STAY (Safe Travel Accommodation for Youth) WYSE Association is the global forum and trade association for organisations involved in youth travel accommodation. The Association was formed in 2006 by the world’s leading youth travel accommodation providers to represent the entire global Youth Travel Accommodation (YTA) sector. STAY WYSE is the only not-for-profit industry association bringing together the diverse segments of this significant

m u l t i - b i l l i o n d o l l a r i n d u s t r y. T h e association works to provide much needed support and representation for one of the youth travel industry’s fastest growing niche markets. The Association’s mission is to provide safe, affordable and clean accommodation within a communal atmosphere that encourages youth mobility and cultural understanding.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN This past year has been an exciting one for STAY WYSE, and the industry has a whole. The association, building upon the work done in the previous year, continued its steady healthy growth. The STAY WYSE survey results reveal an industry that despite the economic recession continues to grow in scope and scale, with global occupancy rates up, bed rates up and plans for establishment expansion. STAY WYSE launched a new website this year, with an industry news site, which is updated regularly with STAY WYSE news, but also news from around the industry. I urge you all to subscribe to it on www.staywyse.org. The new website has caused visitor numbers to dramatically increase as our news portal grows in recognition. As we recently informed you, the Board is keen to see STAY WYSE develop to the next level with an association built around the four cornerstones of education, networking, research and representation. We look forward to sharing our ideas with you at the AGM and of course are keen to hear your thoughts and feedback. The year ahead is going to be key for STAY WYSE. The board and myself are aware of the challenges, but look forward to delivering value to our membership and growing the representation of the industry.

2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT INDUSTRY RESEARCH For the sixth year running STAY WYSE embarked on a survey of the Youth Travel Accommodation Industry. The Youth Travel Accommodation Industry Benchmark Survey of 2011 looked at average bed rates, occupancy rates, marketing activities, staffing, environmental sustainability initiatives, booking trends and sources of revenue during 2011. In addition, this year we launched our first consumer survey which looked at motivations and behaviours of YTA consumers. The results of which have been used in this year’s report. STAY WYSE would like to thank the members who helped circulate this survey to their customers. We look forward to build upon this survey for future reports.

in the STAY WYSE Survey

Youth Travel Accommodation (YTA) operators around the world were asked to participate in a detailed survey, which was open for the period May to July 2012. Respondents were asked about their business during calendar year 2011. The scale of the survey continues to grow, with a 60% increase in the numbers of establishments represented in this year’s data as compared to that of 2011. The STAY WYSE survey has rapidly become the most comprehensive study of the YTA industry worldwide, and is the only consistent source of benchmarking and comparison by world region, country and for a number of key cities. This reflects the ability of STAY WYSE to reach operators across the YTA as a whole. This work was greatly aided by the support given to the 2012 survey by Hostelworld.com, Hostelling International and HostelBookers, all of whom helped to distribute surveys to the global YTA community and by Backpackers Villa Sonnehof, Hostel One80, Palmers Lodge, Hatters Hostel, Hostelling International and Smart City who distributed to YTA consumers. The STAY WYSE survey has developed into a significant piece of research within the Youth Travel Industry as a whole. As such it has attracted considerable funding this year from sponsors; income from the survey now accounts for two-fifths of STAY WYSE annual income. STAY WYSE would like to thank all the sponsors for their support:
