ON THE COVER Artist Chris Witkowski loves food, farming, landscapes and farmers markets. She’s been painting on the West Coast for more than 30 years and has spent time on Bainbridge Island, Lopez Island and Port Townsend. Her oils, pastels and watercolors Chris Witkowski offer a sampling of all things beautiful and delicious. Her work, which graces the cover of the Getaway, also has been used for posters of the Port Townsend Farmers Market and the 25th anniversary of the Bloedel Reserve. See her work at chriswitkowski.com and at Roby King Galleries on Bainbridge. The salmon-offering mermaid was commissioned by Rick Oltman, owner of Cape Cleare Fishery, and has been used on Cape Cleare’s canned-salmon label. “When I decided that I wanted to support local artists, while bringing more color to how we market our fish, mermaids were the obvious answer. Everyone loves mermaids!” said Oltman, who believes in sustainable fishing practices that leave the “smallest footprint and produce the finest results.” Toward that goal, the fresh fish is brought to the Port Townsend Farmers Market on Saturdays by bike.

GREETINGS

Welcome to the festivities By Allison Arthur

Just as the mermaid on the front cover rises from the ocean to present you with a fresh salmon she’s caught, Jefferson County communities rise up to offer flavorful festivals. Quite a few center around all that Puget Sound has to offer. Brinnon has a ShrimpFest in May. Port Townsend has a Wooden Boat Festival in September. There’s not a weekend that goes by where you can’t find good fresh food at a farmers market or a festival of some sort. Even when we worry about the possibility of The Big Earthquake We All Know Is Coming, we get together as a community to eat, drink, picnic and do emergency planning. Hundreds showed up for the All-County Picnic last year at a favorite county park. For visitors and locals alike, the festivities start in the dead of winter when folks warm up with the Strange Brewfest and a dozen brewers and hundreds of beer buffs descend on Port Townsend. Then, the historic folks come out in March with a Victorian Heritage Festival, which features sword fighting, fashion and a formal tea. A goat parade kicked off the opening of the Port Townsend Farmers Market 6 ❚ 2014 GETAWAY

in April and every Saturday that follows until mid-December one block of Uptown in Port Townsend becomes a little day festival, with farmers, food vendors and local musicians coming out to savor the day. Shrimp jump out of the water and into the picture in May down in Brinnon, and if you love seafood, the ShrimpFest is the place to go. Throughout the summer, there’s seemingly a festival every weekend. We celebrate fiddle tunes and ukeleles. We celebrate Shakespeare and put on his work at a local park. We celebrate classic music with the Olympic Music Festival. We celebrate wooden boats and host one of the biggest shows on the West Coast. We celebrate films. The Port Townsend Film Festival is one of the best film festivals around. And there’s really no way to describe

the Great Port Townsend Kinetic Skulpture Race in October, when people are urged to go for the glory of mediocrity. Right after Thanksgiving, the Chimacum Arts and Crafts Fair should bring you back to our neck of the woods. We have so many festivals and shows, you’re going to have to keep this section around to find all the gems in the ocean. So why is the mermaid on the cover offering a salmon? Well, salmon is making a comeback in our creeks, thanks to volunteers and organizations like the North Olympic Salmon Coalition. A festival is planned to celebrate their return. Then again, maybe she’s just trying to barter for legs, so she can climb out of the water and come join in all the fun on land.

FRESH AND LOCAL

Savor it in season By Will O’Donnell

Market vendors can provide fresh produce and sweet grace and humility. I’m here to brag and tell you why our Port Townsend Farmers Market is the best, and not just because it was named the Best in the Washington in 2011. The first time that award was given, we got it. Our vendors at the Jefferson County Farmers Market have more gold medals than the Canadian curling team. Best Jack Cheese, Best Flavored Goat Cheese, Best Champagne-style Cider, Best Vinegar, Best Kimchi: Our vendors have won all of those titles and others. Special guests include a Jersey dairy cow, chocolatiers, beer makers, people who hand-roast nuts, and some microdairies. We are offering demos all day long and artisan food-making courses with the Cedar Root Folk School. NOT JUST ONE People often tell me that they have been to a lot of markets and that ours is one of the best. I agree – except for that “one of” part. They sometimes ask me why I think it’s so good. Well here’s my standard answer: Seattle markets have to draw from all over the state to get the variety and quality of vendors that we draw from our home county. Our market is in a small, beautiful town, and everybody knows each other. There is a real sense of community at our market. We have live local music every week and we have seating. We have a park next door and friendly local businesses across the street. We have a great selection of arts and crafts from local artisans. Our market is friendly,

HUNGRY?

Eat up, eat out, eat here You’re hungry. And you want to eat something that has local flavor. Where to go? It’s one of the first questions visitors stop and ask locals. And it’s a tough question, because it all depends on what you are hungry for at that moment – a juicy hamburger or something vegetarian, an exotic dish or just delicious local fare. For the past 18 years, the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader has hosted a “Best Foods” contest. The friendly and completely unscientific competition – voting more than once is encouraged – offers locals and other regulars the chance to vote for their favorite eateries. While favorites are listed here, some restaurants do not participate, and others might not be mentioned because they are new. Two excellent ways to check out local food are at the Taste of Port Townsend event, which this year is set for June 12; and at Jefferson County Farmers Markets – there’s one on Saturdays in Port Townsend, another on Sundays in Chimacum. If you simply want to dine out, however, here are our 2013 Best Foods contest winners. All are Port Townsend businesses, unless otherwise noted. Enjoy a culinary adventure. 24 ❚ 2014 GETAWAY

Get your boots dirty By Jameson Hawn

Sometimes the nonstop festival life of the Olympic Peninsula requires a change of pace – a chance to stretch your legs and ditch the crowds. Luckily, the Olympic Mountains offer freedom-seekers a multitude of trail options from high, snow-covered alpine peaks to swollen freestone streamside jaunts, all within an hour or two of Port Townsend. 26 ❚ 2014 GETAWAY

For an extensive list of trails, check out the Olympic Mountain Trail Guide by Robert L. Woods, which offers 177 great ways to dirty your boots. Here are a few local hiking options available within an hour of Port Townsend. For more options, don’t forget to stop by the Hood Canal Ranger District office, 295142 U.S. Highway 101 in Quilcene. It’s open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily, including holidays, through Labor Day. Note: Always be sure to let a loved one know where you plan to hike and when you will return. Safety first. Always.

March 31, so hikers must park and walk to the trailhead, located about a quarter-mile up the road on the right-hand side. A National Forest Service permit is not required at the trailhead, according to the Forest Service website. The climb is steep, gaining 2,005 feet in 2 miles, but the view from the summit is well worth the trouble. Mount Walker offers fantastic views of Hood Canal, Puget Sound and, of course, peek-a-boo views of the Olympics to the west. Bring your boots, because the slightest amount of rain can make this trail a treacherously fun slip ‘n’ slide.

Simply take a right on the access road, travel 200 yards and park in the large lot. The route to the lake is moderately steep, gaining 2,400 vertical feet over 3.5 miles of trail to the lake. Stands of subalpine forests spread across the hillsides, with a mixture of seasonal and year-round creeks carving the landscape. There is not much in the way of viewpoints along the trail. Instead, you can soak up the transition from lowland forest to high basin near the lake. Here, the trail splits to the west, gaining another 1,800 vertical feet to the top of Klahhane Ridge (about 6.4 miles from the trailhead). From Klahhane Ridge you are treated to panoramic views of the Olympics, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and, far below, Lake Angeles. Yes, we have Wi-Fi Venture to the far ends of the wild Olympic Peninsula to get away from it all and relax and you might wonder: Will I be able to connect with the rest of the world? Only if you want to. If you truly want to get away, feel free to say you’ve fallen into a vortex without Internet service. Alas, the truth is, Jefferson County may stretch from Puget Sound all the way to the Pacific Ocean – with a giant national forest sandwiched between the two – but you still can hop on the digital speedway if you so desire. And for those of you thinking about relocating here, the good news is that Jefferson County has high-speed Internet just like the big urban boys. In the meantime, if you are just exploring, there are plenty of places to park and pick up free Wi-Fi connections, although you might have to endure a delicious cup of coffee or tea, or imbibe a microbrew, to get the password. You know, be a customer, just like in the city, right? 30 ❚ 2014 GETAWAY

The Leader used its Facebook page to ask local readers for some of their favorite Wi-Fi haunts. Most places don’t require a password or if they do, the passwords are easily acquired. Here’s what our readers said: Ned Herbert, Kim Aldrich, Susan J. Tingelstad and others say the Pourhouse has free Wi-Fi with no password. Koya Leyden says most bars have it these days. Jim Sherwood says Sunrise Coffee Company is a good place to go. Lisa Biskup says Better Living Through Coffee is a place to keep in touch. Sophia Ingalls recommends Pippa’s Real Tea, plus it has a fireplace to sit next to. Judith Lundgren, who owns Hilltop Tavern, recommends the tavern. William Felts says the Boiler Room has all he needs. Kristina Carlson recommends McDonald’s in Port Townsend. Michael Orr recommends the Jefferson County Chamber

of Commerce, which is at 440 12th St. on Haines Street in the Jefferson Transit park-and-ride facility. Kaye Swisher Benish recommends Port Townsend Motel, Starbucks in Safeway, QFC and Les Schwab. A group of locals said they’d recommend Velocity Coffee, a hangout inside the Northwest Maritime Center, but they weren’t sure they wanted to share the place with others. Outside the city limits, Metro Bagels, Valley Tavern, Ferino’s Pizzeria, Farm’s Reach Café and Chimacum Corner Farmstand in Port Hadlock all have Wi-Fi. Not surprisingly, the password at the farm stand is simply “good food.” And in Quilcene, freelance writer Viviann Kuehl says there’s free Wi-Fi at the Quilcene Community Center, along with computers for community use, as well as at the 101 Brewery at Twana Roadhouse.

ALL ABOUT US

Weird and Wacky

Alexander’s Castle is the oldest building at Fort Worden State Park. It was named after the Rev. John Alexander, who, as the story goes, built the castle for the love of his life; the structure was similar to what might be found in his homeland of Scotland. Sadly, when he returned there to bring his sweetheart back to the castle he had built in Port Townsend, she had already married someone else. You can rent it today, though, for the one you love.

The original street level of downtown Port Townsend was a full story below the current level of Water Street. Some old buildings have a set of windows that are now below street level. At the time of Port Townsend’s settlement, what is Water Street was literally the water – it was where the beach met the sea. Another street, called Front Street, is platted all along Port Townsend’s waterfront, but was never built. The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

NEWS AROUND TOWN

About Port Townsend By Patrick J. Sullivan

Welcome to Port Townsend, where the end of the road meets the Salish Sea. First impressions are important, and ours is usually favorable, considering the number of people who visit once and want to live here forever. First impressions are free, and so is the following News Around Town, from the award-winning Port Townsend Observation Deck blog at ptleader.com. I’m in the news business, so here is your Getaway edition of News Around Town: TOURIST NEWS: Welcome! All people are tourists when they visit somewhere other than their home zone, so why not be friends? Jefferson County is a year-round destination, for a day or a weekend or longer, for spending time at a slower pace. But not that slow; locals are going places, too. ‘THINGS TO DO’ NEWS: Living here a while (25 years for this journalist), things get taken for granted. Visiting here, everything is 42 ❚ 2014 GETAWAY

fresh and new, and any direction you choose is worth exploring. Yes, it’s that simple. Take your pick of any festival, activity, event or business offering in this Getaway guide, and get away into something new.

to overhyped sensitivity. Maybe that’s why you felt something when you came down the hill past the lagoon and the boatyard, and into the historic district. Then again, some say Bigfoot has been seen on the Olympic Peninsula, so what’s up with that?

VORTEX NEWS: Port Townsend is one of those places, like Sedona or FESTIVAL NEWS: Community Taos, with a so-called “energy vorspirit shines in our many festivals, futex,” which, in some cases, people eled primarily by volunteers and gratelink to creativity, and in some cases, ful for local business support. New to town? Pick a festival and get involved. Planning a visit? Check our events listing and plan ahead for the festival of your choice. Hint: Reserve your overnight accommodations in advance, especially on summer festival and concert weekends, because we have more demand than we have hotel rooms.

DEER NEWS: Bambi lives in Port Townsend. His cousins, lots of them, live here too. The Western The Wooden Boat Festival offers something for all Washington blacktails, born and raised ages, including the opportunity to make a wooden in backyards, learn to look both ways boat that floats. The 38th festival is set for Sept. 5-7 at Point Hudson. Leader file photo

something more complicated. The paper mill (since 1928) is our largest private employer, and government is the largest public employer. We are known for a high percentage of entrepreneurs, another way of saying people have to dream up their own way of making a living. The first public access to highspeed broadband Internet has arrived, a step toward making businesses, small or large, better connected. DEMOGRAPHIC NEWS: Cultural and outdoor activities, and our temperate climate (less rain than Seattle) are draws for newcomers of all ages. Statistically, Jefferson County, at 53.8, has the oldest median age – half higher, half lower – in Washington state. Our population (29,854 countywide, including 9,100 in Port Townsend), may have a lot of gray hair, but stay alert, because those population numbers also represent

SMELL NEWS: Low tide brings its own special smell, but that peculiar odor you may have detected near the city limits could be our paper mill. It’s boiler steam you see from the mill’s stacks; the sulfuric odor comes from the mill’s settling ponds. The mill has made progress on reducing odors, but

it kind of goes with the pulp and paper business. It’s like buying a house near an airport and complaining about the noise. This town has a paper mill, and sometimes it smells. TO-DO NEWS: Whether it’s for you or my relatives from Minnesota, here is my Top Four To-Do List: 1) visit Fort Worden State Park; 2) go for a beach walk (any beach); 3) get out on the water, somehow; and 4) eat fresh seafood. Do not shy away from an oyster shooter. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “We just live in the best place, ever,” says a Quilcene woman, born and raised, and you will hear the same thing from people in Nordland or Port Townsend or Port Ludlow or anywhere around here. “Our community is awesome. It’s so beautiful here, and the people are wonderful. We don’t know how lucky we are.”

It’s not uncommon to see large military vessels like this Military Sealift Command ship, the USNS Carl Brashear, pull out of Naval Magazine Indian Island. For a good view, head to the Northwest Maritime Center at the end of Water Street in Port Townsend. Photo by Allison Arthur 48 ❚ 2014 GETAWAY

There are more than 200 days of sunshine a year in Port Ludlow, which is one reason it’s a popular destination on the Olympic Peninsula. It’s also become a community over the years, first a retirement community and more recently, efforts have been under way to pull the south and north communities together. Forty-two new homes are being built this year across from the Village Center. They’ll be part of a new project called Ludlow Cove Projects. Whether you want to retire or keep on working, Port Ludlow is 30 minutes away from Port Townsend and only 45 miles and a ferry ride from downtown Seattle. And there are plenty of things to do. Hiking trails, fly-fishing and a 300-slip marina with on-the-water opportunities for those who aren’t boat owners create a perfect trifecta of outdoor activities. The 18-hole Port Ludlow Golf Course draws golfers for a pleasant day trip or overnight stay, with a championship-quality course and awesome views. It is open to the public. NORTH HOOD CANAL

Fresh seafood, music, adventures Fresh everything is what you’ll find in the North Hood Canal area of Jefferson County: fresh shellfish, live outdoor music, fresh air and new adventures. Where, you ask?

Fresh shellfish. Quilcene is the pearl of the Olympic Peninsula. Hood Canal oysters, clams, geoducks and shrimp are famous worldwide. Dig from the beaches or pick from the menu; look for them on the Olympic Culinary Loop. Outdoor music. This is the 31st season for Olympic Music Festival’s “Concerts in the Barn” series at a farm north of Quilcene. The festival begins June 28 and runs through Sept. 6-7. Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert and Mozart are among the composers on the bill this season. There is also the Linger Longer Outdoor Theater, opened in 2012 in Worthington Park, next to the Quilcene Historical Society Museum. It hosts benefit concerts and fundraisers, too. New adventures? Thanks to the Emerald Towns Alliance, the Brinnon ShrimpFest is happening again for Memorial Day weekend (May 24-25) in 2014, about three miles north of

The Olympic Music Festival began in 1984 as a summer performance venue for the Philadelphia String Quartet, in which Alan Iglitzin performed as a violinist. He has realized his dream to create the music festival on the Olympic Peninsula. Courtesy photo 54 ❚ 2014 GETAWAY

town along U.S. Highway 101. If you’ve never decorated a belt sander to race, here’s your chance to try a new skill set. If you’re thinking about rest, relaxation and a hike in fresh air, reserve ahead for a camping spot at popular Dosewallips State Park, along the river in Brinnon, a great home base for scuba diving, shellfishing, fishing, boating or Olympic Mountains outings. While in Brinnon, be sure to visit Whitney Gardens & Nursery and smell the fresh flowers. Want to check out the local scene or thinking about moving and becoming part of community? The Quilcene Community Fair weekend begins on Sept. 20 and includes a fun run, a parade, a Quilscenery photo contest and a seasonending car show that features a tire burnout demonstration.

Boaters, take care If you want an adventure swimming or boating on Hood Canal, please note that it is the only natural fjord on America’s West Coast south of Alaska, and boaters must take changing tides – and U.S. Navy test-range craft – into account. Swimming in Hood Canal is a lot warmer than in the Salish Sea’s saltwater; check out Quilcene’s beach and offshore float at the public swimming area next to Herb Beck Marina. Pleasant Harbor Marina, just south of Brinnon, has a 285-slip, deepwater facility offering transient and permanent moorage. There is a state boat launch at Triton Cove, near the Jefferson/Mason county line. Elwell P. Brinnon built the first homestead along the Duckabush River about six miles south of present-day Brinnon, in a time when ferries served the canal. Rivers pouring down from the Olympic Mountains may offer excellent fishing, but they’re too rugged for water sports. The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

Check out the National Fish Hatchery (open to the public) along U.S. Highway 101. (Call 360-765-3334 for hours.) Be sure to check out Olympic National Forest trails and scenic (gravel road) drives. Enjoy a panoramic view of Puget Sound from 2,730-foot Mount Walker by taking a 2-mile hike or by driving along a gravel road that’s drivable for most cars, but not for RVs or trailers.
