A Message from Lancaster Catholic High School COVID Response Coordinator: Leslie Aikens God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Let us find wisdom and comfort in this prayer. As the surge of COVID-19 positive cases rise in Lancaster County, the feeling of anxiety for some is rising as well. What can we do about this? Each of us can do the right thing about preventing the spread of COVID, the public health measures such as wearing a mask, social distancing, washing hands frequently and if you travel outside of PA you quarantine as needed. We cannot change what is happening in our community, in the words above “courage to change the things I can in my mind refers to doing what is best to protect yourself and your loved ones. Here are some coping strategies from Joseph McGuire, Ph. D. , M.A. , a child psychologist with John Hopkins University, https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/ health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/stressed-about-covid19-hereswhat-can-help

Fall Athletics Wrap-Up & Winter Preview A letter from LCHS Athletic Director: Rich Hinnenkamp Crusader Families – well, we made it though the fall season and accomplished many things along the way! I need to thank the fall coaches and players who worked extra hard to make this season happen. We learned a lot about ourselves and what we can endure; we grew through our play and earned some section titles along the way. It was a full season with competitions almost daily, but I am thrilled that we were able to complete the season without shutdowns. Thank you all! Fall Accomplishments and All Stars can be found in this Crusader Connection. Congratulations to the teams who won championships and the players and coaches who garnered All-Star recognition. As we enter into the winter season, we are again faced with hurdles that must be overcome in order to finish our winter season. We left last year with unfinished business from a number of winter teams, and we do not want this season to end the same way. There is only one way we can accomplish this – follow the necessary rules. Masks are vital now that we move inside. Social distancing is also vital. If all players and coaches do this the right way, we can end the season with the chance for Gold Banners on our walls and not sour tastes in our mouths. Part of doing this the right way is making sure when we are not in school, we are smart away from school. COVID has shown to be spread most often away from the school setting and away from sports. It is VITAL that we are smart on weekends and during the holidays. When you visit others, be smart. Stay away from large groups of friends hanging out in small areas. Wear a mask when you are with large groups. Just be smart and stay safe. If you are feeling ill in any way that could be COVID – stay away until you are feeling better. Going to practice sick is not going to help anyone. One of the rules of the winter – and also a new PIAA rule – is that players on high school teams can ONLY compete with their high school team. No practices or competitions with club teams or out of season sports. That is the rule. You have the option of doing just high school sports or just club sports, but not both. One of the reason for this to keep our bubbles as tight as possible. This worked in the fall and needs to be followed in the winter.
Fall Athletics Wrap-Up & Winter Preview Continued There are some changes to the league schedule that I am working on now. Junior High sports will not start practice until December 10th. League play for all teams will not start until January, although non-league contests can start earlier. Some Varsity teams will move the start of practice until after the Thanksgiving break. Those coaches will communicate that to their players. Swimming and Bowling will start practices on December 1st. Basketball and Wrestling will begin on tomorrow, November 20th. Parents – the winter will be different to manage than the fall. Many teams will allow very limited visitor tickets or no visiting spectators. At most, we may be lucky to get 2 parents to away contests. At the end of the fall, we had issues at a game that unfortunately has caused our school’s spectators to be banned for the rest of this year. Unfortunately, this affects parents on our teams that had nothing to do with the situation. Let me be clear – the rules of the away schools MUST be followed at all times. If this can’t be done, do not attend the contest. The rules at home MUST also be followed at all times. One rule that EVERY school – including ours – will have this winter is that masks must be worn at all times. This will include while you are in the bleachers. PLEASE respect this rule and represent our school the proper way. We will most likely use the ticket system that we used in the fall. The parents for each sport will have a chance to buy a season ticket for that sport only. This will be used for home and away contests. I need to make sure of away team rules before I make the final decision on how best to do this. I will follow up with more details. Winter COVID rules pertaining to athletics are being finalized now and should be on the athletic page of the school website by the beginning of next week. Again, thank you to everyone who made the fall a success and thank you ahead to everyone that will make the winter season a success.
