Macmillan Learning Disability Project in Wales
We know that people with learning disabilities: Have higher levels of ill health than non-disabled peers Often have multiple long-term and very complex health conditions Are growing in number as people live linger But they still die younger than the general population
Cancer and learning disabilities: Issues with late or lack of diagnosis Delays in treatment Higher numbers of digestive and testicular cancers Higher levels of Helicobacter Pylori, a common infection, which can increase cancer risk Uptake of screening much lower than average Families and carers feel unsupported and unskilled in health matters
The project aims to: Improve experiences and outcomes for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers that are affected by cancer Support cancer care services to include and care for people with a learning disability To bridge gaps between primary care, cancer services and learning disability services Produce more robust research into cancer issues
How? Identify and support ‘Learning Disability Champions’ in all areas of health provision Collect and share existing resources Plan and deliver education to people with learning disabilities, their families, and carers in both learning disability and cancer services
