welcome to summer at Centrum’s summer workshops and festivals are your ticket to a great adventure!

At Centrum, creativity and learning are one. From exploring the roots of American blues or jazz, to the traditions of American fiddle music or our internationally acclaimed writers’ workshops - for 41 years, Centrum’s summer programs have transformed the majestic, inspiring setting of Fort Worden State Park into a unique arts destination, the rival of communities many times our size. On behalf of the entire Centrum community of artists, I invite you to join us to discover a full array of mainstage performances, nightclub events, vibrant readings, lectures, dances and more. Last year alone, Centrum served participants from 17 different countries, 46 out of 50 U.S. states, and 77% of the counties in Washington State. Our generous audiences complete Centrum’s picture, allowing all of us to share in the inherently social nature of an artistic experience here in Port Townsend! We gratefully present our programs in partnership with the Washington State Arts Commission, the Washington State Parks Commission, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Fort Worden PDA. We thank all of our thoughtful donors and generous sponsors who support Centrum and its distinctive mission in our community. An extraordinary adventure will unfold again this summer at Centrum. Thank you for joining our esteemed artists and staff for a rewarding and enriching experience!

Sincerely yours,

Celebrate 40 years of Jazz Port Townsend!

Hello, jazz lovers, and welcome to Jazz Port Townsend - our 40th year! If you’ve been with us before you’ve probably heard me talk about the jazz community as a “family.” The 230+ participants who have been here all week at the workshop certainly have become a special family through learning, listening and playing together. Now we invite you to join us for this festival weekend! One of the things all families do when they gather on special occasions is enjoy their favorite foods. We’ve prepared a banquet of the finest jazz flavors for you to enjoy both at our mainstage concerts and in the downtown clubs. You’ll hear the premiere of a work written especially for you. Plus, we’ll have the pleasure of witnessing Bill Holman conduct a piece that he wrote especially for Centrum. Of course, we always enjoy featuring our established heroes as well as today’s younger voices. So, whether you’re here for the first time or the 40th, welcome to our “family reunion!”

A 40 anniversary tribute th

John Clayton

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

We’re proud to be celebrating 40 years of Jazz Port Townsend - one of Centrum’s earliest programs. In fact, when our first jazz workshop was held in 1975, Centrum was only in its second year of programming. The first jazz workshop was initiated by Centrum’s founder, Joe Wheeler, and featured the prominent jazz composer Toshiko Akioshi. In 1977, public performances were added to the season, and in 1979, those two components were combined, eventually developing into the weeklong event it is today. Forty years is a long run in this business (although Chuck Deardorf and Bill Ramsay we like to think of it as merely a good start). To achieve success like that you need to have good people involved — the best, actually. It’s a remarkable fact that two of the performers you’ll hear this weekend were involved not only in the very first year of jazz at Centrum, but have been here every year since. Chuck Deardorf was a student in 1975 and quickly became a professional bassist in the Seattle jazz community, as well as a faculty member and perennial favorite of Centrum audiences. He went on to head the Jazz Program at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, where he has taught for more than 20 years. In 2010, Deardorf was inducted into Earshot’s Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame. Bill Ramsay has played more gigs in more places with more people than any dozen musicians you could probably name. In addition to his innumerable mainstage and club performances for Centrum, as well as all over the Northwest, Bill plays regularly with the Count Basie Orchestra, which continues to tour internationally. For many years, Ramsay has done the crucial work of selecting and contacting the members of Centrum’s All-Star Big Band. Put simply, he knows everyone and everyone knows him, which is one of the reasons he was voted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame in 1977. Ramsay is also famous for his wit. When visiting him in the hospital a friend told Ramsay that he had an arrhythmia. Without hesitating Bill replied, “Who could ask for anything more?” He’s got a million of ‘em. We couldn’t have Jazz Port Townsend without people like Chuck Deardorf and Bill Ramsay. Please join us in thanking them for 40 years of outstanding music making at Centrum. They’re off to a great start.

Christine Jensen ALTO SAX Montreal-based saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen has been described as “an original voice on the international jazz scene… [and] one of Canada’s most compelling composers,” by Mark Miller of the Globe and Mail. Noted for her ability to transfer the intimate sound of a quartet into larger ensembles, Jensen’s music has been performed by ensembles around the globe, including the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, Germany; the UMO Big Band, Finland; and the McGill Jazz Orchestra, Montreal. Jensen won the 2011 Juno Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year for “Treelines” recorded with The Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra on Justin-Time Records. Along with her sister, New York-based trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, and close friend and longtime musical cohort, Swedish pianist, Maggi Olin, she co-leads the group, Nordic Connect. They released their first joint effort in 2007 entitled, “Flurry” and followed up in 2010 with “Spirals.” The group has toured Canada, the U.S. and Scandinavia extensively over the past five years.

Ingrid Jensen TRUMPET From her early days playing in the subways of New York, to establishing herself as a leader and soloist in a wide array of musical genres, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen has made her mark. Her three CD’s for the ENJA label and her latest CD, “At Sea,” won her nominations from the Canadian Juno Awards, including an award in 1995 for “Vernal Fields.” Jensen’s performances as a leader and as a featured soloist have taken her around the world from Canada to Japan, Australia, South America, South Africa, the Caribbean and to almost every country in Europe and Scandinavia. Geoffrey Keezer PIANO With his highly regarded discography, unique compositions and acclaimed performances in a variety of configurations, pianist Geoffrey Keezer commands the attention typically reserved for the living legends of jazz. Whether recording with jazzy chanteuses Diana Krall or Dianne Reeves, touring with trumpet king Chris Botti, or collaborating with pop icon Sting, sax legend Wayne Shorter, guitar wizard Jim Hall, star bassist Christian McBride or vibes master Joe Locke, Geoffrey “has more than enough virtuosity and sheer musical wit and intelligence to weave all of his apparently disparate strands of influence into an original and compelling whole” (Time Magazine). A native of Eau Claire, Wis., Keezer was playing in jazz clubs as a teenager, holding down the piano chair for Art Blakey at age 18, and touring in the company of Joshua Redman, Benny Golson and Ray Brown in his 20s. More recently he has toured with David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Joe Locke and Christian McBride; worked with vocalist Denise Donatelli on projects garnering three Grammy nominations, and released a series of albums drawing influences from Hawaiian, Okinawan and Afro-Peruvian folk traditions.
