hen people think of holiday shopping, many envision the malls. When malls were created, they were the equivalent of canned fruits and vegetables in the 1950s. So very convenient. Just open and pour. All the businesses you wanted to visit under one roof. But today I like my fruits and vegetables fresh, even is there is shucking and cleaning and peeling involved. And I like to shop where the cold wind stings my cheeks, where doors hung with bells jingle behind me, and where my friends and neighbors work overtime to make sure their shelves are stocked with goodies anyone would envy. I take particular pride in sock shopping; that is, assisting Mr. Claus with those stockings all hung with great care. And the malls just don’t have the inventory for this quest. I look for odd and unique little things, some useful and some not. Port Townsend is great for sock shopping. Looking for fine art? We’ve got it in spades. Original stuff you won’t
find anywhere else. Furniture? It’s here, antique and otherwise. We have several fine bookstores: two with used and collector-edition books, and one with the current best sellers. Feeling green? How about the ultimate Christmas gift, a new bicycle? OK, so maybe that hasn’t been your wish since you were 8, but hey, bikes are back. They are point A to point B transportation, good exercise, and if you haven’t checked out a bicycle in a while, you will be amazed at the upgrades in technology. We’ve got you covered for bicycles, too, in Port Townsend and in Port Hadlock. Electronics, kitchenware, specialty items of every description. And when you tire of lugging those bags around, there’s just about the best lineup of nice restaurants, cafés, coffeehouses and eateries any small town can provide, where getting inside, out of the weather, is a pleasure and a joy. Haines Place Park-and-Ride near the Safeway store, with plenty of free parking and a Jefferson Transit shuttle bus to take you to and from downtown. Water Street is our “Main Street,” and it’s home to great shops and stores from end to end, but don’t forget to look for those places tucked away on side streets or in what is called the Fountain District: Washington Street, one block over from Water Street. The Uptown shopping district is just as diverse. Drive on up, or take the stairs from Haller Fountain and walk three blocks to our Uptown shopping district. More eating establishments and fine shops await. Uptown and downtown are the primary shopping zones, but there are stores in and around the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven and along State Route 20 leading in and out of town. Port Hadlock, just 12 miles from Port Townsend, has some great destination stores, such as Hadlock Building Supply, which has a much wider array of items than its name might suggest. Victorian Christmases lit the late 1800s
I
n Victorian Port Townsend, Christmas was the height of the social season, with gourmet dinner parties and extravagant balls featuring grand marches. Even simple family dinners were five-course feasts, with dining tables so heavily laden they were nicknamed “groaning boards.”
At the height of Port Townsend’s early prosperity at the end of the 19th century, wealthy residents emulated the British Victorians half a world away. In the 1880s and early 1890s, Port Townsend was in the grip of a speculation boom fueled by prospects of becoming a West Coast railroad terminus. The population doubled. Property values skyrocketed. Red brick buildings rose into the waterfront sky. Businesses flourished. The vibrant city had its own “Big Five” group of capitalists, modeled on the larger-scale group of the same name that was building San Francisco. A New York newspaper proclaimed that Port Townsend was second only to New York City in marine crafts, according to City of Dreams, edited by Peter Simpson of Port Townsend. Port Townsend’s upper class knew that Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, used Christmas to shower their children with toys and gifts, decorated trees and elaborate meals. Port Townsend children woke up on Christmas to find ice skates, board games and dolls piled high on parlor tables. From the same source, locals borrowed the notion of a Christmas tree. The Victorian trees, however, weren’t the 6-foot giants of today but were airy, delicate tabletop versions that offered plentiful places to hang orna-
ments. Wealthier families bought German hand-blown glass balls and ornaments molded into the shapes of pinecones, fruit, flowers and birds. Less wealthy families decorated their trees with small, homemade ornaments, such as candy wrapped in shiny paper, gold-painted walnuts and birds made from colored paper.
Handmade cards
Victorians who didn’t have any craft background would hang ready-made Christmas cards and brightly colored Christmas seals, and Victorian-age parents opened as many presents as their children. In an 1890 Morning Leader article on holiday shopping, merchants said they were offering the best of silks and satins, the prettiest shoes that fit like a glove, smoking jackets for men, handpainted porcelain plaques, gold-headed canes and fragrant Havana cigars. Homemade presents were also considered socially acceptable, if not compulsory, in Port Townsend. Women crocheted purses for friends to hang on their wrists. Even children could fashion a case holding blotting paper for their fathers. Young ladies were given stepby step instructions, in a Morning Leader article, for a handmade gift for the young man “who was not a reader and did not smoke.” It was a cardholder made with satin ribbons.
Time for parties
Like today, Christmas was a time for parties in Victorian Port Townsend. “With the approach of the holiday, society seems to have awakened from its slumbering, and now our entire 400

Some celebrations were more intimate. A Captain and Mrs. Stetson threw an enjoyable “at home,” with conversation, music and cards, in honor of their daughter, Mrs. H.W. Bridges of London, England. In 1889, “a sea of humanity” crowded into the Knights of Pythias Hall for a holiday celebration with prizes, piano duets and solos. “The grand march was a perfect success,” reported the Morning Leader. “It was led by Miss Brock, who successfully guided the marching columns through some ver y intricate movements.”

I
f we remember Christmas seasons past, it’s difficult not to pause at memories of moments of joy: first our own, and then the unaffected and pure joy of others. You once might have been the totally focused child who could fling yourself headlong into a pile of packages and find your name on one of many gift tags. You could shake a box, guess its contents, and tear through wrapping paper and cardboard like a bear goes though a foam ice chest. You couldn’t hide your shifting emotions. Even though this present is socks and underwear, the next might be … might be the toy of your dreams. “Oh,” shaking the largest box, “this one’s for” – hiding a twinge of disappointment, looking at a sibling, smiling – “for you.” Pause, put on a serious expression. “It might be socks and underwear.” That child eventually became you, the parent, who, assembling and wrapping and marking, got less sleep than your children. You had to wait until they, their adrenaline levels spiked by anticipation, their nerve synapses firing at machine-gun rates, finally went to bed. The first child up might have woken the oldest child, who, quite responsibly, told the eager sibling to wait, patiently, until Mom and Dad get up. No, that’s not possible. Despite the fact that the parents on every day except this one get up long before he or she does, the first child up can’t wait. Can’t. Waiting is a physical impossibility. Indoor voices are ignored, lights switches are thrown, cheesy Christmas music is turned on. Presents are gone through, maybe even sorted into appropriate piles, but not opened – not yet. Other, incredibly, unbelievably, still-sleeping siblings are yanked from beds. Sometime in there, you, the parent, are awakened. You appear somewhat surprised that Santa snuck in between midnight and dawn. Somewhat amazed, you, the parent, are sitting by, smiling, drinking from a microwavereheated cup of coffee from a few hours ago, waiting for a fresh batch to finish dripping into the decanter. You’ve become the one who gathers, into one of several trash bags, the sliced ribbons, the scattered bows, the wrapping paper ripped beyond redemption. Or you’re the one with the camera, urging a child to hold on one second, please, just so we can record the proper expression when opening: “It’s a new jacket,
fleece-lined, perfect for… OK, then. Open that one.” Somewhere on this Christmas memory trip you were self-identified as half of a couple, bringing a gift while your lover stayed in bed, studying your lover’s eyes while the gift was opened – just so you could remember. If you already knew what you were getting, you reacted as properly surprised anyway, definitely, definitely pleased. There was no hurry, as you had most of a day to spend together before you’d go to be with friends and/or family, maybe families – the scheduling of which family, and when, of utmost importance. Though that was your past, it is now, again, your present – your new now. The children have moved on; you contact them by phone or email, Facebook or Twitter. Sometimes your contact feels like an intrusion. Yes, they have lives, complicated lives, elsewhere. They have their holiday plans. Maybe you’re the part of your child’s extended family that gets
the secondary visitation time slot. Yet your life is no less complex, no less a struggle. It might seem less exciting. Years of unexpected traumas and sometimes-desperate circumstances have given you a more discerning attitude about when to get fired up. You have a wider, longer view, allowing you to
give calmer, if not better, advice. “No, I’m sure your supervisor doesn’t hate you. Should she?” Maybe you’re still working, competing in a suddenly tougher environment, your slowly constructed career still central to your survival and your image of who you are. You still have dreams not yet fulfilled, goals not
quite met. I’ve tried to make this less personal, more universal. Even if lives follow patterns, each is different. This year my wife, Trish, is going to visit the grandkids, with a side trip to visit our daughter in Chicago. I plan on going down to see my father, pick up our younger son along the way, meet up with a sibling or two. Trish and I will compare notes. “You should’ve seen little Nate’s face,” Trish might say to me. “Dad,” I might say to him, cradling a cup of warmed-up coffee in both hands, “that present might just be socks and underwear.” “Oh, joy,” I’m thinking, hoping he might say, “Just what I’ve always wanted.” Erwin Dence Jr. is a painting contractor and a longtime contributing columnist (“So, Anyway…”) with the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader. Ornament features newspaper’s home
E
ach year, the Port Townsend Main Street Program creates an original, limited-edition ornament featuring a historic aspect of Port Townsend. The 2009 ornament depicts the historic 1874 Fowler building at 226 Adams St., the home of the local newspaper since 1916. The building is named for Maine native Capt. Enoch S. Fowler. An intrepid entrepreneur, Fowler owned ships that ferried mail and passengers in Puget Sound and south to San Francisco. He is credited with starting the town’s first bakery and was part owner of two newspapers: the North-West in about 1860 and The Weekly Message about eight years later.
In 1874, Fowler hired crews to bring massive sandstone blocks to Port Townsend from a quarry near Indian Island’s Scow Bay. The three-story building he constructed was the first substantial stone building in town and is now considered the oldest multi-story masonry building in Washington. The Fowler Building had several lives before it became home to The Leader. It served as the Jefferson County Courthouse from 1880 until 1892, when the big red brick Courthouse now in use was completed. In June 1888, hundreds of locals visited the Fowler Building to pay their respects as the great S’Klallam Chief T’Chits-a-ma-hun, or Chetzemoka, laid in state for three days.
After falling into disuse for a time, the building gained a new lease on life in 1916, when the Port Townsend Leader moved into the main floor, setting up a printing press in the back and a few offices in the front. The upstairs offices were converted into apartments. The limited edition, collectible

Mmmm â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Classic recipes for the holidays The holidays are about many things, but food is at the center of it all. Here are a few proven recipes from our files that might come in handy this holiday season when those ravenous hordes descend. Bon appetit! APPLE SAUSAGE STUFFING Make this the day before stuffing the turkey. It makes enough stuffing for a large turkey or two chickens. ½ lb. pancetta or slab bacon (trim off excess fat and use the meaty part) cubed small (Âź inch) ž lb. sweet Italian sausage with fennel (about 4 links) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup chopped Walla Walla sweet onion (or Mayan or Vidalia)
8 oz. cooked linguine or other noodles sesame oil and chopped scallion for garnish 1) Remove the skin from the chicken by running your fingers between the flesh and the skin. Remove all visible fat.
CHINESE CHICKEN IN A POT Prep time: 5 minutes plus 4 or more hours cooking time. Serves 4 1 4½-pound chicken, rinsed, with giblets removed 1 large bunch scallions 1 large bunch cilantro (2 cups packed leaves and stems) 2 pieces ginger root, each the size of your thumb salt (1 teaspoon or to taste)
2) Rinse the scallions and cilantro under cold running water. Trim off scallion roots. Peel ginger. 3) Place chicken, scallions, cilantro and ginger in a slow cooker and add just enough water to cover. Add salt.

Garnish each bowl with chopped scallion and a few drops of sesame oil, and add more salt if desired. Note: If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a slow cooker, you can make this in the oven. Put the ingredients in a casserole with a tight-fitting lid. Cover with boiling water and place in a 300-degree oven. After 40 minutes, check to make sure the broth is not boiling and adjust the oven temperature accordingly. For safety reasons, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best not to leave the oven on while you are out of the house, so this method is a bit more demanding.

sea salt, freshly ground black pepper ½ cup brandy 2 cups dried French bread baguette (not sourdough), cut into ½-inch cubes 1) In a large sautÊ pan, sautÊ pancetta until browned and fat is rendered. Drain on paper towels. Drain off fat from the pan. 2) Crumble sausage and sautÊ until no longer pink. Remove and drain on paper towels. Drain off fat. 3) Add olive oil to pan. Gently sautÊ onions and garlic until transparent. Add fennel seed and cook one to two minutes more until the fennel seed releases its fragrance. 4) Add brandy and apple and cook on high for a minute or two until reduced to almost dry. 5) Add sausage, pancetta and bread back into the pan and adjust seasoning by adding salt and pepper to taste. 6) Remove to a large bowl and allow to cool, then cover and refrigerate until ready to stuff the bird.

½ teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon lemon juice ž cup sugar (half white, half brown) ž teaspoon cinnamon 1½ tablespoons cornstarch dash of salt 1 tablespoon butter 2 piecrusts In a bowl, combine sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon and salt. Toss apples with lemon juice and vanilla. Add sugar mixture and toss to combine. Roll out bottom piecrust and transfer to pie pan. Pour in apple mixture, gently packing down. Dot with pats of butter.
Bake in 400-degree oven for 40 to 50 minutes. Cool completely, at least six hours, before serving. Enjoy.

Roll out top piecrust and place on top of pie. Crimp edges any way you want. Brush top crust with a little milk and cut six vents on top crust. Sprinkle with a little sugar. Cover edges with foil.
4) Adjust temperature setting so that the water heats to just under the boil. (This is the key to achieving a clear, golden broth. If the water boils, the broth will taste OK but will look muddy.) Cook for four or more hours until the chicken is falling off the
