On behalf of the entire Centrum community of artists, I invite you to join us to discover a full array of main stage performances, nightclub events, vibrant readings, lectures, dances, and more in honor of Centrum’s 40th anniversary in 2013. We are particularly excited about this year’s Jazz Port Townsend and Acoustic Blues festivals, which flow from one to the other as seamlessly as day into night. Artistic Directors John Clayton (Jazz) and Daryl Davis (Acoustic Blues) have assembled the finest cast of teachers and performers for your enjoyment. I urge you to see and hear what Centrum has to offer both at Fort Worden during our main stage concerts as well as throughout downtown when our artists occupy nearly every restaurant and club in town. Letter from the Mayor On behalf of the City of Port Townsend I want to welcome you to the 2013 edition of Centrum’s Jazz Port Townsend. This is the 40th year of Jazz at Centrum. I live a few blocks from here and I remember the McCurdy Pavilion when it was a ruined balloon hanger. Little did I know as I poked around its rusting beams in the early 80s that it would become one of the premier performance venues in the Pacific Northwest. But, as Jazz participants know, the campus at Fort Worden is much more than a place to hear wonderful music in a glorious natural setting. It’s a place to gather with other artist and colleagues for a transformative experience of education and inspiration. In this it reflects the culture of our entire community. We constantly strive to preserve, enhance and share the extraordinary gift of our history in this location in ways that will benefit visitors and residents alike. I hope you take the time to look around a bit and are able to discover some of the many other pleasures that keep us here and will bring you back. Regards,

SATURDAY, JULY 27 SATURDAY AFTERNOON CONCERT

My first experience with Jazz Port Townsend was as an audience mem 1985. I remember thinking I had ber in never much fun playing music – any kind seen performers that good having so of music. I was hooked. I soon cam understand that it was precisely e to because these musicians were so good that they were able to have so much fun. The most gratifying thing about now being the program manage r of Jazz Port Townsend is continuing the tradition of bringing excellent perf ormers and teachers to our audiences and workshop participants. The perf ormances you will hear this weekend from our artist/faculty are the culminat ion of the Jazz Port Townsend workshop, a week of intensive study by over 230 aspiring professionals and serious amateur jazz musicians from across the cou ntry. They know what I realized back in 198 5: playing jazz is fun, and playing it well is a lot more fun. So they come here to get better by rubbing elbows and studying with 35 of the best jazz musicians and teachers you’ll find anywhere. Man y performers you’ll hear just outs ide the McCurdy Pavilion or in dow of the ntown clubs are workshop participants. Give a listen. You may hear them on the main stage sooner than you think. One of the most enjoyable things for me about Jazz Port Townsen d is presenting great jazz in two very different formats. There is nothing like the energy of 1,000 people in the McCurdy Pavilion all sharing the experience of wai ting breathlessly for the next note, or hearing a big band shake the rafters. But one of the things that makes Jazz Port Townsend so special is the performances in downtown club venues. This kind of close-up, intim ate setting is where jazz comes from – how it was originally played and liste ned to. This is where you’re clos e enough to see the sweat on a performer’s fore head or the way the musicians look at each other after a great solo. Jazz is America ’s outstanding musical gift to the world. I hope you’ll be able to experience both ways of listening to this great mus ic. No matter what you hear this wee kend, Artistic Director John Clay ton, all the performers and I thank you for being part of Jazz Port Townsen d. Playing jazz well really is fun, but playing jazz for people who truly appreciate it is the best experience of all.
