Free activities kick off at Fort Worden Rediscover Fort Worden with a day of free activities for the whole family on Saturday, May 31. The celebration marks a new partnership between Fort Worden Public Development Authority and Washington State Parks that aims to preserve, enhance and honor Fort Worden for generations to come. Campus partners offer open houses, and there are free guided tours of historic and cultural sites, kids’ games, live music and performances. Bon Appétit Café offers snacks, and nonalcoholic beverages are served on the Commons lawn, 2-7 p.m.; a beer garden is also open during those hours. At 5 p.m. enjoy an à la carte community picnic on the Commons lawn (prices vary). The Kids’ Play Zone includes an obstacle course, face painting and youth yoga, birdhouse building, hula hoops, juggling and parachutes. The afternoon also features plenty of music and entertainment, starting with a dance party featuring DJ Caleb Peacock from 2 to 3:30 p.m., music and dance by

Members of the Fort Worden Public Development Authority lead walking tours of Fort Worden’s historical buildings from 3 to 4 p.m. The May 31 celebration also includes free admission to the Commanding Officer’s Quarters Museum. And at the new Hospitality Desk in Fort Worden Commons, all are invited to learn about available accommodations and meeting space at Fort Worden and to purchase an annual Washington State

Discover Pass. The Coast Artillery Museum offers free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 31. On display are military vehicles, including a 1942 U.S. Army fire truck. Tours are available at the Harbor Entrance Control Post on Artillery Hill from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a living history display focusing on early WWII is presented by reenactors from the 249th Coast Artillery Corps (Fort Stevens State Park) from noon to 4 p.m. A guided walking tour of Artillery Hill begins at 1 p.m. At 7 p.m., Centrum’s summer season kicks off with a performance by Nanda, a high-energy show combining comedy, “kung-faux” fighting, vaudeville and “acrobaticalism.” The group grew up together in Port Townsend and celebrates 10 years of performing together this year.
