Practicing What We Preach -Marta Kessler ‘12

T

he mission of Lancaster Catholic is to develop students who are intellectually astute, passionately faithful and socially responsible. We can often easily quantify the intellectual piece through test scores and college acceptances. But how do we quantify our passionate faith? We can list our alumni who are pursuing priesthood, but that is just one sliver of how our alumni are living out their faith. Marta Kessler ‘12 is a perfect example of what our passionately faithful alumni are doing to make our world and our Church a better place. After having a tremendous experience of faith and community here at Lancaster Catholic, Marta moved on to college, but never quite found that same sense of faith community. Through her younger brother, Kurt ’15, Marta was able to connect with missionaries at the University of Pittsburg last year – and suddenly the flame was ignited again. Having completed her undergrad, Marta signed on with the Fellowship of

Christian University Students (FOCUS) for a two-year assignment at Pitt. Her goal as a lay missionary is to win the hearts of college students, build them

in the faith and then send them into the world. Marta will be hosting Bible studies, meeting with students individually, working collaboratively with other missionaries at Pitt and living the Gospel with joy! The cumulative work of FOCUS is found on over 100 college campuses through the work of over 500 missionaries. Each missionary seeks to model authentic friendship while sharing the Good News of Jesus and the beauty of the Church. FOCUS will send 1,000 students on missionary trips this year and host 7,000 young people for their annual conference. Marta joins this powerful ministry as she reflects the light of Christ for others to see. While many college graduates were seeking jobs and asking about salary, Marta has taken a leap of faith and is working to fully fund her own ministry – from rent and utilities to funding for events to coffee with a collegian when they call and need someone to talk with. This is what passionate faith and trust in God’s plan looks like!

Marta has estimated a $3,000 monthly budget to fully support her ministry. To learn more about her ministry or how you could help, please go to https://www.focus.org/ missionaries/marta-kessler.

A Passion for giving back -Linda Ryan ‘65

L

inda Ryan, a member of Lancaster Catholic High School’s class of 1965, was recently re-appointed as the Executive Director of the Maryland/ Pennsylvania branch of an independent non-profit and faith-based community organization, known as Mission of Mercy. For the past 23 years, Linda has been involved in some fashion (former member of National Board and Executive Director) with Mission of Mercy, an organization started by a Catholic couple, Drs. Gianna and Michael Sullivan. Mission of Mercy provides free healthcare, free dental care, and free prescription medications to the uninsured and underinsured, operating from a mobile medial unit (van) that travels from Harrisburg to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania and to Frederick, Taneytown, Brunswick and Reisterstown in Maryland. Linda and her team of volunteer doctors, nurses, interpreters, and non-medical volunteers treat thousands of individuals who have chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, and patients with necessary dental needs such as extractions and fillings. All of Mission of Mercy’s

medical volunteers are licensed, most being retired professionals. Since being founded in 1991 and launched in 1994, Mission of Mercy now has 17 clinics and provides free services to more than 25,000 patients per year in multiple states across the country including Maryland, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Arizona. ...cont. on pg 8

ALUMNI Spotlight In a recent blog post on Mission of Mercy’s website, Henry W. Konerko, PhD, CEO of Mission of Mercy comments, “Having Ms. Ryan join us once again as Executive Director of the Maryland/ Pennsylvania program is a blessing for our patients and the communities we serve. She is the consummate professional who brings a great deal of experience and leadership to Mission of Mercy. She has dedicated her life to serving others and will represent us well in our mission to heal through Love and provide dignity and respect to those we serve.” “We utilize churches for our sites where patients are registered, triaged, receive dental care (if needed), and are then seen by one of three doctors on our mobile medical unit,” Linda said when describing the patient experience at Mission of Mercy. “We also provide pre-natal care, physical therapy and diabetic training at our clinic sites – all free.” Mission of Mercy partners with local hospitals in each community and their medical staff provide free labs, x-rays and MRI’s, while others provide free surgical procedures for Mission of Mercy patients. Based on their mission to “restore dignity and healing through God’s LOVE”, Mission of Mercy provides healthcare 8 | Catholic Highlights

without any pre-qualifications and never asks patients to prove their poverty or residency. “We accept no government support and operate solely on donations. We do this mostly because we are pro-life,” said Linda. Linda’s inspiration to become involved with non-profits began years ago when she gave birth to her disabled son, making her realize her passion for giving back within the community and the need for healthcare among the uninsured and underinsured. “My Catholic education and my loving, Catholic home also prepared me for my life’s work and for all of life’s challenges. I feel very blessed to be a part of this amazing, life-saving ministry.” Since being launched in 1994, Mission of Mercy has provided over 400,000 individual patient visits at no cost and over 600,000 free prescription medications to patients. In the last year, Mission of Mercy’s volunteer staff including doctors, nurses, interpreters, and non-medical staff has logged over 30,000 pro-bono hours with the organization. New Student Orientation With a Family Twist

T

his year’s version of the 10th annual New Student Orientation went off without a hitch, giving the new crop of students a taste of what makes Lancaster Catholic so special, with a little extra motivation to “Just Keep Swimming.” With a Finding Dory spin to it, the Class of 2020 experienced all that is Catholic High; walking the traditional red carpet upon their first entry, dressing up in silly costumes and performing numerous ice breakers to shake the nerves on what is such an important milestone in their lives. This year’s Orientation also had a special family vibe to it as Maddie and Leanna Smith experienced the day

together. Maddie ’18 was a Link Crew member this year, a part of the group of upperclassmen who train throughout the summer to help make what could be a nerve-racking day for the new students more comfortable. Leanna ’20 was about to experience the other side of the day, as a freshman walking into the building for the first time as a student. Maddie had walked in her shoes before, just two years earlier. Having gone through her own New Student Orientation, she didn’t want Leanna to have any hints about what to expect. “She kept asking,” Maddie laughed, “But I thought it would help her more if she didn’t know what we were going to be doing.” After 10 hours of training in the dogdays of August that included memorizing scripts and costume-making (Maddie’s group dressed up as Snapchat, the popular social media platform that has taken this generation by storm), Link Crew finalized plans for this year’s big day with Link Crew Coordinators, Kyla Hockley ’96 and Lauren Malloy ’08, who was a Link Leader in our inaugural year of Link Crew.

“I knew the anxieties that (the freshmen) were having,” Maddie explained. “When I was a freshman, I thought I was the only one having them. But everyone has them when they first come in. So it was a lot of just letting the new students know that they are not alone, and that everyone has felt what they are feeling.

I definitely have a lot more friends just from that day.

everyone comfortable and to put jitters at ease.”

Maddie also explained the hope to expand Link Crew throughout the entire school year, not just that nervous

“I know how anxious I was leading up to that day, and I don’t want anyone else to feel that way. I want everyone to know that once you are here for a few days that you realize just how kind everyone is.”

first day. “We want to be there during midterms and finals, and to attend sporting events to let everyone know that we are a part of the family the entire time that we are here,” she stated. Leanna quickly shook the nerves and realized how much fun she was having. “It was a lot more than I originally expected,” Leanna confessed. “I thought we were just going to break into groups, but we did a lot more just to make

And after experiencing the entire day, Leanna admitted that she’d be interested in joining Link Crew next year.

Leanna’s group dressed up as a different social media craze, Pokemon, and posed for pictures at the end of the day in their dressed-up squads. Now the Link Leaders are competing to win most creative group, picked by Miss Malloy. The reward: Tickets to Homecoming and a 2017 Yearbook.

ALUMNI Spotlight IN THE News Two Lancaster Catholic Staff Members Joyfully Tie the Knot

T

his summer, two members of the Lancaster Catholic High School staff joyfully tied the knot at the rustic and beautiful Riverdale Manor located on the outskirts of Lancaster city. Math teacher, Shannon Hansell, and school counselor, Greg Dietz, exchanged their vows in late July encircled by many more members of the Lancaster Catholic family. After meeting for the first time in the halls of Lancaster Catholic High School and going on their first date at the Lancaster Catholic Carnival, Greg found himself proposing to Shannon a little more than a year ago by the piano in front of Hotel Lancaster - a unique and romantic spot for the both of them. To make the ceremony extra-special, the officiating was done by Greg’s grandfather, the Rev. Joseph B. Dietz. Surrounded by wedding colors of purple and gold, Greg and Shannon were thrilled to have so many members
