Rachel’s Challenge- September 10th Rachel’s Challenge will be at LCHS on Tuesday, September 10th for an in-school assembly. All parents are invited to a special evening assembly. The evening assembly will take place in the LCHS Library from 6-7 PM and childcare will be provided. Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Through her example, Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact on the lives of millions of people every year. Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day. Rachel’s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassion, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities. A few weeks after the tragedy, Darrell Scott, Rachel’s father, spoke to a Congressional House Judiciary Committee regarding issues of school violence.
“Rachel’s Challenge is the MOST powerful intervention I have seen in 40 years of working in education.” - Dr. Robert Marzano
Shortly afterwards, he founded “Rachel’s Challenge”, a bullying and violence abatement program. If you have any questions about the event, please contact Ms. Dana Kinsey at dkinsey@lchsyes.org.

Rosary Group at LCHS Please consider joining fellow parents, alums and faculty once a month to pray the rosary for the Lancaster Catholic High School Community. The group will meet one Tuesday a month in the morning. We will start at 7:00 a.m. in the chapel for Mass, then move to Campus Ministry to pray the rosary. We will be using Praying the Rosary Like Never Before: Encounter the Wonder of Heaven and Earth by Edward Sri. The plan is to read a chapter a month and discuss, followed by the recitation of the rosary using reflections from the book. A very kind donor has offered to cover the cost of the books, so if you plan on joining us, please email Mrs. Kathy Alton at kalton@lchsyes.org so she can order a book for you. Books will be distributed at the first meeting. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

All students must attend one retreat per year but may choose from a variety. Many retreats have a limit so sign-ups begin at 3:00 pm, today. By going to the Campus Ministry webpage on the LCHS website you will find the retreat signup genius where your student can sign-up. School Counseling Corner Schedule Changes School Counseling Office personnel have been inundated with requests for schedule changes. While we understand the need for some schedule adjustments, many times schedule changes require more than just swapping out one class for the other. We are doing everything in our power to provide the best educational experience for your child, however, there are some requests we simply cannot fulfill due to overloaded sections, prerequisite classes and conflicts with other classes. Sometimes there is no way to avoid a schedule that seems lopsided with study halls one semester as opposed to the other.
AP Testing Students taking AP courses will need to register to take their spring, 2020 AP exams by October 18, 2019 due to changes that the College Board has instituted. We will be using Total Registration for on-line registration and payment. More information will be forthcoming!
College Boot Camp The School Counseling Department began the new school year with hosting a College Boot Camp for seniors looking to learn more information about the search process. 15 College Admissions Counselors from PA and as far away as Pittsburgh and Loyola New Orleans(!) helped our students with the many questions they had. Dana Kinsey from the English Department provided a lesson on the college essay and Jill Grosh assisted students with Naviance.
College Financial Aid Night Parents of seniors are invited to a presentation from Sonya Mann-McFarland from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to learn about college financial aid. This is a great educational opportunity being held in the School Library on Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 5:00 PM. We will once again be hosting the FAFSA completion night as well in November--more to come on that!
LCHS Parking Lot Expectations In an effort to encourage safe driving in our parking lot, we ask that students AND parents adhere to the following safety rules at all times. PARENT DROP OFF/PICK-UP Parents may DROP OFF students in the morning in front of the glass doors leading into Berger Gym. We ask that you be aware of buses also dropping off, and of students walking in the parking lot. SPECIAL NOTE: Students dropped off after 8:00 AM, must be dropped off at the main entrance to sign in with the attendance office. Students picked up before the end of the school day must sign out and leave through the main entrance doors in the front of the building. PICK-UP AT END OF SCHOOL DAY Parents may pull up along the sidewalk in the parking lot only as far as the parking lot monitor, who is stationed at the speed bump near the cafeteria. Parents must remain behind the parking lot monitor to collect their child and MAY NOT wait in line with the buses in front of the glass doors. • Parents may also pull into an empty parking space and wait for their child. • Parents and Students, please pay close attention to the direction and flow of traffic. There are several one-way arrow signs indicating the proper direction. • Speed limit in the parking lot should not exceed ten (10) miles per hour.
Student Parking Permits Student parking permits will be available for purchase in the main office beginning on Tuesday, August 27th. Students must have a completed LCHS registration card at time of purchase along with payment. Parking permits are $50 and good for the entire school year. Students must park in the designated student parking spots. Any student who drives to school and does not have a parking permit, or who parks in faculty parking, will be given a warning and/or disciplinary consequences if behavior continues. No permit will be sold without verification of drivers license.
Locker Decoration Policy Significant clean-up and repairs had to be made to many of our student lockers at the end of last school year. Many had to be re-painted because of writing done in permanent marker, and many had to be thoroughly scrubbed due to tape and stickers leaving a very unpleasant residue that had to be removed. Moving into the new school year we are reminding students of the LCHS locker rules that we expect to be followed. Students may NOT write on any part of the locker or put tape or stickers on a locker. If students would like to decorate their locker, they may use “white boards” or “dry erase boards” for writing. The only tape that should be used is painters tape, which easily comes off, or students may use “Command” mounting strips or hooks, which do not damage surfaces. Magnets can also be used. Please remember that lockers are the property of Lancaster Catholic High School. Disciplinary consequences will be enforced for students who abuse or damage a locker. Lancaster Catholic is not responsible for anything lost or stolen from a locker, and we strongly encourage students to use a school lock at all times. If your student has any issues with their locker upon the start of the school year (broken door or shelf, writing that you cannot remove that may have been missed in clean-up, etc.) please have them report it at the main office. Thank you!
