Director’s Notes The cast, crew, & production team is thrilled to present our unique version of William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. Our script contains around 80% of the original dialogue in order to keep the production length under 2 hours. Our version brings the story to life in a dystopian future during the Apocalypse. This setting provides a minimalistic backdrop void of technology and rules. We have bent the social rules of Shakespeare’s world by transporting our story into the very distant future. Our version has changed a few of the traditional male roles to female roles to accommodate our talent. We also have dancing witches. Who doesn’t like a dancing witch? We all feel the weight of uncertainty that has held us captive in 2020. We are so grateful that we have the privilege to explore Shakespeare’s great tragedy during in-person rehearsals and perform on our stage in front of a small live audience. We realize that many schools across the country are not providing a fall play opportunity for students this year. We feel truly blessed to be in a school community that recognizes the value of this experience for our students’ academic, social, creative, spiritual and mental well-being. We truly educate the whole child at Lancaster Catholic. We are also excited for this grand inaugural opportunity to share our version of Macbeth with a wider audience through streaming our digital recording. In Macbeth, Shakespeare poses the depth of the human mind and spirit, and morality and immorality of human behavior. He unravels the truth about both the animalistic and humanistic parts of the human mind in planning and designing evil or good actions. He strives to warn his audience and readers about their true responsibilities in this earthly world. Biblical imagery permeates William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy written in 1606 (only 10 years before his death). There is no doubt that religion and religious conflict, entwined with politics, are key themes in Shakespeare’s writing. These reasons could be why the characters and plot of his tragic play, Macbeth, have withstood the test of time and still resonates with modern audiences. One of Shakespeare’s most famous passages in his tragedy from Act V displays the dark inner turmoil and despair of Macbeth’s mind and soul. “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last syllable of recorded time; And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more.
