The freedom to read should never be taken for granted. To this day reading materials are still being challenged in Canada due to their controversial content. However, some of the most controversial books of all time are now regarded as classics. The Bible, Shakespeare’s works and Alice in Wonderland have all fallen victim to bannings in the past two centuries. Every year, Lambton County Library reaffirms its commitment to intellectual freedom by celebrating Freedom to Read Week, an annual event that is aimed at increasing Canadians’ awareness of books and magazines that have been challenged or removed from libraries, schools and bookstores.

Upcoming

One Book Lambton
The One Book Lambton initiative, which aims to unite people around Lambton County by reading the same book, will enter its fourth year with an intense thriller written by a #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail best selling author.
“Still Life” by Louise Penny introduces Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in this first of eighteen books of this thrilling series, which has also just premiered as an Amazon Prime TV series called “Three Pines”.
“Still Life” by Louise Penny
The discovery of a dead body in the woods on Thanksgiving Weekend brings Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his colleagues from the Sûreté du Québec to a small village in the Eastern Townships. Gamache cannot understand why anyone would want to deliberately kill well-loved artist Jane Neal, especially any of the residents of Three Pines - a place so free from crime it doesn’t even have its own police force.
But Gamache knows that evil is lurking somewhere behind the white picket fences and that, if he watches closely enough, Three Pines will start to give up its dark secrets...
Lambton County Library is encouraging people to read “Still Life” over the months of January and February. Starting in February through April, One Book Lambton will be hosting various programs and events that explore the themes of the book. Books can be borrowed with your Lambton County Library card by visiting your local library, online at lclibrary.ca or by using the Iguana Library app. eBook versions of “Still Life” are available on the Libby app. Books can also be purchased at your local bookstore.

It is 50 years in the future: a series of catastrophic volcanic eruptions has caused the earth to descend into an ice age. The key to the earth’s survival may rest with the research compiled by a scientist who died a decade ago. In order to protect her research from those who would seek to destroy it, she had it locked inside a safe. In case she was not alive when the research was needed, she ordered that her office and the safe be preserved, and she created a series of clues that would lead to the combinations. It is 50 years in the future; a series of catastrophic volcanic eruptions has caused the earth to descend into an ice age. The survival of Earth depends on you. Work fast. Every minute without the research the ice advances south.
