Opening and using a bank account • Banks should not make assumptions. • If a bank does not think you can decide, they must do a mental capacity assessment. • Banks should support you to understand things

• Banks must not discriminate • Banks have to be careful about who opens an account and what information they share. • If you are not happy with something speak to the bank. You can make a complaint if they do not fix the problem. Slide 14

– reasonable adjustments – their specialist disability team – different types of account

– different ways to access and manage money, like: • signature stamp • making a mark instead of a signature

Support from family and friends Your friends and family can support you in different ways: • Joint bank account • Helping you read letters • Helping you pay bills • Helping you visit the bank • Helping you get cash and use your account • Speaking to you about your ideas about managing your money. • Being an appointee, Power of Attorney or Deputy Think about ways to involve them but stay in control. Support from organisations You can also ask an organisation to support you

with your money. They could provide: • Appointeeship (managing your benefits for you)

• Financial advocacy (supporting you to manage your own money) Dosh is an organisation that does this.
