This Chamber makes a difference From Jordan Eades, PresidentElect 2016 As we approach our seventh anniversary as the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, it is important to take the time to reflect upon our many successes. I can wholeheartedly say that as a business owner, and member of the board, I have experienced first-hand the positive effects of a regional Chamber. This year will also mark for me, the fifth year as a member of the JCCC

board. Over the years, I have worked in several capacities; as director of our Young Professionals Network, and for the past two years, as incoming president. As I step into my new role as Chamber president, I feel incredibly fortunate to work with a passionate, highly skilled, board and staff. Your Chamber is a power-house of talented folks who are committed to the success of Jefferson County businesses. And, it is this dedication that has driven the Chamber to invest in a new home that will ensure the development of entrepreneurship, the

cultivation of leadership, and powerful professional growth opportunities to help make you more successful, in and out of your businesses and careers. That being said, we are not resting on our laurels. Now more than ever, as an organization, we are challenging ourselves; asking tough questions about how to best utilize our resources, how to continue to demonstrate and encourage great leadership, and how to best meet the needs of Jefferson County business owners. As we set our course for 2016, we will once again look to our members for

valuable feedback. You will soon receive the Member Survey. Please take the opportunity to share your experiences, voice your opinions, and let us know what the Chamber can do to inspire, educate, and support your business, as well as economic development of Jefferson County. Seed is produced in hatcheries from native broodstock. The most common method of planting is to place 10" to 12" long hollow PVC tubes 3" to 6" in diameter into the beach substrate. The tubes are set in rows, with 3 to 4 geoduck seeds placed into each tube. The tubes are covered with net caps to protect them. After one or two years the tubes are removed, giving the geoducks time to dig deep enough to avoid predators. Geoducks are harvested in about 5 years, one clam at a time, at approximately 1 to 2 pounds. A water jet is placed alongside the geoduck siphon which temporarily softens the sand, allowing the harvester to gently lift the animal out. This method minimizes the stress to the geoduck and the amount of beach that is disturbed.

Harvested geoducks are placed in containers and tagged before being removed from the beach. Tags include the name of the harvesting company, the exact location and date of harvest. They are transported to a processing facility, cleaned, bagged or boxed and placed under temperature control prior to and during shipping to restaurants or seafood markets. Strict protocol governs the entire process of handling until it reaches the consumer, assuring temperature control, traceability and the finest geoducks in the world.

The Chamber manages and staffs the Visitor Information Center on behalf of the City of Port Townsend. This center showcases all that there is to do on the Olympic Peninsula, highlighting member businesses. This information hub not only serves the visitor, but it also acts as a resource to new residents and locals looking for the most up to date information in the region. Chamber also serves the county through a series of events, partnerships and tools. PORT TOWNSEND VISITOR CENTER 11219 Visitors welcomed Representing 63 countries, all 50 states and 9 Canadian provinces 153 tourist information packets and 98 relocation packets mailed throughout the country 4424 volunteer hours donated by Visitor Center volunteers, saving the city a whopping $121,836.95 in staff costs for the City of Port Townsend

EVENT HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR THE OLD SCHOOL 4TH OF JULY “Never let it be said that the residents of Jefferson County do not appreciate a good party! This is evidenced by the vast number of celebratory events held every year. This year the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with many individual and business community members, added one to the list. The Old School 4th of July was a vestige of our region 100 years ago. It was an opportunity for friends and neighbors to come together and competitively eat pie, play a game of tug-o-war, have a picnic, cut a rug and enjoy the fireworks. This community event was a huge success, drawing over 1,000 visitors from around the peninsula. I am so proud of the collaboration that made it happen and hope to see it continue for many years to come.” – Amanda Funaro, 2015 President

Advocacy

“We wanted to send a quick thank you for the fun ribbon cutting. We enjoyed meeting everyone and acknowledge the fact they took time out of their schedules for the show of support. The new member spotlight was an impressive layout with strong placement on the page and giant picture! We have gotten 3 new appointments and people recognized us from the photo.” Jolene and Marylou, In Season Salon

Celebrate our Success! Amanda Funaro, President 2015

I am always astonished at the willingness of our community to step forward and pull together to accomplish great things. These past two years it has been my honor to serve as the President of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. We collectively have accomplished so much

in our effort to support the Jefferson County business community, to develop new leadership, and to further our goal of making Jefferson County a place of opportunity for future generations. Thank you for helping the Chamber pull-off some amazing successes over these past years. I hope that you will please take some time to celebrate our wins and continue to look at how small deliberate change adds up to become something truly amazing. The

whole is only as great as its parts: In the past four years that I have been engaged with the Chamber, I’ve been astonished at the committed leadership of our members. The many board members with whom I have had the pleasure of working are a microcosm of this great county. We have worked together to create sound policies, and to provide support to initiatives that I hope will take Jefferson County far into the future. I have had the pleasure of being

both a participant and a witness to mentorship of young leaders in our community. Thank you, and please continue in this vital work. I believe it to be quite necessary to the social and economic health of Jefferson County. I look forward to seeing what the Chamber will do next and I have no doubt that it will be amazing. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of it. Until next time ~
