Resurrection Principal to Retire Resurrection Catholic School Principal Brenda Weaver has announced her retirement after 45 years in Catholic education. A Lancaster native, Weaver attended St. Anne School and Lancaster Catholic High School before choosing education as a career. “I was naturally pulled to Catholic education because my parents instilled in me a love for my faith and learning,” she said. Weaver earned a master’s degree in education from Millersville University in 1977 and a bachelor’s from York College in 1973. She began teaching at Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Ephrata. In 29 years there, she taught third, fourth, fifth grades, sixth grade Language Arts and second grade religion. “Each day was a new adventure,” Weaver said. She fondly remembers teaching social studies and math, but she also recalls the laughter that came many days like when she and students celebrated Thanksgiving feasts with hot dogs, and heart-wrenching days like the time she sat on the floor in the hallway with a child who needed to be held. When she moved into school administration, she embraced the chance to work in the city. “I felt I was returning to my roots,” she said. She served two years as assistant principal at Resurrection and took over as principal after the incumbent died suddenly. She’s been principal there 14 years. Her biggest reward came from hundreds of smiles and hugs from members of the school family, truly, she said, “the greatest joy of my life.” Anyone who knows her will tell you Weaver refers to students as “my kids.” She believes the job requires such a bond. “If you love the kids, respect their cultures, have a passion teach and a calling to pass on the Catholic faith, please apply for the position.”

School Counseling Corner Building the Ideal Schedule These past few weeks in the School Counseling Office have been very busy. Students have been seeing us about their course selections for next year and lots of great conversations have been transpiring. That being said, a lot of difficult discussions have ensued as well. Parents, what happens when your child is reaching for levels that they just are not ready for? When a student is looking to pursue a specific career but they have not demonstrated proficiency in that area, then what? The role of the School Counselor has become less about advice and more about a realistic next step; a plan. We have all heard stories of the Guidance Counselor who told their students they were not good enough for college or they wouldn’t amount to anything. Even the former first lady, Michelle Obama had a college counselor that told her she didn’t think she was“Princeton material”; wow, was she wrong! Our role with your sons and daughters is to try to point out their strengths, not their deficiencies and how those strengths might correspond to career opportunities. If they don’t demonstrate strength in a particular area, they may wish to expand their choices or be patient and work toward that level. What we urge students to do with their course schedules is select challenging classes, but not so challenging as to set themselves up for failure. Course selection is a balance that takes into consideration past performance, motivation, determination, skills, and the wisdom (or clairvoyance in many cases) to understand how that might play out in the coming year. Where’s the Course Catalog? The 2019-20 Course Catalog is on the LCHS website. From the home page, if you click on Student tab (in the middle of the page) or Parent tab (on the left side under the picture), you will see the catalog. You can also access the Course Catalog under the Academics tab as well. I missed school this week, what do I do about my Course Selection Form? Between the stomach virus and the second wave of flu, it’s been a terrible week for some students (and parents). Students may return their course forms as soon as they are complete and as soon as they are back in school to their homeroom teachers. Please don’t worry that it’s late-we understand!
