School Counseling Corner We are here for you! As School Counselors across the country are beginning their programs, the unrest and turmoil outside our doors is palpable. Please encourage your students to talk about this with you or a trusted School Counselor or professional. Seniors and Parents of Seniors Start your engines as the FAFSA financial process is almost ready to begin! Our contact at the state level, Sonya McFarland, has been a fantastic resource and has provided a brief tutorial on getting started with a simple first step: your FSA ID. Youth Foundations Bible Challenge! Each youth is matched with a mentoring Resident!
Youth Foundations is a Bible teaching, multigenerational, mentoring effort. Calvary Homes’ residents serve key mentoring roles as adopting grandparents. Today we feature an interview with three Calvary Homes’ adopting grandparents, Carl Bowser, Allan Rogers, and Lois Yost. What is your overall response to this unique opportunity? I think it is a very good opportunity for me as a senior to share with the younger generation. (Carl) Carl and Isaiah
What do you hope to contribute? I hope to share how God has helped me through my life and how it is good to know the Lord at a young age. (Allan)
Markell and Allan
During the pandemic lock-down, how have you continued connections? Well, we make telephone calls and write letters. I am interested not only in her, but how she interacts with her family. I keep Delia’s picture on my wall to remember to pray for her. I am sending her the cutest card for her birthday on Sunday. (Lois) Lois and Delia
Do you have further comments? Markell shares his prayer requests and I pray for him. We look forward to meeting together. (Allan)
Chaplain Brown, Carl, Markell, Isaiah and Allan
Please remember Youth Foundations in your prayers.
My main concern is that the youth know the Lord Jesus. (Lois) Being a senior who has served the Lord many years, I want to share what I have learned with the youth! (Carl)
Clarification for Remote Learning As we move into the third week of school and blended learning, we would like to clarify several issues: Most important, students MAY NOT randomly change their selected option (in-person or remote). We understand that there are reasons an in-person learner may need to be remote for a few days: general illness, injury, waiting for test results, or quarantining. If that is the case, the following procedure should be followed: • A parent must call or email the attendance office to ensure that LCHS is aware their student needs to learn remotely for a few days. (The attendance officer will notify the school counselor as well.) • Students should reach out individually to their teachers as well, to make sure teachers are aware of the short term change. • TESTING: If an in-person student suddenly needs to learn remotely for one of the reasons listed above, and they have a test, the student will make up the test in person when they return. For all remote learners, whether it is a permanent option, or only for a few days, the following rules apply: • Students must be on time for class, (including homeroom) and remain in the class for the entire period. • Students must be fully visible on camera (entire face). • Students must be in LCHS approved casual dress. (This includes no facial hair for young men.) • Students should be in a quiet place, at a desk or table preferably. For more information and updates regarding remote learning instructions, please visit the COVID-19 HQ on Lancaster Catholic’s website.
COVID-19 Attendance Policy By definition, the blended learning environment means that a student will attend classes according to their official LCHS schedule, including Homeroom and Crusader Periods. In accordance with the LCHS Student Handbook, teachers will take attendance at the beginning of each class, including Homeroom and Crusader Periods. Consequences for late and absent students continue to apply. Parent/medical notes will continue to be required per LCHS policies. • ALL students are expected to show up for EACH scheduled class ON TIME. This includes students in the distance learning environment. When learning remotely, the environment should be a quiet place, with as little noise as possible. Students should be properly and completely clothed. No inappropriate references of any kind should be visible on clothing or on camera. All students learning remotely should refer to the “casual dress policy” in the LCHS Handbook. • All students are expected to attend Crusader Periods and use this time for make-up tests, tutoring, counselor visits and club activities. • Eligibility for athletics and extracurricular activities remain unchanged, per the LCHS Student Handbook. • In an effort to limit the total number of people in the building each day, we are instituting “Student Privilege” instead of “Senior Privilege”. Any student, regardless of grade level, who has a first period Study Hall may come to school late, but in time for the Homeroom period. In addition, any student, regardless of grade level, who has a last period Study Hall may leave early. (The exception is if a student athlete has an early dismissal for a game/match. They must remain until the scheduled athletic dismissal.) • To support this new adjustment to the schedule, homeroom will now be AFTER 1st period. Students will begin the day in their first period class. For students learning remotely and are absent for the day, the following procedure must be followed. • Upon returning (remotely) from an absence, a parent note must be emailed to the attendance officer, Mrs. Katie Fritz at kfritz@lchsyes.org within three (3) days of the absence. • The email address must be from a parent email the school has on file. Attendance excuse emails will only be accepted for students who are learning remotely. Attendance excuse emails will NOT be accepted from students who are learning in person. Those students must bring in an excuse note from a parent and turn in to the attendance office.
