Full Syllabus 2022/23 The Supernatural History of the Highlands and Islands The supernatural realm lives cheek by jowl with the living in the everyday lives of Scotland’s Gaels. From apparitions to second sight, the ‘Gaelic Otherworld,’ as John Gregorson Campbell described it, has been an integral part of Gaelic culture since time immemorial.
You will explore elements of the Gaelic supernatural, and share songs and stories associated with all facets of this fascinating field of study. Digital Recording Studio Experience An entry level course that will teach you all the techniques required to use your digital audio workstation effectively and with confidence. You will be given the opportunity to see your own digital recording project through to fruition. Recording, editing mixing and mastering will all be covered as you produce your professional pre-production master file.

Composition A great opportunity to learn the art of composition or brush up on your compositional skills. Explore ways in which you can create strong and original melodic lines, and harmonies which both complement and enhance. We will look at the work of famous composers and how their techniques and practices can be used to benefit your own creations.

Allan Henderson has years of teaching experience and is only too happy to share his knowledge and store of tunes and stories at a pace that suits you. Now an acknowledged subset of the Gaelic music cannon, the music of the First World War is a varied and deeply engaging genre. Atlantic Connections – The Fiddle Styles of Cape Breton, Ulster and the Scottish Highlands Study the fiddle styles of these three distinct musical regions. What connects them? What distinguishes their style from others? You will cover a new melody each week, complete with bowings and stylistic markings, while learning more about the socio-cultural conditions that shaped these rich fiddling traditions.
An ear taught course with sheet music and recordings also supplied.
The chance to travel to the Outer Hebrides and take in the various cultural and musical environment out there. When I was out in Uist learning about piobaireachd and Canntaireachd from a guest tutor – it was interesting to find out how it is used in the piping community there. Composing & Compositional Techniques Within the Gaelic Tradition What makes a melody Gaelic? A chance to study form and structure within Scottish Gaelic song and melody. A course that looks at everything from the earliest known songs and melodies within our tradition to the work of Gaelic bards

The Dancing Traditions of Uist The people of Uist are rightly proud of their folk dance traditions, and on this one day course you will examine the individuals and events that forged those traditions.
The life and times of dancing master Ewen MacLachlan will feature heavily, and you will have an opportunity to try some of the dances popular in his day, and some that remain a staple part of any social occasion in these islands.

Ceol na Mara – Seafaring traditions of the Hebrides and the music that accompanied them. The songs and stories of a rich cultural legacy – melodies for attracting seals, the yearnings of young men sailing under the red duster, the work songs of fishermen and the laments of wives for their husbands lost at sea.

The Great Pipers An in-depth look at some of the luminaries that shaped the piping world, with a specific focus on Uist and the central role it has played in the history of the bagpipe. Music Theory Boot Camp A two-day immersion course in music theory that explores all the questions that keep musicians awake at night: What is the difference between compound and common time? What is a pentatonic scale?
How can I identify intervals?
This short course is also ideal as a refresher for those with prior knowledge of the subject.
