CLARENCE ACOX - DRUMS Clarence Acox Jr., a pivotal figure in the Seattle music scene, has nurtured young musicians for the past 35 years as director of jazz bands at Garfield High School. He leads the renowned Garfield Jazz Ensemble, winning dozens of awards and making regular appearances at national and international venues. Acox co-founded the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra in 1995, and has performed with the Floyd Standifer Quartet at the New Orleans Creole Restaurant for more than two decades. DAN BALMER - GUITAR
Dan Balmer is one of only five Oregonians to be honored with membership in both the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and the Jazz Society of Oregon Hall of Fame. From 2005-2009 Dan toured and recorded with Diane Schuur, playing in more than 15 countries and 60 cities. When not on the road he leads his own groups and continues his long standing gigs with Mel Brown, David Friesen, and others. Dan has appeared on more than 80 CDs, including eight of his own which have received critical acclaim and international airplay. GEORGE CABLES - PIANO George Cables is a significant figure in the jazz scenes of Los Angeles, where he first resided, and San Francisco, where he also lived. Collaborations and recordings with tenor saxophonists Joe Henderson and Sonny Rollins, trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw, and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson made Cables’ wide-ranging keyboard skills, often on electric piano, amply evident. He has performed and recorded with Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Williams, Bobby Hutcherson, and Dizzy Gillespie, among others.
PETE CHRISTLIEB – TENOR SAX Pete Christlieb was introduced to the sounds of jazz through the recordings of Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. At 17, Pete enrolled in the “Greyhound” school of music, hitting the road with the bands of Si Zentner, Woody Herman, Louis Bellson and even a short but delightful tenure with Count Basie. Pete is also well known for his 20 year stint with Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show Band, and for his iconic solo on Steely Dan’s “Deacon Blues.” Today, Pete performs with his own quartet, and with the Bill Holman Orchestra. GERALD CLAYTON - PIANO Gerald Clayton grew up mainly in Los Angeles with a musical family that includes his father, bassist/composer John Clayton, and uncle, saxophonist Jeff Clayton. Gerald has had the honor of performing with Lewis Nash, Al Foster, Terrell Stafford and Clark Terry. From 2006-2008, Gerald toured extensively with Roy Hargrove in his quintet, and is currently a member of the Clayton Brothers Quintet. But it is Gerald’s own trio, based in New York City, which provides him the most direct opportunity to explore and expand his own thoughts in music. The Gerald Clayton Trio released “Bond: The Paris Sessions” in May of 2011. JEFF CLAYTON - ALTO SAX Reed specialist, Jeff Clayton is a versatile performer, bandleader, and studio musician whose diverse recording credits include work with Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Madonna and Earth Wind & Fire. Together with his brother John, he founded the Grammy-nominated Clayton Brothers in 1977, and later co-founded the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra - named by the readers of Downbeat Magazine as the top big band in jazz. In addition, Jeff has performed with numerous artists including Lena Horne, Lionel Hampton, Dr. John, and Ella Fitzgerald. DAWN CLEMENT - PIANO Pianist/Composer Dawn Clement hails from Seattle, WA where she has served on faculty at Cornish College of the Arts since 2000. She is involved in several collaborations including the Jane Ira Bloom Quartet, Priester’s Cue with the legendary Julian Priester, the Seattle Pianist Collective, as well as her own trio. Dawn has performed with such notables as Nancy King, Ingrid Jensen, Hadley Caliman, John Clayton, Mercer Ellington, Mark Dresser, and Pharoah Sanders.

JOHN CLAYTON – BASS, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The former principal bassist with the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, John Clayton was also Artistic Director of Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, toured and recorded with Monty Alexander, and spent two years with the Count Basie Orchestra. It started at age 16 when the young Clayton began his studies with Ray Brown. His impressive resume includes performances and recordings with Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Whitney Houston, McCoy Tyner, Ella Fitzgerald, Yo Yo Ma, and many others. John has been recognized with a Grammy award and seven nominations; he is a passionate jazz educator who shares his artistry and wisdom at workshops and music clinics around the world. jazz Biographies cont. DEE DANIELS - VOICE Dee Daniels’ musical career is as varied as her four-octave vocal range is thrilling. Her vocal style was born in her stepfather’s church choir in Oakland, CA, refined through the R&B era, polished during a five-year stay in the Netherlands and Belgium, and brought to full fruition upon her return to North America. She has performed and recorded with Toots Thielemans, Houston Person, Clark Terry, Lionel Hampton, Ed Thigpen, Monty Alexander, John Clayton, Hank Jones, and Russell Malone, to mention a few. In 2001, she established the Dee Daniels Jazz Vocal Scholarship at the Capilano College in North Vancouver, B.C. QUINCY DAVIS - DRUMS Drummer Quincy Davis has performed with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Frank Wess, Russell Malone, Jon Faddis, Stefon Harris, Roy Hargrove, Regina Carter, and many others. Davis has played in more than 10 different countries and in many well known venues, including the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note in New York City, the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, New Morning Jazz Club in Paris, and the Jazz Bakery in Yoshi, Japan. CHUCK DEARDORF - BASS Chuck Deardorf has recorded and toured internationally with Bud Shank, Don Lanphere, George Cables, Kenny Barron, Winard Harper, and Larry Coryell. As the first call bassist in Seattle, Chuck has performed with Chet Baker, Zoot Sims, Monty Alexander, Kenny Burrell, Marian McPartland, Mel Lewis, Pete Christlieb, Joe Williams, Joe LaBarbara, and Tal Farlow. Chuck currently performs with the Jovino Santos Neto Quarteto, and the Bill Ramsay Big Band, among others. PAQUITO D’RIVERA - CLARINET/SAX Nine-time Grammy winner Paquito D’Rivera is celebrated both for his artistry in jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. His numerous recordings include more than 30 solo albums. In 1988, he was a founding member of the United Nation Orchestra, a 15-piece ensemble organized by Dizzy Gillespie to showcase the fusion of Latin and Caribbean influences with jazz. He is a recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Award and the National Medal of the Arts, as well as the Living Jazz Legend Award from the Kennedy Center. BRUCE FORMAN - GUITAR Bruce Forman has been featured as leader and sideman at many of the most prestigious festivals and concert venues throughout the world. His has recorded and performed with Bobby Hutcherson, Ray Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Barney Kessel, Roger Kellaway, Richie Cole, and countless others.
JOEL FRAHM – TENOR SAX If you’ve spent time in the New York jazz scene during the last two decades, you have undoubtedly heard about the exceptional saxophonist Joel Frahm. His past recordings have been universally acclaimed and his live performances breathtaking. On his new CD, “We Used to Dance,” he has come into his own as one of the most important saxophonists of his generation. Surrounded by Stan Getz’s legendary rhythm section - Kenny Barron, Rufus Reid and Victor Lewis - Frahm makes this recording a true “coming out party” for his maturing artistry. PAUL GABRIELSON - BASS Bassist Paul Gabrielson has been the bassist for the Marc Seales Trio, and has recorded with Jay Thomas Quartet, the Steve Korn Group, Thomas and Dave Marriott, Greg Williamson and the Pony Boy Records team. In addition to performing and teaching, Paul is the bassist with the legendary folk group the Kingston Trio. ALVESTER GARNETT - DRUMS Joy and spirited musical communication are what characterize the artistry of Alvester Garnett’s drumming. Singers such as the living legend Abbey Lincoln, and instrumentalists Wynton Marsalis, James Carter, Regina Carter, and Cyrus Chestnut have all called on Alvester for the energy and fire that he brings to the bandstand. Benny Green started classical piano lessons at the age of seven. He moved to New York in the 1980s, and began performing with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and eventually Freddie Hubbard’s quintet. In 1993, Oscar Peterson chose Benny as the first recipient of the City of Toronto’s Glen Gould International Protégé Prize in Music. That year, Green joined the Ray Brown Trio, and worked with the veteran bass player until 1997. From then on Benny has resumed his freelance career, led his own trios, and concentrated on his solo performances. RANDY HALBERSTADT - PIANO Randy Halberstadt has been a major figure on the Pacific Northwest jazz scene for many years. In addition to leading his own trio and producing his own recordings, he has performed with Herb Ellis, Slide Hampton, Pete Christlieb, Bobby Shew, Joe LaBarbera, Lanny Morgan, John Stowell, David Friesen, Kim Richmond, Don Lanphere, Jiggs Whigham, Gary Smulyan, Mel Brown, and many others.
JEFF HAMILTON - DRUMS Jeff Hamilton grew up listening to his parent’s big band records, and at the age of eight began playing drums along with Oscar Peterson records. In 1974, he got his first big break playing with the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He played in Lionel Hampton’s Band until 1975 when he, along with bassist John Clayton, became members of the Monty Alexander Trio. Jeff is co-founder of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and has been on nearly 200 recordings with artists such as Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Barbara Streisand, Mel Torme, Dr. John, Clark Terry, Gene Harris, Keely Smith, Bill Holman, Herb Ellis, and Mark Murphy. JOHN HANSEN - PIANO Pianist John Hansen has performed and recorded with many of the Northwest’s award-winning bands including the Jay Thomas Quartet, Jim Knapp Orchestra, Kelley Johnson, and the Bill Ramsay-Milt Kleeb Band with Pete Christlieb. He has been invited to perform with the Seattle Symphony, Rick Margitza, Randy Brecker, Ingrid Jensen, Ernestine Anderson, the Woody Herman Orchestra, Bud Shank, Bobby Shew, David ‘Fathead’ Newman, and more. STEFON HARRIS - MALLETS Stefon Harris is a recipient of the prestigious Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center and has earned three consecutive Grammy nominations including Best Jazz Album. He has been voted Best Mallet player by Jazz Times Critics Poll and by the Jazz Journalist Association, Debut Artist of the Year by Jazz Times, Chicago Tribune’s Debut of the Year, and DownBeat’s Critics Poll Winner for Vibraphone and Rising Star. TAMIR HENDELMAN - PIANO Tamir Hendelman studied composition at the Tanglewood Institute, and has since performed with Teddy Edwards, Harry Allen, Phil Upchurch, Rickey Woodard, and Sandra Booker. His accomplishments include awards from ASCAP and the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. He serves as musical director for the Lovewell Institute for Creative Arts, and as a clinician for the Thelonius Monk Institute. GARY HOBBS - DRUMS Gary Hobbs has played professionally for over 3 decades and appears on more than 50 recordings. Gary played with the Stan Kenton Orchestra from 1975 through 1977, and through the years has performed with Randy Brecker, Pete Christlieb, the New York Voices, and many more. More recently, Gary has shared the stage with Bud Shank, Randy Brecker, David Freisen, Bobby Shew, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and Terry Gibbs.

jazz Biographies cont. BILL HOLMAN - ARRANGING NEA Jazz Master Bill Holman is widely recognized as a true living legend of jazz. His roots as tenor saxophonist, composer and arranger extend as far back as 1949, but he is perhaps most revered today for ushering the genre of big band music into the 21st century. His 16-piece ensemble, the Bill Holman Band, has been performing and recording continually since 1975. Three-time Grammy winner Holman also loves teaching and has conducted clinics and workshops throughout his career. Since 2000, the Bill Holman Collection of scores and memorabilia has been housed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. MATT JORGENSEN - DRUMS Versatile drummer Matt Jorgensen has recorded four albums with his group Matt Jorgensen +451, and has toured extensively. As a sideman he is frequently called on by Peter Bernstein, Eric Alexander, Bill Mays, Vincent Herring, George Colligan, Reggie Workman, Tim Ries, Chuck Leavell and others. CHUCK KISTLER - BASS
Chuck Kistler is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where he studied with Garrison Fewell, Mitch Haupers, Matt Glaser and Phil Wilson. Chuck has played with Ernestine Anderson, Floyd Standifer, Don Lanphere, Clarence Acox, Thomas Marriott and John Stowell, among others. He is currently a member of the Jay Thomas Quartet.
CHRISTOPH LUTY - BASS Bassist Christoph Luty is known for his big, natural sound, melodic bass lines and solos, and articulate arco playing. He is presently a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio, which performs concerts, club dates and workshops nationally and internationally. As the longtime bassist of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra he has collaborated on concerts with artists such as Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Diana Krall, Clark Terry, Dave Brubeck, and Shirley Horn, and has recorded with the likes of Milt Jackson, John Pizzarelli, Diana Krall and others.
KELBY MACNAYR - DRUMS Kelby MacNayr performs jazz, classical, and new music; and has collaborated with many acclaimed artists including Anne Schaefer, pop group Elephant Island, N.Y. pianist Misha Piatigorsky, composer and pianist Marianne Trudel, Christine Jensen, Chuck Deardorf, Ian McDougall, Chet Doxas and many others. THOMAS MARRIOTT - TRUMPET Seven-time Golden Ear award winner Thomas Marriott is a skilled instrumentalist, composer and producer. After winning the prestigious Carmine Caruso Jazz Trumpet Competition in 1999, Marriott headed east to New York where he gained acclaim through his work with Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau band, Rosemary Clooney, the Tito Puente Orchestra, Les Brown and the Band of Renown, Kenny Kirkland, Charlie Hunter, and many others. Joe Sanders has played, recorded, and toured with many great musicians, including Ravi Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, Wayne Shorter, Dave Brubeck, Mulgrew Miller, Geri Allen, Jeff Watts, Karriem Riggins, Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Gerald Clayton, Geoffery Keezer, Lionel Loueke, Aaron Parks, Chris Potter, Ambrose Akinmusire, Christian Scott, and Taylor Eigsti. A noted pianist, composer and leading figure in the Northwest jazz scene, Marc Seales has shared the stage with many of the great players of the last two decades, including Joe Henderson, Art Pepper, Benny Carter, Mark Murphy, and Bobby Hutcherson. With the late Don Lanphere he performed in such places as London, Japan, the Hague in the Netherlands, and the North Sea Jazz Festival.
GARY SMULYAN - BARI SAX Gary Smulyan is a four-time winner of the DownBeat Readers Poll, and a five-time Grammy award winner for his work with B.B. King, Lovano, Holland and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He attended SUNY-Potsdam and Hofstra University before joining Woody Herman’s Young Thundering Herd in 1978. He also found work with other important large ensembles including the Mingus Epitaph band, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. TERELL STAFFORD - TRUMPET Terell Stafford picked up his first trumpet at the age of thirteen, and even though he was drawn to jazz, initially studied classical music. Stafford has performed with groups such as Benny Golson’s sextet, McCoy Tyner’s sextet, the Jimmy Heath Big Band, and the Jon Faddis Orchestra. Currently he is a member of the Grammy award winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, as well as a member of the Grammy-nominated Clayton Brothers Quintet and the Frank Wess Quintet. Stafford has recorded six albums as a leader, and as a sideman has been featured on more than 90 recordings. MARK TAYLOR – ALTO SAX Mark Taylor was honored as NW Jazz Instrumentalist of 2008 by Earshot Jazz Magazine, and performs and records extensively with such diverse and award-winning groups as the Jim Knapp Orchestra, Thomas Marriott, Wayne Horvitz, the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, and the Randy Halberstadt Quintet. JAY THOMAS - TRUMPET
Jay Thomas is a versatile multiinstrumentalist, and can be heard on more than 60 recordings that run the gamut from hip-hop to acid-jazz, rock, Latin, and big band. Jay has appeared in concert with Mel Lewis, John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton, Maria Schneider, Bill Holman, Bob Florence and Frank Wess. BYRON VANNOY - DRUMS Byron Vannoy has performed and recorded with many internationally known musicians such as Julian Priester, Herbie Hancock, Randy Brecker, Jovino Santos Neto, Tom Scott, Wayne Horvitz, Ron Carter, Ernestine Anderson, and Hadley Caliman. GREG WILLIAMSON - DRUMS Drummer, percussionist, and composer Greg Williamson has toured with Woody Herman, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and Harry James among others. A veteran of more than 30 albums, he toured for several years with Steve Allen and Tonight Show Live with legendary pianist Paul Smith, and has performed with Seattle’s Ernestine Anderson since 1991, acting in later years as her musical director.

JIGGS WHIGHAM - TROMBONE Jiggs Whigham first came to the attention of critics and fans at age 17 as featured soloist and first trombonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, directed by Ray McKinley. In 1979 he was named Professor and Head of the Jazz Department at Cologne University College of Music. From 1995-2000 he was chief conductor and artistic director of the Berlin Radio Orchestra. He is currently a soloist and clinician worldwide, conductor of the BBC Big Band in Great Britain, artistic director of the Berlin Jazz Orchestra and visiting Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Brooklyn native Charenée Wade began singing at the age of 12. She was accepted into Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Program and performed her original music at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She returned to the Kennedy Center for the 2004 Thelonious Monk Competition, where she placed fourth in the finals. In 2006, she was 1st Runner-Up in the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition. Most recently, she served as a judge at the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition alongside Dr. Billy Taylor and Grady Tate.

Centrum is proud to welcome the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2011 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, and the BuJazzO Youth Orchestra to Jazz in the Clubs at Jazz Port Townsend. Created in 1971 as a part of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s continuing commitment to jazz education, and selected through an application process during the Next Generation Jazz Festival each spring, former members of the Orchestra Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2011 include pianists Benny Green Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and Patrice Rushen, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Chad Wackerman, saxophonists Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin, Eric Marienthal, Dave Koz, trombonist Andy Martin, trumpeters Gilbert Castellanos, Ambrose Akinmusire, and big band leader Gordon Goodwin to name a few. In the past, the band has been under the leadership of Ladd McIntosh, Don Schamber, Benny Golson, Bill Berry, and many more. The award-winning Bundesjazzorchester (BuJazzO), Germany’s Youth Jazz Orchestra, is led by Jiggs Whigham, and sponsors qualified and talented young jazz musicians in Germany. As an institution involved in the musical training of young people, it is unique BuJazzO in its kind worldwide. Young instrumentalists and singers can apply to join the BuJazzO, the musicians selected are then invited to audition. Successful candidates have the opportunity to develop their talent for a further period of two years up to a maximum age of 24. The BuJazzO, winner of the 1997 German Music Prize, and the 2009 Jazz Prize of West German Broadcasting Service, has given over 400 concerts, undertaken twenty international tours and produced numerous broadcast recordings.
