Finding a place in today’s job market There is a wealth of experience that comes from having lived a long life, yet you who hold the riches of wisdom in your minds and hearts may not always hold those riches in your hands. Or if you do, you may find that the money goes from hand to mouth way too quickly. Especially in these tough economic times, that can be a source of dismay. Even if you are one of those older people who don’t need to go back to work, you may still want to do so. You may still hold dreams of fulfilling yourself in a career that was impractical or not lucrative enough to bear consideration when you were first starting to make your way in the world. It doesn’t matter whether your passion arises out of a need for money or a simple desire to make a difference. So many older people in our community wish to be instrumental in creating the future of our society but don’t feel equipped to deal with the new technology that is driving the world. There are solutions to this problem. Understanding the problem of unemployed and under employed older people in our community, the Port Townsend Public Library applied for and received a grant in August 2012 from the Washington State Library, with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, to continue its free jobs re-tooling program.
