A Message from Our President

1929 1969 2019

Dear Friends of Catholic High, Welcome to our 2018-2019 Annual Report! From achievements in academics and the arts to awards in athletics and record-breaking fundraising events, Lancaster Catholic High School celebrated a banner year in all facets of our ministry during the 2018-19 school year. We are proud to share some of the year’s highlights with you! Each of the accomplishments chronicled here—and every facet of the education our students received in and outside the classroom—was made possible by the 3,241 gifts we received this year from thousands of LCHS alumni, current and past parents, business sponsors and friends whom we honor and thank in these pages. The enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by our faculty, staff, students, parents, benefactors, volunteers and Board of Directors resulted in a superb educational experience for each of our students. Perhaps the best summary of the impact of our now 90-year-old mission to graduate intellectually astute, passionately faithful and socially responsible young women and men are these distinctions earned by the members of the class of 2019: $11,950,341 in Merit Scholarships earned, 86% accepted by their top choice college, 93% attending college or university and 4% serving in the military or as a human service volunteer! Perhaps most significant of all is our students response to our theme this year: “Agape: Made to Love,” which was to contribute over 16,000 hours of service to community organizations such as homeless shelters, soup kitchens and dozens of programs helping those in need. Lancaster Catholic High School is built on ninety years of philanthropic tradition. From student service hours to parent and alumni volunteerism to the financial generosity of thousands in our community, each generation has contributed to make Catholic High the vibrant school it is today. Giving is at the core of this tradition, and it connects Crusaders everywhere. We honor and thank all those whose support is so vital to the continuing ministry of Catholic education at 650 Juliette Avenue, whether that started at the first graduation in 1929, 50 years ago or this year. We hope that you will enjoy reading about the numerous accomplishments of our faculty, alums and students on the following pages. We hope also that you will join us in a prayer of thanksgiving for the many staff members, volunteers and benefactors whose unstinting generosity with their time, talent and treasure made it all possible! Go Crusaders!

Digital Drawing with Bot by Emily Svetecz ‘13

At Lancaster Catholic, artists now have the opportunity to create works of art with paint that never needs to dry through the creation of a Digital Illustration Program which includes interactive canvases, design software on brand-new iMacs and a professional digital illustration instructor. With over 25 years of digital illustration experience and knowledge, John “Bot” Roda ‘70, has taken the course under his wing. In a world that is increasingly digital, students interested in digital illustration and artwork have the ability to use the Wacom Cintiq 22 inch HD Creative Pen Displays that allow them to draw and paint directly on the display’s surface screen to create masterpieces By working in layers you in the digital realm. have an infinite ability to As a high schooler at Lancaster Catholic, Bot Roda was known for his caricatures of his fellow classmates and teachers. After a time in change any part of your the US Navy and at Godfrey Advertising in Lancaster, Bot spends art work. his time as a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist. ~ Bot Roda '70 “I will be mentoring the art students and teaching them how to sketch in layers in Photoshop while creating from the back forward,” said Bot Roda. “Adobe Photoshop is pretty complex but I found it to be tremendous as a painting program and for creating digital art.” According to Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop layers are like sheets of stacked acetate paper. You can see through transparent areas of a layer to the layers below while still having the ability to move a layer to position the content on the layer, like sliding a sheet of acetate in a stack. “Layer functions, the various tools and how you can manipulate the tool functions in Photoshop can create different effects. In a way, it is similar to watercolor techniques,” explained Bot Roda. “You begin with a sketch and then gradually fill in with color. By working in layers you have an infinite ability to change any part of your art work whether it is globally or if you’d want to center in on one thing.” The Digital Illustration Program is open to all Art I and Art II students who express interest in learning more about digital design. Amanda Mueller, a junior in Art II, was selected to participate in the Digital Illustration Program. “Mr. Ressel thought that I would benefit and be able to impact the school with my artistic talents through the Digital Illustration Program,” said Miss Mueller. “Mr. Roda is a very knowledgeable instructor and mentor in this field since he is an active illustrator. He is able to teach us about certain designs and the history that goes into it while giving us a jump-start into graphic design.” 4 | Annual Report 2019

Inspirational Mural

The Aevidum Club had an amazing new mural created at the end of the school year with hopes of inspiring the Catholic High community for years to come. Aevidum Club moderator Ms. Dana Kinsey has had a goal of a mural since the program began at LCHS in 2012. The students selected "Together We're Stronger" as the main message of the mural and the group knew that hands in varying colors were essential to the design to endorse acceptance and diversity at Lancaster Catholic. Aevidum wanted to suggest a communal prayer as a way to keep the school united. The semicolon and its implications for a symbol of suicide prevention were also a key component. In April, Amanda Mueller '20, took the ideas of the club and created her design, and with the sage advice from art teacher Mr. Dick Ressel '71, was able to perfectly encapsulate everyone's thoughts. Mueller and the rest of the club unveiled the design at the conclusion of the year-end Mass in June.

It’s all that I envisioned and more. The beautiful blues and skin tones are so rich and calming. I hope that it reminds every person in our community that in adding our individualism, we enhance our collective power. Every heart and mind in unison can build a healthy school, the school we all deserve.

Serving Our Country

It is not uncommon for a Lancaster Catholic graduate to receive a diploma, walk across the stage and then decide to serve our country. But the recent run at Catholic High has been special. Noah Bamert '17 received an appointment to the United States Military Academy and is halfway through his stint at West Point, N.Y. where he is majoring in Defense and Strategic Studies and minoring in Arabic. This summer, he spent three weeks in Morocco and is finishing his summer as a cadre training the class of 2022. Hannah Citsay '18 just finished her first year in the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. She joined the rowing team and excelled in her classes thanks to her Catholic High education. On May 22, Ben Ryan' 19 received his appointment to West Point and was joined on stage by Bamert. Judge Leonard Brown III announced the news that Ryan would accept his appointment at the Class of 2019 Senior Awards Ceremony, a scholarship valued at over $400,000. Others in the past have also received their appointments after their time at LCHS, but to have a Crusader earn the right to accept an appointment into a Service Academy in three consecutive years is a rare feat. The success that Bamert and Citsay had, along with the help of Catholic High faculty and staff, is what guided Ryan through his journey to this difficult decision.

Advancing Science by Dana Myers

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. Ben Franklin Catholic High donors who are passionate about STEM are ensuring that students are involved and learning everyday. Their targeted investments are immersing students in subjects which can literally change lives. Specifically, three donors made significant STEM investments at Lancaster Catholic, exposing students to new areas in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math field. The Edward ‘75 and Deidre Heilbron Foundation and Dr. Stanley Mertzman, along with an anonymous donor, made this possible. Their investments are enabling Lancaster Catholic to purchase new computers and software that engage students in Engineering, allowing them to conduct mini hack-a-thons by designing and problem-solving in a single class period. Students are also exploring forces and motion, energy, and waves, especially light, sound and optics with the purchase of new physical science kits. The Science Department was also able to purchase electrophoresis chambers that enable students to conduct DNA and RNA comparisons along with an incubator for wastewater, cell and milk testing and culturing. Simply put, without these generous contributions, this would not be a reality to the young minds at Catholic High. With the news of a complete renovation of all of the science labs inside the building as noted in the recently-approved campus master plan, STEM is moving forward as a high priority at Lancaster Catholic. The new plan calls for new state-of-the-art STEM labs to be among the first priorities in Reilly Hall. If you share a passion for STEM, or other areas that will advance the mission of Lancaster Catholic, your investment may also be designated to ensure that students have the opportunity to be introduced to the area you wish. Please contact Mary Jo Yarris at mjyarris@lchsyes.org or 717-509-0313 for a designated or general gift. However you give, you are investing in the students of LCHS.

Social Experiment by Sue Martin ‘72

In the Winter Magazine, we featured our partnership with Millersville University offering courses at Lancaster Catholic. The courses offered are part of Millersville’s Entrepreneurial Program. For the spring semester, 23 students were enrolled in the Social Media Campaigns course. Taught by Professor Oliver Feakins, the students focused on the impact social media can have on a business model. As the culminating project, the students, working in teams, partnered with a local business to analyze the company’s use of social media. Their study of the business offered suggestions on which platforms to use to reach their target audiences; how to keep the postings current; revamping websites to be more consumer friendly and much more. The teams then presented their findings to the business owners using a slide presentation they developed. Each business also received a copy of their written project report which included the data collected and their recommendations. The businesses that participated were: BellissiMama, Bow Hunters Superstore, Command Fire, Gish’s Furniture, Luxe Salon, Maven Beauty, Primerica and Stroopies.

"The Entrepreneurial Program was extremely beneficial to me and my classmates, as we developed many important business skills. These courses taught us to think critically as well as creatively. I highly encourage more Catholic High students to consider enrolling in this program." ~ Cam Barto '19 Mr. Rod Messick, COO & CFO of Berkshire Hathaway, provides invaluable feedback to Tobey Prime '19 after his group's Social Media Campaign pitch. »

Rooted In Her Faith by Kevin Carver

Harriet Ryan ‘92 didn’t know that a Pulitzer Prize was in her future while she was walking the hallowed halls of Catholic High. She didn’t even realize that she would become a journalist. But she frequently thinks fondly about her Lancaster Catholic education, made possible through donor scholarships and financial aid, even though she now lives over 2,500 miles away from the farmland on which she grew up. Ryan recently won the Pulitzer for Journalism in the Investigative Reporting category (along with her Los Angeles Times colleagues Matt Hamilton and Paul Pringle). Their stories about former University of Southern California gynecologist Dr. George Tyndall led to his arrest in June on multiple counts of sexual abuse against his patients. “I’m lucky to only work on things that I think are important,” Ryan said. But winning the Pulitzer never crossed her mind while they worked on this story.

... Maybe they read the Los Angeles Times and saw how USC handled the gynecologist and how terribly that worked out for USC. And maybe, some place behind closed doors that I will never be, they will do the right thing because of our reporting. ~ Harriet Ryan '92

“There’s so much good work in journalism every year; so many people that are incredible, bringing to light injustices. To ever think that you have a shot at (winning the Pulitzer) would be insane.” When asked about the importance of her story that exposed Tyndall, but also the University, Ryan explained what she thinks it means not just for her community, but for the world, in general. “I like to think that at some place today, some organization has a big problem, and they’re trying to figure out what to do about it. Are they going to cover it up, or do the right thing? And maybe they read the Los Angeles Times and saw how USC handled the gynecologist and how terribly that worked out for USC. And maybe, some place behind closed doors that I will never be, they will do the right thing because of our reporting.” That type of thinking defines Harriet Ryan. She thinks about her career in journalism as an exercise in helping people. Her work that received the highest praise, isn’t about her, but about making sure the world is “fair and more just.” Ryan believes a part of that foundation was laid at Lancaster Catholic, and she credits people from her past. “I think about the teachers and what they taught frequently.” 14 | Annual Report 2019

Harriet Ryan with Los Angeles Times colleagues Paul Pringle (left) and Matt Hamilton on April 15, when they heard the news that they won a Pulitzer Prize. (AP Photo)

She remembers the way Mr. Dan Fritsch '58 taught proportions whenever she needs to figure out a percentage. She recalls the way that Mr. Joe Timko allowed her American History class to talk openly about the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearing, especially during the recent Brett Kavanaugh hearings. But she detailed a fundamental lesson that she learned in her Religion class with Mr. Steve Ihnat. “He taught us the Catholic doctrine in a way that was progressive. He never told us what to believe, or what we should personally conclude. I remember him saying ‘Our faith is based equally on scripture, tradition and conscience. And you have to use your conscience.’ At the time, I didn’t realize that it would stick with me, but that way of thinking and feeling confident in my faith as I got older, knowing that I could be intelligent and well-read but also a faithful Catholic was a very important part of my spirituality.” Nowadays, Ryan visits home whenever she’s able, noting that her daughters love playing on the farm where she grew up here in Lancaster County. And knowing that a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist thinks about her roots often reminds us all of the importance of Catholic High.

Reflecting on Reflexion with Matt & Matt

Matt Campagna ’15 & Matt Roda ’15 have been busy over the past six months…very busy. After months of intense planning, Reflexion Interactive Technologies has taken off. The tech start-up has grown from two full-time employees to six. The most significant development is the re-establishment of the services provided through Reflexion’s Edge device. Originally designed to detect signs of a concussion in athletes, the Edge now provides services that are much more global and beneficial to virtually anyone and everyone. As two incredibly bright & personable LCHS Alumni, Matt C. & Matt R. have blown past simply detecting concussions. Reflexion’s main purpose is to serve as your very own personal Neuro Fitness & Cognitive Coach. With a much more universal application, Reflexion is being marketed in hospitals to assist with patient rehabilitation, senior care facilities to help the aging population, and in our military academies to enhance the hand-eye coordination and response time of our country’s finest service men & women. Newly delivered Edges are currently being utilized at Penn State University, Duke University, and the United States Air Force Academy. Six months ago, Matt C. & Matt R. were focused on the construction process of their hardware. Now, they are completely focused on expanding and enhancing the neuro-fitness and cognitive coaching services provided by these devices. “Reflexion is constantly getting smarter. The app and all the software are updated wirelessly on a routine basis. The device will never be outdated as its services constantly are improved,” explained Matt C. Another development over the past six months has been the launch of Reflexion’s Internship Program. As Matt R. stated, “This past Spring, we learned so much as a result of the students interns from Lancaster Catholic as they helped get more hands on the product. These students played a major role in improving the Reflexion’s services. We look forward to continuing to partner with our alma mater!” Through several generous donations, including the TangerKids Grant, Lancaster Catholic purchased a Reflexion's Edge device to be used by its students in health classes, physical education classes and its athletic teams. Because of their relationship with their alma mater, Matt C. & Matt R. discounted the cost of the expensive device to allow Crusaders to begin using this valuable technology earlier than planned. For more information on how you can help invest in the annual expense of an Edge device at LCHS, please contact Joe Sahd '01 (717-5090313 or jsahd@lchsyes.org). The Lancaster Catholic Fund

Lancaster Catholic is excited to announce that the theme for the 2019-20 Lancaster Catholic Fund is Beginning with the End in Mind! It challenges each one of us to look at things a little differently. This theme asks us to think about each day, week and year with a new perspective: What role can I fulfill that will help Lancaster Catholic High School shape the hearts and minds of more young people within our community? As we begin this year’s Lancaster Catholic Fund campaign, we invite you to join us in this selfreflection. Together, Beginning with the End in Mind, we encourage all of you to envision a campaign in which every family generously contributes what they can afford because they believe in the mission of Lancaster Catholic. Since tuition alone does not meet our annual expenses, we challenge you to envision an LC Fund campaign that not only just allows us to keep our doors open, but enables Catholic High to hire the very best teachers and leaders for our students at competitive salaries. The Lancaster Catholic Fund provides opportunities for all students to grow academically and spiritually, facilitates champions on our athletic teams and in our Fine & Performing Arts groups and ensures that Catholic High is able to stand out in our community as the best option for an outstanding, faith-filled high school experience. Please keep your eyes peeled for the Annual LC Fund Appeal Letter, which will be hitting mailboxes the first week in September! Get your pledge card or payment in early before the start of the Phonathon. This year’s dates for the Phonathon are: • October 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th We need your help! If you or someone in your family would like to serve as a volunteer for any of our Phonathon evenings, please sign up using the following link: www.lchsyes.org/phonathon/ Thank you in advance for your involvement and investment in our 2019-20 Lancaster Catholic Fund and our upcoming Phonathon!

The Lancaster Catholic Fund is VITAL to our existence as a healthy Catholic school. Our goal is to raise $2 Million every year to help cover the gap between tuition and the Actual Cost of Education. Thanks to our donors, our annual tuition per student is well-below national average. ~ Tim Hamer, LCHS President

The St. Thomas Aquinas Society is named in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas, who was named “Patron of Catholic Schools” by Pope Leo XIII in 1880. A statue of St. Thomas Aquinas is visible on the outer wall of the Old Main section of Catholic High.

Remembering A Catholic High Legend Lancaster Catholic is blessed and honored to remember the life and legacy of Dr. John F. Schreder, who passed away in early July. A 1944 LCHS graduate, John and his wife, Catherine (Emig) Schreder '50, would have celebrated their 65th anniversary on July 10th. Faith and family were the two pillars of Dr. John and Catherine's lives. Catholic education was so important to them that all of their children and grandchildren carried on the family legacy at Lancaster Catholic: Donna Matuzak '73, Kenneth Schreder '74, Dr. Maribeth LeBreton '77, and Dr. Michael Schreder '83; Megan '08 & Ryan Matuzak '10; Annaliese '16 & Helena Schreder '18; Amanda '12 & Emily LeBreton '14; Andrew '10, Matthew '12 & Christopher Schreder '14. His family undeniably gave him the most joy in his life. After serving in the Navy in World War II, Dr. John was honorably discharged and attended St. Francis University in Loretta, Pa. and Georgetown University School of Dentistry. He established his dental practice in Lancaster in 1952. In 1994, the practice was relocated to Good Drive, where he was joined by his son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Michael and Jane Aldrich Schreder. He retired in 1997 after 45 years in the practice. Dr. John was passionate about his career as a dentist, and he loved going to work every day, caring for his patients and making them laugh. He was dearly loved by his patients who he also considered his friends. On behalf of the Schreder family, we would like to thank everyone who donated in Dr. John's memory to the Lancaster Catholic High School Building Fund. We’ll miss Dr. John cheering for the Crusaders. We’ll miss his jokes and laughter wherever he went. His legacy will endure forever.

St. Catherine’s Society The St. Catherine Society honors the individuals who, through their planned and estate gifts, have made a significant commitment to Lancaster Catholic High School. The Society expresses Catholic High’s abiding gratitude for those persons who endorse its heritage and traditions and who have provided philanthropic supports to ensure that generations to come will enjoy the benefits of a Lancaster Catholic High School education. Established in 1999, the St. Catherine Society provides a way to recognize our special benefactors who have helped to secure the future of this institution by the thoughtful, meaningful inclusion of Catholic High in their financial planning. The Society allows Lancaster Catholic to convey our heartfelt and everlasting gratitude to planned and deferred donors before the gift is actually realized. We are not only grateful to them for their vision in providing for the future needs of Lancaster Catholic High School, but also for their leadership. During the past fiscal year, we received $14,447.78 in bequests. Please contact Mary Jo Yarris at 717.509.0313 to learn more about Planned Giving. 38 | Annual Report 2019

"Judge not, and you will not be judged; Condemn not, and you will not be condemned; Forgive, and you will be forgiven; Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:37-38 Lancaster Catholic High School | 39
