Unique Port Townsend Shopping Once upon a time, Christmas shopping was a joy. It’s still a joy in Port Townsend. Remember when you took the time to make a list, then headed out at your leisure to find things that were sort of on the list but maybe not – but were just perfect anyway? You’d actually go downtown to shop, and find a parking place really quick. Oh, and parking was free. Then you’d bebop from store to store, gazing in each window first to see what enticed you. Invariably, you’d stumble upon something you’d never seen before, smile, test the toys on display, talk to other shoppers, laugh, maybe even strike up a conversation with the shopkeeper, and then leave with a treasure, happy. OK, maybe you’d even find a little something for yourself as a reward for all your hard work having fun. That’s what shopping in Port Townsend is like – it’s old-fashioned, shop-to-shop treasure hunting. In between shopping, you might stumble on an interesting deli where
locals appear contentedly reading or enjoying free Wi-Fi. Restaurants abound, and you can practically smell your way to them. There’s even an old-fashioned soda shop in the back of the local pharmacy. While big stores at big malls in big cities might spend thousands in advertising to lure customers with holiday come-on sales, the stuff those stores sell is literally a dime a dozen. It’s not unique. There are thousands of scarves, slippers, coats, hats, earrings and purses that all look alike. The people you shop for are special. You have only one daughter named Elena who loves unusual hats. You have only one husband named John who loves books and puzzles. You have only one Aunt Dolly who collects red glass. You have only one mother name Vicky who collects wooden kitchen gadgets. You have only one sister named Amanda who loves funky necklaces. You have only one brother named Bob who wants to
learn to fly fish. And you have only one girlfriend named Carol who loves you’ve-gotto-be-kidding, where-did-you-findthat bags. So come to Port Townsend and browse though the unique stores for all your unique people. Maybe it will snow and you’ll run into the local choir caroling. Maybe you’ll come on a day when there are horse-and-carriage rides. Maybe you’ll come on the day when there’s a church bazaar selling homemade cookies – remember bazaars? OK, maybe you ought to spend the night at a quaint bed-and-breakfast inn and then go shopping and take your time to enjoy it all.

Port Townsend Shopping Guide 3
go green By Allison Arthur Environmentally conscious shopper
Environmentalists are easy to buy
for in Port Townsend, a city that boasts the highest Prius per person (PPP) in all of Washington. Although you won’t be able to buy a Prius in Jefferson County – there are no new-car dealers in the county – nothing could be easier than finding a gift for the man, woman, teen or child on your Christmas list who cares for the environment.
Light the way When the lights go out, think Seagrass. Look for this great-smelling candle, which is hand-poured in Port Townsend using lead-free wicks and all-soy biodegradable wax. Heather Pollock notes that her candles also contain natural plant-derived extracts; vegetable oils are used for dye. Jars are recycled. Scents include Pine Cone, Winter Woods, Eggplant Sage, Pomegranate Thyme and of course, Main Sail. $24. Petals Flower Shop and The Perfect Season
BYOB No, not booze, bags. Interesting bags and purses abound as more and more people opt to save on paper and plastic by bringing their own bags and using them again and again. We found hand-crocheted bags made out of flip tabs. Or how about a big, handmade bag constructed of gum wrappers that would have otherwise ended up in the landfill? Both are Fair Trade items. $150 Monsoon
Old clothes reborn
For men, hiking and fishing equipment abounds. For women, there are environmentally friendly soaps, lotions and shopping bags of all shapes, sizes and fabrics. For teens, how about stuffing their stockings with environmentally friendly candy and snacks? Or try metal water bottles, to wean them off buying plastic bottles that end up in the landfill.
Once old, now new. Jenny Allen is the sole owner of Madrone Regenerated Clothing, which creates unique children’s clothes and skirts for teens and women out of recycled cashmere, silk, wool, jersey and velvet. “I wash it all and cut it up and make it new,” says Allen, whose work can be found at the website www.madroneberries.etsy. com. $10-$90 Monsoon
Don’t forget kids’ clothes and toys that are environmentally friendly, too. These items can be found in the stores listed at the end of each description. Many store addresses can be found in the advertisements in this guide.
Pretty up
Look for No Miss nail polish that doesn’t have formaldehyde in it. $7.50. Or how about made-in-Port Townsend Solum & Herbe organic pure cosmetic products? $12 to $36. And don’t forget The Gardener’s Hands. $12.95. All of these products are easy on your body. Many soaps and lotions are made locally by people who care. Uptown Nutrition and many other stores
Eco toys Fish like Brad Pitt For those who like to get out in the environment and enjoy all it has to offer – including dinner – how about learning flyfishing? It’s a sport made famous by Brad Pitt years ago in the film “A River Runs Through It.” You’ll need the right equipment. Mike Duncan makes his own at Port Townsend Angler Fly Shop. Prices vary. Port Townsend Angler Fly Shop
4 Port Townsend Shopping Guide
How about a penguin flashlight that lights up only when you crank it? $9.99. Or a big, mean-looking safari truck that is made of recycled plastic and real wood? $69.99. Check out Ecotronic and Sprig brands that aim to be fun and environmentally friendly. Sand Castle
Wood is art
Art is everywhere in Port Townsend, and much of it incorporates natural products such as wood. Seth Rolland’s work includes small, functional pieces as well as larger room dividers. Prices vary. Earthenworks Gallery
Lather up
Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products contain natural ingredients such as corn, sugar cane, coconut and palm and are safe around children, pets and pregnant women. They are also biodegradable. $7 and up. The Green Eyeshade

think big By Carol Fischbach Serious shopper and beader extraordinaire
Ready to take the “mass” out of Christmas? Living in Jefferson County and Port Townsend makes it easy.
There is no need to settle for mass-produced, boring presents available at malls because there aren’t any malls. Nor do you need to travel to parts unknown to outdo the Joneses this holiday season. While you may not equate our homey little town with luxury, Port Townsend and the outlying areas have much to
offer the discreet buyer who wants to impress that someone special with a unique gift. Diversity with luxury is the name of the game in Jefferson County, from jewelry to mounted jewelry boxes, from robotic coffee makers to your heart’s delight on land, sea and in the air. Here’s just a sampling of what we found.
Made just for you! How do you spell a big-ticket item for the guys? C-U-S-T-O-M B-O-A-T. Townsend Bay Marine in Port Townsend specializes in custom construction in composites, steel and aluminum. It builds strong, light, sail and power vessels from 50 to 150 feet. Use an interior designer to complete your staterooms – teak, cherry wood, whatever makes your heart sing. We could not get an exact quote, but we’re talking high seven figures. What more perfect place to keep your boat than in Port Townsend? Townsend Bay Marine
Mirror, mirror, I love you , too Now that you have gems and jewels, where to put them? How about a hand-painted birch box that not only holds your bling but tells you, “You are the fairest,” and offers a mirror to prove it. The jewelry box is made by Sticks, which has been written up in Better Homes and Gardens. It’s 48 inches tall, 19 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. $2,450 Earthenworks Gallery
Baltic amber Lila Drake, a new addition to Port Townsend, offers sterling silver mountings for varied stones – settings for necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets and charms. Want to impress people with big chunky pieces? Try a Baltic amber necklace mounted in Poland for $645.50. It’s amazingly light so don’t be fooled by its size. Lila Drake
Hot coffee, plus Throw out Mr. Coffee and welcome in Jura-Capresso, an automatic coffee maker that does it all – a true coffee lover’s dream. It grinds the beans and transforms cold milk into hot frothed milk through which your espresso will flow, making the perfect cappuccino. And what could make this machine even better? It discards the coffee grinds! $3,700 The Green Eyeshade
Home sweet beach home Once your boat is moored here in Port Townsend, it’s time to buy a condo overlooking the harbor so you can keep an eye on it. The Beachouse at Hudson Point offers easy access to all of Port Townsend’s charms. Condos range from $599,000 to $629,000. Great new construction with spectacular views. Look for real estate listings in The Leader each week.

Port Townsend Shopping Guide
useful, not boring By Melanie Lockhart Recent graduate, frugal shopper
You can spend hours contemplating that “perfect gift” to give to your best friend or a relative whom you don’t see as often as you’d like, but sometimes sticking with practical gifts is the easiest, safest and overall best route to take. From the necessities to those useful items for ordinary activities, practical gifts rarely fail. You might be surprised at the wide variety of practical items you can find in Port Townsend. They also range in prices to fit anyone’s pocketbook. If you’re like me, straight out of college with little money, you can find quality practical gifts for cheap. You can also find foreign, handcrafted items that are
beautiful and could almost be classified as “luxury.”
People love them. I promise. Plus, there are gift cards for just about everything. They allow the recipient to browse store goods on his or her own and maybe even do some online shopping. Plus, many merchants don’t even require that you visit their particular store to purchase their card. Safeway has a “gift card mall” with a wide range of choices, including Best Buy, Target, Seattle Mariners, Seattle Seahawks, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, iTunes and, of course, Safeway. There are even cards available for Disneyland. Local cards are available for Henery’s Garden Center. For those who struggle with specifics, there are even American Express cards for kids, teens and adults that work just about anywhere. Prices range from $10 to $150 and more. Safeway, QFC, other stores
Plus, the practical can be just as fun as the funky or homemade items. The key, as always, is to keep the recipient in mind and cater to his or her personality and interests.
Telling time Watches are popular items on gift lists, but what about a wall clock? They come in many sizes, shapes and colors. Some are musical while others are silent. This silver radio-controlled wall clock is one of a few clocks available ranging from $11.59 to $63.99. Henery Do It Best Hardware
I’ve compiled a list of practical gift ideas from Port Townsend that don’t even cover the surface of possibilities. Stores where items can be found are listed at the end of each description. Supplies of some items may be limited.
Get out in the garden
Think feet
There are a number of gardening items that could make fantastic practical gifts for those with a green thumb. If you know someone into pink, the National Breast Cancer Foundation benefits from a portion of profits made from a series of pink gardening tools, including an 18-inch watering wand ($16.99), household shears ($6.99), pruners ($14.99), hedge shear ($19.99) and lopper ($12.99). Give the Sunset Western Garden Book ($34.95) that includes descriptions of 8,000 plants plus tips for gardening in our area. Henery’s Garden Center
Kitchen gadgets Who doesn’t know someone who spends time in the kitchen? The possibilities here are endless. Perhaps Mom would enjoy colorful collapsible measuring cups ($20) or handmade Stoneware by Mara (prices vary, $19.95 for a coffee cup). Maybe Dad would like new food trays ($30.95 each) or a cutting board (prices vary depending on size, $17.99 for small). The cheese knife ($18.95) is another store favorite. The Green Eyeshade
Movies, goodies, mare One thing that isn’t lacking in Port Townsend is good food. Share the fine dining with your loved ones by giving a gift certificate to one of the many restaurants in town. Your kids or spouse might enjoy a movie and refreshments at the Rose Theatre or Uptown Theatre. Name a Port Townsend store, and it probably has gift certificates available. The price is ultimately up to you. 8 Port Townsend Shopping Guide

Socks can be simple, funny and crazy. No matter your choice, they all share the same purpose of warming the feet. They can be white, themed or even 3-D. Slipper socks are fun and come with various designs, including green frogs and colorful kitties ($9.50/pair). PT even has a wall full of fun socks ranging from $3.75 to $10. Expressions
Spill and laugh While wiping up Santa’s spilled milk, enjoy a laugh with these naughty and nice colorful napkins ($4). And look for eco-friendly and luxury items at the store as well. Personalize It

get funky
Bite the thief
Go ahead, intimidate would-be bike thieves with this colorful and realistic-looking bike lock that appears to be hissing at you. Or maybe it’s just shhhhhhhooooing away the bad guys. $32. Summer House
Funky is a lot like beautiful – it’s all in the eye of the beholder.
Remember the leg lamp in “A Christmas Story” and how the man who won it thought for sure it was made in Italy and worthy of saving at all costs? Well, that lamp qualified as “funky” by our definition.
Men love it
It was precious. He loved it. Enough said.
Fraidy cat
Utilikilts are made in Seattle and were designed by men for men. Women like the looks of them too. If you want to buy a Utilikilt for a loved one, all you need is his jean waist size. There are four styles, and sizes range from 32 to 46. They also can be custom made. Durable fabric. Prices range from $150 to $230. Belt is by Lee River in Ireland. $49.95. Wandering Angus
Meet Fraidy cat with big blue eyes. She’s really not afraid of anything. She’s just a whimsical little thing. And she won’t eat anything once she finds a place on your fence or in your garden. Yardbirds are made out of mostly scrap and recycled parts. Prices vary. Several stores, including Earthenworks.
Frogs, octopus and a guitar
Funky is the feeling you get when you see something that makes you smile and blurt out, “That’s perfect for Uncle Joe.” Have you ever gone shopping with a friend who had an eye for oddities? You know. She’s the woman you send out shopping for a quick going-away present for a special staff member and she comes back with “Cat Butt” magnets. “But wait,” she tell you, “there’s a free hairball magnet with the set.” Strangely, she has a closet the size of Manhattan filled with designer brand-name clothes, most of which she’s found on sale somewhere. But then, she also has a

knack for finding “funky” things. We asked her to go shopping in downtown Port Townsend to see what she could find. And sure enough, she sleuthed out some humdingers. Please note that the following is only a sampling of fun and funky and fabulous gifts we found in downtown Port Townsend. What’s funky to her, of course, might not be funky to you. So feel free to ferret out your own funky items. Most people who live in Port Townsend say that the town, by definition, qualifies as “funky” because it can be outrageous and silly and fun and goofy and all those words that pop to mind when someone says “funky.”
A little pink
By the way, we’d love to hear what you find; email aarthur@ptleader.com if you find something truly amazing you wish to share. Stores where items can be found are listed at the end of each description. Supplies of some items may be limited.

Sculpted heavy body parts, including feet and hands, are part of the Vitruvian Collection. They are actually bookends. Limited supply. $49 to $62. Northwest Man
Yes, frogs can shed light and so can the likenesses of an octopus and a guitar. Shine some color in that corner with these sweet little lamps. $52 and up. Northwest Man

Pewter dragons move atop the glass while dragon skeletons are piled below. $235. Look for the King Arthur and Merlin set for $89.95. Completely Puzzled

Give the gift of a handmade recipe By Catherine Kapp A world-traveled hostess who loves her PT kitchen
With all the gloom about the state of the economy these days, many of
us are feeling the need to rein in our usual impulse to a budget blowout and to give more thoughtfully this holiday season. As we all know from our mothers, nothing is as good as something you made yourself. (It’s true! I still cherish the hand-cut-out peace dove our daughter made in kindergarten, the vest she made for me which now barely fits my aging waist, and the five-pound papier maché sheep ornament that threatens to topple the tree every year but somehow never does.) As comforting as that sounds, however, this is the very time of year when most of us feel so pressed for time we can barely get dinner on the table – let alone feel creative. Never fear: If you are able to locate a grocery store, step foot in the kitchen or spend a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon desultorily stirring a crock pot, with minimal cost and effort and a little ingenuity it’s still possible to give a gift from the heart. Here are a few ideas I’m trying out this year. A kettle of boiling water A baker’s rack or tea towel For the brine 5 cups white vinegar 5 cups water ½ cup non-iodized salt 4 lbs. carrots, peeled and cut into sticks (¼ medium carrot in thickness, ½ inch shorter than the jar in length)
Dilly Carrots Yield: 8 pints I’ve been asked for this recipe so many times I’m going to include it, even though in some ways it’s an “oldie.” Actually, it was originally a recipe for green beans, but it has morphed over the years into Dilly Asparagus and now Dilly Carrots, which seem to be everyone’s favorite. Equipment you will need 8 pint-sized canning jars with rings and lids A canning kettle or stockpot A large (12 cups or larger) pot for the brine Tongs Ladle 12 Port Townsend Shopping Guide
For each jar 1 or 2 small dried chili peppers 1-2 medium cloves garlic, peeled 3 Tbsp. (about 4 sprigs) fresh dill, available at The Food Coop. Do not substitute dried dill. 1. Fill the canning kettle or stockpot with water, cover and heat on stove to boiling point. Put a teakettle of water on to heat. Keep both at simmer while you proceed with the recipe. 2. Sterilize the jars in dishwasher on “Normal” or “Sterilize” setting. (Don’t use the energy-saver setting.) Sterilize the lids and rings in a small saucepan of simmering water for at least 10 minutes. Leave in water while you proceed.
3. Combine brine ingredients in large pot, and heat to simmering point. 4. In bottom of each sterile jar, place chilies, garlic and dill, then stack the carrot sticks in tightly. 5. Ladle enough scalding brine into each jar to cover the carrots, leaving about ½-inch headspace. Put on the lids and rings and submerge the jars in canning kettle, making sure the water covers the lids. Process 10 minutes from the time the water boils. 6. Remove jars and place on a towel or rack on the countertop and allow to cool. You should hear a “ping” as each lid seals. After the jars are cool, inspect the seal on each jar by pressing on the top. It should be completely flat. If not, be sure to refrigerate the jar and use it first. These carrots are wonderful with drinks, as a garnish for sandwich plates or as part of a vegetable platter. You can also use them as the stir stick in a Bloody Mary. Store opened jars in the refrigerator and make “Quick Pickles” by putting raw carrots, turnip or cucumber sticks or green beans in the liquid for a few days.
No gift is as good as something you make yourself. Consider these perfect holiday season easy recipes for Dilly Carrots and Herbal Salt Blends. Photo by Catherine Kapp
Herbal Salt Blends A few years ago a friend gave me some herbal sea salt mixtures she bought at a gourmet shop. I’ve found myself reaching for them time and again when I was too tired or just at a loss about what to do with fish, poultry, vegetables – a friend in need is a friend indeed! These can be quite expensive if you buy them in some fancy-schmancy shop. But even if you don’t have access to fresh herbs or forgot to dry your own this summer, these blends are surprisingly easy to make and much better than “store bought.” They make a great gift for friends who come home tired and have to fix dinner – a sprinkling of this or that herbal blend can turn plain ingredients into something special. The mixtures below are suggestions to get you started. Try the suggested amounts and then go to it – you’ll soon be inventing your own patented blends. I used some coarse sea salt I had bought by accident and opened before I noticed it wasn’t the fine grind I usually use, but kosher salt is fine for this purpose. I ground the ingredients in a coffee grinder I reserve for spices, but a blender or food processor would also work. Process just enough to combine ingredients thoroughly and to bring out the essential oils – a few seconds. Store in tightly sealed jars. I used old spice jars.

Juniper Blend
Try on seafood or roasted vegetables 1 cup non-iodized coarse salt 1 tsp. grated lemon peel 1 tsp. dried lavender 1 tsp. dried thyme
Nice for pork, game or the dark meat of poultry 2 tsp. dried juniper berries 3 or 4 dried bay leaves 1 tsp. dried sage 1 large clove garlic, grated or pressed 4-inch sprig fresh rosemary
Other possibilities to try in differing combinations: dried dill, fennel seed, oregano, grated orange or tangerine peel, tarragon, marjoram. Or try a southwest mix of cumin, garlic and chipotle pepper – really, it’s up to you! 2008

Holiday parties: All for a good cause By Janeen Armstrong Who enjoys photography, writing and her son
The perfect holiday party is
often filled with good friends and good food. Why not add something really special to your celebration by having it benefit a good cause? Holiday charity parties are a way to bring together all the elements of a fabulous event and do something wonderful for an organization that is probably in need of extra help during these tough economic times. The idea is simple: Instead of asking your guests to bring presents for you or each other, let them know your designated charity and provide them with a way to contribute – and to have fun, of course.
A good list of good causes Feel free to make your own list of worthy causes to support with a holiday party. For more information about organizations listed in the story, check out:
It is a party, after all. That’s what Catherine Kapp and her husband did for their 40th wedding anniversary. Instead of a more traditional celebration, they hosted an open house to benefit Heifer International, an organization that provides livestock – from bunnies to water buffalo – for impoverished rural communities worldwide. They decorated the house with an animal theme and had literature from Heifer on hand. Guests were told they could donate if they wished, and at the end of the evening they’d raised enough for several cows, goats and chicks. Conversation flowed, and it was a relaxed evening for the hostess. “I think it was the best party we’ve ever given,” said Catherine. Parties for charity don’t have to be elaborate. Corinne Pierson has hosted two, and she’s not yet in high school. For both her eighth and ninth birthdays, Corinne held parties to raise money for Make Waves,
the local organization dedicated to building an aquatic recreation center in Port Townsend. Corinne had attended a meeting and learned that the swimming pool at Mountain View Elementary might close. She decided she wanted to do something about it. With the enthusiastic support of her parents, she held her eighth birthday party at the pool and invited her friends to donate the money they would have spent on a present to Make Waves. She had so much fun and felt so good about contributing to her community that she decided to do it again the following year. If you don’t want to eliminate presents entirely, there are plenty of kids in Jefferson County who would love something new to open for the holidays. This season, Henery Do It Best Hardware is serving as a drop-off point for Grant Street Elementary’s Head Start gift program. To support this cause, you could ask your guests to bring new toys or clothing suitable for kids ages

It’s not hard to tailor a party to match your passions. If environmental concerns are high on your list, you can throw your party in honor of Jefferson Land Trust or the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. If you care about kids, Big Brothers Big Sisters would love to be the recipient of your generosity, and the Northwest Maritime Center & Wooden Boat Foundation has a scholarship fund for its sea camps and sailing classes. There might be specific items a charity needs that you could
Donations to the Wooden Boat Foundation’s scholarship fund can help kids attend Messing About in Boats, a summer sea camp. Photo courtesy Wooden Boat Foundation ask your guests to provide. For example, gatheringplace – a private nonprofit organization that serves developmentally disabled adults – needs a $2,500 dough spreader for the dog biscuits that its participants make and sell. Of course, cash donations are always a good way to make an impact, no matter which group you wish to support. If you need a receipt for tax purposes, remember to ask. Nonprofit organizations are happy to provide them. If you’re having trouble picking an organization, United Good Neighbors is an excellent choice, as it supports a variety of social service programs in the county, including food banks, domestic violence programs and shelters for the homeless. There is no shortage of worthy causes that could use your help. Most organizations have websites with information on how to donate, or you can call their fundraising office and talk to their staff (see sidebar).

Many organizations offer membership programs that give a contributor specific benefits for donating. A membership makes a lovely door prize or party favor to honor one or more of your guests.

Love as in a poem that lifted your spirits, love as in a child’s coupon book offering “free services such as backrubs and coffee in bed on a Saturday morning, love as in a song written and sung on Christmas Eve just for you. Anyone who has experienced lean times remembers a year or two, or maybe more, when money was tight and you spent more time window shopping or browsing through wish-book catalogs than actually shopping. Maybe all you can give is time to listen. For many, it may be a “Gift of the Magi kind of year. Remember the movie, based on the story by O. Henry? It’s a story about two young newlyweds who have no money but have a great deal of love for one another. The man sells his prized pocket watch, given to him by his father, so he can buy combs for his wife’s beautiful long hair. In turn, the wife sells her long hair so she can buy a chain for his prized pocket watch. Although they could have been angry about gifts they no longer need and can’t use, they are happy because the gifts are from the heart. And, of course, you’d like to think that the man can eventually find another watch and the wife can eventually grow her hair out and use the combs. Times change, after all. A survey of friends, co-workers and others turned up some free ideas. One co-worker’s husband wrote poems for all of

How about simply enjoying some time watching a movie with a loved one? Some fine movies come to mind.
