A Message from Lancaster Catholic High School COVID Response Coordinator: Leslie Aikens I want to begin by thanking everyone for your due diligence in helping keep our students, staff and families safe during these unprecedented times. Unfortunately, we continue to hear the number of positive COVID-19 cases are rising in the state. The blueprint for controlling the COVID-19 pandemic has been evident in other countries for months: “masks, distancing, no large gatherings,” as Tom Inglesby, MD, Director, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. We need to stay diligent in all these areas in the days and months ahead. We know the year 2020 has been a whirlwind for parents. And now we have holiday gatherings coming up and decisions to make about the gatherings. Epidemiologists warn families to move forward with caution as the US case numbers climb toward a third peak. Eric Toner, MD, Senior Scientist, Environmental Health and Engineering, says “we’re going to see this roller coaster effect. Cases go up, cases go down.” As a result, he says it’s helpful for parents to plan for all possible scenarios. He also cautioned people to fight “pandemic fatigue,” explaining, “the reason we’re seeing increasing cases now is because we’ve relaxed those containment measures. Those places that somehow think they’re immune to the virus will see big spikes.” Click here for the Here is a link from John Hopkins School of Public Health Insights to help in your decision-making over the holidays. A reminder to those planning to travel to an area where there are high amounts of COVID-19 cases, it is REQUIRED by the Diocese that you stay at home for 14 days upon return to Pennsylvania. The quarantine applies to the following states: • Alabama • Alaska • Arkansas • Florida • Idaho • Illinois • Indiana • Iowa • Kansas
• Kentucky • Minnesota • Mississippi • Missouri • Montana • Nebraska • Nevada • North Carolina • North Dakota
• Oklahoma • South Carolina • South Dakota • Tennessee • Utah • Wisconsin • Wyoming
Working together to keep our Community safe and healthy over the holidays and months ahead.
School Counseling Corner PSAT Now Being Offered in January PSAT now being offered for January - we are offering a limited number of students the opportunity to take the PSAT if they missed the October administration. An email was sent out this week to all students and parents of sophomores and juniors regarding registration for this testing opportunity. Students may not take this test if they took the PSAT in October. College Applications With November 1st arriving on Sunday, we are seeing many seniors who are scrambling to request letters of recommendation and send in their applications to meet early action and early decision deadlines. Naviance is very important in this process and while we have encouraged all seniors to explore this tool, we must remind seniors that this is the only way to have their transcript sent to colleges and universities. FAFSA Tutorial Completing the FAFSA for the first time with your senior? Here’s a brief tutorial that can help: https://youtu.be/fz9j-g1FIHQ Eligibility Parents and students are strongly encouraged to keep checking students’ grades on Rediker. Friday morning eligibility is run and any students who are not passing 4 full credits will not be eligible to participate in sports, clubs and activities. Tutoring & Math Help We are pleased to offer students math assistance again this year from Mr. Longenecker. Mr. “L” is a retired teacher from Lancaster Catholic and has helped many students with their math concerns. Mr. “L” reached at ned.longenecker@gmail.com for virtual or in-person assistance. Tancy Wenrich (Class of 2016) has also offered to assist students with math, her email: tancy.wenrich@gmail.com. National Honor Society is also offering peer tutoring during the school day. Please see Mrs. Leonard, Mrs. Lopez or a School Counselor for more information. Please see next page for more information!
School Counseling Corner College Visits Most colleges and universities are offering virtual visits for seniors and juniors. Students all have Naviance Accounts and they may sign up for virtual visits with college admissions representatives only through Naviance. The School Counselors will send a pass to the student through email with a link to attend the visit. Unfortunately, students will not be able to sign up on the day of the visit so they are expected to view the list of colleges in Naviance and make their plans early.

Summer Reading = Free Candy! Are you over The Portrait of Dorian Gray? Never want to read another book about talking bunnies (Watership Down)? Need to share responsibility for My Antonia with someone? Or want to say A Farewell to Arms? The Library will accept all of your completed summer reading books, and give you a piece of candy for each book you donate! Parents, feel free to donate any classic book to the Library—clean out your own college holdouts! Please send your books in with your students, or let the Librarian, Mrs. Lopez (mlopez@lchsyes.org), know when you would like to bring them in, and she will meet you at the school door.
