Become a member and get involved 2011 is, without doubt, the most exciting time in Chamber history, with a huge transition in direction and a revised focus aimed solely at better serving the varied business needs of Jefferson County. Returning to this place I have always called home brings with it an opportunity to enact the Chamber’s new strategic plan, something that the talented business leaders in the county have been preparing for over a year and a half. Bringing together the regional chambers into a single, dedicated unit presents both significant opportunities and challenges that we will tackle
Along with this shift in focus comes immediate economic growth. The Chamber will seek external funding
to create new jobs in the county, all of which will be aimed at identifying and maximizing opportunities for local businesses, thus creating more employment in 2011.
Most important is feedback and involvement from the business community of the county. I implore you to attend Chamber meetings, become a member and get involved. If you have attended in the past and have since opted out, please return so we may illustrate to you how we are changing and how we will fight for your business into the coming decade and beyond.

By Karen Anderson our business determines what is in the Visitor Information Center (VIC) by how involved you choose to be with your Chamber. Whether you are in direct competition with another store in the area, or have a one-of-a-kind outfit, joining the Chamber of Commerce is saying “yes” to local business, without which our type of community would not survive. How can you use the VIC to your business’ advantage? The VIC is located in the same building as your Chamber offices. Use your own powerful word-of-mouth advertising and take a moment to pause at the VIC counter and say “Hello” or introduce yourself to the volunteers who staff the VIC seven days a week. Come by and come often. There is no better way to disseminate your business information than to have it handy in a moment’s notice. Dedicate two hours a week to help get the word out to locals and tourists about your business by volunteering at the VIC. Educate your fellow volunteers

about your Chamber business so you can ensure that word-of-mouth advertising will continue while you are at your storefront. Brochures displayed at the VIC are a perk for Chamber members. In addition to volunteers talking about your business, brochures provide visual information about you and offer a more complete explanation of your business in your own words. The VIC tracks all vacancies over the course of the year for tourists with last-minute plans. Volunteers determine the type of accommodation visitors are looking for based on various factors. Businesses that call their availability in to the VIC get recommended faster and more often than businesses that don’t. Call weekly or subscribe to Webervations to effectively inform volunteers about when your business has rooms available. The VIC is always a work in progress. Be an active member of your Chamber by offering constructive ideas for improvements so it can serve your business more efficiently. New ideas are always in the air to heighten your business’ visibility. The VIC is an extension of your Chamber. Use it as you would use the Chamber to maximize your membership advantages.
