National Merit Honors One LCHS Crusader was named in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Over 1.5 million students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last fall but only 50,000 students have received recognition for their hard work. Senior Matthew Keebler has been commended for his scores on the PSAT test in recognition of his outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National MeritÂŽ Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Congratulations, Matthew!

Subaru Love Learning On Friday, September 20, Lancaster Catholic High School received 100 brandnew science books from the Subaru Loves Learning initiative. The Subaru Loves Learning (SLL) initiative, which is part of Subaru of America, Inc.’s Love Promise philanthropic platform, partnered with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to donate more than 91,000 award-winning science books to schools across the country since 2015. As part of the automaker’s commitment to education, participating local Subaru retailers work alongside AAAS to provide students and teachers in schools serving kindergarten through twelfth grade with winning and finalist books of the AAAS/ Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books. It was through this program that Lancaster County Motors Subaru was able to donate a diverse array of award-winning books to help bridge the gap and further promote science education at Lancaster Catholic High School. The books that were selected from the winners and finalists of the AAAS/Subaru Prize for Excellence in Science Books, which celebrates outstanding science writing and illustration for children and young adults include:

• Spying on Whales by Nick Pyenson • Rocket Men by Robert Kurson • Dig In by Karl Cornell with Photography by Jennifer S. Larson • Chasing New Horizons by Alan Stern and David Grinspoon • Built by Roma Agrawal

Science Department Chair, Mrs. Anne Bleistine, was thrilled to have been selected to receive the new science books for Catholic High’s classrooms. “These books can provide extra opportunities to interest and motivate students in science topics,” said Bleistine. “From the classroom to science-related clubs, these new books allow students to discover new topics.”

Important News: Taking a Sick Student Home Although we live in a world where most students have a cell phone with them, it is vital that when they are not feeling well that they go to the school nurse. We have discovered a trend where students are texting their parents when they are feeling under the weather and the parent just showing up to come pick them up. If your child is not feeling well, please advise them to visit the school nurse! We do not wish for a medical emergency to happen in a classroom or hallways or not knowing that your child was not feeling well, prior to a parent picking the student up. Thank you!

Men At Work Retreat Over the course of two days nine sophomore young men from LCHS worked under a beautiful blue September sky on the shores of the lake at Mariawald Retreat Center in Shillington, PA. Through the two days they repaired a short trail and built a wooden walking trail around one end of the lake. They painted a railing, cleared flower beds, cleared downed trees as they learned to turn work in to purposeful prayer. The focus of this work based retreat was to begin to give these young men an experience of balancing life skills, they cooked their own dinner and made their lunches and prayer, stropping for mid day rosary and evening and morning prayer. After dinner and quick game of touch football at Camp Kirchenwald they gathered by the fire and talked about how to balance all of these aspects of life as they work to be men of faith, give purpose and meaning to work as more than just a task to be done.
