May 25 - Memorial Day. No meeting. Supplement to the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader.

Fireworks return, sponsors wanted Nothing celebrates America like the 4th of July and after a two-year hiatus, the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the return of fireworks to Fort Worden State Park for the first annual “Old School” 4th of July. For many years, the fireworks were sponsored by Port Townsend’s Sunrise Rotary Club and local businesses. But after the 2012 display, lack of funds canceled the 2013 and 2014 fireworks. “This year we’re inviting you, our community members and businesses, to help us bring back the fireworks and produce an amazing, grassroots, communitysupported event,” says Teresa Verraes, executive director for the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. “We’re looking for business sponsorships and individual contributions over the next three months to help put on the event and to expand it to a fully envisioned weekend of fun for the whole family.” In collaboration with

Thunderbull Productions and Centrum’s Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, locals and visitors will enjoy a memorable weekend of excellent music, delicious food and “Old School” traditions. Saturday, July 4, carries the weekend’s momentum to a climax with a pie-eating contest, field games, piñatas, free root beer floats, a car show, live music and much more, all culminating in an epic display of fireworks. This is your celebration, and you can feel pride in helping to make it happen. Donations can be made at Kitsap Bank, in any Jefferson County branch, or mailed to Kitsap Bank’s Port Townsend Branch at 2313 E Sims Way, Port Townsend, WA 98368. Contributions exceeding $20 will receive a special gift. If you own or manage a business in Jefferson County and you’re interested in contributing, please contact Dominic Svornich at 360.385.0123 or email dsvornich@kitsapbank.com for more information about sponsorships.

Employment Security offers range of business services

By Chad Pearson Shared Work Marketing Manager The Employment Security Department (ESD) isn’t just “the unemployment office” anymore. A full suite of business programs is available to help employers be successful. • Find your next employee of the month through our partnership with WorkSource. • Dial the employer help line to find information on your taxes and wage • Discover a wealth of labor market data on our Employment and Economic Information website. • Sign up for the Shared Work Program to keep employees you thought you had to lay off. These and many more services are available through Employment Security and its partners. Take, for instance, the Shared Work Program. The business climate is improving and unemployment is down in Washington. Yet, participation in the program is up 31 percent over last year because employers like you are learning about it. Under the program, businesses can reduce the hours of permanent employees, who can then collect partial unemployment benefits to replace a portion of their lost wages. This translates into immediate payroll savings and prevents the loss of skilled employees. Plus, to make the program more

affordable, the federal government will cover more than 92 percent of Shared-Work benefits through June 2015. That means you can participate virtually for free and there will be practically no effect on your unemployment-insurance tax rate. WorkSource offices around the state can help you recruit and interview prospective employees. Upgrades to the WorkSource website will soon bring a dynamic job-match system to help you recruit employees. Plus, many WorkSource locations are currently hiring Career Pathway Navigators to connect mid-career professionals and graduates to jobs and provide you with the talent you need. Make use of the employer help line (888-836-1900) to find information on tax and wages. Get answers to questions or request forms with the touch of a button. On the Employment and Economic Information website, find data about current wages, benefits and other industry-specific information to help you plan for the future. You always have prided yourself on staying two steps ahead of the competition through innovation, management or great employees. The Employment Security Department can help you keep climbing.

• Game schedule

Seed is produced in hatcheries from native broodstock. The most common method of planting is to place 10" to 12" long hollow PVC tubes 3" to 6" in diameter into the beach substrate. The tubes are set in rows, with 3 to 4 geoduck seeds placed into each tube. The tubes are covered with net caps to protect them. After one or two years the tubes are removed, giving the geoducks time to dig deep enough to avoid predators. Geoducks are harvested in about 5 years, one clam at a time, at approximately 1 to 2 pounds. A water jet is placed alongside the geoduck siphon which temporarily softens the sand, allowing the harvester to gently lift the animal out. This method minimizes the stress to the geoduck and the amount of beach that is disturbed.

Harvested geoducks are placed in containers and tagged before being removed from the beach. Tags include the name of the harvesting company, the exact location and date of harvest. They are transported to a processing facility, cleaned, bagged or boxed and placed under temperature control prior to and during shipping to restaurants or seafood markets. Strict protocol governs the entire process of handling until it reaches the consumer, assuring temperature control, traceability and the finest geoducks in the world.

participants must comply with a few requirements: you must have a current City of Port Townsend business license, and you must be current on your City B&O taxes. Please email or call Petro if you are interested in participating. If you have questions, please contact Petro or Barnett. They’ll be happy to assist you and they will be the managers of the Lodging Availability Board, not the City of Port Townsend. Here’s their contact info: Dave Petro, Ravenscroft Inn, dave@ ravenscroftinn.com, 360-205-2147; Nathan Barnett, Old Consulate Inn, nathan@ravenrook. com, 206-799-5069. Please note that this was not funded by lodging taxes, but is being paid for by the business participants. Once a guest links to the availability site, they leave EnjoyPT. com, the official tourism website owned and managed by the City of Port Townsend. We welcome you to be one of the initial adopters of the system. The more properties that sign up, the more valuable the system becomes to visiting guests. Barnett and Petro say the system pays for itself with the first room or two you book - what a win for property owners, guests, and the VIC staff and volunteers! While the Availability Board is managed by Barnett and Petro, in order for it to be linked to the City’s website,

By Christina Pivarnik With this gorgeous spring weather, visitors are coming to town and we want to be ready to welcome them. Thanks to Nathan Barnett from the Old Consulate Inn, and Dave Petro from the Ravenscroft Inn, we have a Port Townsend Lodging Availability Board on the EnjoyPT. com website that will let visitors search for availability at participating lodgings. They can search for specific dates from the EnjoyPT.com site or a kiosk display at the new Visitor Information Center (VIC) once it’s moved, even after hours when it’s closed. These features greatly enhance our guests’ experience when planning their visit to PT or while standing at the VIC desperately seeking lodging for the night. Think Reservations will provide this as a service. Participating properties pay a setup cost and an annual fee. You are invited to participate! Costs are a $50 setup fee and $120 a year for 1-10 rooms and $240 a year for 11 rooms or more. Once you’ve signed up and paid your fees, you can then log in to a website where you can easily enter your business information and mark which days you are full. This information updates on a public website every 15 minutes. The system is up and operating with about a half dozen or so

Volunteers visit ReCyclery, Aladdin, PT Inn By Lorna Mann The ReCyclery started life as a bike clinic in front of the Boiler Room but over the years it has grown into something much larger. Now located on Blaine Street the organization has gone from strength to strength and now offers many options for residents and visitors to explore our area by bike. If you do not have a bike of your own the ReCyclery offers options. You can purchase a fully refurbished bike that has been safety tested for very reasonable amounts or rent a bike for a suggested donation of $15 to $30 for a day’s rental. Use of a helmet and bike lock is included in all rentals A third option is ideal for residents -- volunteer for 25 hours and build your very own bike! Volunteers commit to five volunteer hours on five Saturdays during Community Shop Day. No previous bike experience is required. Over the course of the 25 hours, you will disassemble bikes, refurbish bikes, learn basic bike maintenance and carry out an assortment of other tasks. After completing the 25 hour session you will be able to choose parts to then build your very own bike. Community shop day occurs every Saturday where, for only $5, you have access to wellstocked tool benches and bike mechanic experts who are on hand to help with technical questions and much more. The ReCyclery also offers memberships starting at $15 for students and

$25 for adults. With a membership you receive free use of the tools during community shop day, 10 percent off all used parts, and discounts on classes and workshops for a whole year. If you are not able to work on your own bike, the ReCyclery can offer you the services of Shop manager Kris Day and their other licensed bike mechanics. A safety check costs $35, tune ups range from $60 -$90, and a complete overhaul is $140. Hugs, their sign proudly states, are free. A wide variety and selection of used and refurbished parts are also available along with new helmets, bike racks and other accessories. May is bike month and the ReCyclery is running a number of events to celebrate. Here’s the schedule: • Dedication of the new Blue Heron School Biker Shelter, May 1. • Bikeathon for bike shelters: May 2 to 6. • Dust off your bike day: May 2. • Bike to school day: May 6. • Bike to work week: May 11 to 15. • Bike to work Day: May 15. • Rhody Parade: May 16. • The ReCyclery birthday celebration: May 30th All bicyclists are welcome to join the staff, supports and volunteers of the ReCyclery in the annual Rhody parade. The Jefferson County ReCyclery is located at 1925 Blaine Street Suite #500, Port Townsend, WA 98368.

After leaving the ReCyclery the Visitor Center volunteers went on to find out more about two of Port Townsend’s Motels. The Port Townsend Inn is the only accommodation in the city to offer an indoor pool making it a popular choice for families. Owner, Joanne Sung, showed a group of volunteers from the Visitor information Center a selection of rooms including their second floor suite that has a walk in changing area and an in-room jacuzzi with views of the water. New carpets, mattresses and an exterior paint job have all given the Inn a new lease of life. Prices vary by the type of room with prices starting at $89 in the off season and $99 during busy travel months. All rooms are non-smoking and pets are welcome in the ground floor rooms for a fee of $15 per pet. The Port Townsend Inn is located at 2020 Washington Street. Contact the front desk on (360) 385-2211. The Aladdin Inn was the final stop of the day for the volunteers who were shown a number of rooms by staff member Marissa Bagwell. The interior of each room is decorated in a contemporary and bright style. All rooms include a refrigerator, microwave and Continued on Page 5

Mixing with other YPs boosts confidence As a young entrepreneur, mother and soon to be wife, relocating to Port Townsend from Kirkland, I thought, was going to be a breath of fresh air, literally. In the midst of my enthusiasm for this new chapter, I did not take into consideration the challenges a “newcomer” would face as an Independent Sales and Marketing Consultant. Thus, I was thrilled when Teresa Verraes, Executive Director of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, asked me to attend a networking event hosted by the Chamber’s Young Professionals Network and Peninsula Young Professionals Network. It was a confidence boost to know that Jefferson County values YPs, and I appreciate that Teresa saw something in me that at the time, I could not even see in myself. I admire Teresa’s ability to bring people together. She is the ultimate connector. On March 18, Teresa and her

amazing team of both YPN and Chamber members, as well as a handful of others, boarded a bus to the event. The excitement was evident, and we were all were eager to get to know and collaborate with one another. The most inspiring part about this initial experience was engaging with such a diverse group of Jefferson County YP’s who were more about community enrichment and less about personal gain. That is the moment I knew I found where I belonged. Once the event started, the dynamic blend of the Jefferson and Clallam Counties YPN members broke the ice for many, and I found I was not alone in being a “newcomer.” The atmosphere was open and made it easy to communicate within small or large groups. I had the opportunity to speak with other like-minded professionals who had encountered similar

obstacles I had faced during my transition. Hearing their stories has encouraged me to reach for different opportunities I may not have recognized otherwise. Attending the Young Professions Network (YPN) event at 7 Cedars Casino perpetuated within me a new level of engagement and passion for Jefferson County, and has allowed me to walk away with more confidence in my new town. I can see that our rural area has many of the opportunities I experienced while living in a larger city. I am excited to share this experience, and with a newfound sense of place, I am confident that I can be a strong promoter for the YPN.

Olympic Blu Trailer Rents provides home away from home

We are Zach and Rebecca Dougherty, owners of Olympic Blu Trailer Rents. We moved to Kitsap County about 10 years ago and have fallen in love with the beauty and pace of the Olympic Peninsula. Travel trailers are a great way to spend a holiday by providing the conveniences and comforts of home while being submersed in the environment of your choice. Our trailers are fully loaded with gas range/ oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, toilet, shower, A/C and cable TV! Our trailers have been rented for various purposes: camping, family reunions, weddings, hobby/trade

conventions and fairs, home remodels, hosting out of town guests, etc. We really enjoy meeting the people that rent our trailers and hearing about their own travel destinations. We are also happy to dispense advice about our favorite attractions in the area. We joined the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce to gain exposure for our new business. While these trailers can go anywhere, we would love to keep them local and within the parks and recreational areas of the Olympic Peninsula. We still have space available at Fort Worden during the Acoustic Blues festival in August- - but it will not last! Trailers can be delivered within a certain radius or you can tow yourself with the proper vehicle equipment and specifications. Please visit our website for prices and rental information. Give us a call and let us help plan your next adventure! For more information visit olympiblutrailerrents.com, call 360.627.7557 or email zach@olympicblutrailerrents.com.
