Glory Denied- Penn Square Music Festival Glory Denied is the acclaimed opera by Tom Cipullo based on the book by Tom Philpott which tells the true story of America’s longest-held prisoner of war. With over 20 productions, the piece is one of the most frequently performed operas of the 21st-century. “It is the true story of an American family torn apart during the unsettling era of the unpopular Vietnam War. Cipullo’s masterfully taut adaption of Tom Philpott’s book of the same name, makes a cogent impression…with a score that is by turns chaotic, angular, melodic, harmonious, and even at times, serene. . . . a thrillingly varied score, mesmerizing libretto, . . .” said James Sohre, of Opera Today on November 23, 2018. Mr. Scott Drackley, former LCHS teacher and current artistic director of Penn Square, will bring four professional opera singers in collaboration with the English Department to enrich the seniors’ study of the Vietnam War Era. Two weeks after standing before the Vietnam Wall on their field trip, students will hear lyrics and music echoing the pain and turmoil of the 1960s-1970s. Students prepared by reading excerpts from Jim Thompson’s biography and will hear songs from the opera as well as engage in a Q&A with Drackley and the singers about their training and preparation. It is an incredible opportunity to fuse history, music, and psychology as all three converge in this remarkable tale. The story has been fittingly labeled an American epic. This free event will be presented on Thursday, October 31, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in Old Main Gym. All are welcome.

Columbus Day Hours On Monday, October 14th, Lancaster Catholic’s Main Office, Business and Advancement Offices will be closing at 1:00 PM. There will be no school that day for the holiday and teachers will be on retreat.

Friday Adoration Each Friday for the last five years Campus Ministry has sponsored Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in our chapel. Our students, teachers and staff have the opportunity to stop in for a few minutes as their schedule permits. Often times theology teachers will bring classes down for a rosary or private prayer. To be able to offer Adoration we have had parent and alumni volunteers who sign up to cover the times from 8AM until 3PM to assure that the chapel is never empty. We are currently in need of new volunteers. We will work with you and your schedule, even if you can only offer part of an hour or can only help twice a month. For more information or to sign up to help please contact Campus Ministry at abamert@lchsyes.org for call us at 717.509.0315.

Teacher Spotlight

Jacqueline Cicchetti Enthusiastic, Positive, Active English Teacher B.A. in English & M. ED. in English

Tell us about your family! What is your favorite thing about Lancaster Catholic? I love my students. They work so hard to do their best for me, and I am very proud of them.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I could magically make all my students read for pleasure!

My three sons all graduated from LCHS. My oldest is a Health & Physical Education teacher/ basketball coach in Elkins Park, Pa. My youngest is a physical therapist in Ken Horst, PA. My middle son passed in 2009 after being an exemplary marine and fighting in Iraq.

What has been the most rewarding part of teaching? I am rewarded by seeing my students grow, mature, and move on to careers where they truly make a difference in the world.

Last book read:

How long have you been a teacher at Lancaster Catholic High School?

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

School Counseling Corner Getting Ready for PSAT Testing on October 16th On testing day, we are asking that all students who have registered for the PSAT arrive on time. Students will be issued their admission tickets in Homeroom on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. Students are required to report to their testing rooms when they arrive at school on Wednesday. In some cases, a student’s homeroom is their testing room, however, all students will see their testing room on their admission ticket. We will begin testing after the bell rings at 8:00 a.m. We are using classrooms on the second floor of the building due to the freshman retreat activities on the lower level and gym. Students are asked to bring several sharpened number 2 pencils --please no mechanical pencils, a calculator with fresh batteries and a positive attitude. Students will have 2 breaks during testing however, they are only 5 minutes long so snacks won’t be necessary. Each classroom will operate independently however unless otherwise notified, most students will be dismissed between 11:45a.m. and 12:00 noon. Parents may pick up their children or they can take their regular bus home at 3:00 p.m. No lunch will be served on testing day so if students are staying all day, they are encouraged to pack a lunch. Late registrations will have their admission tickets emailed on Tuesday, October 15th by the end of the day. If students have any questions about their testing rooms, please contact Mrs. Grosh or on testing day, Mrs. Sharp in the main office. Thank you for helping us make this testing day run as smoothly as possible. Results for m the PSAT will arrive via email from the College Board in early December.
