OLyMPiC NATiONAL PArK Recreational opportunities abound in Olympic National Park, which divides Jefferson County into two geographically separate portions: East Jefferson County and the sparsely populated, oceanside West End. The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, although some roads, campgrounds, trails and other visitor facilities close in winter. Emergency situations, including flooding, blow-downs or wildland fire, also may close areas temporarily. Despite intensive work by park crews, damage from a record-breaking December 2007 storm continues to restrict public access to some Olympic National Park areas. A single visit vehicle permit is $15, which allows all persons traveling with the permit holder in one single, private non-commercial vehicle to leave and re-enter the park as many times as they wish during a seven-day period from the date of purchase. The Olympic National Park Annual Pass is $30 and good for one year from month of purchase. A seven-day, $5 permit allows entrance for people on foot or those on horseback, motorcycles or in a vehicle owned by a nonprofit organization. All National Parks passes – Golden Eagle, Golden Eagle Hologram, Golden Access and Golden Age – will continue to be honored according to the provisions of the pass. Only paper Golden Age and Access passes may be exchanged free of charge for a new plastic pass. The America the Beautiful–National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass is $80 and is good for a year beginning from the date of sale. It admits the pass holder plus three adults in a non-commercial vehicle at all per-person fee areas. Children younger than 16 are admitted free. A similar pass for seniors 62 and older is $10; a pass for those with permanent disabilities is free. For information call 888-ASK USGS, ext. 1, or visit http://store.usgs.gov/pass.

The Leader WHO’S WHO

2009

31

E AR S Y 0 2 1

Among the cast of characters that have played an important role in the history of Port Townsend is its newspaper, The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader. As an independent, locally owned newspaper, it’s one of the few newspapers left in Washington - and anywhere else - that isn’t owned by larger corporate interests. In Port Townsend and throughout Jefferson County, Wednesday is known as “Leader day” - the day the weekly paper hits the stands. Locals grab a copy and sit down with their morning coffee to catch up on news about their neighbors. And in The Leader, it’s all local, all the time. Founded in 1889 as one of several competing newspapers in bustling Port Townsend, The Leader is the only paper produced and published solely for the people of the County. The first issue of The Morning Leader

hit the streets on Oct. 2, 1889, and has been in print ever since. Originally a daily, The Leader became a weekly in 1908. Today The Leader is among the largest community newspapers in Washington, with 27 employees and several correspondents and freelance writers. Its circulation is between 8,500 and 9,300, depending on the time of year, and it reaches into up to 80 percent of Jefferson County households. The Leader’s website, www.ptleader.com, is the busiest website in the county, viewed more than 250,000 times per month. The Leader still lives within Enoch Fowler’s sandstone bricks, some of which are showing signs of age. The paper remains as independent as it was the day it started 120 years ago, writing the first draft of the history of this remarkable town and this remarkable county.
