an adventure for the sake of having an adventure – David Grabowski ‘07
Sitting in his windowless office after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, David Grabowski admittedly had settled into a depression. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life, but he needed a different view. After a miraculous three-plus-year journey, that view came from 3,000 feet in the air. “It’s gorgeous up there.” One day, David decided that he wanted to learn how to fly a trike (basically a hanglider on top of a go-kart). And not just learn, but actually fly this bare-bones contraption across the country. He researched everything about trikes, learning about Cal Rodgers, a pilot that first flew across the country in 1911. Rodgers’ flight began in Montauk, N.Y. on a device that more resembled the Wright Brothers’ plane than a motorized scooter and ended in California. And so, after building and learning, and through numerous stumbles, 4 | Catholic Highlights
missteps and personal struggles, David’s 40-day journey to retrace Rodgers’ path (in reverse) began on September 17. On November 2, he made one stop that his idol didn’t make, to Smoketown Airport in Lancaster County. He landed among a crowd of about 20 friends and family and immediately received a hug from his mother. “Usually I land at a rural airport and there’s no one there. Having a group of people looking forward to having me here was kind of overwhelming. And, most airport managers don’t hug me when I land.” The entire journey has been documented by his film crew, from the beginning and the lows of his struggles of why he was doing this to the highs of personal success and actual heights that reached 7,500 feet. David wanted to create a story about what it’s like to become a pilot and what it’s like to fly across the country, but also about the country itself.

“It’s just you, all by yourself. There’s no checklist. No tour guide. Sometimes it’s worth having an adventure for the sake of having an adventure.” After the brief stop home, David got right back in the air and finished his trip, final destination: Montauk. Now that it’s over, this three-year detour in life, he’s conflicted. He compared it to running a marathon, citing that you always want to give up with about six miles to go, but you push through...but that “no one ever decides to run another few miles after the marathon is over.” But he will miss the flights and the peacefulness of the journey. “I’ll probably want to get back up in the air in a few weeks somehow. But I’m looking forward to coming back to things that I love doing, like
writing and music, and rediscover them in new ways.” What else is on the horizon for David? He’s running the New York City Marathon on November 6 with his girlfriend who is expecting. “Hurricane Mini Grabowski”, due to arrive in March.

Total Team EffortLCHS Golf Team Wins State Title The subject line read ‘Dear State Champions’. That was the email sent from Crusader head coach Ron Weaver to his golf team...in the preseason. On October 26, the Lancaster Catholic golf team followed through on that prophetic electronic letter with the program’s first State Title. Led by five upperclassmen, four boys and one girl, the Crusaders captured their preseason goal with a 10-stroke victory. It was the cherry on the top of an amazing season that saw individual and team success from the first match. But, if you ask Weaver, this State Championship was built before the season even started.
6 | Catholic Highlights
“There were so many times that the selflessness of the team came through at practices and in discussions with who should play this round or that round,” Weaver explained. “I knew this was going to be a special season.” The talent that LCHS had this year was unprecidented, and the consistency of that depth was the key to achieving the ultimate prize. Junior RJ VanTash captured the Lancaster-Lebenon League Title earlier in the month, but seniors Will Riva and Lauren Bird each recorded top-5 finishes in the region and district tournaments.

RJ Van Tash, Will Riva and Lauren Bird share a laugh during the State Championship Assembly.
All three claimed top-10 honors at the individual portion of the PIAA State Championships, but all five golfers selected on the day of the team competition came through to earn the crown, just like they did all season.
Riva, the team captain, posted the best score for the team on the magical afternoon, but junior Thomas Bird and senior Sean McNamara both posted great scores and continued to underscore their importance to the team depth. “From 1-to-7, we were the most consistent team every time we stepped on the course this year,” Weaver added. “That consistency was the key to our success allseason.” In all, it marks the 23rd PIAA State Title in Lancaster Catholic Athletic history.

Final Homecoming at Rossmere
L
ancaster Catholic High School held its annual Homecoming festivities on Friday, October 14 and celebrated with anticipation all week long leading up to the final contest at Rossmere Stadium before construction begins on the new athletic complex. With hopes of promoting school spirit and getting the kids excited for Homecoming on Friday, LCHS permitted students to disregard their uniforms for a week and dress according to themed days of Spirit Week. The themes included Purple & Gold Day, ‘Be A Star’ by dressing like your favorite celebrity, Wacky Wednesday, USA Day followed by Class Colors Day. The students of LCHS entered Berger Gym on the morning of Friday, October 14 for a pep rally sporting their class colors. The cheerleaders brought high energy to the entire room with their dances and chants to get students excited for the day ahead. The cheerleaders were joined in dance by a few LCHS staff members, led by Admissions Counselor and former cheerleader, Kyla Hockley ‘96 - giving the student body quite the surprise and laugh.

With a heightened sense of excitement and school spirit, the student body exited the school to enjoy a beautiful day for Field Day at Rossmere Stadium. At field day, students had the opportunity to hang outside and participate in outdoor games such as volleyball and corn hole, while enjoying food from the concession stand, Souvlaki Boys food truck, and Penny’s ice cream truck. As the boys were enjoying the day, the girls at LCHS were preparing for the Annual Powder Puff football tournament which takes place every year on Field Day. As anticipated, the senior team defeated the freshman with a shutout score of 21-0 and the junior team beat the sophomores by a score of 14-7 on a touchdown as time expired. With the referees on their side, the seniors, led by quarterback Corina Rivera, won the championship showdown against the junior class.
MONTHLY Feature After a great day at Rossmere Stadium, the bell rang to send kids home for school. Unlike most other days, the students couldn’t wait to return to school that night for the Homecoming football game and last game that would be played at Rossmere Stadium. The stadium began to fill with gold shirts as parents, family, friends, fans, and “Crusader Crazies” began to find their seats for this historic game. Motivated by tradition and to win their last game at Rossmere Stadium, the Crusaders jumped out to a quick lead after cruising down the field on their first 90-yard drive and scoring the first touchdown of the game. Lancaster Catholic found the end zone four more times before the end of the half, giving them a 35-0 lead. This paved the way for the half time show performed by the Lancaster Catholic Marching Band and Color

The Homecoming Court, voted by the senior class, included BeAnna Bechtold, Kylie Blew, Helen Cao, Emily Eichenlaub, Sydney Ernst, Lillian Fritz, Sarah Heise, Sara Kashatus, Zoe Knafelc and Fayra Molina. With much anticipation from the Court and the student body, the announcement came from the press box that Fayra Molina would be Lancaster Catholic’s 2016 Homecoming Queen. The Crusaders took the field once again to play their final minutes at Rossmere Stadium. Remembering all the games they’ve played under the dim lights and on the weathered grass of Rossmere Stadium, the Crusaders were determined to put a complete Catholic Highlights | 9

Senior quarterback, Brian Downey, displayed a stellar performance by completing 13 of his 17 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Downey also rushed for 59 yards and three touchdowns on top of catching a pass for a 61-yard touchdown on a trick play in the 2nd quarter, leading his team to a key Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three win.

The students celebrated Friday night into the weekend as they gathered the following day for the Homecoming Dance in Berger Gym. The euphoria of victory, mixed with a small amount reminiscence, remained in the air for weeks to come as we remember Lancaster Catholic High School’s 2016 Homecoming and the final game played at Rossmere Stadium.

IN THE News A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE In April, 2016, Lancaster Catholic High School launched the most ambitious campaign in the history of the school called Mission-Passion-Vision: The Campaign for Lancaster Catholic. The campaign objective is a $4,200,000, comprehensive “makeover” of our stadium at Rossmere. You may ask: ‘Why are we rebuilding the stadium with so many other renovations needed in the School building?’ The answer is this: On December 5, 2013 the Firm of Providence Engineering released its report on the rapidly deteriorating condition of the stadium which stated: “…the strength of the bleachers to handle gravity loads is marginal or suspect at best… the main center section of the north bleacher is not adequate for current code…the structures would not meet load requirements of current code…” The report concluded with a long list of repairs/replacements required within 5 years to make the stadium safe. That was 3 years ago. In short, the stadium needs to be completely overhauled—now—to be made safe.
16 | Catholic Highlights
This campaign will fund those needed renovations, and restore our stadium at Rossmere to the safe, completely functional facility it has been for over 50 years. Since the campaign was announced in April, we have been overwhelmed by the number of alumni, parents and friends asking to make a gift to the campaign. We hope you will join them by supporting our campaign today!
IN THE News Last Call to Host Our Japanese Students Last Call to Host Our Japanese Students! This December, Lancaster Catholic High School will welcome around 100 high school-aged boys from Hakodate LaSalle Catholic School located in Japan. Taking place the week of December 9th-December 17th, this will be LaSalle’s fourth visit to Lancaster Catholic. We need your help to make this a successful experience for LaSalle students and our students! We still need to secure 14 host families by the end of the month! During the week, the Japanese students will be shadowing classes with LCHS students. All students will have the opportunity to interact and learn about the Japanese culture and education. Students who are interested in having a “school buddy” for that week should contact Mrs. Anne Weiss in Room 210 or at aweiss@lchsyes.org. We also need host families to volunteer to host two boys for their week stay. This is an exciting chance to practice hospitality, make new friends, and have an undoubtedly fun time! Because it will be during the Christmas season, it’s easy to include
the Japanese boys in activities such as decorating the Christmas tree, attending sporting events, going to church, wrapping gifts, or making cookies. • Host families will receive $198 to host two boys for the week. • The Japanese boys can take the school bus with LCHS students. • Small homes are fine - the boys are able to share rooms/bathrooms with your LCHS child. All host families will have to complete a background check. If you are interested, we need your help! Parents or students who are interested in hosting, please contact Laura Heller by emailing her at urbanheller@gmail.com or calling (312) 925-0841.
