Summer Lifeguard Positions Open Thanks to the Emerald Foundation & the Besecker family, the Crusaders will have a safer experience in 2020. Lancaster Catholic has partnered up with Defend Your Head in cooperation with the Emerald Foundation to help make football safer in 2020. Thanks to funding from the Besecker family, the Crusaders will have Defend Your Head’s innovative ProTech helmet covers for the upcoming season, giving each student-athlete better head protection that reduces collision force by as much as 72 percent. Joe ‘75 and Martha Besecker made a connection with John Zeglinski, Defend Your Head’s Sr. Vice President of National Business Development, to bring the ProTech technology to Lancaster County. ProTech’s patented technology has been proven to absorb and dissipate energy for the reduction of injury due to blunt force trauma. A three-year independent study by Penn State University concluded that Defend Your Head’s technology was the primary factor in reducing traumatic head impacts to Nittany Lion players. In addition to Penn State, more than 10,000 football players are wearing ProTechs, including student-athletes at Penn, Temple, Alabama, and Baylor. “We are thrilled to partner with Defend Your Head on this important safety initiative,” said Besecker, Founder, President and CEO of the Emerald Foundation. “Helping make student-athletes at Lancaster Catholic safer playing football is perfectly aligned with our focus on education, youth, health and safety awareness.” “As athletic directors and coaches, we want the safest playing environment possible for our student-athletes. ProTech has been proven to make football safer”, said Rich Hinnenkamp, Lancaster Catholic’s Athletic Director. We are very grateful to Beseckers and look forward to the benefits of this outstanding initiative.” Lancaster Catholic High School will be the first school in the Lancaster-Lebanon League to use the new technology. Partner this innovation with the EDGE system from Reflexion, a company started by alums Matt Campagna ‘15 & Matt Roda ‘15, that every student uses in physical education courses, LCHS is at the forefront of technology when it comes to student-athlete safety. For more information about Defend Your Head, visit www.defendyourhead.com.

New Deadline for Neumann Scholarship- Catholic Witness Families applying for tuition assistance through the Diocese’s Neumann Scholarship Foundation for the 2020-2021 school year are being advised of a new application deadline, March 1. In previous years, the deadline was April 15, coinciding with the tax deadline. Pennsylvania law requires the most recent tax return to determine a family’s qualification for the scholarships, made possible through the state’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit EITC Program. The March 1 deadline allows the schools and the Neumann Scholarship Foundation to receive families’ information in a more timely fashion, and subsequently offers parents more time to make a decision about their enrollment or re-enrollment in a Catholic school. With the advance deadline, families will be asked to provide their most recent tax return and a W-2 for the taxes they’ll file this spring. Daniel Breen, Diocesan Secretary for Education and Superintendent of Schools, said the decision to change the deadline for the Neumann application was made after consultation with school officials, who wanted to “give our families a time frame that works for them for enrollment, and to know the financial picture well in advance of the following school year.” Breen emphasized that the March 1 deadline maximizes a family’s ability to receive a scholarship for the 2020-2021 academic year. After the deadline, funds will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, based on the school. In addition to the new deadline, a second change to the Neumann program is that school officials will have increased involvement in awarding scholarships. Previously, Neumann scholarships were awarded at the Diocesan level in consultation with the schools. Given that school personnel know their families and family situations, and also have additional sources of funding from other scholarship programs, they will now have more discretion in awarding the scholarships.

Remember to submit your Neumann Scholarship Application by March 1st!

What is an item on your bucket list? I’d love to take a glass blowing class

What would be your super power? I would love to know what is going on in my students minds!

Tell us about your family! I am one of six children. My family is crazy, opinionated, loud and some of my very best friends. I have a husband named John (also an ‘07 alum) and a sweet boxer named Luna!

When did you realize you wanted to become an educator?

If you could have any other career, what would it be?

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in 1st grade. My 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Hartman, at Sacred Heart was amazing!

I would love to travel the world eating good food, Anthony Bourdain style.

Reading with a nice cup of coffee.
