Holiday party ‘dos and don’ts’

Don’t commit a party foul By Leader Staff Love it or loathe it, ‘tis the season for holiday get-togethers when friends and family, all cozy and warm in the same ugly holiday sweaters they sported last year, gather to eat, drink and be merry. Here is our collection of holiday party dos and don’ts. Hopefully this list helps to keep your party season cringe-free, whether host or guest. Cheers!

Welcome! Port Townsend and Jefferson County are popular places to visit for spring, summer and fall recreation, entertainment and as weekend getaway destinations. The winter season, particularly leading up to and during the holiday season, is just as attractive. If it is a unique gift item you seek for family or friends, our stores (almost all are locally owned, not chain stores) have something for you. Experiences – there are so many experiences here which you can do now, or reserve for another time. Music, live theater, great food – it’s all here, too. Make your visit a day trip, or an overnight stay. Many

shops stay open late during the holiday shopping season. Take a break from the shopping malls, and check out what it’s like to shop in a small town. And it’s not all about Port Townsend. There are speciality shops and quality eateries in the communities along the highways leading here from our neighbors in Kitsap, Mason and Clallam counties. Obviously, we hope you check out the products promoted by the advertisers in this Holiday Gift Guide, and from any other business you encounter along the way. Naturally, tis the season for love and hope and family and friends, which are the best gifts of all.

DO... Invite people to holiday meals who don’t have a great place to go. Respond to RSVPs, especially coming from a friend or client. Have the courtesy to show up (roughly) on time. Remember the Cinderella rule: A lady leaves the party by midnight.

“Not a single house light is on. It’s all Christmas lights and decorations.”

DON’T...

Dress your pet in an ugly holiday sweater or any other holiday-themed pet costume. Would you like a dog to dress you to their taste? Decorate your table with inedible treats. The table should be piled high with food. Decor could get eaten. Assume your pet is invited, or your children. There are petand kid-friendly family parties, and then there are adult parties. Wash your floors. Sweeping is good, but the floors will get trashed from a big party, so save the washing for afterward.

PHOTOGRAPHS

DO... Take advantage of large gatherings of friends and family as a chance for a group photo

DON’T... DON’T kiss your Kiss your boss, whether boss at the holiday party, under mistletoe or not. whether under mistletoe Discuss politics, money or or not! religion. Ask a woman if she is pregnant. Snoop in the host’s medicine cabinet.

DECORATIONS

DO... Secure your Christmas tree, lest there be dancing and the floor shakes. Cover your home, inside and out, with holiday lights. “I just put up every light in the universe, all candles or strings of lights,” says Nancy, who has hosted a Christmas party every year for more than 30 years.

DO remember to label the marijuana brownies!

for posterity. All those loved ones might not gather again. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, as someone will surely post about it on social media. Lighten the mood by photobombing as often as possible DON’T... Post a compromising photo or video of a fellow party-goer on social media without consent.

FOOD & DRINK

DO... Run your ideas for potluck contributions by the host. Bring a bottle of wine to a potluck if you’re not bursting with original dish ideas. Leave your dish, especially if no one is eating your contribution to the potluck, and collect it the next day. Spend an extra $10 on wine to better impress the in-laws. Seriously, who hasn’t heard that message by now. Clearly label the marijuana brownies. DON’T... Drink more than you eat. Bring a bag of chips or 2-liter of soda to a potluck. Drink at all, lest your loose lips let something slip that you will later regret. “You can’t unring that bell,” says Topper, the retired top sergeant. Show up famished and wolf down food intended for all

DON’T YOU THINK a potluck party just screams for untried recipes?

DO sing, definitely sing. And stick to the traditional lyrics until late in the evening.

party guests, unless the host insists you come back for thirds and fourths. Stash empty food or drink containers (or olive pits) for fear of losing your seat upon getting up. Expect the host to provide serving dishes and silverware for your potluck contribution, unless you have checked in advance. Say anything about the food, unless you have something nice to say. Put your fingers in the mashed potatoes.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS

DO... Sing. “Definitely sing. Everyone is encouraged to sing.” says a party songbird. “There are so many people singing with such enthusiasm, that anything bad gets buried.” Stick to the traditional lyrics, until the kids go to bed and the grown-ups’ egg nog is served.

DON’T... Heckle your fellow carolers, even if you’ve chosen to refrain from singing.

GIFTING

DO... Give from the heart. Buy local, and/or locally made. Consider giving edible gifts. Remove price tags.

Party invite excuses Sorry, the dog ate the invitation...

By Robin Dudley of the Leader For some of us, the Christmas holiday season is the most magical time of year. For others, it’s a trial to endure. What to do when you just can’t muster up the bonhomie required for another schmooze-fest? Use an alibi. Here are a few possibilities on how to avoid attendance: • “I have to work.” This one is guaranteed to get you some points from the work-ethic folks. • “Can I bring my new boyfriend? He’s trying to get over his methamphetamine addiction.” • “I only eat roadkill. I’ll be bringing a raccoon pie.” • “My car broke down.” This one is a little thin, being such a cliche. If necessary, actually break something in your car. • “My car broke down, can I borrow $2,500?” • “I’m sick.” This one might backfire, with Aunt Petunia

showing up with chicken stew and a DVD of “Meet Me In St. Louis.” • “I’m allergic to (whatever).” You can always claim that you break out in hives when in the presence of twinkly lights, or suffer uncontrollable sneezing when your nephews are around. • “I promised to volunteer for (insert name of charitable organization here).” Tell your family that you volunteer at a nursing home. They’ll think you’re a saint. Alternatively (and perhaps, more maturely) you can “Just Do It.” Put on a reasonably clean shirt and make a token appearance. Hang out by the cheese plate. Better to go for 15 minutes than not at all, and it would make your mom happy. The days are short and the nights are long, and this too shall pass. Happy holidays, and remember: the more the merrier; the fewer, the better the fare.

DON’T... Re-gift if there is any possibility the original gifter or the new recipient will find out about it. Otherwise, consider it the holiday version of recycling. Give your niece or nephew a puppy or a drum set without running it by the parents first.

Holiday Gift Guide 2014 ❆ 5

The spirit of experience

Wrap up a little something that will get you out, up and learning By Allison Arthur of the Leader As the holidays fly by, year after year, many of us are realizing that it’s experiences, not things, that we cherish and remember most. Great experiences this year included walking along the Dosewallips River, picking blackberries, watching the salmon spawn. Stargazing that warm night on Hurricane Ridge and picking up peaches to can the next day. How about the whale-watching trip from Port Townsend to the San Juan Islands, when the whales came up seemingly to say hello? The other morning I brought a cup of coffee to bed and tucked myself up against a frosty morning and thought about some of the experiences that are worth giving and getting. And yes, of course, you can

wrap up your experience with a little creativity. Here are some ideas to get you in the experience-giving spirit:

DISCOVER PASS

Washington state parks are wonderful places to visit and camp. Vehicle access requires an annual $30 state Discover Pass. Buy it at Fort Worden and it helps your community. Use it at any Washington state sark. There’s also the America the Beautiful pass for all national parks, $80 a year. Even better, U.S. citizens or permanent residents ages 62 and older pay $10 for a senior pass and lifetime access to national parks and historic sites.

MOVIES, MOVIES

Not the outdoors type? A weekend of good movies can also

be a great gift. Vasu Video in Uptown in Port Townsend has great monthly rental packages, starting with 10 rentals for $29.50 plus tax. I like it because it’s a family-owned business, and they remember your name and phone number. If you really want to wow a loved one, consider a Port Townsend film festival pass. They become available Dec. 1. A Festival Pass costs $185. Talk about saying, “I love you, marry me, spend time with me.” Ah, romance. Buy one new movie and wrap up the gift along side it.

PERSPECTIVE – BY SEA

The good folks at Puget Sound Express really know what they are doing when it comes to getting people close to whales, without disturbing the whales. And their guides can point out interesting bits of history about land, sea and mammals throughout the Salish

Sea. They’ve also partnered with the Port Townsend Marine Science Center to do puffin cruises to Protection Island. This year they are offering a Cinderella Cruise from Port Ludlow to Port Townsend, which includes the play “Cinderella” at Key City Public Theater, cruise and refreshments. Hum. Do I have to drive all the way to Port Ludlow to do this? Well, maybe. That’s the way life is on the peninsula. You just have to learn to go with the flow and that means getting out on the water in the winter or in the summer; ideally, both. Present it as a stuffed whale toy with tickets for two.

PERSPECTIVE – BY AIR

Getting out on the water is a must-do, but if you want true perspective, there’s nothing like going up. As in flying. Ever seen your house from the air? It will look small, inconsequential, along with

all the problems you might associate with it. Personally, a balloon ride is on my bucket list. Up, up and away. When I was at a tourism summit recently at Fort Worden, I discovered Morning Star Balloon, based in Sequim. Again, this is an experience, not a doesn’t-fitmust-take-back sweater we’re talking about. How about a balloon ticket attached to a big box of colorful balloons?

AIRLIFT INSURANCE

Well, while we’re up in the air, we might as well talk about a gift to give a friend or family member who has known reoccurring medical issues or otherwise doesn’t have a lot of medical insurance. In rural Jefferson County, most patients with serious injuries are airlifted to medical centers in Seattle.

There is no

LOVE

sincerer the LOVE THAN e e Community supported agriculture (CSA) shares are a great way to share produce straight from the fields, as pictured here at Red Dog Farm. Leader 2014 photo by Allison Arthur

GOOD FOOD

If you’d rather not take a trip via boat, plane or helicopter, one good way to stay healthy is to eat healthy. So join the Port Townsend Food Co-op, get your veggies and meat from local farmers, shop at the Port Townsend Farmers Market or support a local farmer by buying a CSA share. CSA stands for community supported agriculture. It’s like buying a share in a local farm without having to actually do

TARGET PRACTICE

So, as I was lying in bed, dreaming of good food and balloon rides, I made the mistake of asking my husband what experience he’d like to try next year. “Shooting,” he said without hesitating, no doubt with visions of youthful days when he carried a large weapon in Africa. Yes, well, those days are gone. But there’s always a membership to the Jefferson County Sportsmen’s Association. Or, back to my dreaming, there are also some really interesting classes offered through

The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

Cedar Root Folk School on Marrowstone Island, including a bow-making and an archery workshop, also on my bucket list. The school also offers a knife-making workshop, sausage making and firemaking, to mention a few more. No idea how to wrap that idea up, but I’ll bet you could figure it out.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

#

all the dirty work. In exchange for money during the winter, which helps the farmers buy seeds and equipment, you get fresh produce in the spring and summer. Red Dog Farm and Midori Farm both offer CSAs. Ask your favorite vendor at the market about a CSA. Yes, this is a thing, as well as an experience. Get a basket from Goodwill and put a CSA subscription in with goodies from the co-op.

-George Bernard Shaw-

MEMORIES

Think of all the presents you were given as a child. My husband still recalls his red Roadmaster bicycle. I recall a baby doll. He doesn’t have his bike, but I have my doll, and what I cherish most isn’t that I have it, but that it was given to me with love by someone I now miss. As we get older, it’s moments we remember most, road trips and hikes to nowhere, good food eaten slowly, rainy days with movies and a warm fire, and loved ones. So for the holidays, wrap up something to remember. Buy your loved one an experience.

#

Consider a $79 annual membership to Airlift Northwest. A woman I know – that would be me – recently saved $22,509 thanks to that insurance. Yes, without the insurance, that’s how much a recent airlift from Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle would have cost. (All is well, by the way.) Wrap that $79 gift in a nice blanket or pair of boots from Quimper Mercantile and you’re all set.

Most of those who profess to hate mincemeat pie haven’t tasted the real thing and are probably in for a surprise. This version is meatless, quite tart and pretty boozy, so it’s a good way to tempt the mincemeat-averse to give it another chance. Photo by Catherine Kapp

Meatless mincemeat: It’s what’s for dessert By Catherine Kapp For many of us, the heady aroma of mincemeat pie is the smell of tradition in the winter holiday season. Indeed, mincemeat goes back a long way, at least to medieval times and probably a long way further than that, and its rich history is tied to the mingling of cultures over several millennia. Originally, mincemeat contained beef, venison or mutton along with suet and sometimes eggs. Its tartness came from locally available cider or vinegar, the spices from exotic locales to the east first brought to Europe by the Arabs in Spain, later by returning Crusaders. Spirits like rum and brandy and molasses or brown sugar were added as trade with the Americas grew in the 18th century. So mincemeat is a rich dish in both flavor and history. Most people who profess to hate the stuff haven’t tasted the real thing and are probably in for a surprise. The recipe shared here is meatless, quite tart and pretty boozy, so it’s a good way to tempt the mincemeat-averse to give it another chance. By the way, this mincemeat is good not just for pies. Try it over ice cream, with baked apples, stuffed in half a fresh pear or, on a cold winter night, as part of a sauce for pork or duck. Do make the full amount. A jar at this time of year makes a nice gift for almost anyone, including vegetarians and those avoiding gluten. A jar in the pantry is a bird in the hand for the long dank winter season., 8 ❆ 2014 Holiday Gift Guide

Zest of 2 large lemons (4 teaspoons) Zest of 2 medium oranges (4 teaspoons) 1 Tablespoon grated ginger root 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (Almond extract; additional rum or bourbon) 1) Working in batches, place the apples in the bowl of food processor and pulse to roughly chop. Reserve. 2) Roughly chop the fresh cranberries with a few pulses of the food processor (just enough to break the skins of some of them). Add to the apples. 3) Place chopped apples, cranberries and all remaining ingredients in a large heavy stockpot or nonreactive Dutch oven. Bring to a boil. Simmer for about 15-20 minutes until the mixture is very thick and liquid is almost entirely absorbed. Stir often and watch carefully to avoid scorching. 4) Taste and adjust seasoning as desired. (I like to add about 1 teaspoon of almond extract and a little more rum, but this is according to taste.) Refrigerate for up to one week. To keep for a longer time, either freeze or ladle into sterile canning jars and process 12 minutes with simmering water. (Port Townsend resident Catherine Kapp has been known to shake things up at holiday parties with recipes such as this one.)

Spicy Pecans are a wonderful treat to serve with drinks or as a topping for salad or guacamole. Photo by Catherine Kapp

Holiday season snacks Whether your favorite celebration is Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or the Solstice, the end-of-the-year holiday season is approaching. It’s a wonderful opportunity for cooks of all persuasions. What could be more personal than a gift you cook yourself ? Yet food gifts can be tricky. We want to give something a bit luxurious, yet our gift list may well include friends or family with a variety of special dietary restrictions ranging from the purely philosophical to the medically necessary. In this season of light, the last thing we want to do is offend the sensibilities or clog the arteries of our nearest and dearest!

Spicy Pecans

1) Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Line one large or two small baking sheets with parchment.

Makes 4 cups Preparation time: about 50 minutes

2) In a large bowl, whisk egg whites until frothy. Add nuts and stir to coat evenly.

2 egg whites 4 cups shelled pecans 1 teaspoon freshly ground cumin

3) In a small bowl, whisk together the spices and salt.

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

4) Toss nuts with spice mixture until thoroughly coated.

1 teaspoon smoked paprika (available in the spice department of local supermarkets)

5) Spread evenly on the baking sheets and bake about 45 minutes to one hour, stirring every 15 minutes to separate any clumps. Nuts are done when golden brown.

1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

6) Remove to a rack to cool. Store in airtight container. These are wonderful with drinks or as a topping for salad or guacamole. The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

And why not, a once in a lifetime personalized trip to France! Need to have fun? Join us at the winery for the Holidays Season Release on December 6th from 11am to 5pm. Lullaby Winery is located at 274 Otto Street, Suite S in Port Townsend. Contact Virginie Bourgue at info@lullabywinery.com or (509) 386-1324.

This year Coldwell Banker Best Homes is collecting toys on behalf of the Toys For Tots Program. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Please join us in our effort to provide needy children some Christmas cheer. To donate bring a new, unwrapped toy to the one of our Coldwell Banker Best Homes offices before December 12.

Thank You!
