New space, new vision Chamber, EDC, visitor center, SBDC to share new offices Several local economic development groups – Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, EDC Team Jefferson, Washington Small Business Development Center (WSBDC) and the Port Townsend Visitor Information Center, are making plans and packing boxes in preparation for the transition into their new home. They are all moving from individual space into shared space at 2409 Jefferson Street, the building that formerly housed the Northwind Arts Center.

Visitor Center volunteers gather on the porch of the current center at the park and ride lot near Safeway. When construction is complete, the center will move to the old Northwind Art Center offices. The move represents the City of Port Townsend’s longterm commitment to furthering economic development. For the foreseeable future, this funding commitment will allow the support of economic development organizations to work together and thrive in Jefferson County. “Our Business Alliance will soon be conjoined with the Port

Townsend Visitor Information Center (VIC). We are doubling our work space to allow for more collaboration, easy access to welcomed visitors and increased visibility,” said Chamber Executive Director Teresa Verraes. “Our strategic partnerships and planning over the last four years has created a domino effect.

“Northwind Art Center moved to a larger and more visible space downtown, which in turn, created room for all our teams to share space and for the Jefferson Transit to take ownership of the building that is centered in the Park-n-Ride. “When I was first hired by the Chamber, I envisioned a Continued on Page 2

Port Townsend Farmer’s Market to open April 4 New and early growth at the Port Townsend Farmers Market The Port Townsend Farmers Market begins its 23rd season on Saturday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a goat parade, music and lots of new products and vendors. In fact it will be the market’s biggest opening day ever with more than 60 vendors! Spring came early this year, and our Jefferson County farms will have full stands of fresh products: multicolored tulips by the bucketload, greens of every shade and shape will fill baskets in all of our many farmer’s booths, and cartons of orange-yolked fresh spring eggs, both chicken and duck, by the dozens and dozens. Harmony’s Way Farm of Chimacum will bring some mamas and kids to walk through the market, the very same goats that make the milk for their award winning soaps. Kristin and Otto Smith and friends will follow with a mix of folk melodies on fiddle, accordion, guitar and banjo. The parade moves slowly but doesn’t last long, so come out right

at 9 a.m. if you want to join in. Early is always a good time to come to market, because on busy days lots of products sell out by closing time. And early morning shoppers will be treated with hot beverages from Gypsy Coffeehouse and PT Coffee, pastries from Pane D’Amore and Dalla Notte, and bagels, either cream cheesed or topped with eggs and pecan sausage, from Bob’s. Every year there are new things to eat at the market. This season we welcome authentic Spanish paella from recent Spanish transplant Alejando de Basilio. Local Megan Trenary is bringing her new food business, La Femme Boucherie to market. She’s making handmade sausages, house cured bacon and lots more. Adam and Rebecca of Woodland Treasures will be selling mushrooms and mushroom products that they either grow or forage or both. In addition to the return of longtime farmers Red Dog, Midori, Finnriver, Nash’s, Colinwood, Dharma Ridge, Spring Rain, Seren-

dipity, Willow Wind, Short’s Beef and more, this year we welcome back last year’s new farm, River Run, of Sequim, and the brand new Onatrue Farm off Jacob Miller Road in Port Townsend. Max Lindert and family have all sorts of things planted on their south facing sunny acreage, from greenhouse grown baby ginger to tea plants. He’ll be mainly bringing starts and greens to early markets though, including boxes of microgreeens and bags of cut your greens- a sort of never fresher regenerative salad. Free tastes and samples are always available at the market from our many local cideries and cheese makers. Free samples are less likely from our many arts and crafts vendors, though new leather shoemaker Mike Ferguson of Sole’s Journey will do a free fitting, and Tim Black offers free hand treatments for rough palms. The Port Townsend Farmers Market runs every Saturday through December, including , this year, during Rhody Fest. For more information visit www.jcfmarkets.org.

Tulips will be among the offerings when the Port Townsend Farmer’s Market opens in April.

New space: looking forward to more collaboration

Spaces are taking shape inside the old Northwind Art Center. When completed, the facility will house several economic development agencies and the Port Townsend Visitor Information Center. 2 April 2015 Jefferson County Chamber Newsletter

Continued from Page 1 space that would allow this kind of accessibility and resource sharing, so I began the hunt. Four years later, 2409 Jefferson Street, will be the manifestation of the Chamber’s commitment to build trust and create strategic partnerships geared toward better business in Jefferson County.” Peter Quinn, EDC Team Jefferson’s Executive Director said: “Just knowing we are all going to be co-located has created a higher level of co-managing businesses. This has been particularly true with the SBDC and the newly invigorated North Olympic Development Council. Both have recently become more integrated with EDC and the Chamber than in the past year. Together we are creating Team Jefferson.” Kevin Hoult, WSBDC

Regional Director concurs. “It’s great that we’ll all be able to interact so easily. I’ll be in the Port Townsend office a couple of days a week meeting with local small business owners who can now easily be directed to Peter and Teresa about any needs they’re better able to address.” The Jefferson County Chamber and EDC Team Jefferson are both using the opportunity to take advantage of the new location to rebrand their organizations with emphasis on how much easier it will be for them to assist county businesses. The move would not be possible without the assistance of many. Special thanks go to Bill White, City of Port Townsend, Cate Comerford, Hathon Inc., Northwind Art Center, Jefferson Transit and directors of EDC Team Jefferson and the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

• Game schedule

Seed is produced in hatcheries from native broodstock. The most common method of planting is to place 10" to 12" long hollow PVC tubes 3" to 6" in diameter into the beach substrate. The tubes are set in rows, with 3 to 4 geoduck seeds placed into each tube. The tubes are covered with net caps to protect them. After one or two years the tubes are removed, giving the geoducks time to dig deep enough to avoid predators. Geoducks are harvested in about 5 years, one clam at a time, at approximately 1 to 2 pounds. A water jet is placed alongside the geoduck siphon which temporarily softens the sand, allowing the harvester to gently lift the animal out. This method minimizes the stress to the geoduck and the amount of beach that is disturbed.

Harvested geoducks are placed in containers and tagged before being removed from the beach. Tags include the name of the harvesting company, the exact location and date of harvest. They are transported to a processing facility, cleaned, bagged or boxed and placed under temperature control prior to and during shipping to restaurants or seafood markets. Strict protocol governs the entire process of handling until it reaches the consumer, assuring temperature control, traceability and the finest geoducks in the world.

program late last year. The Federal Housing Administration lowered mortgage insurance requirements for FHA loans in January. And a new market is emerging for consumers who don’t fit the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac mold. Many changes are ahead for the industry including new consumer disclosure rules to take effect in August. But home prices are slowly rising, mortgage loans are increasingly available, and mortgage lenders and real estate professionals alike are enthusiastic about what lies ahead.

ĂŠ,`

Foreclosure filings were initiated on 1,117,426 properties in 2014, down 18 percent from the previous year, and down 61 percent from the peak in 2010. Mortgage interest rates are also holding strong. Interest rates were expected to rise in 2014. Instead, 2015 began with interest rates that were the lowest the industry has seen in years. Rates reached a low of 3.59 percent for a 30year fixed rate mortgage in early February. They have since crept up to an average of 3.75 percent for the same loan in early March. The expectation is that interest rates will continue to gradually increase throughout the year. On the other hand, mortgage credit standards appear to be loosening. Many options still exist for consumers with no down payment. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac announced a new 3 percent down payment

By Emily C. Ingram RealtorsŽ and mortgage lenders are optimistic about the real estate market in Jefferson County. 2014 saw home prices creep up for the second year in a row. According to the Northwest Multiple Listing Service, the median price of a home sold in Jefferson County in February 2015 was $218,500, an increase of 12 percent over February 2014. Local industry professionals agree that the real estate market in Jefferson County has recovered. Jeff Ashmore, a real estate broker at RE/ MAX First in Port Townsend, commented: “We’re not back to 2006 levels but those were fabricated values. Current prices are at 2003 or 2004 levels and that was a reasonably healthy market. One concern for sellers in the current market: inventory. February 2015 saw 300 active listings and 40 total sales for just 7.5 months of inventory. Less inventory means greater competition among buyers for a small number of available homes. Foreclosures and short sales also appear to be slowing. Teresa Goldsmith, managing broker at John L. Scott in Port Townsend, estimated that there are currently 13 active listings in Jefferson County that are foreclosures. “Last year, I think we had double that, she said. This mirrors national foreclosure rates.

Parnassus Analytics helps businesses solve problems Steve Humphrey founded Parnassus Analytics in May of 2012, shortly before moving to Sequim. Previously, he had been a consultant for eleven years with a California-based firm helping Fortune 500 companies solve key business problems using analysis and technology. Steve designed Parnassus to focus on the human aspects of successful business analysis and problem solving. Parnassus Analytics helps clients solve business problems by tapping into the power of their collective knowledge and creativity. The client is the expert in its respective business, but not necessarily in identifying problems and designing solutions. Moreover, solutions are more effective when aligned with the organization’s core values and strategic objectives.

Steve works with businesses and organizations to articulate those values, build consensus, and identify strategies and tactics to achieve the desired goals. He does this primarily by designing tightly aligned processes, often facilitating highly structured group planning sessions that are people driven and business facing. If technology is part of a solution, he can help with the integration. Parnassus Analytics can also assist with project management. Steve brings a diverse background to his practice. After starting out in music (he earned a Bachelor’s degree in piano and a Master’s degree in opera production), he participated in a management fellowship at the National Endowment for the Arts and then went on to manage several performing arts organizations. He shifted to the

private sector in 1990, working in a variety of industries including irrigation, entertainment, and healthcare before becoming a business consultant. This diversity gives him unique perspectives for addressing problems within organizations of any size. People often ask about the firm’s name. At first, Steve was stuck for a name. He wanted something that was personal and yet would reflect the spirit of the North Olympic Peninsula. The name that he and his wife – both musicians – had given their home, Euterpe Lodge (after the muse of music), suggested the answer. Why not name the business after the mountain in Greece that was sacred to the nine muses? Parnassus Analytics: inspired business analysis! Steve and his firm continue to work with

this stuff in a way that is a detriment to us. Sometimes it brings up energies that we have suppressed or have shoved so far down into us that at some point we feel like exploding. These energies could be fear, sadness, guilt or shame. It is amazing how what we thought we got rid of could actually still be with us. It is when we begin to get overwhelmed and stressed that these energies raise their unattractive little

heads. We need to realize that these energies not being so attractive or nice can be our biggest motivators in moving forward on this journey. If we can see them in a different light knowing that we can recognize them give them the attention they are requiring and then let them move through us like a gentle breeze. If we realize where they are actually coming from, we can stop holding on and let

them go. BRAR is doing this for us. When we become still for a single moment and think to breathe -and I mean breathe that deep belly breath that fills us to the brim -- we relax and let the breath move through our bodies filling each and every cell with the breath of Love and Light. When we allow the support of the universal energy to wash through us clearing the unattractive “Stuff” from us. When we truly

receive the support from our team. This is what BRAR is. All of this can actually happen within seconds and simply with a breath. I wish all of you the embrace of BRAR. An actually big hug helps as well. Let’s all learn to live fearlessly. Let’s all learn to be our most wicked, awesome selves. Retailers feeling the heat of competition sometimes respond by lowering prices. Does anyone ever win at this game? Here are some interesting accounting insights. First, the good news – if a business has a 30 percent gross profit margin and raises prices 10 percent, that business can lose 25 percent of sales and take the same amount of money home. Hard to believe but true. Sadly, the reverse is also true - if that same business lowers prices 10 percent, it will be necessary to increase sales 25 percent to get back to the same net profit. Anyone increased sales 25 percent lately? Exactly - you can’t win and you won’t break even if you pay the price cut game. Would you like to know more?
