pared food that showcase the talents of local entrepreneurs. Chimacum, in the heart of farm country, has many of the same vendors at its Sunday market. And Port Ludlow has its own market on Fridays. Fresh, local produce and meats also are featured at a number of our excellent restaurants, so be sure to stop and savor all the flavors Jefferson County has to offer. Or go pick some blueberries. They’re good for you. If you come and then decide you want to stay, think creatively, like Johnson did. He didn’t have just one career. He has had at least three: one related to water, one related to land, and now one that has him caring about all of it – the ocean, the land, the food we eat – in the place he loves and where he raised a family. Look at the little girl above embracing the world around her. That’s what Jefferson County offers. It’s a place that has it all, if you take a moment, like Johnson did, to realize it. news around town

Port Townsend Welcome to Port Townsend, where the end of the road meets the Salish Sea. First impressions are important, and ours is usually favorable, considering the number of people who visit and want to live here. First impressions are free, and so is the following News Around Town, from the award-winning Port Townsend Observation Deck blog at ptleader.com. I’m in the news business, and here is your Getaway Guide edition of News Around Town: Tourist News: Welcome! Everyone is a tourist when they visit somewhere other than their home zone, so why not be friends? Jefferson County is a year-round destination, with golfing, fishing and shellfishing, shopping (lots of locally made products), eating out, biking or just hanging out at a slower pace. But not that slow; locals are going places, too.

It’s not uncommon to see Port Townsend Bay full of sailboats and wooden boats in the summer. And there usually are plenty of festivals going on between May and September. Photo by Patrick J. Sullivan

Food News: Number-one question asked by a visitor: Where is a good place to eat? Take your pick. Really, it’s that good. Fresh is the order of the day, from our Saturday and Wednesday farmers markets to the Food Coop to our mainstream grocery stores. Don’t let a hole-in-the-wall location fool you – try it. Overnight News: Number-two question asked by a visitor: Where is a good place to

stay? If it’s short notice on a busy weekend, I say wherever you can find a vacancy. We have some great overnight accommodations, Victorian and modern, but places get booked up. Savvy travelers check reviews on websites such as TripAdvisor or Yelp. Make your reservations early, as in one year ahead, for any special date: wedding, holiday, Wooden Boat Festival, etc. Deer News: Number-three question asked: What’s with all the deer? Yes, be alert for our city deer, blacktails born and raised in our backyards who follow pedestrian laws as well as most locals do. They eat well and are a creative force – check out the intricate garden fences erected as defensive measures. Thanks to a city-limit leash law, along with the deer, we have raccoons, coyotes (anytime of day, any part of town) and, although you won’t see any, we have rats. Yes, wharf rats, whose local numbers date to pioneer sailing ship days, another aspect of our Victorian seaport heritage. Boat News: All you want to know and do with boats takes place along Port Townsend Bay: Design, build, repair, sail, motor, paddle and otherwise propel yourself through the saltwater, or on one of the peninsula’s lakes or rivers. Watching is OK, too, and whale tours out of Point

Hudson are most excellent. Please be aware that ocean tidal action and/or wind can ground an anchored sailboat (every year in September, guaranteed). Point Wilson is the pinch point of tidal action and shipping lanes: Navy ships and subs, and every merchant vessel, cruise ship, etc. going to and from Seattle. It is no place to casually venture in a sea kayak. T-Shirt Saying Of The Year: “We’re all here because we’re not all there.” You’ll also see it on bumper stickers. Parking News: Blue sky and trees we have a lot of, downtown parking spaces, not so many. Pay attention to the two-hour parking limit or risk paying a parking ticket. No worries – any park-and-walk you may do here is cheesecake compared to the supermall parking lot, and our reward is sweeter. ALERT: Be aware that delivery trucks park in the middle of the street – another of our funky features. Demographic News: The baby-boomer age wave taking place nationwide is front and center here. At 54.7, Jefferson County’s population has the oldest median age – half higher, half lower – in Washington state and is in the top 20 nationwide. Our population (26,000 countywide, including 9,100 in Port Townsend) is a generation older than most anywhere else in the USA. But this is not some cookie-cutter retirement community. People here, of all ages, are out and about doing whatever it is that turns them on. Housing News: This is a pretty place, but the housing market picture is not so rosy. Since the national economic collapse in 2008, our real estate market has nose-dived. There are plenty of property foreclosures and short sales. New construction in all of Jefferson County in 2012 was the lowest in 10 years, by half. The good news? Quality builders are at your beck 8 ❚ 2013 Getaway

and call, and lower starter-home prices are more reasonable. Prime waterfront homes are still prime waterfront homes. Economic News: Here’s the glasshalf-empty view: The median income in Jefferson (what your household must earn here to afford housing) is well below the statewide average. We have tremendous food bank supporters here, and that’s great, because the number of first-time users has tripled since 2007. Glass-half-full version: locally made, locally strong, with amazing entrepreneurs, from high tech to farming to retail; a Young Professionals Network; and local investors who believe in community. Tip: When it comes to jobs, if you are moving here, you’d best bring one with you. Smell News: Our county’s largest employer since 1928 has been the Port Townsend Paper Corp., located just outside

the city limits, and that odor you sometimes smell? It’s coming from the mill’s settling ponds. It’s like buying a house near an airport and complaining about the noise. This town has a paper mill; you do see smokestack steam and sometimes smell a smell. The mill must have various permits, an issue which watchdogs are onto. Night Life News: Uniquely Port Townsend is our mix of small-town pace with big-city nightlife. OK, OK, it’s not like the big city, but it’s the best on the peninsula in terms of music, art, dance, theater, writing, poetry, food, beer, wine and cider. Spice things up with our daytime adventures: festivals and markets, museums, parks, waterfront, marine science, boat tours, and coffee, chocolate and/or ice cream. To-Do News: Whether it’s for you or my relatives from Minnesota, here is my to-do list: Check out our historic Uptown district, visit Fort Worden State Park, go for a beach walk; get out on the water, somehow; and eat fresh seafood. Do not shy away from an oyster shooter. Quote Of The Week: People love it here, for all kinds of reasons. This is what an “active” senior citizen who has been here for about 20 years told me: “I consider this Camelot or La-La Land. Half the reason why I live here is because of the people. I count more friends here than I accumulated in my whole previous life.” The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

Get it fresh, with character

Eat up By Allison Arthur

Charlie Bodony has been warming up the Saturday Port Townsend Farmers Market for some time now with his very hot alder-smoked paprika, made from peppers he grows himself. Bodony also has been delighting vendors on Saturdays with the smell of his freshly made breakfasts that he cooks over a portable propane stove before settling down to sell his paprika. This market season, Bodony will be serving up breakfast on Saturdays at the Port Townsend market and on Sundays at the Chimacum market, using local ingredients. That’s the thing about the farmers markets in Jefferson County. They – for

there are four of them, at least – keep changing, expanding, growing, because Jefferson County has a fetish about food.

Farm to market For fresh food direct from local farmers and producers, check out these farmers markets. Port Townsend Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., April through October, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. November and December in Uptown, corner of Lawrence and Tyler streets. Chimacum Farmers’ Market is open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 2 through October at Chimacum Corner Farmstand, 9122 Rhody Drive, about nine miles from Port Townsend. Port Townsend Wednesday Market is on Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m., July 3 through Sept. 18, corner of Lawrence and Polk streets, Uptown. Port Ludlow Friday Market runs Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m. at Port Ludlow Marina & Resort May 1 through Sept. 30.

We like it. A lot. We like it fresh. We like it local. We like it interesting. Which means we go to market to get a fresh food fix. A good number of us are on a firstname basis with the people we buy our meat and vegetables from – folks like Charlie, and Zach from Dharma Ridge Farm or Jesse from Colinwood Farm or Roger from Short’s Family Farm or Hanako and Marko from Midori Farm or Don from Walker Mountain Meats. There’s also a trend to have fun with food – which is probably why Charlie put bottles of his alder-smoked paprika in a bandolier one year, pretending they were bullets, and why market manager Will O’Donnell invited the Bug Chef to come to market and top locally made pizza with grasshoppers last year. Honestly, there’s always something a little deliciously wacky going on at market. O’Donnell likes to say Jefferson County is one of the “largest small markets” in the United States.

That might be hard to prove. What can be said of Jefferson County is this: “Seattle has to pull vendors from all over the state to get the diversity and quality we have right here in Jefferson County,” says O’Donnell. With more than 70 vendors, you’ll find not only fresh produce, flowers and bread, but also meat and seafood, honey, jam, aprons, art, candles, jewelry, dog biscuits, crafts, pasta, eggs and even trees. The Port Townsend Farmers Market on Saturday takes up a block in Uptown next to the Port Townsend Recreation Center at 620 Tyler St. On any given Sunday, there also could be other events happening at the center, from book sales to art events. There are restroom facilities there as well as a place for kids to hang out and play. The Sunday market in Chimacum is at the epicenter of the farming community in Jefferson County and next to the Chimacum Corner Farmstand, which is a rural retail grocery that also features “Food from Here.” The store

also is a great place to look for farm connections, and its website – chimacumcorner.com – offers recipes using local food, including interesting suggestions such as chocolate chili that marries Steve Habersetzer’s garlic, chili sauce from Lopez Island, Theo organic fair trade chocolate and beans from Oregon. What farmers markets all have in common – whether you are in Port Townsend, Chimacum, Port Ludlow, Seattle, Grays Harbor or Manzanita, Ore. – is a taste of community character. People like Charlie Bodony kick it up a notch every year. He says his breakfasts this year will include gluten-free biscuits from Pane d’Amore, sausage that he will get from Walker Mountain Meadows, beef from Roger Short’s farm on occasion, produce from the endless variety of vendors, too numerous to name. There are also value-added food vendors at the market. There’s everything from salmon sandwiches to crab cakes to gluten-free breads to bagels, coffee, chocolate, homemade tamales and pizza. And there’s also a lot of talk about food at markets. farmers once a year is to take the annual Farm Tour – which will be Sept. 15 this year. Check out the WSU Extension Jefferson County website for details, jefferson.wsu.edu. Typically, food is offered at every farm. There is an endless supply of fresh food – as well as fresh characters – at the farmers markets in Jefferson County. So come meet them – and eat up the flavors of the market.

Charlie Bodony of Some Like It Hot has fun with his food. Note his paprika bottles are “bullets” in a bandolier he wore for Halloween. 15 Weird things

About Jefferson County 1.

Most of Jefferson County is in Olympic National Park and there is no road between the east end of the county and the west end. You’ve got to go through Clallam County to get to the other side of Jefferson County. 2. Jefferson County is the first county in Washington state in 60 years to pull the plug on Puget Sound Energy and move to public electricity. Three counties considered the issue in 2008; only Jefferson County voted to make the change. 3. It’s not your imagination, Port Townsend has more Toyota Prius owners than almost anywhere. At one point, there were 8.2 cars per 1,000 residents. 4. In Washington state, rural Jefferson County is the state’s per-capita solar leader, with one certified renewable energy project for every 337 residents. Port Townsend was named Washington Solar City of the Year in 2009. 5. The Port Townsend Farmers Market is the largest market west of Seattle and was named best large market in the state in 2011. It considers itself to be one of the best smallest markets in the U.S. 6. Jim Whittaker, the first American to climb Mount Everest, lives in Jefferson County and continues to

18 ❚ 2013 Getaway

work to get people of all ages outside and into “nature’s cathedral.” 7. His son Leif, a Port Townsend High School graduate, has now climbed Everest twice. 8. By 2011, the median age of people in Jefferson County rose to 54.7. This means that Jefferson County is “almost a generation above the median age of people in the U.S.” It has the oldest median age of any county in Washington, and Jefferson County’s population is among the oldest 20 counties in the U.S. 9. One of the most widely read articles in the Leader, Jefferson County’s official newspaper is a story about Paula Lalish’s exploding knitting needle, which appeared online on Aug. 11, 2004. 10. Mount Olympus, “home of the gods,” is the highest peak in the Olympic mountain range, at 7,965 feet. 11.

On May 1, 1963, Jim Whittaker became the first American to summit Mount Everest. Whittaker lives in Port Townsend and advocates for people of all ages to get outside and enjoy the world. Photo by Nawang Gombu, copyright Jim Whittaker

“We’re all here because we’re not all there” is a favorite local bumper sticker. When Hollywood Video wanted to move into Port Townsend, another oft-seen sticker was “Frankly, my dear, we DO give a damn.” And when Rite Aid tried to open a drug store in Port Townsend, an opposition bumper sticker quickly made the rounds: “Rite Aid, wrong town.” Rite Aid pulled the plug on the store. 12. Jefferson County’s economy consists almost entirely of family-owned businesses. There are few chain stores. The largest private employer is the Port Townsend Paper Corp., with about 300 employees; the largest public employer is Jefferson Healthcare, with about 500 employees. 13. Indian Island, now home of a U.S. Navy munitions unloading and storage depot, got its name before the turn of the century when local Indians, primarily of the S’Klallam tribe, went there to live after they were removed from the Port Townsend area and sent to the Skykomish Reservation, at the southernmost end of Hood Canal. 14. The Hood Canal Bridge, which connects the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas, is one of the five longest floating bridges in the world. The western half of the bridge sank in a fierce windstorm in 1979. 15. The original street level of downtown Port Townsend was a full story below the current level of Water Street. Some old buildings have sets of windows now below street level. At the time of Port Townsend’s settlement, what is Water Street was literally the water – it was where the beach met the sea. Another street was platted all along Port Townsend’s waterfront, called Front Street, but was never built.

For a sip

Bring a designated driver and come taste your way through the Olympic Peninsula. You, your friends and fellow travelers can find everything you want in a tasting event in or around Port Townsend, from fancy spiced hard cider to red wine and craft microbrews. Before you set out to search for your favorite cider or wine in this small Victorian seaport and arts community, remember that you are here to enjoy, so step out of your 20 ❚ 2013 Getaway

comfort zone, try something new, taste a wide variety and take a bottle of something home. Locally owned businesses appreciate your support, and you can bring bottles back as gifts or save them for your anniversary or for savoring memories of one amazing vacation.

Townsend’s annual Strange Brewfest staged each January at the Marvin G. Shields American Legion Hall downtown. Strange Brewfest features weird, eclectic, even random beers, and the festival lures folks from around the Pacific Northwest.

Beer and fun

Cider and wine

For those of who favor beer, visit the Pourhouse, a craft-beer taproom and bottle shop on the Port Townsend waterfront. There are more than a dozen frequently rotated taps, a small wine list, a large selection of bottled beer and a bright, open gathering space on Port Townsend Bay. For a brewery scene, head to Port Townsend Brewing Company’s tasting room, located in the Port Townsend Boat Haven shipyard, across the highway from Safeway. The tasting room offers a number of beers on tap, bottled beers to take away and live music during the summer. Get your hotel reservations early for Port

Cider and wine connoisseurs, look no farther. East Jefferson County is host to four outstanding cider and winery businesses, which include tasting rooms for your tasting adventure. Sorensen Cellars is a family-owned winery located just outside of Port Townsend city limits on State Route 20. It doesn’t have tasting-room hours, but its wines are sold locally. Alpenfire Orchards is located about nine miles west of town and offers Washington’s only certified-organic hard cider, as well as

vinegar. Alpenfire’s cider choices range from Spark! semisweet to organic Pirate’s Plank “Bone Dry” and organic Ember bittersweet. Alpenfire recently won a national Good Food Award for its Orleans-style organic apple cider vinegar. Eaglemount Wine & Cider is located in the Chimacum Valley, approximately 12 miles from Port Townsend, a drive that takes you through beautiful farmland. It makes hard apple ciders and specialty ciders, including a ginger cider chosen as one of 43 best in the world by Sunset. The Cyser cider is a hard cider fermented and sweetened with honey. The Perry cider is a slightly sparkling cider crafted from organically grown pears. Finnriver Farm also is located in Chimacum Valley. Along with berries and other produce, the farm offers sparkling hard ciders, dessert wines and liqueurs. Finnriver’s artisan sparkling cider and Farmstead sparkling cider are both pressed and handcrafted on the farm from wild homestead and organic Washington apples.

PlaCes to eat

Eat up, eat out It’s the first question visitors stop and ask locals: “Where’s a good place to eat?” That’s a tough question, of course, because it all depends on what you are hungry for at that moment – a juicy hamburger or something vegetarian, an exotic dish or just delicious local fare. For the past 17 years, the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader has hosted a “Best Foods” contest. The friendly and completely unscientific competition – voting twice, three times even, is encouraged – offers locals and other regulars the chance to vote for their favorite eateries. While favorites are listed here, there are some restaurants that don’t participate, and some are new, so they aren’t mentioned. In short – don’t let the results sway you from trying any corner café, roadside restaurant or other eatery that may strike your fancy. And don’t judge a restaurant from the street. Restaurants do not stay in business long without local support. The best often aren’t much to look at, but do offer day-in, day-out good eats. More and more restaurants are including fresh local produce so you’re apt to get not just good food, but local food. Two excellent ways to check out local food are the Taste of Port Townsend event, which this year is set for June 13; and the annual Jefferson County Farm Tour, which showcases local fruit, meat and vegetables in everything from ice cream to pie. Jefferson County Farmers Markets – there’s one on Saturdays in Port Townsend, another on Sundays in Chimacum – also offer lots of great food. If you simply want to dine out, however, here are our 2012 Best Foods contest winners. Go out and enjoy a culinary adventure.

tri-area, marrowstone

Bikes, beaches, berries

If you come to Jefferson County to get away, you’ll likely pass through the Tri-Area, made up of the small, unincorporated communities of Port Hadlock, Irondale and Chimacum, with access to Marrowstone Island. At first glance, the scene can be deceiving. Yes, there are rolling farmlands, but look more closely and you’ll discover a treasure trove of parks as well as farm stands. At the four-way stop in Chimacum, note the welcoming sign that greets visitors: “Food from Here.” The Chimacum Corner Farmstand is a wealth of local produce and meats, as well as information. The Chimacum Valley (and nearby Beaver and Center valleys) once was home to many dairy farms. Many of them no longer exist, but produce and livestock farming are making a comeback. Check out the 2013 Farm Tour on Sept. 15 for a grand tour of farms (county.wsu. edu/Jefferson). If you don’t have a Discover Pass which allows you to park in state parks, this area is rich with some of the best free parks Jefferson County has to offer. One of the biggest and best is H.J. Carroll Park, which is located along Highway 19 near the Chimacum High School. The day-use facility has a BMX bike track, horseshoe pits, hard-surface basketball court, softball diamond, a playfield, restrooms, a walking path, picnic shelters and a trail to Chimacum Creek. This is a great place to stop and picnic. Close by, Anderson Lake State Park, which requires a Discover Pass, and Gibbs Lake County Park are two Tri-Area parks popular with mountain bike riders. At Anderson Lake, five of the six trail systems are open to bikes. In Port Hadlock, Irondale was the site of an ore- and steel-processing mill from the 1880s to 28 ❚ 2013 Getaway

1912. Few signs of the historic buildings remain, but you can check out the waterfront at Irondale Beach Park. Bring your kayak to navigate along Chimacum Creek. Port Hadlock was named after Samuel Hadlock, who established the lumber mill town in 1867. Today, Lower Hadlock is the waterfront site of the growing Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding campus. There is a selfguided tour, and people are welcome to come to the school between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., MondayFriday. For more details, call 360-385-4948. Highway 116 takes you across Portage Canal Bridge to Indian and Marrowstone islands. Naval Magazine Indian Island is home to the U.S. Navy’s most strategic

ordnance storage facility on the West Coast – supply ships, warships and submarines come and go from the area. Marrowstone Island’s offerings include Mystery Bay, Nordland and historic Fort Flagler State Park, a great location for camping, picnics, flying kites, boating, biking and beach walks. Don’t miss making a pit stop at the quaint, one-of-a-kind Nordland General Store, which is a hub for the Marrowstone community and a great place to buy ice cream and coffee – or some other locally made treat, such as goat cheese. A sweep of the Tri-Area makes your getaway complete. The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

Village by a Bay

Port Ludlow shines

Take a moment to slip into retirement life and enjoy Port Ludlow and its resort community. You’ll be busy. The resort and retirement community is easy to reach – only a ferry ride and 45 miles from downtown Seattle. There are more than 200 days of sunshine a year in Port Ludlow, which is one reason it’s a popular destination on the Olympic Peninsula. Hiking trails, fly-fishing and a 300-slip marina with on-the-water opportunities for those who aren’t boat owners create a perfect trifecta of outdoor activities. The 18-hole Port Ludlow Golf Course draws golfers for a pleasant day trip or overnight stay, with a championship-quality course and awesome views. It is open to the public. Rounding out the reasons to stop and sit a spell – or get hiking, biking or kayaking – is the Resort at Port Ludlow. The well-appointed 37-unit Inn at Port Ludlow includes meeting space for conferences, weddings and other events. Pacific Northwest cuisine is served at the Fireside Restaurant, which has the largest restaurant wine cellar in the area. Everyone is welcome at Festival by the Bay, held this year on July 26-28, with family games, vendors, music, food, golf, tennis and other entertainment. The Port Ludlow Festival Association gives festival proceeds to the Chimacum Schools Education Foundation and Olympic Community Action Programs. See plvoice.org for details. Port Ludlow is an active community, with residential neighborhood associations in South Bay and North Bay. Mix with the locals on the five-mile Timberton Trail Loop off Paradise Bay Road on Timberton Drive. Numbered rocks along the trail help orient hikers. Another comfortable walk is the short 30 ❚ 2013 Getaway

Ludlow Falls Interpretive Trail; parking is available at Port Ludlow Village Center. North Bay offers the Rainier Loop Trail. The Port Ludlow Fly Fishing Club has improved Teal Lake Park, located in the woods south of town. The park’s fishing dock is wheelchair-accessible. Birding is something people enjoy both intentionally and by happenstance; look for the red-necked grebe, Pacific loon, surf scooter and our majestic osprey, bald eagles and great blue herons. The town’s business center is known as Port Ludlow Village. Check out the Friday Farmers Market. It opens May 31 in a parking lot near the resort. Port Ludlow was founded in 1842 by explorer Charles Wilkes and named for naval officer Augustus C. Ludlow. The first lumber mill was built in 1852 and was acquired 27 years later by

Andrew Jackson Pope and William C. Talbot. Ludlow was a mill town until 1935. Wooden sailing ships also were built here. Port Ludlow became a master planned resort community in 1968 and has appeared on many “best places to retire” lists. It is also a pleasant place to live while commuting to work on “the other side” and a destination that’s well worth a visit. Pearl of a Place

Tour North Hood Canal

There is so much to experience along North Hood Canal in Jefferson County, and here are five surefire attractions for visitors and locals alike: 1) Fresh shellfish. Quilcene is the pearl of the Olympic Peninsula. Hood Canal oysters, clams, geoducks and shrimp are famous worldwide. Dig from the beaches or pick from the menu; look for them on the Olympic Culinary Loop. 2) Outdoor music. This is the 30th season for Olympic Music Festival’s “Concerts in the Barn” series at a farm north of Quilcene. There is also the Linger Longer Outdoor Theater, opened in 2012 in proposed 10-acre Worthington Park, next to the Quilcene Historical Society Museum. 3) Thanks to the Emerald Towns Alliance, the Brinnon ShrimpFest returns for Memorial Day weekend in 2013 with a new location, about three miles north of town along U.S. Highway 101. 4) Reserve ahead for a camping spot at popular Dosewallips State Park, along the river in Brinnon, a great home base for scuba diving, shellfishing, fishing, boating or Olympic Mountain outings. While in Brinnon, be sure to visit Whitney Gardens & Nursery. 5) Cruise to Quilcene to find the peninsula’s largest ice cream cones. Special events include the seventh Olympic Art Festival on May 25 at Olympic Art Gallery; and a wine and beer tasting on Aug. 8 as a benefit for the Quilcene Historical Museum. The Quilcene Community Fair weekend begins on Sept. 15 and includes a fun run, a parade, an antler show and a season-ending car show that features a tire burnout demonstration. Hood Canal is the only natural fjord on America’s West Coast south of Alaska, and boaters must take changing tides – and U.S. Navy test-range craft – into account. New this year, a Quilcene “Oyster Run” half-marathon, 10K and 5K events are Saturday, Sept. 28, quilcenehalfmarathon.com. Swimming in Hood Canal is a lot warmer than in the Salish Sea’s saltwater; check out 34 ❚ 2013 Getaway

Quilcene’s beach and offshore float at the public swimming area next to Herb Beck Marina. Pleasant Harbor Marina, just south of Brinnon, has a 285-slip, deep-water facility offering transient and permanent moorage. There is a state boat launch at Triton Cove, near the Jefferson County/Mason County line. Elwell P. Brinnon built the first homestead along the Duckabush River about six miles south of present-day Brinnon, in a time when ferries served the canal. Rivers pouring from the Olympic Mountains may offer excellent fishing, but they’re too rugged for water sports. A herd of Roosevelt elk is part of the landscape and has been know to make highway crossings. Don’t be timid when confronted with

a geoduck. Check out the National Fish Hatchery (open to the public) along Highway 101. Be sure to access Olympic National Forest trails and scenic (gravel road) drives. Enjoy a panoramic view of Puget Sound from 2,730-foot Mount Walker with a two-mile hike or on a drive along a gravel road that’s OK for most cars, but not for RVs or trailers. Public restrooms and other services are available at the Brinnon Visitor Center (360796-4350), the Hood Canal Ranger District Quilcene office (360-765-2200), just south of Quilcene, which doubles as the North Hood Canal Visitor Center (360-765-4999). So whether you make the effort to bike the highway, hike to the top of 6,280-foot Mount Townsend, or explore the bottom of Hood Canal with your shrimp pot or in your diving gear, have fun! Boats 101

Port Townsend has built a reputation as the West Coast’s wooden boat capital, thanks to the sailors, shipwrights and associated craftspeople – and dreamers. When it comes to wooden boats, here are five things you should know: 1) Traditional boatbuilding skills are learned at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock, a world-class center. Tours are available. 2) The Northwest Maritime Center/Wooden Boat Foundation’s annual Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival this Sept. 6-8 draws several hundred wooden boats, from kayaks to tugs. 3) Check out the Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC) – the big yellow and red buildings along Port Townsend’s waterfront. Walk into the boat shop and look around, ask about informational and instructional classes, rowing and sailing programs. 4) Visit the Pilot House upstairs in the NWMC, which is home to a marine simulator, the same navigational equipment as that used on the commercial freighters passing through Admiralty Inlet. 5) Walk the docks at Point Hudson Marina and the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven. Ask questions; that is the only way a landlubber learns the ways of the sea. Here is the Wooden Boat Foundation’s description of classic wooden vessels seen year-round on Port Townsend Bay:

Cutter A single-masted sailing boat with multiple headsails. (English origin, from boats used to cut off smugglers between England and France in the 1800s.)

Sloop A single-masted sailing boat with a single headsail. (Dutch sloep, from Middle Dutch slupen, to glide.)

LOOKING BACK (from the pages of the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader) 1893: “Port Townsend is the natural and the undisputed headquarters of all shipping on Puget Sound” reads a self-promotion ad that listed the city’s other natural attributes: headquarters of all foreign counsels, fishing industry, tugboats, port of entry and terminus for all Alaska steamships. 1893: “One of Mrs. Myer’s milk delivery wagons met with an accident on the east end of Jefferson Street. The horse sank in soft sand undermined by water. Portions of the curb and gutter were sawed away so the uninjured horse could be removed.” 1943: The Port Townsend High School student newspaper reports on the latest fashion worn by “California boys” new in town. “As you know, these boys have been wearing levi outfits, or as we call them, dungarees and jackets. They really aren’t as strange as we think, for they are the style of all the boys in California.” 1968: The city Planning Commission says Port Townsend isn’t ready for tourism, although it’s recognized as “the greatest potential industry here.” Member Mary Johnson (our top historic preservation award today is named in her honor) said, “We don’t want to get the honkytonk aspect. We want it to develop where the community image is protected, with beauty and dignity.”

Puget Sound Coast Artillery Museum is in Building 201 at Fort Worden State Park. Showcasing the military history of Fort Worden (est. 1902), it also covers the site’s post-military years. The nonprofit, volunteerstaffed museum is open year around. Hours: 11 a.m.-4 p.m., with extended Saturday hours, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., in June, July and August. Nominal admission fee. Group tours by appointment. Tours of the harbor-entrance control post (on Artillery Hill) offered on Saturdays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in summer, by donation. 360-385-0373. Port Townsend Marine Science Center is on the beach at Fort Worden State Park. The PTMSC offers the Marine Exhibit (ME) on the pier and the Natural History Exhibit (NHE) on the shore, with a special orca exhibit. The Foss Maritime Discovery Lab involves students and adults in research, addressing nearshore environmental issues. The NHE is the result of a partnership with the Burke Museum in Seattle and Washington State Parks, and includes fossils and exhibits of cliff geology, glaciers, diving birds and sands from across the globe. ME features touch pools and aquaria. Hours vary by season. Paid admission. 360-385-5582. up close encounters

Wild, wonderful From the comfort of your car, when in your hiking boots or while enjoying a jaunt on the beach, enjoy and respect our wild friends – on land, in the sea and in the air throughout the Olympic Peninsula. For children, a good place to start is the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, located at Fort Worden State Park. The center showcases an articulated whale skeleton and offers education about marine wildlife. The center also offers cruises to Protection Island, a federal bird sanctuary that 85 bird species call home, along with sea lions and elephant seals. Along the beach, please stay away from seal pups. The mama seals often leave their pups (spotted skin) alone for up to 24 hours. Do not worry, and do not touch or move the pups. Orca whales are the largest mammals around. Puget Sound Express operates a passenger ferry out of Point Hudson with more than 30 years of whale-watching expertise. A trip on the water brings you up close to it all. Recreational fishing, shrimping, crabbing and clam digging, and hunting opportunities abound – just don’t forget to get your appropriate Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife licenses. The first four-legged wild creatures you may encounter are black-tailed deer. Yes, sometimes their fur seems shaggy and in poor condition. Yes, the “city deer” in Port Townsend are everywhere (the dog leash law is enforced), and that is why many gardens are protected by tall fences. Although you probably won’t see cougars and bobcats, be advised they are around. There are no recent cases of humans here being attacked by cougars, but domestic livestock (including cows, goats and sheep) have been stalked and killed. The Roosevelt elk (males sometimes weigh 1,000 pounds) here are part of the nation’s largest unmanaged herd. The Dungeness/ Dosewallips herd ranges from Brinnon along 44 ❚ 2013 Getaway

Hood Canal to the meadows around Sequim. Elk tend to stay in the lowlands in the winter and move to the high country in summer. Black bears here are strictly black – no brown varieties, as seen in other ranges. They usually stick to the forests, venturing into the meadows near the timberline in summer. About 300 mountain goats live in Olympic National Park. Be wary: A hiker died in 2010

after being attacked and gored by an aggressive ram near Hurricane Ridge. It was the only known fatal attack in the park’s history. Those mangy-looking dogs you may see are actually coyotes. It is not uncommon to see coyotes within the city limits in Port Townsend. They won’t bother you, but your small dog or cat could be at risk if left to roam alone. A word to the wise – do not feed the raccoons. They are not your friends, and once they get a taste of human food (or cat food) they will keep coming back to demand more. Be alert for these campsite intruders that know how to open coolers. Bird watching is a year-round attraction here, thanks to our location on a migratory flyway. (Please, do not disturb beach birds, as they may be nesting.) American bald eagles are common across the Olympic Peninsula. Eagle populations have strengthened over the past few years. Throughout the Pacific Northwest, gulls and other bird colonies have taken a hit as eagles target eggs and chicks. There are plenty of glaucous-winged gulls around here. Gull excrement is highly acidic and eats through the clear coat on a vehicle’s paint job, so it is wise to remove droppings as soon as possible. Where the locals go to get away

Wild West End By Scott Wilson

The Pacific Coast along the west end of the Olympic Peninsula is where locals go to get away from it all. You’d be wise to join them. Spacious national and state campgrounds are tucked away into magnificent spots throughout what locals call “The West End.” Historic lodges and cabins occupy the best places amidst wilderness. The towns of Forks, La Push and Neah Bay all have food and lodging. Forks also has outfitting supplies, and, in case you hadn’t heard, a friendly family of vampires and their allies, wolves the size of stallions (the Twilight series of novels and movies). Trailheads that network into hundreds of miles of Olympic Mountain trails, most of them lacing up river valleys of startling variety, invite hikers looking for a great day hike and likewise serious trekkers who plan several days in rugged wilderness. The West End starts once you leave Port Angeles, which is also headquarters of Olympic National Park, set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1909. Within the park’s million acres are glaciated peaks, led by 7,965-foot-tall Mount Olympus, and too many spectacular vistas to count or name. Park headquarters has maps, advice and – when needed – reservations for the controlled hikes 50 ❚ 2013 Getaway

Beach walks don’t get any better than those along the Olympic Peninsula coast. Hiking and camping can be as close as a short stroll from the car, or as long as a solitary 60 miles of power and beauty. Photo by Scott Wilson

and walks. State Route 112 along the Strait of Juan de Fuca connects Pysht, Clallam Bay, Sekiu and Neah Bay, the latter the most northwestern point of the continental U.S., and home to the powerful Makah Indian Reservation of whaling fame. The town boasts the Hobuck Beach Resort with cabins; expect surfers in wetsuits. Sports fishing, birding (migratory waterfowl and sea birds), beachcombing, biking, camping, diving, hiking, kayaking, surfing – it is all here. You won’t want to miss the Makah Museum. Back down U.S. Highway 101, the Hoh Rain Forest, Queets Rain Forest and Quinault Rain Forest are all lush, natural wonders, getting more than 140 inches of rain annually. Giant Sitka spruce and cedar trees are hundreds of years old, and big leaf maples support acres of moss. Campground options abound. The Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center is about 31 miles from Forks, or a two-hour drive from Port Angeles. Glacial water means rivers like the Hoh, Sol Duc and Queets may be higher and colder in the summer. Some river sections can be waded by cautious anglers; otherwise, drift boats with experienced oarsmen are required. Get

ready for the world’s best wilderness beach camping. Choices include Cape Alava or Sand Point, two overnight hikes (or one long loop) found at the end of the Hoko-Ozette Road. The ocean beaches are spectacular, with scenic overlooks, pounding surf and gentle tidepools. Rialto Beach (north of Quillayute River) and First Beach (south of the river) are both about 12 miles from Forks via State Route 110 to LaPush. Second Beach (a short hike northward) is a particularly scenic spot. About 35 miles on Highway 101 from Forks is Kalaloch (pronounced “claylock”) complete with sandy beaches, national park amenities, a lodge and cabins. This is wild country. Be prepared with the right footwear and rain gear if you’re heading out for a long walk or hike. On the beaches, pay attention to rising tides and never underestimate the ocean’s power. Across the Border

Victoria beckons Victoria, B.C. was settled and developed into a city about the same time as Port Townsend in the 1850s, and the two seaside cities had many early business and political links. Port Townsend’s economy sputtered, however, with political and business power shifting to the Seattle area. Victoria had its stops and starts but, thanks in large part to its miles of protected harbor, has evolved into “Canada’s most beautiful city,” and the “City of Gardens.” It remains the political center of British Columbia, marked by the Neo-baroque architecture of the Parliament Building that is the focal point of the inner harbor. Most visitors arrive just there, via the private MV Coho ferry (Black Ball Ferry Line) operated out of Port Angeles. This small city and surprising city is buzzing with things to do and places to enjoy. There are, of course, several major garden attractions and dozens of pleasing

small spaces that can surprise a visitor at any turn. Urban parks abound, as do fountains and gardens. The crown jewel of gardens is Butchart Gardens, 55 acres of seasonal color located within a 10-minute drive from the downtown. Established by an ambitious couple in 1904 in an old limestone quarry, it is still owned by the family. En route is the Victoria Butterfly Gardens with its 12,000-square foot tropical enclosure, holding at least 6,000 exotic butterflies. Close by are the gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (HCP), with its magnificent rhododendrons. Another stop is the heritage orchard of St. Ann’s Academy, which incorporates a Roman

Catholic Chapel from 1858. Bicycles allow you to make a day of formal or informal garden touring. Bike rentals are plentiful, and should be. Victoria is a bikecrazy town, thanks to its low rainfall and temperate climate. You can enjoy the coastal route with its vistas across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic peaks and its link to the site of historic Fort Victoria, marking the white settlement in 1843. Or you can connect with the locally favored Galloping Goose bike route, which together with the Lochside regional trails put 50 miles of mostly paved, mostly level biking before you, running through Victoria and all the way out past Sooke. The Goose was the name of the train whose rail bed has been turned into bike lanes. Other Victoria highlights: Step inside of First Nations’ culture in the world-class exhibit in the Royal BC Museum just off the Inner Harbour. Take afternoon tea in the Fairmont Empress Hotel, a tradition since 1908. Choose from 10 different companies that operate orca whale tours from the Inner Harbour. Visiting Canada: You’ll need a passport, an enhanced driver’s license, a NEXUS card, or a U.S. passport card. Bringing someone else’s child along? You may need a notarized consent from his/her parents. Be advised that Canada immigration is supposed to bar people with criminal convictions, including a DUI. Adding Victoria to your travel plan is the perfect bookend to a trip that started in Port Townsend. The small Victorian town that time forgot leads to the city that grew from the same humble beginnings, but kept its character. Black Ball Ferry Line 360-457-4491 cohoferry.com/main

The harbor of Victoria, British Columbia, with its scenic beauty and yellow water-taxis, is itself a draw to visitors, but you’ll find artists, musicians, jugglers and food vendors harborside as well. There are many events along the “harbour,” as it’s spelled in Canada. Photo by Marian Roh 52 ❚ 2013 Getaway
