GETTING AROUND

Being the new guy, I asked how someone could sort out all these trails that I saw on the map. I certainly fumbled a bit figuring out where things were located and how everything connected. We agreed that it was time for a new map that designates major passageways within the trail/route network. To minimize confusion and give the system clarity, many trails, walk/ bike paths and back roads are highlighted into fully connected corridors on this map.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

One of the big issues of trail system development is continuity. There are missing snippets of trails here and there. Many are caused by real estate and right-of-way transfer issues from the past. NMTAB monitors these gaps and, when possible, has the City re-obtain these

snippets to improve connectivity. Another goal is to provide walking/biking routes that are separated from motorized vehicles. While maintaining trails, NMTAB also works on trails that lead to many destinations: open spaces, schools, parks, cultural resources, shorelines and employment and commercial centers. To do the most good for the most people, these trails, routes and corridors are establishing walking and biking ways near multi-family and high-density developments to encourage more “active transportation.”

Karen Andre, secretary and mistress to financier Bjorn Faulkner, is on trial for his murder. Or was it a suicide? Director Val Durling says, “This play reminds me of TV dramas such as Playhouse 90 or The 11th Hour. Lots of high drama, but also with a natural and humorous side.”

YOU decide GUILTY or NOT GUILTY because the play includes jury selection from the audience. To register for jury drawing, be at the Bay Club 1/2 hour before show time. Jury gets front-row seats. Thursday, Friday & Saturday March 26-28 at 7:00 pm, Sunday, March 29 at 2:00. Tickets $15 at the Port Ludlow Bay Club and at brownpapertickets.com.

Trail user conflicts have been minor in Port Townsend, according to members of the City of Port Townsend’s NonMotorized Transportation Advisory Board. “Most people know how to share trails, but occasionally someone does pass another without announcing their presence or slowing down,” said Lys Burden, board member. “Frequent trail users have stories about these encounters, and some downhill sections of trails encourage higher speeds. It is wise to be wary, but always best to habitually practice trail courtesy with others; this behavior creates a happy, friendly trail user community.”

Trail users with dogs should always have them on leash and in control whenever approaching others, and dog walkers should make a habit of picking up all dog poop and putting it in the trash. Dogs are required to be on leash within the City of Port Townsend, and within Washington State Parks.

Pedestrians (people walking) ALWAYS have the rightof-way over any other mode or pace (horses, bicycles, runners). On wider facilities, like the Larry Scott Memorial Trail, when overtaking other trail users, it is customary to pass on the left, with a courteous greeting, “Hello,” or “Good day,” and saying “On your left.” When overtaking on narrower trails, the over-taker should SLOW DOWN, proceed with caution and give a friendly greeting to the overtaken. Then, negotiation usually happens in which the slower party usually steps aside to let the faster one pass. Gratitude for yielding party should ALWAYS be expressed. When meeting other oncoming trail users, pedestrians should use their best judgment as to who should yield the right-of-way and express it by their actions. They can remain walking, in which case the other user should stop and step aside; or they can step aside and allow the other to pass. Friendly greetings, salutations and thanks should always be expressed.

Learn how he discovered trails on undeveloped islands and trails to secluded beaches, bays and coves; trails on rugged coastal ledges and bluffs; and trails through magnificent old-growth forests that were old even when George Vancouver sailed into the Salish Sea. GREAT DECISIONS: Privacy in the Digital Age • Thursday, May 21, 7:30 p.m. Produced by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), Great Decisions is America’s largest civic discussion program on world affairs. This series is brought to the library from the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Adult Learning Program (ALPs). Programs are held every Thursday evening from May 14 to July 2 and are facilitated by Joyce Francis, PhD. This week, we will discuss how the idea of “privacy” has undergone significant changes in the digital age, as has the idea of privacy “harm.” Fearful of British spying, influence and intervention, the founding fathers granted citizens significant protections in the Constitution. Now, the tables have turned; Concerns about what some see as a U.S. “dragnet” and unwarranted privacy intrusions have compelled other countries to revamp their own privacy protections. Legislation, both at home and abroad, hasn’t kept pace with technological developments, leaving some wondering if privacy as we know it is long dead. GREAT DECISIONS: Russia and the Near Abroad • Thursday, May 14, 7:30 p.m., with guest Galen Clark, Russian expert and linguist. This week we will discuss how, as calls for closer ties with the European Union failed to be met, Ukrainians took to the streets in November 2013. As the movement later known as the Euromaidan, or “Euro Square,” pulled western Ukraine closer to its European neighbors, another powerful force threatened to tear away the country’s eastern half: Russia. Putin’s pushback against European expansionism has the West wondering: If Putin’s Russia isn’t afraid to take an aggressive stance against Europeanization in Ukraine, what does that mean for the rest of Russia’s neighbors?

INQUIRING MIND LECTURE: Washington’s Music Pioneers • with Amanda Wilde. Wednesday, March 18, 6:30 p.m. Radio host, producer, and musical journalist Amanda Wilde, well known for her eclectic knowledge of music and interviews, will present this final 2015 Inquiring Mind lecture. Washington state holds the unique position of being ‘on the edge of the world’ from both musical and geographic standpoints. This placement provided a rich breeding ground for three distinct and revolutionary artists who pushed artistic and technological limits to forge new musical and cultural territory. Wilde will discuss how the music of artistic giants and Washington sons Bing Crosby, Jimi Hendrix, and Kurt Cobain spans generations. Wilde will also highlight unusual and universal themes and threads that weave three distinct artists with three groundbreaking musical eras: the 1930s, the 1960s and the 1990s. Along the way, she will show how they have influenced the technology, business, and notoriety of Washington State. Wilde was a key figure in the development of cutting-edge Seattle music station KEXP and hosted their afternoon drive show for 12 years. In 2003, Wilde joined KUOW where she hosts and produces the acclaimed music program, “The Swing Years and Beyond.” Co-sponsored by Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau.

This portage route was used by indigenous people to avoid the hazardous waters around Point Wilson. At the north end of the Valley Trail is a hotbed of trails located at Fort Worden State Park, which served as a U.S. Army Coast Artillery defense installation from 1902 to 1953. Why use the trail system? Why not? By Patrick J. Sullivan of the Leader

The City of Port Townsend has $80 million worth of street repairs on backlog. “That amount of work will never get done,” said Scott Walker, a member of the City’s Non-Motorized Transportation Advisory Board, and godfather of the public trail system. “We need to get people out of their cars and that means providing alternatives.” Walking or biking the trail system, which includes sidewalks and streets, is a healthy alternative along with a transportation choice. “The principal cause of chronic health issues is a sedentary lifestyle,” Walker noted. “We moved here because of the trail system,” said Lys Burden. “We wanted to live as much as we could without a car, and live an active lifestyle.” Hendrik Taatgen moved away from Port Townsend 12 years ago and was “so pleasantly surprised” upon his return to see the trail system has expanded. Long-time resident Sally Chapin uses public trails every day as she rides her bicycle to work. “If you are

not out using the trails, you need to ask yourself why,” she noted. Pat Teal walks an hour a day. She’s involved with the NMTAB to help monitor access for people with disabilities. Jolly Wahlstrom said he has always enjoyed walking, and usually does it 90 minutes a day. “It’s pleasant to not have to drive to the Olympics and still be able to have a walk in the woods.” Richard Dandridge likes the idea of improving bicycling options because combustion engines contribute to climate change. “I think bicycles are going to save the world.”

placements remain at Fort Worden’s Artillery Hill, and roads and trails are now great for walking and biking. Artillery Hill, the beach area and the campgrounds are managed by Washing-

ton State Parks, and a Discover Pass is required for visitors parking a motor vehicle at trailhead locations. The NMTAB meets at 4:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at City Hall. The board has a full complement of members; general public interest is always welcome. Right now, only a handful of people do the most for our trail system, although a recent work party had 27 people, thanks to participation by the local youth mountain bike team. People can volunteer to help the PT Trail Crew by sending a message to pttrailcrew@gmail.com or calling 360-301-0982.
