Taking on the Kennedy Center Stage On a normal day, the mail is a mix of bills, advertisements and magazines; but on an extraordinary day, the mail can contain an opportunity to impact or change a life. Through an unsolicited letter and invitation, Lancaster Catholic sophomore, Cody McSherry, discovered that the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. wanted him to perform on Tuesday, November 20th at 6 PM on the Millennium Stage. Since the age of six, Cody has been playing the accordion with the support of his family. “My family has always been deeply rooted in music,” said McSherry. “I am most excited to share the instrument and the music it can make at the Kennedy Center and help break the stigma around the accordion.” Cody is no stranger to performing since he formed a German fest music band, Polterabend, three years ago. Cody is also a former Lancaster’s Got Talent competition winner held by Lancaster Newspapers and is a two-time winner of the Carmen Carrozza Scholarship, junior division, held by the American Accordionists Association. Additionally, Cody has also won numerous awards at American Accordionists Association festivals and the Leavenworth International Accordion Festival. Cody’s performance at the Kennedy Center will have a large selection of music featuring modern, classic and folk pieces. His performance is from 6 to 7 p.m. and will be live streamed via the Kennedy Center website. Tickets to the show are free but the Kennedy Center does tend to fill up, if planning to travel to DC. The performance will be broadcasted and archived at www.kennedy-center.org.

School Counseling Corner: Timely Tips from your School Counselors Seniors - at this point, we have over 62% of seniors who have submitted college applications. We realize that not every senior will want to apply to college, however, with Thanksgiving Break coming up next week, the School Counselors want to remind students that no transcripts or college applications will be processed from 3:00 PM November 20 through 8:00 AM November 27, 2018. Please plan accordingly! General Student Well Being - The National Catholic School Education newsletter recently featured an article regarding anxiety and how that sometimes relates to perfectionism among teenagers. Although this may sound counter intuitive, teens worry that they can’t keep up with their peers, they are sub-par when it comes to handing in assignments and at times, perfectionism can be reinforced by religious beliefs “being perfect just like our heavenly Father” (Petitfils, 2018). The winter months can also present challenges for students due to lack of sunlight such as depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder. If you are noticing behaviors in your child that are interfering in their academic, spiritual or social life, please contact School Counseling for resources. If you would like a copy of the NCEA newsletter article about perfectionism, please email jgrosh@lchsyes.org. Freshmen Meetings - Now that the first quarter is over, the School Counselors are meeting with their freshmen. So far we are very pleased that the freshmen are open to these meetings and providing us with helpful information. During these meeting expect that the School Counselors are getting to know your child, going over academic issues and goal setting. If you have any questions regarding these meetings, please reach out to your child’s School Counselor.
