Class Notes US Department of Education Visit Lancaster Catholic High School hosted United States Department of Education Assistant Secretary Frank Brogan last week for a brief look at how the administration opened the school safely amid the Coronavirus pandemic. Brogan selected Lancaster Catholic as a school to visit due to its response to the pandemic, by opening safely to all students five days a week, through numerous safety precautions. “We looked at what sorts of protocols that have been put in place to make sure that everyone can come back to school safely,” Brogan said. “We looked at what a very historic institution has be doing to continue to change and evolve with the times in terms of teaching and learning, but also in regards to the reopening during the pandemic. It became a very easy choice that Lancaster Catholic was the school to come visit.” LCHS President Tim Hamer, along with Principal Terry Klugh and Vice Principal Adrienne Howe, detailed for Brogan and his associates the steps that were taken to reopen the building. Also present was the entire LCHS Pandemic Team, consisting of the school nurse, facilities manager, athletic director and the new COVID response coordinator who is in charge of contact tracing in the building. Four members of the student body were also involved in a round table discussion with the delegation.

The brief hour-and-a-half visit concluded with a short tour of the building. Brogan was able to witness the state-ofthe-art thermal scanners used at each entrance of the building as well as classrooms that are equipped with the new technology to stream classes to those who chose to learn virtually this year.

Current Crusaders had the opportunity to voice their opinions on how the 2020-21 school years has been operating to the panel.

A Face Lift for the Athletic Trophy Case

STUDENT With a little under two months and hundreds of hours of work into the project, the renovated trophy case can be viewed, highlighting all of Lancaster Catholic’s victories over the years. “I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish for the Athletic Department,” stated Boyle.

Above: The Athletic Trophy case in the Berger Gym Lobby area received much needed updating over the summer through an Eagle Scout project. Right: Jimmy Boyle poses next to Athletic Director, Rich Hinnenkamp assembling the completed trophy case.

Since 1912, the capstone project of a Boy Scout comes in the form of the Eagle Scout project. Jimmy Boyle ‘22 wanted his Eagle Scout project to benefit Lancaster Catholic High School’s Athletic Department. “An Eagle Scout project must be able to impact the community and show leadership,” said Boyle. “When I spoke with Mr. Hinnenkamp, he recommended that the trophy cases in the main lobby needed updating.” Covered in layers of dust and grim, Crusader championship trophies dating back to the 1970s needed dusted and cleaned, while their display shelving was redesigned.

“My dad’s friend is a contractor,” said Boyle. “He was able to help us come up with a design for the trophies. The goal was to be able to fit as many trophies as we could onto the shelves.” The trophy case was able to be transformed with the help of other Lancaster Catholic students. “Over the summer, I was able to recruit a few of my friends to help me,” said Boyle. “ I was able to show them how to stain the new shelves and installing them.”

SPOTLIGHT Ethical Hacking Through Drexel University

ALUMNI “Ethical hackers are tasked with finding and reporting vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and exploits in systems including industrial control systems (ICS). ICS control essential functions in systems such as electric grids, nuclear power plants, security systems, and building automation systems. Ethical hackers need to find and decide which vulnerabilities to exploit based on a variety of factors such as vulnerability severity, attack vectors, and attack complexity. To find this information ethical hackers must manually search across multiple data sources and then make decisions. Ethical hackers may have to sort through thousands of vulnerabilities to determine which ones to exploit first. Our goal was to automate this searching and decision-making process.”
