Lancaster Catholic High School Crusader Connection November 12, 2020
Cherish Love Honor: A Campaign for Lancaster Catholic Today, a monumental announcement was made that will impact the entire Lancaster Catholic community; a public announcement of the capital campaign in support of a $12.7 million initiative that will transform the lives of current and future Crusaders. The campaign calls for Lancaster Catholic to take its place among the nation’s premier Catholic schools by completely transforming our cherished building to enhance the student experience and learning environment by creating attractive spaces for learning. Elements of Phase 1 include a Fine & Performing Arts Center and Catholic Student Life Center, with a Student Commons and Dining Hall, as well as a STEM Innovation Center. President Tim Hamer proudly announced that, through behind the scenes efforts that began in 2019, the campaign currently has $8.75 million in commitments! With this amazing news, Lancaster Catholic will begin Phase 1A of our Campus Master Plan this summer, when construction of the new STEM Innovation Center begins. LCHS will re-purpose the second floor of Reilly Hall into a state-of-the-art science and technology center. Although this has been a very successful campaign so far, we need the support of many to reach the most ambitious goal in school history. We ask that you keep our mission and the success of Cherish • Love • Honor in your daily prayers. To learn more about our campaign, visit www.cherishlovehonor.com.
A Sea of Blue Lancaster Catholic partook in its annual Sea of Blue celebration on Wednesday, November 11th in honor of Veterans Day. For a small donation, students, faculty & staff, were allowed to dress down in their favorite shades of blue. The donations benefit a local non-profit, Veterans’ Victory House and their mission to provide veterans experiencing homelessness with an opportunity to develop an individualized housing plan that will enable them to obtain permanent, sustainable housing. Donations will also be sent to a local Veterans’ group. A Blue Mass was also celebrated at Catholic High on Wednesday in honor those who served or are currently serving our nation. We also honored our recent graduates who are in military academies.

A Message from Lancaster Catholic High School COVID Response Coordinator: Leslie Aikens COVID-19: Terms we should know Since the new coronavirus and COVID-19, the illness it causes, are spreading through the communities in the United States and other countries, phrases such as “physical distancing,” “self-quarantine”, “isolating” and “contact tracing” are being used in the media and within our community. It is important to understand the meaning behind these terms to help reduce the confusion and misunderstanding that may occur. WHAT IS PHYSICAL DISTANCING We have been encouraged to practice Social Distancing during the pandemic, which means staying home and away from others to help prevent the spread of the virus. As communities reopen and people are more often in public we started to use the term physical distancing which is being used to reinforce the need to stay 6 feet away from others, as well as wearing a face mask. WHAT IS SELF-QUARANTINE This is for people who have been exposed to the coronavirus and are at risk for coming down with COVID-19. Currently health experts recommend that the individual should self-quarantine for 14 days. The period of 2 weeks provides enough time to know whether the individual will become ill and be contagious to other people. You may be required to self-quarantine if you recently returned from travel to an area of the country or world where the COVID-19 is spreading rapidly, or if you have knowingly been exposed to an infected person. COVID-19 Terms Continued What does it mean to quarantine: • • • • •
Performing standard hygiene and washing hands frequently Not sharing things like towels and utensils Staying at home Not having visitors Staying 6 feet away from other people in your household
The quarantine period begins the last day of exposure to the individual who has tested positive to COVID. If a person in your household receives a positive COVID test, they are considered contagious for 10 days, this begins 2 days before their symptoms or if they are asymptomatic it begins the day the COVID test was done. When the 10 days is complete, that is when the 14 day quarantine begins due to the incubation time of the virus. Incubation is the time between when someone is infected with the virus and when they show symptoms. The incubation period for COVID-19 is 3 – 14 days with the average being 5-6 days. Although newly infected people may not have symptoms during the incubation period they could still transmit the virus to others hence the need to self-quarantine. WHAT IS ISOLATION When a person is confirmed positive to COVID-19, isolation is appropriate. Isolation is a healthcare term that means keeping a person with a contagious illness away from other people who are not infected. Isolation can be done at home, in a healthcare facility or a care facility. WHAT IS CONTACT TRACING The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines contact tracing as “part of the process of supporting patients and warning contacts of exposure in order to stop chains of transmission.” Contact tracing has been a part of the public health process for decades to slow down and contain the transmission of tuberculosis, sexually transmitted disease and other illnesses. Continue to next page
COVID-19 Terms Continued Contact tracing can: • Break the chain of transmission in contagious disease outbreaks • Prevent local surges in sick people that can overwhelm resources and hospitals • Hasten the ability of communities to safely reopen schools, businesses, and public areas. When a student tests positive for COVID-19 the contact tracer will call and speak with the parent and encourage the student to self-isolate. Questions are asked to determine if the student was in class and participating in extra-curricular activities during the period the student would have been contagious. The contact information is evaluated for low to high risk exposure. The students who would be considered high risk exposure are then contacted and asked to quarantine for 14 days due to the exposure. Putting this all together can lessen the Coronavirus impact! The Coronavirus pandemic is making us all aware of hand washing and protecting others from coughs and sneezes. Along with those essential steps, practices such as social distancing and physical distancing, and self-quarantine, isolation when appropriate and contact tracing can slow the rate of infection in a city, town or community. The pandemic can seem overwhelming, but in truth, each person can help slow down the spread of COVID-19. By doing your part, you can make a big difference to your health, and those around you.
School Counseling Corner What to do if your child is failing There are many reasons why a student fails a class: they are not ready for the level of work, they have low tests grades, they are not handing in any homework, etc. The National Honor Society at Lancaster Catholic High School offers peer tutoring during the school day. Students may reach out their School Counselor or Mrs. Leonard (cleonard@lchsyes.org) or Mrs. Lopez (mlopez@lchsyes.org) to be connected with a tutor. Teachers will be able to answer specific questions regarding their courses and Rediker contains up to date information on assignments and grades. PSAT Now Being Offered in January PSAT now being offered for January - we are offering a limited number of students the opportunity to take the PSAT if they missed the October administration. An email was sent out this week to all students and parents of sophomores and juniors regarding registration for this testing opportunity. Students may not take this test if they took the PSAT in October. FAFSA Tutorial Completing the FAFSA for the first time with your senior? Here’s a brief tutorial that can help: https://youtu.be/fz9j-g1FIHQ Eligibility Parents and students are strongly encouraged to keep checking students’ grades on Rediker. Friday morning eligibility is run and any students who are not passing 4 full credits will not be eligible to participate in sports, clubs and activities. Additionally, if students are not passing 4 full credits at the end of a quarter, they will not be able to participate in sports or activities for 15 days!
