williams

Pastor Isadore Williams Man of God. Minister. Gifted. Statesman. Broadcaster.

The Voice of Columbia High School Football

When Pastor Isadore Williams speaks, his voice carries more than melodious, booming words. What resonates most is how his words are tempered with an inviting, warm spirit with each hello or casual conversation. For 44 years, Williams has simultaneously recorded athletic game play-by-play on radio as the Columbia High School Tigers football announcer, and is legendary for calling his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman, Wildcats’ games, “revered for his traditional opening line, Who Will Ascend to the Top of the Mountain.” Pastor Williams started calling basketball games as a Richardson High School student in 1960. Speaking sparingly of his gift, “I just had it in me, I could do broadcasting,” he says. During his senior year at Bethune-Cookman (BC-U) in 1964, knowing Roscoe Camp, the information director, he raised his sight on being the press announcer in the press box at BC-U, recalling, “I was asked to say, ‘ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the national anthem...’ and the rest is history.” After graduating, he later became the first black medical technician in pulmonary research at the VA hospital in Lake City. During his tenure, an opportunity to attend the University of Florida to be trained as a licensed entomologist resulted in working for the U.S. Forestry Service while Pastor Williams with wife Betty. They have still calling games on the two sons: Harold Williams, 45, and Darold weekends.

As an announcer, he looks forward to listening to other broadcasters, and says he takes notes when an announcer, “is out of line or not making a call accordingly.” Donnie Harrison, former principal of CHS and partner with Williams for eight years calling Tiger football games, agrees that Pastor Williams has an enthusiastic approach to announcing games. “He’s a first class individual, genuine, cares about the game and how the game should always be called correctly,” Harrison said. Their ties go beyond their partnership as announcers together, though. Harrison acknowledges Williams marrying him and his wife, and both families love and revere each other sincerely to this day. Because of his commitment and longevity calling games, in 2016 the Tiger’s press box was named after him. Bestowed upon him the same year was an induction in the hall of fame at Bethune-Cookman University! Columbia High School’s principal Trey Hosford says, “I cannot think of Tiger Football without thinking of Isadore Williams. I was very fortunate to grow up listening to him on Friday nights and then to be able to work beside him in the booth for five years. I don’t know anyone who loves CHS Football more than him.” Williams amusingly admits among broadcasters, “When the home team scores a first down or touchdown, the tone is loud and announced with emphasis: “BETHUNE-COOKMAN, FIRST DOWN!” Whereas the opposing team announcement has little emphasis placed on it, and is blunt and short: “FAMU, first down.” For the college football classic games, Williams calls the games for “He’s a first class the odd years and FAMU individual. Genuine; cares announcer calls during even years. about the game and how Pastor Williams is always the game should always eager to share God’s revelations and is most proud be called correctly.” and blessed to have his wife ~ Donnie Harrison Betty by his side, as well as his two sons, Harold Williams, 45, and Darold Williams, 40, and their grandsons. In spite of the accolades he and his wife deservingly receive, his primary devotion, passion and love is being minister of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Lake City for 32 years, with his lovely wife Betty serving as the first lady. “We love ourselves some Philadelphia members, and they continuously surround us with love,” Minister Williams extoled. Pastor Dwight Polluck, Minister of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, knowing Pastor Williams for 40 years, says that “he’s an honorable man, friend, and father figure who ordained him in 1993 as minister and respects him as a beloved spiritual mentor.”

Sister Yolanda Carlisle says it best, “Pastor Williams is a community minister. This community has been blessed with his unselfishness and support through his gifts and ministry; and he continues to raise the bar for all of us.”

GLOBAL INNOVATION

LAKE CITY BUSINESS GOES GLOBAL By Jeweliana Register

White sand beaches, crystal blue waters and cloudless skies—now that’s the kind of work environment we could get used to! It is the dream of many to call beautiful beaches across the world their office, and the Global Innovations family can do just that. While it’s definitely some hard work and not all play, they can’t complain about having to visit the beautiful destinations of the customers who purchase their premium thatch roofing. With their first thatch products patented in the 90s by Barry Huber, Global Innovations has taken the thatched roofing

business by storm, all from their home base of Lake City. The story of this company originates back to 1996, the year when Disney World began building Animal Kingdom. The designers of the park, Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), were planning to use natural thatched roofing to help create the desired atmosphere of the park, but since that was a fire hazard, the fire marshal denied the request, insisting it must be a fireproof thatch. Many different companies then submitted their ideas for a fireproof synthetic thatch for the project in an effort to win the business. With a long background in custom specialty roofing, Barry and his son Abram brought out the fireproof patented product Endureed. WDI fell in love with it, and Global Innovations won the bid to provide their custom synthetic thatch. Disney was lined up to be their first client, until in 1997, Richard Branson’s island was hit by a devastating hurricane,

destroying his natural thatched roofs. Barry pitched his new product to Richard, and Endureed quickly had another client who would actually be ready for product ahead of Disney. With his first two clients being such important figures and customers, it’s no surprise word of this attractive, fireproof and hurricane-proof synthetic thatch spread quickly, and the rest of the story of this local manufacturing company began to unfold.

It all started with a challenge: create a roofing system that would deliver the beauty and wonder of natural thatched roof, durability of a commercial-grade building product, capable of surviving hurricane force winds. — Endureed.com Koro Sun Resort, Fiji

As the company approaches its 20-year mark, Global Innovations has come a long way with Endureed products since their journey began. Not only have they expanded the product line and extended the family of employees, but they have revolutionized the way thatch structures are manufactured. Their products are made right here in Lake City and are shipped Capetown out all over the world. Some of the destinations for these thatched roofs include Hawaii, Mexico, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Maldives, United Kingdom, and Fiji. Their market now goes beyond theme parks and celebrity islands, expanding to hotels, resorts, restaurants and high-end residential properties. The company has plans to expand the residential market in the future, so keep your eyes open for an opportunity to utilize this weather-proof thatch on your own tiki hut or beach getaway. We are confident the sky is the limit with this company!

SOLAR ENERGY

and its impact on Columbia, Suwannee and Hamilton Counties By Joy H. Coleman

Currently, Columbia, Suwannee and Hamilton Counties are building solar energy farms. Duke Energy and Florida Power & Light’s solar investments are impacting our region’s economy and contributing to a healthier environment. Here is what’s going on and the impact we can expect in our area. Hamilton County: The Hamilton Solar Power Plant, built by Duke Energy, will be 74.9 megawatts in size, consisting of approximately 300,000 solar panels on 565 acres. This provides a clean and reliable fuel source. Duke Energy’s solar panel field will power approximately 20,000 homes upon completion, changing how energy is produced and consumed in Hamilton and surrounding areas. “Together, the Hamilton and Columbia solar power plants are expected to eliminate approximately 645 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in Florida each year upon commercial operation. That’s the equivalent of taking 63,000 passenger cars off the road,” says Catherine Stempien, Duke Energy Florida president. Duke Energy has identified 753 acres in Jennings that will be included in their Site Readiness Program also. More information on this comprehensive program can be found at news.duke-energy.com. Karen Williams, Executive Director of the Hamilton County Chamber of Commerce shares, “We’re going green! The presence of solar power panel fields in Hamilton County enables us to earn the ‘green’ label. Environmental awareness and responsibility is not only reflected by a reduction of pollution, but also by an excellent marketing and public relations tool for our businesses. An environmentally cognizant image generates positive feedback from customers.”

Suwanee County: Suwannee County and Florida Power & Light will start construction on an 800-acre property alongside Interstate 10 in the northeastern section of the county. FPL’s newest facility is scheduled to go into operation in 2020 and is expected to produce 74.5 megawatts of energy. FPL spokesman Stephen Heiman writes, “This will save customers hundreds of millions of dollars in fuel costs, and the facility will produce enough energy to power 15,000 homes.” One unique aspect of the Suwannee solar farm is the use of a tracker system instead of fixed panels. The tracker system allows the panels to move east to west throughout the day, following the sun and increasing energy produced while reducing the impact on wetlands or sensitive areas. Columbia County: In Columbia County, the FPL Sunshine Gateway Solar Energy Center is expected to be completed by 2019. The progress can be seen from Interstates 75 and 10. The 74.5-megawatt solar power plant will generate enough energy to power nearly 15,000 homes. It will prevent emissions equivalent to removing 12,000 cars from the road each year. FPL is rapidly expanding their solar power resources. In fact, they are in the midst of one of the largest solar expansions ever in the U.S., with more than 3.5 million new solar panels added in the last two years alone. FPL spokesman Stephen Heiman continues, “In addition, FPL has found a way to build cost-effective solar plants, meaning no net cost to customers after savings from fuel and other generation-related expenses. The eight new solar power plants that opened this year are projected to save FPL customers more than $100 million over time.”

While the acts have changed during the course of the past 59 years, the focus behind Community Concerts of Lake City’s live artist series remains the same: to bring entertainment and culture to the residents of Columbia County at an affordable price. The upcoming 2018-19 season kicked off October 6 with a performance of “Liverpool Live,” a Beatles tribute show, marking the beginning of the concert series’ 60th anniversary of continuous operation in Lake City. The series annually brings a diverse group of musical acts to the area. This year’s season boasts a beloved Christmas classic ballet; a group of preeminent African American musicians playing chamber music; a husband, wife and kids ensemble doing 50s & 60s oldies; an extraordinary pianist of only 17 years; and a “full-blown” wind symphony. Dodie Pedlow, who was on the original Board of Directors for the first season of Community Concerts, says the idea was initially part of a Newcomers Club. One of the founding members, Madge VanArsdale, decided Lake City needed more culture and developed the idea for local concerts. Community Concerts is an all-volunteer nonY CELEBRATING profit corporation. Financial support is provided by those who buy either single years tickets or season 1958 membership tickets at various support levels. Also, some 70 businesses buy ads in the program jacket. From time to time, someone provides special support. This year, James Montgomery is sponsoring the Nutcracker Ballet. The final concert is sponsored by a grant from the Robert and Elizabeth (Betty) Haven Fund.

The response from music representatives was surprising: numerous groups wanted to meet with Community Concerts of Lake City’s Board of Directors, which at the time, didn’t exist.

60 T H A N N I V E R S A R Y SEASON SCHEDULE THE NUTCRACKER BALLET SATURDAY, DEC 1 • 2:00 PM THE RITZ CHAMBER PLAYERS FRIDAY, JAN 18 • 7:30 PM TOMMY, JO, AND THE KIDS SATURDAY, MAR 16 • 7:30 PM ETHAN BORTNICK FRIDAY, APR 5 • 7:30 PM FIRST COAST WIND SYMPHONY SATURDAY, MAY 4 • 7:30 PM Pedlow was one of the first asked to join the board and was an integral part of the group for many years. Back then, Pedlow said the board relied on a representative of Columbia Artists to pick acts which he or she believed would be successful in the area. This later evolved into the board members’ picking from a list to what it is today. Members of the board audition a number of acts at annual showcases in Nashville and South Florida to choose the acts for the upcoming season. Concerts are presented at the Levy Performing Arts Center on the campus of Florida Gateway College. The FGC arts center is named after Dr. Alfonso Levy, an early board member who eventually became known as “Mr. Music.” As the years passed, organizers began to discover they could attract some big-name performers, not just those at the beginning

or end of their careers. A number of wellknown acts have appeared during the years: Artie Shaw, Fred Waring, Ferrante & Teicher, the New Christie Minstrels, John Davidson, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra are just a few. Top quality performers are still attracted to Lake City today. “Performers tell us they love performing in Lake City,” says Past President David Murdock.” We always do our best to make them feel at home.” Organizers who have been with Community Concerts for a number of years—Barbara Ann Carpenter, Bonita Hadwin, Lorraine Kirkland, Sue Tuell, Bill & Linda Poplin, and Emeritus Director Catherine O’Steen—all tell stories about experiences during their time with the concert series, whether it was ironing clothes for a performer, playing a round of golf with a musician, treating an entertainer to dinner, or helping a singer who tumbled off the stage. Organizers try to keep up with the times, one of the reasons the series has expanded from its once classical oriented showcase. While at least one classical show is always included on the annual performance list, organizers have extended the playlist to reach a larger audience, especially families. Community Concerts makes a special effort to acquaint young people with the arts by offering one or more free noon-time “outreach” concerts.

Season tickets are currently available at the Lake City Chamber of Commerce or communityconcerts.info. Answering FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES OUTDOORS

By Jeweliana Register

THE CALL

A pastor and former coach, Skipper Hair has answered the call to ministry in a unique and powerful way. Combining his love for the outdoors, his passion for sports, and his fire for Christ, Skipper has begun a journey to minister and disciple young people in our community for God’s glory. He expressed it’s been a long road to get here, but he couldn’t be more excited about the future of FCA Outdoors. 82 |

FamilyMagazine

What is FCA? Formed in 1954 by Don McClanen, Fellowship of Christian Athletes was built upon the idea that if athletes could endorse items like shaving creams and supplements, then they could also endorse the Lord. With Christ at the center, the organization began bringing together athletes to support each other in their faith and their athletic pursuits. In over 17,000 certified FCA huddles in the world, students are impacting their campuses and communities in big ways for Christ. What started as an idea pitched to 19 athletes in 1954 has spiraled into an organization that spreads across 62 countries and impacts hundreds of thousands of students each year.

Accompanied by his father and brotherin-law, Skipper began taking canoe trips down the Suwannee River in 2001. Flash forward to July of 2008, when Skipper was baptized and born again. From this point on, those river trips began to change. Skipper had the idea to take his brothers-in-Christ to the river and make their ministry trips a regular occurrence, vowing to cover the whole river in a few years. Little did he know that in 2018, he would be taking groups of high school students—both athletes and nonathletes—down the river on retreats and sharing about Jesus. After feeling a pressing on his heart to grow this river ministry, Skipper was put into contact with the FCA Outdoors division leader in Tallahassee. Not only was the leader extremely excited to hear about Skipper’s vision and heart for service, but he expressed to Skipper that he had spent the last two years praying for God to send someone just like him his way. Skipper then began to pioneer the FCA Outdoor ministry in North Florida,

Skipper Hair with wife Crystal, daughters Linzie and Gracie, and son Fisher.

and the story continues to unfold today. It’s no secret that athletes have impact. Not only do they have a large network of teammates, but they also have so much talent and potential living inside of them. For many of these student athletes, their coaches are the most influential people in their lives, and their impact is immeasurable. FCA recognizes the influence these coaches have over their players and how a simple act of service can change the course of their lives forever. While this ministry is a daily walk on campuses across our area, Skipper’s ministry comes full circle in his specialty: taking teams on weekend trips to the river for bonding retreats. He and his volunteers spend 72 hours pouring into the lives of these young people, whether that is baptizing them in the river, sharing their testimonies of faith,

or simply showing them how loved they are by Jesus. These weekends consist of coaches sharing their heart, teammates serving each other, and strangers becoming friends. The ministry that happens is something these boys and girls will never forget. Skipper’s passion for Jesus and his heart to invest in young people shines bright in FCA Outdoors. The vision of the ministry is to get back to the basics, even if just for a weekend, to take a breather and connect with the Lord in a powerful way. This ministry is seeing amazing testimonies from their obedience and willingness to let God reveal himself to them, and it is only just the beginning of this wonderful adventure.

GET INVOLVED Interested in supporting this organization? FCA Outdoors is currently accepting donations of new or used canoes, paddles, life jackets, hammocks, bug nets and four-person tents. If you are looking to partner in prayer, volunteer your time, or support this local FCA ministry financially, contact Skipper Hair at 386-365-7377 or shair@fca.org, or visit my.fca.org/ skipperhair.

Expanding to better serve our veterans

Lake City VA Hospital By Jeweliana Register

During the inaugural walk-through of the new VA Lake City Primary Care Clinic, Family Magazine had the pleasure of touring the facility alongside state representatives who voiced their support of the project.

“The residence of this makes it a lot easier for the veterans to be seen. They don’t have a hospital type setting; they can come in here, and it is very convenient. They can roll right in and get seen by multiple specialists for their treatments and medical advice. It’s a much more streamlined process; the staff seems very happy, and it’s very efficient.”

DID YOU KNOW? Florida has one of the highest percentage rates of veteran residents in the country. 86 |

This October, the Lake City VA Medical Center is expanding its reach with a new branch location: The VA Lake City Primary Care Clinic, located on Commerce Drive is the first of its kind to be opened in Florida and will offer veterans ease of access and a streamlined process for receiving medical treatment.

VA Primary Care Clinic on Walk-Through Day. Clinic is located on Commerce Drive in the plaza just past Cracker Barrel.

Being the gateway to Florida, and geographically central to many South Georgia and North Florida cities, Lake City was chosen to undergo this site expansion. The Lake City VA Medical Center on Marion Avenue has seen tremendous growth over the years, so much that the needs have outgrown the space. The secondary location was designed with many of the obstacles of the original building in mind, giving patients ease of access and an all-around more comfortable experience. This new location has plenty of parking, offers a onestop-shop for primary care, and is conveniently located near the interstate, close to hotels and restaurants. Not only will it be easier for patients to navigate to the building, but this location is a single-story unit, meaning it will offer a much smoother transition for those with restricted mobility. Jim Zuber, project manager with the Stewart Team of Rockford Realty Group, has been involved in the remodel since the VA staff first began scouting out the property. Through planning the project from the ground up, conducting staff reviews, and designing the space, Zuber

has enjoyed working on this stateof-the-art facility that will bring so much to the community. “I think this Jim Zuber Project Manager space is The Stewart Team going to be a great win for this community in every aspect. It’s a good thing all around; it’s good for the VA and the veterans, for the population, and especially for the community,” Zuber expressed. “It’s a great opportunity for this town! I’m glad we were able to get involved and help make it a success for everyone.”

The Lake City VA Medical Center is one of two VAMCs in the North Florida/ South Georgia Veterans Health System. The Lake City VAMC provides a full range of comprehensive healthcare including primary care, specialty care, and long-term care. FLORIDA GATEWAY COLLEGE BRINGS BACK

STUDENT

RESIDENCES

By Isaac Myers

After being closed for nearly a decade, Granger Hall, the former student residences at Florida Gateway College, have reopened for the fall semester!

88 |

FamilyMagazine

Granger Hall was closed in 2008 and reconfigured to accommodate faculty offices and a state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab for Florida Gateway College. The building consists of four wings with a capacity of twentytwo students per wing. Two of the wings, one for female students and one for male students, have been reopened and currently have 32 of the possible 44 spaces filled with full-time students and student athletes pursuing different higher education programs that the college offers.

Florida Gateway College has a large service region spanning five counties (Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Union, and Baker), and many of its students commute more than half an hour to the college multiple times per week. The issue that arises for those living in the outlying communities, according to Dr. Jennifer Price, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, is transportation. “We wanted to offer all of our students the opportunity to further their education without any obstacles. We can now allow students who struggled with transportation the opportunity to live on campus.

HOW DID FGC MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

Florida Gateway College believes student success, as well as student retention, is directly correlated with engagement on campus, and providing residence life is one of the best ways to keep students engaged. The goal behind the project was not only to provide housing, but to provide a means for students to interact more than ever before. Dr. Price noted, “when you have students on campus, it brings more life to student life. In the short time since the residences have been reopened, we have already seen an increase in interaction among students on campus.”

The main obstacle, Dr. Barrett says, was financing the reopening project. “Of all the costs to reopen, the highest was going to be purchasing new furniture. I was quoted over $175,000 to furnish the residences!” Since this was already an ambitious undertaking from the start, he knew this incredibly hefty price tag was a non-starter. Determined to make it happen, Dr. Barrett sought alternative options. Just a few weeks before Christmas break, he located a small private college in Indiana that had just closed their student residence building after only two years of use. The Indiana college was willing to sell the top-of-the-line, barely used furniture at a steep discount. For just around $12,000 (plus freight), this major financial hurdle was cleared, and the project was underway! Lawrence Barrett, Ed.D.

President, Florida Gateway College

While only two of the four wings are residences as of now, Dr. Lawrence Barrett, FGC President, says the college may open a third wing to students by next year. Though the program is still in its early stages, both Dr. Barrett and Dr. Price noted that the success of the program is already apparent, and that it is an important and exciting step forward for the future of the college.

Honoring Those Who Served By Jeweliana Register

Jeanette Tyre, When Community Hospice wife of Edgel Tyre opened the doors to their Lake City location, the staff had no idea the impact their first patient would have on their lives.

The first patient to walk through their doors would be veteran Edgel Joseph Tyre, a man who served in the United States Marine Corps and honorably discharged in April 1962.

Edgel Tyre “Community Hospice’s staff, volunteers and Billie Adkins are the ones that made a difference the last days of Edgel’s journey, making him as peaceful as possible. Their support, guidance, services and compassionate care during the loss of our loved one was greatly appreciated. I am thankful to Community Hospice for being here in Lake City and helping the community with the services they provide for end-of-life care.” —Jeanette Tyre, wife of Edgel Tyre

With their strong desire to serve others and honor those who have served our country so bravely, the team at Community Hospice, led by Nurse Manager Lisa Screen, began planning a way to honor Tyre during his last days. The plan was to present Tyre with a pin, certificate, and flag at his home as a way to thank him for sacrificing his freedom to defend our country. Familiar with the process for honoring a veteran in this way, Char Miller, director of marketing and communications, reached out to her former coworker and friend, Andrew Coughlan with the Wounded Warrior Project. A combat-wounded veteran, Coughlan oversees over 14,000 wounded veterans in Florida, donates his bone marrow to fellow veterans, and, last year,

There was not a dry eye in the house when Tyre was honored for his incredible service to his country. His wife, Jeanette Tyre, said it brought tears to her eyes and a sense of closure to the family. She removed a photo from the wall in their home that had been there for years to make room for her husband’s plaque. “He was so honored that day, as was the family, when they presented him with the plaque, the pin and the flag,” Jeanette expressed. “It was very touching.” Edgel Joseph Tyre completed his journey later that evening, passing away in his home, surrounded by his loved ones. “It was a release, that moment,” Lisa Screen explained. “Maybe it’s what he needed, to feel the presence of another soldier.” With so many personal ties to service and veterans, the team at Community

Andrew Coughlan Specialist United States Army (Retired)

Andrew Coughlan was chosen by Community Hospice to present Edgel Tyre with a pin, certificate, and flag honoring his service. Specialist Andrew Coughlan grew up in Ludington, Michigan, and was motivated to join the Army after his high school graduation by the tragic events of 9/11. Coughlan was deployed to Iraq in September of 2003. On July 19th, 2004, Coughlan’s forward operating base Chosin came under a heavy enemy mortar attack. During the unfolding events, Coughlan provided aid to his injured comrades and worked to secure the bodies of those who were killed in action from the burning debris. Roughly two years later, he was medically discharged from the army due to post-traumatic stress. Coughlan was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Valor for his actions on that day. Upon returning home, Coughlan’s PTSD served as a barrier to his reintegration. He says he took responsibility for his transition and sought help at the VA hospital in Michigan. After overcoming his battle with PTSD, Coughlan built his career around helping other veterans as they transition back from their military service. He has worked with the Wounded Warrior Project since 2011 as an outreach coordinator and is now the alumni manager overseeing Florida and Puerto Rico.

CHANGING LIVES one shoebox at a time By Isaac Myers

Christmas time is right around the corner, and for most that means peppermint hot chocolate, a photo op with Santa, and time spent with family opening presents. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and it is the perfect opportunity to spread Christmas cheer to those in need. With the help of Samaritan’s Purse, our community has the opportunity to send precious children across the globe a Christmas present they will never forget. The best part? These shoeboxes cover not only the fun surprises like dolls and baseballs, but also crucial personal care items and the hope and love of Jesus Christ.

Samaritan’s Purse is an international Christian humanitarian relief organization that provides aid to people in over 100 countries. Disaster relief, education, construction projects, and medical ministries are just a few of the many ways in which Samaritan’s Purse reaches out to those around the world in need. Their missions, however, not only extend to physical need, but spiritual as well. Samaritan’s Purse has many different programs focused on both of these. One of these programs is Operation Christmas Child. This outreach mission collects shoeboxes full of items such as toys, personal care products, and clothes that are packed by churches, Christian groups, and individuals all across the country. The shoeboxes are collected, inspected and prayed over, then from the collection center, sent out to pastors and non-governmental organizations across the world. They are then given to children and families in need, along with a Gospel lesson book or Bible written in the native language of the recipients. Every year, thousands of these shoeboxes are distributed, and, to date, over 125 million have made their way to families across the globe.

The power behind the boxes: A testimony When packing her shoebox, Katie Hall had no idea where it would end up. Provided with only the gender of the recipient, she selected items she knew she would love to receive and wrapped her shoebox in her favorite wrapping paper. She then sent it off, not thinking much else of it again. Just a few short months later, her home church, First Baptist Church of Roanoke, Virginia, was taking a group of young adults on a mission trip to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. After much hesitation, Katie decided to sign up. She had always been very shy, and she was not excited about the prospect of speaking to strangers about God in a foreign place, not to mention her fear of flying. However, as she told her pastor, Patrick Shaw (formerly of Lake City), she felt as though something was pulling her towards this trip, and there was a reason she was supposed to be there. The journey wasn’t easy. The airline lost Katie’s luggage, and her fear of flying made the trip very strenuous. When they arrived, it was clear her shyness was going to make it harder for her to interact with people, and she quickly found her role as the one who was frequently in prayer and the one playing with the little children as they visited people in poor neighborhoods all over the Yerevan. As the trip wound to a close, Pastor Shaw, Katie, and the rest of the team found themselves in prayer,

The first thing she noticed was the wrapping paper. “That’s my favorite wrapping paper!” she said. She soon realized this was the very shoebox she had packed and sent away the year asking God to do something big on before. She began to cry. Katie knew their last day. This time, the teams were that the box had contained a gospel split up to where Katie was leading her card. How you can get involved: 1. Connect with your local church Many local churches are plugged in to Operation Christmas Child and make it very easy to get Pastor Zeb Cook involved with the program. Hopeful Baptist Church in Lake City is one of these churches, and every year they help collect and send out hundreds of shoeboxes. Pastor Zeb Cook says, “It’s a good opportunity for us to reach the ends of the earth. And it’s not just about the gift they receive, there’s a spiritual gift as well.” The missions team at Hopeful Baptist Church promotes the program and provides information on everything from when the shoeboxes are due to what you can put inside them. Many local churches have their own resources as well, so check with your church. 2. Pack your very own If your local church does not provide resources connected to Operation Christmas Child, or you connect with the mission and want to roll up your sleeves and get going, you’re in luck! Due dates, packing info, and even a way to download and print your shipping label are all available online at samaritanspurse.org.
