Rachel’s Challenge- September 10th Rachel’s Challenge will be at LCHS on Tuesday, September 10th for an in-school assembly. All parents are invited to a special evening assembly. The evening assembly will take place in the LCHS Library from 6-7 PM and childcare will be provided. Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Through her example, Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact on the lives of millions of people every year. Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day. Rachel’s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassion, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities. A few weeks after the tragedy, Darrell Scott, Rachel’s father, spoke to a Congressional House Judiciary Committee regarding issues of school violence.

“Rachel’s Challenge is the MOST powerful intervention I have seen in 40 years of working in education.” - Dr. Robert Marzano

Shortly afterwards, he founded “Rachel’s Challenge”, a bullying and violence abatement program. If you have any questions about the event, please contact Ms. Dana Kinsey at dkinsey@lchsyes.org.

Retreat Sign Ups for 2019-20 The initial phase of retreat signups has started and students are excited! As a reminder students have until September 10th to choose their first retreat option. Students who are on the waiting list may choose an additional retreat in the event that there is not enough space available to them. It is important to remember for this year, students online retreat choice is NOT confirmed until they submit a deposit (for retreats that require funds) or stop by and see Mr. Bamert or Ms. Cybulski to make arrangements and confirm their choice. After 3PM on September 10th students who have not submitted a deposit may loose their spot to those on the waiting list. After the 10th students may then choose multiple retreats. See our website https://www.lchsyes.org/apps/pages/retreats for the link to Signup Genius and for all the policies and procedures. Please encourage your students to come and speak to us if they have questions.

Rosary Group at LCHS Please consider joining fellow parents, alums and faculty once a month to pray the rosary for the Lancaster Catholic High School Community. The group will meet one Tuesday a month in the morning. We will start at 7:00 a.m. in the chapel for Mass, then move to Campus Ministry to pray the rosary. We will be using Praying the Rosary Like Never Before: Encounter the Wonder of Heaven and Earth by Edward Sri. The plan is to read a chapter a month and discuss, followed by the recitation of the rosary using reflections from the book. A very kind donor has offered to cover the cost of the books, so if you plan on joining us, please email Mrs. Kathy Alton at kalton@lchsyes.org so she can order a book for you. Books will be distributed at the first meeting. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

School Counseling Corner Next Week Next week brings with it some possible challenges for those students who may be sensitive or anxious. On Tuesday, September 10, Lancaster Catholic will be presenting Rachel’s Challenge, a program discussing a very positive response to a tragic situation: the school shooting at Columbine. On Wednesday, September 11, 2019, a memorial mass is scheduled remembering the victims of 9/11. If you feel that either of these programs may not be in your child’s best interest, please do not hesitate to contact the School Counseling Office. Counselors are always available for students to assist them with these difficult issues.

College Financial Aid Night Parents of seniors are invited to a presentation from Sonya Mann-McFarland from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to learn about college financial aid. Changes to PSAT Registration A letter will be sent out to all parents and students in 10th and 11th grade regarding the new registration procedures for PSAT. The School Counseling Office will no longer be accepting payment for PSAT, but rather, Total Registration will be handling this task for us. We are excited about this new procedure and by early next week, you will be sent a letter instructing you about registration and on line or mail-in payment. We have ordered plenty of tests, however, we will not accept payments after the late deadline. Please keep an eye out for an email from the School Counseling Office.
