How To Help Children Be Grateful All Year by Shauna King

I recall being told as a child to say thank you, to count my blessings, and that I should be grateful for my lima beans because there were “starving children who would love to have them.” Since Thanksgiving is around the corner, admonishments such as these will increase with the overall goal of helping children to be more grateful. The truth is, however, that gratitude should not only be a seasonal expression. It is something we should demonstrate all year long and not just when the holiday is creeping closer. Knowing how important gratitude is, here are five practical ways to help children be more grateful for what they have and who they are. 1. Model Gratitude You can’t pour from an empty cup – that’s why it’s important to express gratitude yourself through gifts, words, and actions. When we demonstrate gratitude to our co-workers, family members or even our fellow driver on the road, we model for our children the value of this essential emotional response. 2. Help Children Find What Matters The best gratitude comes from a sense of relating to the “bigger picture.” Ask children what social issues they care about, so you can help them find purpose and meaning in the world. Encourage children to pick a favorite charity or help them choose one that suits what they are passionate about. Allow them to hold a fundraiser, donate money, or spread awareness. It involves a gentle push in the right direction so that they can learn more about what they find important. 3. Start A Gratitude Journal Blogs, drawings, videos, collages, etc. can all be a form of journaling. Documenting our emotions can be an incredibly therapeutic and valuable asset to understanding ourselves. To help kids understand and show gratitude, start asking them to record one or two things they were grateful for that day. They can be small things, like sleeping in or eating their favorite dinner. Over time, the list will grow and there will be a tangible reminder of the many things that they have to be grateful for. This activity can help to relieve stress and to reframe negative situations. 4. Delegate Responsibility Children are - most of the time - just oblivious to the work it takes behind the scenes of any home, organization, classroom, or event. All it takes for them to show gratitude is to make them aware of the effort that goes into something. One way to showcase this is to give responsibility and allow children to take on tasks. Not only will they feel good from getting to help, but they will also open their eyes to the amount of effort that a teacher, parent or coach puts in each day. 5. Cue Grateful Responses When we see children feeling appreciative and grateful, we can cue them the appropriate responses of appreciation. For example, we may tell them that a hug is okay if they feel like it, or a handshake, or a thank you. Helping a child write thank you notes can also help them to understand the many ways we can show our appreciation towards others.

School Counseling Corner: Timely Tips from your School Counselors Seniors - at this point, we have over 62% of seniors who have submitted college applications. We realize that not every senior will want to apply to college, however, with Thanksgiving Break coming up next week, the School Counselors want to remind students that no transcripts or college applications will be processed from 3:00 PM November 20 through 8:00 AM November 27, 2018. Please plan accordingly! General Student Well Being - The National Catholic School Education newsletter recently featured an article regarding anxiety and how that sometimes relates to perfectionism among teenagers. Although this may sound counter intuitive, teens worry that they can’t keep up with their peers, they are sub-par when it comes to handing in assignments and at times, perfectionism can be reinforced by religious beliefs “being perfect just like our heavenly Father” (Petitfils, 2018). The winter months can also present challenges for students due to lack of sunlight such as depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder. If you are noticing behaviors in your child that are interfering in their academic, spiritual or social life, please contact School Counseling for resources. If you would like a copy of the NCEA newsletter article about perfectionism, please email jgrosh@lchsyes.org. Freshmen Meetings - Now that the first quarter is over, the School Counselors are meeting with their freshmen. So far we are very pleased that the freshmen are open to these meetings and providing us with helpful information. During these meeting expect that the School Counselors are getting to know your child, going over academic issues and goal setting. If you have any questions regarding these meetings, please reach out to your child’s School Counselor.
