Letters to the editor Enrollment article was misleading The April 13 article “Private struggle” presents an incomplete and misleading picture of the enrollment trend at Lancaster Catholic High School. Here, as columnist Paul Harvey so famously intoned, is the rest of the story. While it is true that enrollment at Lancaster Catholic is lower than it was in 2008, the number of enrolled students actually increased in each of the last four years of the span covered in the article. Therefore, declining enrollment at Lancaster Catholic is, like the Great Recession of 2008, old news. Curiously, while the reporter mentioned that Lancaster Catholic has “intensified its marketing efforts to attract more students,” there was no mention of the results of those efforts. In fact, programs like “Welcome Wednesdays” and “Shadow Days,” along with much more robust digital outreach, produced increases in enrollment at Lancaster Catholic during fully 40% of the time frame chronicled. Having supplied the reporter with details of these programs along with the four straight years of increased enrollment they produced, the omission of the impact data is mystifying. Thus the only “transformation” occurring at Lancaster Catholic High School is the ongoing program, exemplified by the newly completed $5 million replacement for Rossmere Stadium funded entirely by contributions, to ensure that the next four generations of Lancaster Catholic students are as well prepared as their predecessors to serve as leaders in every field of endeavor in Lancaster County and beyond.
