Your One Stop ‘Tips & Tools’ Business Resource Center

Partners at the Business Resource Center are ready to help your business launch and grow. By Kevin Hoult Working together – that’s a path to success that makes Jefferson County a great place to live and to do business. The latest example of our team spirit is your Jefferson County Business Resource Center, where you will find many of your Jefferson County business and visitors services working together. My name is Kevin Hoult and I have the honor of participating in this world-class venture, representing your Washington State University Small Business Development Center – the SBDC. Serving Jefferson County for nearly 20 years, your SBDC helps our local businesses seize opportunities, overcome roadblocks and enter new markets with free and confidential business advising and client driven research. Wrestling with business questions but don’t know where to turn? I’ll be offering my popular “Ask Me Anything” round table each Monday, here at the Jefferson County Resource Center from 1:30 p.m. (right after

Brian Kuh, and the Craft3 team of innovative finance professionals can help connect businesses to sources of capital, needed to grow. Finally, the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Information Center can help with community referrals, relocation packets, and all of the great business services you’ve come to expect from our best-in-class chamber team. Upon completion of his business plan, Mike found the financing he needed and now offers Mo Chilli BBQ in Discovery Bay. Check Mike’s website, http:// mo-chillibbq.com for more information. Eaglemount Winery reopens historic Palindrome By Lorna Mann Jefferson County has an array of bountiful resources. Last month visitor center volunteers learned about tasty treats and handmade gifts all produced within our county. This month we continued in the same vein, and were given a behind-thescenes tour of Eaglemount Winery’s new tasting room and event center, located at the Palindrome, 1893 South Jacob Miller Road. The Palindrome is an iconic Jefferson county building. After standing empty for many years, new owners Trudy and Jim Davis of Eaglemount Winery have given it a brand new lease of life. Once again the Palindrome will be a venue for weddings, concerts and much more, with the sound of music, dancing, and laughter echoing through the rafters. While the main hall of the Palindrome eagerly slides back into its old life as an event venue, the new wrap-around deck leads to Eaglemount’s new tasting

room, outfitted with a tasting bar built of reclaimed wood. Open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Sunday, guests can choose four different ciders, meads or wines, created by Trudy, to taste for $5 per person. The county also gains a new accommodation for visitors with the reopening of the Palindrome. Arcadia, a 1908 Craftsman style house that has a variety of different accommodation options in beautiful surroundings, is now available to rent, with plans to run it as a full-service bed and breakfast in the spring of 2016. If tastings, events and overnight stays weren’t enough, 800 apple trees are also due to be planted along with grape vines. Many Jefferson county residents have fond memories of weddings, dances and socials at the Palindrome, and Jim says he has been overwhelmed with peoples’ responses to the Davis’ plans to bring the Palindrome back to

life. A quick trip into Port Townsend for him is now peppered with conversations about peoples’ fond memories of dances and weddings once held at the

Palindrome, and gratitude that it has been re-opened and is once again filled with people. While many old buildings are left to fall into disrepair

and ruin, the Palindrome’s previous owners re-roofed all the buildings, including the wood shed, with the highest quality roofing materials on the market,

ensuring that the buildings could be preserved and passed on to new owners for new uses. It is a proud legacy that speaks to our community’s commitment to itself. We are lucky to be surrounded by amazing natural resources, history and beauty but perhaps, more so, we are lucky to live in a community where there is commitment to working together for the present day, and for the future. The new tasting room opens the doors to extended collaboration with other local cideries, chefs, musicians and more. Exciting events are already on the books for the Palindrome, and the possibilities of what our community will create there in the future are even more exciting. Find out more about Eaglemount at www. eaglemountwinery.com , or by calling Jim and Trudy at (360) 732-4084.

Thanks to our teacher-champions Your Chamber and community members helped set the tone for the school year ahead as 21 new teachers and staff joined the Port Townsend School District. • Game schedule

Seed is produced in hatcheries from native broodstock. The most common method of planting is to place 10" to 12" long hollow PVC tubes 3" to 6" in diameter into the beach substrate. The tubes are set in rows, with 3 to 4 geoduck seeds placed into each tube. The tubes are covered with net caps to protect them. After one or two years the tubes are removed, giving the geoducks time to dig deep enough to avoid predators. Geoducks are harvested in about 5 years, one clam at a time, at approximately 1 to 2 pounds. A water jet is placed alongside the geoduck siphon which temporarily softens the sand, allowing the harvester to gently lift the animal out. This method minimizes the stress to the geoduck and the amount of beach that is disturbed.

Harvested geoducks are placed in containers and tagged before being removed from the beach. Tags include the name of the harvesting company, the exact location and date of harvest. They are transported to a processing facility, cleaned, bagged or boxed and placed under temperature control prior to and during shipping to restaurants or seafood markets. Strict protocol governs the entire process of handling until it reaches the consumer, assuring temperature control, traceability and the finest geoducks in the world.

A big thank-you for your quick turn-around of the Key City Players Holiday Show brochures. I haven’t even seen them yet, but several people in the organization who have raved to me about how good they look. You’re getting lots of kudos for the rich color and excellent print job. New Business Guide lists 450 local businesses

Lean Thinking has taken root in Jefferson County by Earll Murman Lean Thinking – the strategy for improving enterprise productivity through Continuous Improvement (or Kaizen) and Respect for People – has taken root in Jefferson County. In the past three years, over 250 individuals from businesses, government and non-profits have received some formal training in workshops and courses organized by the EDC Team Jefferson, the Chamber of Commerce and Jefferson County Community Foundation with participation from Jefferson Healthcare and

the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Additional efforts have been underway at the Jefferson County Department of Community Development and Jefferson Healthcare. The courses and workshops provide an impetus for application of Lean Thinking principles and tools. During the most recent six week course, four participants from Jefferson Mental Health Services redesigned their patient intake process, to reduce the time from first contact to first appointment, from 14-28 days to 1 day. And four participants, from Toland

Home Garden, redesigned the steps for receiving and handling large rolls of paper needed in their flag production process, removing unnecessary movement and improving employee safety. One participant commented, “It’s a course that has amazing tools and ways of thinking to make your business run smoother and efficiently.” The next offering is planned for early 2016. Fees range from $60 for a single, to $120 for three participants from the same organization. Contact EDC Team Jefferson for more information, (360) 379-4693.

Wasted Days and Wasted Nights… By Kevin Hoult With all of our opportunities here for networking, I find myself cringing when I overhear a great introduction wasted by poor preparation. The conversation often starts with; “It’s great to

meet you, what do you do?” Then an uncomfortable pause and “Well…” while the business owner looks at the floor - opportunity lost. An elevator speech could have saved the day; succinctly telling prospects what you do, who you do it

for and how you do it. What’s my elevator speech? Fair question! “I help people take control of their business, overcome roadblocks and explore new opportunities. My services are free and I’m ready to work with you!”

Would you like to know more? Call Kevin, your free and confidential certified business adviser with your North Peninsula SBDC. Dial (360) 865-4938 or email kevin.hoult@wsbdc. org to review your elevator speech.

Port Ludlow business conversations reveal 75 businesses In an effort to keep our finger on the pulse of the wants and needs of the Port Ludlow Business Community, the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Sound Community Bank and Jamie Deering of Healing Elements, offers a series of monthly conversations. Among the many ideas generated by the group since it began in March, was a list with mapping of businesses in the Port Ludlow area for prominent display in our Chamber’s 24-hour information kiosk, located in the heart of the Port Ludlow Village Center. Within two months the map and list were completed, and we were all a bit astonished to note how many businesses and services

there really are, in and around Port Ludlow proper. 75 businesses are listed. Included are many homebased businesses you might not know about. One of our business members commented, “It is wonderful to be able to see what you can actually access within just a few miles of your home.” The map and list have been a solid addition to the Village Center, and will be a valuable tool for anyone living or visiting our beautiful community. The Kiosk also displays a map of East Jefferson County, and the Port Ludlow Trails System. To learn how to participate in the Conversations, call (360) 385-7869 or email admin@jeffcountychamber. org. You do not need to A Port Ludlow business information kiosk has been established at the Port Ludlow Village Center.

A CALL TO ACTION: This project has been such a success we are considering creating another directory for our Chamber’s Chimacum Corner Farmstand Kiosk. If you are a business in Chimacum or Port Hadlock and wish to be listed, give us a call or email admin@ jeffcountychamber.org. The second project to come out of Port Ludlow Conversations was the free Outdoor Movie Night. Spearheaded by Jamie Deering, the night was a great success with over 300 attendees from all over the peninsula and beyond. We are looking forward to planning it again, for next summer.
