Getaway & Newcomers’ Guide Getaway Travel Tips ..................6 Your getaway to Port Townsend and Jefferson County could include a sunrise at the Wooden Boat Festival in September. Photo by Nicholas Johnson

Welcome to the other side!

Welcome to your getaway in Port Townsend, Jefferson County and the Olympic Peninsula. We are on the other side of it all, less than an hour’s worth of driving time plus a ferry boat ride from downtown Seattle, yet worlds away from the big city thump. It’s great for a day trip or overnight away from your home along the Interstate 5 corridor, and ideal for a destination vacation in any season. No one forces you to “do” any particular visitor activity. Move at your own pace. There are plenty of free or almost-free outdoor activities. Entertain yourself, or take part in our many festivals, concerts, shows and business offerings. On your getaway, check with one of our visitor centers for detailed maps and instructions on your specific area of interest, including options on the peninsula’s West End. Be here, because you are not there, which means you are on a getaway.

Best foods Tasty choices satisfy “Where’s a good place to eat?” It’s one of the first questions visitors often ask locals. The answer is easy: Just about any place you choose. We’re fortunate to have a wide variety of eating establishments, from corner cafes to fine dining – the cafeteria at the public hospital offers locally sourced, custom-made food (and is open to the public). Looking for a place in Port Townsend for a family with young

children that’s not too expensive or posh? Try the Dogs-A-Foot wagon downtown, with outside seating. Looking for a pre-made lunch to take on your hike? Try the deli at the Food Co-op, Aldrich’s, Penny Saver or any grocery store. Where can you get a good burger and milkshake to go? Burgers Landing in Port Hadlock is a favorite. Best breakfast? Any of these cafes are great: Blue Moose, Hudson Point or Sweet Laurette. As for salads, the Fountain Cafe is a winner. The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader newspaper (publishers of this Getaway Guide) hosts an unscientific survey each year to determine the “Best Foods” served here. These are the top scorers from our 20th survey, conducted in October 2015:

The Rat Island Rowing and Sculling Club keeps many of its boats at the Maritime Center, with a renewed national interest in wooden racing shells since “The Boys in the Boat” was published in 2013. At the other end of town, marine trades are thriving at the Port Townsend Boat Haven, home to ever expanding numbers of talented professionals. Mammoth tugs and other workboats, gorgeous yachts powered by motor and sail, and fishing boats of every stripe come to the PT shipyard for maintenance, restoration and repair. fishing fleet’s business. One of the most noteworthy visitors is the Western Flyer, a 76-foot fishing boat made famous by John Steinbeck in his 1951 “The Log from the Sea of Cortez.”

It had been submerged, twice, in the last decade before it came to PT’s yard in 2013. A new owner decided this was clearly the place for it to be restored, an estimated $2 million project for the wooden boat to become a marine science educational vessel based in Monterey Bay, California. Under restoration at the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op, 919 Haines Pl., the Western Flyer may be viewed from a mezzanine. Check in at the Co-op office, 11 a.m..-3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays. Volunteer docents are on duty for Saturday tours. It’s OK to walk or bicycle through the shipyard (which is also a portal to the Larry Scott Memorial Trail) or drive (slowly) through the yard for an up-close look. In Lower Port Hadlock, visit the bustling and picturesque Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, which has taught and preserved traditional boatbuilding skills since 1981. The school has short- and long-term classes plus community activities. For information about scheduled tours, visit nwswb.edu. Landlubber or swabbie, don’t let your trip to Port Townsend end without a waterfront visit.

pressions Gallery on the water side of the highway. For the Carving Shed, call ahead to see if a master carver is active on the day you are visiting: 360-681-3415. Carvers use the shed to create huge cedar totems, employing many of the traditional tools and methods. The carvers will also help you learn the meaning of the iconography. At least eight finished totems decorate the tribal center grounds; each tells a story. A wealth of information can be found at jamestowntribe.org; note the online museum listed as “House of Seven Generations.”

OZETTE VILLAGE AND THE MAKAH “The beginning of the ap eM world” is how Neah Bay promotes itself to the outside world, and it takes a real effort to get to the farthest northwest point in the continental U.S. But it’s worth it, and thanks to the Makah Tribe and its world-class Makah Museum, the “beginning of the world” is not just about the edge of the continent, but is also about the homes, the tools, the practices and the arts that native peoples enjoyed at the dawn of human history. Ozette was a thriving village in a protected stretch of the wild Pacific Coast 16 miles south of what is now called Neah Bay. Archaeology indicates it had been occupied for more than 2,000 years, with many longhouses stretching along threequarters of a mile of coastline. Its men pursued whales and seals; its women wove baskets and prepared food. They actively traded up and down the coast. In about 1560 (according to radiocarbon tests), the village was buried by a mud slurry. The mud pushed over but preserved the housing materials, the whale bones, the tools and all the other artifacts of daily life, offering the Northwest’s best-preserved glimpse of life before Europeans and before the terrible diseases that wiped out so much of native life and culture. In 1970, Makah leaders saw that ocean storms were tearing away the mud bluff and washing artifacts out to sea. They invited Washington State U niversity archaeologist Richard Daugherty to organize and lead a dig, and he did – for 11 years. The result was a rich trove of items – 55,000 items – and a clear idea of Ozette life, much of it displayed in the Makah

QUINAULT: THE CANOE PEOPLE The Quinault and Queets tribes occupy a large reservation, a ap eM sovereign nation, of their ancestral territory of over 208,000 acres and 23 miles of Pacific coastline. They call themselves the Canoe People and the People of the Cedar Tree, due to their prowess with ocean-going canoes. The tribal center is at Taholah, where the tribe maintains a museum of artifacts and historical narrative that is open weekdays. Visit quinaultindiannation.com for more information.

HOH TRIBE AND THE RIVER The Hoh Tribe, considered a branch of the Quileutes, controls a resap eM ervation of 443 acres that is centered on the mighty Hoh River, which drains the Olympic Mountains watershed, reaching inland to Mount Olympus itself. You can drive for 15 miles along the river and to a popular campground and rain forest hikes in the Olympic National Park. About 20 miles south of Forks, turn east off U.S. 101 and onto Upper Hoh Road. An information kiosk about halfway up the Hoh road gives background on all the region’s tribes and tells a fascinating story. In 1808, a Russian ship led by a young skipper with his young wife, Anna Petrovna, was wrecked on the coast near La Push. Skirmishes between the survivors and both Quileute and Hoh Indians ensued. At the mouth of the Hoh, Anna was taken captive, and the remaining Russians marched 13 miles up the Hoh River to build a small fort and await rescue. In time, they came down river and, with Anna on hand to say she’d been well-treated by the natives, they surrendered. Most became captive of the Makah. Some survived until 1810 when they were ransomed by an American skipper. Anna was not among the survivors. For more about the Hoh, visit hohtribe-nsn.org.

The summer of 2015 brought a record drought and wildfires in the rain forest.
